Players praise the game as a nostalgic and well-crafted homage to classic 8-bit JRPGs. [1][2][3] Many highlight its engaging story, charming characters, and polished gameplay. [4][5][6] Some note minor issues like simple graphics or a rock-paper-scissors battle system. [7][8][9]

Played this on the steam deck and there is a really bad bug that removes the damage numbers from the game. This makes the game a bit unusual and difficult as you can't see how much damage you're dealing or taking.

8-Bit Adventures wow what a game. If you enjoyed the classic Jrpg's you will love this game. Had this title been released somewhere been 1985 and 1989 it would of been right up on that pedestal with the great RPGS of that time. Think Final fantasy and Dragon quest.Just playing through this game you can see the amount of time and love the dev has put into it. I finished the game in just over 10 hours and that …

In mid-June, I played the same game for three consecutive evenings/nights. I thought 8-Bit Adventures was that good and I was very seldomly bored with it, so it must have done something right. Yet it was difficult to capture that feeling in a review. I grew up playing classic NES/SNES era JRPGs like Dragon Warrior (abb. DW, my favourite) and Final Fantasy (FF). The best ones of those keep the story flowing fast and …

I can't reccomend this game enough! It's a really clever, fun nostalgia trip that manages to maintain it's own flavor and build it's own fully realized world. The characters are three-dimensional and well-rounded and the dialogue is superb. The story took me for a wonderful ride, and it's been a long time since I played a game that made me smile quite as much as this one did.

This is definitely a time steam needs that maybe option. I am giving it a thumbs up, but please read on. When I started this game, I was blown away. This felt like what a Final Fantasy sequel should be. It brought back so many memories of little me popping rpgs into my nes. I loved it and was getting ready to write a glowing review. But then the game went into a description of how damage works. Now pay attention, …

Difficult enough without making you grind levels, Highly polished, likable characters, non-stale dialogue, fun story line, catchy 8-bit tunes, and a surprising amount of cutscenes for an 8-bit game(well done ones I might add.) This game is definitely worth buying. The only thing I was sad about was it wasn't longer, but there is no excess either so its a good thing. The best thing I can say about this game is it stands out from other games I've played, to be more specific you'll…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A delightful RPG recommended for anyone who wants to play a game that celebrates the 8-Bit era of RPGs. If you liked games like Phantasy Star II or Final Fantasy II, chances are big that you will enjoy this game. I love it when a RPG has an actual story to tell and this game does that; through the mixed world that you'll get to explore and through the colourful inhabitants that you'll get to meet. Your party members will share many happy, sad, and wonderful things together and their bonds and…

Sure it has a many of the staple RPGMaker issues* but I found myself loving this game for its spirit and humorous writing. The developers are great too, you’ll notice they frequent the forums helping others enjoy their game. *controller and graphic setting issues, fullscreen to window swapping, F12 closes the game, 3 different line widths, achievements don’t pop-up…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hello Friends, Today i will review the game called 8-bit Adventures 1: The Forgotten Journey Remastered Edition. This is like a upgraded version of the original version of the game. I have not personally played that version, so i cannot compare to the orginal version of the game versus this version, so i will only talk about this version of the game. The game is basically a big ode to old style rpgs found on old consoles. The graphics and asthetics are reflected in the game from this time…

positive · AI labelView post →Probably one of the best RPG Maker games on Steam, and it manages to do something well that a lot of RPG Maker games skip - actually be an RPG. It sounds odd, but most of the most famous RPG Maker games have little to no RPG elements in them at all, instead deciding to be visual novels or survival-horror games. This one, however, feels like an RPG, and it captures the good parts of an old 8-bit RPG. The graphics look like they're from an NES game, as does the music, but it just adds to the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In a word - meh. 8-Bit Adventures is a decent (though underwhelming) RPG that calls to mind similar retro games from the NES/Famicom era. While it definitely wears its heart on its sleeve in terms of humor and visuals, the gameplay and plot leaves something to be desired. The game follows three characters - a thief, a warrior and a mage - as they struggle to combat a malevolent force that seeks to destroy the world and mold it in their own image. If that sounds familiar at all to you, it's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great JRPG made to play like the very first games of the genre. An interesting story is packed into a not too small world that slowly unlocks for the player to explore. The graphics are intentionally kept 8 bit alike, but the actual pixel art and color choice in some cases isn't perfect. Still as a whole it works pretty well. Same goes for the sound that really sounds like an 8 bit machine, but again in some cases the tunes can get a bit too noisy and eventually on your nerves. That…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a very simple JRPG gameplay-wise. Like a gameboy version of a Final Fantasy 3-6. If the simple combat system doesn't turn you off, there's a fantastic journey to be had here! I wouldn't normally touch an RPG Maker game. Hats off to the dev for creating such a great, well told adventure that had me intrigued and captivated!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game so bad, but I can't. I can see the vision, and the story was somewhat interesting at times, but even as a user of rpg maker myself and being aware of its limitations, I just could not find much enjoyment in this game. Overall the gameplay doesn't have much depth, and it's missing a lot of QOL features. I will say though that 8-bit adventures 2 is a direct sequel to this, and it's such a monumental leap forward and is leagues better than this, so at the very least, I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Initially I was not impressed with this game because the graphics in this game are simple, low resolution and not cool. However, as I play the game, I found that the storyline is very interesting and the game world is very large, with a lot of side quests. The game mechanics is fun, and most of the boss fights are challenging enough to make me keep grinding so that I can beat all the game bosses. The achievements in this game are also interesting and several of them are "missable", which…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very nice game, even surprisingly so, was expecting much less. Everything's just right, it's not too short, but not too long either. The story felt familiar, but somehow still original, same with the battle system. It seems a lot of thought went into balancing, because no grinding was necessary. Strong enemies were manageable when underleveled, but being overleveled still provided sufficient challenge from common fights. Also, the ending, and the (rudimentary but fun) post-game made me smile,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyable RPG. Dialogues are great, this 8-bit music is great. I'm glad I tried to play, not only farm cards. Story till now is also very nice, I can't see any big minuses of The Forgotten Journey.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(This game was a gift from a friend) 8-Bit Adventures is a delightful homage to the old NES games of my childhood <3 I'll admit, the first couple hours of this game it feels pretty cliché, and I found myself wondering if it tried so hard to evoke the feeling of those old school games that it was going to feel like I'd played the game before, but despite a slow start up it does manage to create its own unique story. The story itself is well written, I didn't notice any errors in any of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The actual first thing that started to curb me from buying so many bundles is games made in RPGMaker. They're almost always generic as ♥♥♥♥, they're almost always poorly written, they're almost always no effort default sprite ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that shouldn't be allowed on steam. I had to make it a personal rule after a while that unless there was something EXTREMELY good in a bundle, if it had an RPGMaker game in it, I would just have to pass on it. This is one that slipped through the cracks, and I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are looking for an RPG that is mostly story over grinding this is the game for you. I quite enjoyed this game with all it's references to other games and familiar scapes and tropes. This game takes the aesthetics of different games and platforms even and adapts them quite nicely. I'd say it accomplishes this quite naturally, better than something like Evoland which I happened to enjoy as well. This is one of the best RPG's I've played in a while in terms of pacing. I'm unsure if it was…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Definitely one of my favorite games ever. I got this game in a bundle and I left it in my library for far too long just because I didn't have any great expectations for this game. I just thought "ey, another rpg maker, oh well". Boy, was I wrong. I'm ashamed, what was I thinking? This brilliant game made me laugh, cry, and ship characters. It's amazing how every NPC is interesting. My favorite NPC is the guard that is in love with food in Azureus. I find him so adorable everytime he becomes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't say enough about this game. Especially since there is a lot that has already been said. For me, I remember playing Final Fantasy 1 back in the day. I loved playing it, and this game reminds me a lot of that game, what with the graphics and the music. I knew even before I got this game that I would enjoy it! It's definitely different than FF1 in that you can't pick the classes you want, but sometimes it's better when you don't get to choose. I would also highly recommend this game…

neutral · AI labelView post →Holy ish, what a broken piece of crap. Who would EVER pay 9.99 for this? I changed the graphic option to fullscreen and couldn't do anything else in the option screen after that and had to ctrl alt delete to close this piece of junk. I guess that should be expected though when you're playing a game made with RPGMaker.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far this game is just tickling my childhood gamer strings! Just got past the intro's for your three main characters and I'm very intregued to see how the rest of the game is going to play out. Basically one hour in and I know it's going to be something I have to complete - that's saying a lot with my library as I generally play 20 min to an hour and slowly forget about the game unless it's one of my sandbox/strategy games I over play. :) ----Review Update - 8/18/2015---- This game hasn't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8-Bit Adventures 1 + 2 Bundle. 8-Bit Adventures 1: The Forgotten Journey Remastered Edition is a retro-styled JRPG with polish and personality, that focuses less on references (although there are plenty!) and more on telling a story... 8-Bit Adventures 2 is everything you love about NES, SNES and PS1-era JRPGs - with all of the charm, heart and soul, but none of the inconvenience. Dynamic turn-based battles & pixels with personality!
neutral · AI labelView post →One of my favourite tracks from 8-Bit Adventures 1 (and a big fan favourite too)! 😁
positive · AI labelView post →8-Bit Adventures is a game that I honestly cannot recommend. It can be really enjoyable in some spots. It has a basic story, which is one of it's strengths, and the presentation is pretty good. It's trying to pull off an 8-bit aesthetic and simplicity, reminding me of RPGs from the NES days. However, where this game falls really flat is the combat. I don't know how the developer did it, but I feel extremely weak all the time. Every battle is a slog, even utilizing the basic weakness…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well this is a slightly weird one to categorize. Let's start mechanically: With a rock-paper-scissors-y battle system that draws from Dragon Warrior, Earthbound, Final Fantasy and a variety of other sources this RPGMaker-based adventure has decent dungeon design and slightly tedious battles with little flash but decent substance. In spite of the RPS-esqe color system, you'll often just find yourself spamming out your strongest attacks and using the plentiful items to refuel, so there's less…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite minimal rpg. Has pixel art cut scenes, which are fun, and some nice conversation. Otherwise nothing to hold my interest, I'm afraid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat is painfully slow and dull. This is the barest-bones game I've played in a long time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent intro to the excellent 8-Bit Adventures 2. This one's simpler, rather short (9 hours or so for 100%), and far less polished, but still a decent game if you want a short RPG. The graphics here are definitely NES style, with similar color limits. Battle sprites are VERY pixelated, which actually matters (and helps) due to the color system. Sound design is fine, and music's solid. If you played the sequel you'd recognize some of the tracks or some of what became songs in the second…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, I did enjoy this for the most part. It feels like a passion project in the sense of classic 8-bit RPGs from the NES Era. However, graphically it's more reminiscent of someone splashing a bunch of pixels down and hoping people forget how much detail there was in an 8-bit RPG. Writing is... Not great, though being able to name your characters something lewd is enough to make me giggle. Music is fantastic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Needs a remake in a style of its sequel. Buy this only on sale and if you really want to know what the 3 hero veterans in the sequel did in detail.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You REALLY gotta iron out the usability issues with this one. You cannot change the keybinding settings because the system window that pops up requires the mouse but renders the mouse invisible, so you can't interact with the thing. The controller "layout" makes no sense but is unchangeable for this reason. And the windowed/full screen "options" are a joke. I either need a magnifying glass or I have to tolerate a super-stretched out nightmare? Got a refund requested for this and the sequel,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a retro pixel "RPG maker" style JRPG/final fantasy ripoff featuring pixel art and a fantasy theme. The developers, in a rare moment of self-awareness, make some mention that the graphics are completely awful (like, how did they manage to make an RPG Maker game look *worse* than the canned assets that ship with RPG Maker?), and instead try to argue their story is so good it will make up for the massive technical deficiencies in the game. They couldn't be more wrong, the story is the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You ever wonder what Final Fantasy would be like if it was a good game? Well this is it. This does everything right and is one of the best games in it's genre. Good story, great turn based combat with no annoying crap to ruin it. The sidequests are actually very fun and not some annoying long chore. The dungeons aren't large confusing mazes. The characters are likeable. Funny moments and cool nods to old rpgs. Just a wonderfully made game and I loved every minute of it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is moderately easy and intriguing. I have only played the game for six hours but I was enlightened and know almost everything about the game. The game brings me back to the former gaming days. If you like old games this is the equivalent of one. The game is extraordinary and intertaining. Score: 8.9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: A well made RPG-maker game, not perfect, but doesn't overstay its welcome. I will always appreciate a simple RPG that does what it attempts to do well, and doesn't push things too far. This game does this fairly well. It isn't too complicated, or try to do too much with its gameplay or story. You can easily finish it in two or three evenings, including every achievement if you are thorough. The battle system is fairly classic JRPG. Turn based, HP, MP, etc etc. Instead of elements…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8 Bit Adventures: The Forgotten Journey Remastered Edition I personally, loved playing this game, and I hope the developers coninue and make a sequel. Pro's: Unique & Interesting Story 10+ Hours of gameplay Many areas to explore Enemies & Bosses aren't that hard, but not to easy Time & Effort was put into the game Con's No sequel ;-; Dev's: Good job on the game, and hope you continue.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →simple, fun with a great story. one of the best jrpg's I've ever played.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8-bit Adventures: The Forgotten Journey is a game that should always be remembered. As a faithful, fun, and just as engaging JRPG as the ones it takes homage from (like Final Fantasy). It's in the name, after all, with all the graphics being 8-bit. You play as a Warrior, Thief, and Mage team (names you can decide for yourself) as they are brought together by an omnipotent force to save the world. Seems basic stuff, but the characters have nice banter and chemistry that makes it more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short retro-style turn-based JRPG, with charming characters, a simple story with some twists, no grinding, and a decent soundtrack. It takes around 10–15 hours to beat it, but I think that works in the game's favor, as it's a straightforward experience that doesn't overstay its welcome. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i hate to leave a thumbs down as this started off better than some of the early FF games. but steam allows for no neutrality! my main beef with the game is that it gets old pretty fast, the paper rock scissors combat is predicatble and forgettable, the writing is mediocre, etc. i kept playing because it provides the sequel some backstory, but 8 hours in (at the fire mage's staff side quest, which was ridiculously hard even at lvl 18) i threw in the towel. has a great mid section of gameboy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the game is a bit jank and falls to some of the indie RPG trappings like the references kind of sapping the game's own identity, I really ended up liking it, especially towards the end. It's a very simple JRPG, the writing is generally well though out and easily understandable and there were even a few turns that I wasn't expecting. The world and dialogue has lot of charm and personality and the little world in it is varied and quite fun to explore even if there really isn't all that much…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Though not as polished as its sequel, 8-bit Adventures 1 is still a very charming and enjoyable NES throwback.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An absolute gem of a game. Has all the feels of the 8-bit era, while still managing to set itself apart. The characters are interesting, the world well designed and the music fantastic. For any fans of classic JRPG's this is a must buy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a fairly generic RPG that is a tribute to the classic RPGs. I enjoyed the little references to the classic games. The combat gets a little boring after a while, and typing stops mattering once all your characters learn skills in other elements. I think one of the nicest thing is that if you are stuck and post a question on the forums the devs themselves come to give you a hint to let you progress. (very helpful since there are no walkthroughs online)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game! I loved the honesty. It reminded me when I was a kid playing on my Game Boy Color. Thank you for the experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I typically read the negative reviews before purchasing a game. I found there were only 6, none of which really explain why the game was good or bad. One guy b!tched about misspellings (which is rampant in many games, especially RPG Maker games). I found a few, but you can tell the creator is an actual adult with the capability to use correct grammer and context. I have played RPG Maker games where the dialogue was an adolescent nightmare. This was not at all the case. One other person…
