Almost There: The Platformer

Sprint between saw blades while dodging homing missiles. Duck under lasers while the floor crumbles beneath you. Almost There was designed specifically for fans of the hardcore platforming genre - you've been warned. From the Steam store page

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 184 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (313 of 486 positive).
Players find the game extremely challenging, with tight time constraints and a punishing difficulty curve. [1][2][3] The wall jump mechanic is widely criticized as frustrating and physically demanding, often causing hand strain. [4][5][6] Some reviewers consider the game generic and not worth the price, recommending it only on deep sale. [7][8][9]

I wanted to enjoy "Almost There: The Platformer," but several key issues have turned what could have been a fun experience into a frustrating one. Firstly, the tight time constraints are incredibly unforgiving. I hate how little time you have to complete each level, and the fact that the timer starts before the cube even spawns is infuriating. Additionally, the random milliseconds needed for a three-star rating feel …

TLDR; Not worth the $1 I bought it for on sale. Can't say I recommend this game at all, even on sale. The physics feels really awful, the walljump mechanics are probably the worst I've ever seen, and a large portion of the level design is just uninteresting or annoying. It isn't fun to complete casually and it isn't fun to 100% either. There's plenty of better cheap platformers to play, go play one of those.

The title Almost There feels painfully accurate, like I'm gasping my way through a killer HIIT set while a trainer yells, "Almost there!"

Quick Score: 3/5 Notes: Pretty generic platformer with a bizzare wall climb/jump mechanic. For 10$ this is a hard pass, but if you can pick it up on sale for the regular 90% off I think it's good enough for a playthrough. PRO TIP: The games wall jump mechanic is incredibly painful if you try to hold the controller regularly. The optimal way to play this game I discovered pretty early on is to move with left analog …

I don't recommend this for gamers with hand strain injuries It's kinda meh for me. and most of the negatives stems from the awful wall climb movement. The game recommends playing with a controller, but if you aren't a controller geometry dash gamer, then use a keyboard. There are too many of the left/right wall climbs that will start to hurt your hand after a while. Maybe I am doing it wrong but I don't think the …

Almost There: The Platformer is okay, it certainly isn't good, and I think it really lacks in the fun factor. For me, I didn't play it much, because I couldn't get into it. The game is difficult though not unfair. It's just a minimalist range-inducing platforming game with some really frustrating levels and mechanics. The reason I am giving…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Challenging hard platform game, i would recommend only if you want a real challenge. It's like a great mix of Super Meat Boy and Geometry Dash! There is achievements and trading cards too! I recommend
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A sorry excuse for a Super Meat Boy clone. Why would you play the chinese knock off when you can have the real deal with Super meat Boy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played better platformers, and so have you.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually like these sort of games, but precision platformers are only as good as the levels are. There are some pretty fun levels in the 1st and 3rd world, 2nd world is pretty void of interesting stages. . Most levels in this game are just annoying, frustratingly tedious, or just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It goes for the quantity over quality approach. . Side scrolling levels are boring as ♥♥♥♥, you spend 8 seconds standing still, do 2 jumps, and back to standing still. . Levels that make you climb up huge…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is ridiculously hard. The required times for 3 Stars are insanity, have fun going through demonic fast-paste action in order to accomplish 100% completion.

neutral · AI labelView post →MY GAME. ALMOST THERE. SOON ENOUGH.
neutral · AI labelView post →Not recommended: - Wall jumping controls, and interactions in general, are awful - Many levels with lots of waiting - Level design gets repetitive; one(-ish) enemies for 50-ish levels per world doesn't allow for much creative freedoms.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only difficulty in this game is not having your hands hurt after just spamming wall jumps, learning routes and everything isn't even difficult its just based on how fast you can spam left/right most of the time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game with a special wall jump technique that I personally don't really enjoy and because of that I'm pretty positive it's impossible to beat this game with keyboard, you will need a controller for this game. Cons: -Achievements unlock only when you close the game, and 'beat world x tier x' achievements is bugged sometimes and you have to replay some levels again to unlock it. -No option to change keybinds and vibration.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Score: 4/10 I would put this review in the middle if it was an option, but most likely would lean towards not recommending it. Very generic and boring platformer, that focuses most of the levels on wall climbing, which the game does a very bad job on. The optimal way to go as fast as possible up walls is to spam left and right, and my fingers are hurting as I am writing this review. It also has very inconsistent star times as some levels are completely free and some levels are pretty tough to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gimmick here in this game is the wall jump. First of all, wall jump in a platformer game is pretty common and I'm completely fine with it but the gimmick here is that you can't jump while on the wall, so you have to do left and right movement to climb up constantly which I found it annoying in the later levels. There's some scenario that this mechanic will screw you up especially when you try to go down normally, just touching a tiny bit of the wall and you just go up if you press…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very good but very hard platformer game.

neutral · AI labelView post →A frustratingly imprecise precision platformer. Walls are very sticky and after ~100 levels I still can't consistently move in the intended direction off a wall slide. As for level design, there's far too much reliance on homing missiles to create difficulty and the occasional level with a slow moving platform is more painful than 100 deaths. Overall I found this more annoying than rewarding.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're looking for a relaxing game this isn't it; if you like being a sweaty perfectionist then this game is for you. Looked like a nice chill game but the timings for 3 star are insane; then other levels seem too easy to get 3 stars not very consistent.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →would have been a lot better without constant wall climbing 6/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not worth €8.19. Expect to be entertained for like 10 minutes and then be extremely bored. It's on sale right now for €0.81 which resembles a price range closer to the amount of fun you'll experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Precision platformer with imprecise controls. Jump with "A" but when you're on a wall, wall jumping becomes the joystick, which leads to unintentional mini-jumps. Sliding down / dropping from a wall is also super finicky. Nothing new in terms of gameplay or level design that hasn't been done before. 155 levels, ~3 hours to beat it.

neutral · AI labelView post →Simple graphics but addictive gameplay requiring sharp reflexes and patience. Prepare for funny falls and moments of exciting challenge a great platformer that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bargain-bin clone of Super Meat Boy, with all the frustration that entails. The spammy wall jump mechanic in particular is practically begging players to develop RSIs. Meh.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not a huge fan of precision platformers, so I didn't want to have this bias in the review. But after my fingers started hurting in the first world from the wall climbing, I don't think it would be fair to still have it recommended. Too much quantity over quality makes the many levels not that interesting to go through, with a lot of rehashing. If you really like platforming, maybe, but clearly I won't be coming back.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Almost good, just the same 2 mechanics more or less. Sticking to wall and jumping off of that to avoid obstacles, which I would have been fine with it, but the control is VERY weird, not comfortable, or maybe it's my brain idk. Also, I kept sticking to walls when I wanted to free fall, very annoying, doesn't let the game free flow is not the best for me with these kind of platforming games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Your fingers will hurt from spamming the wall jumps.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little game with 155 well-crafted levels. There are a few unusual mechanics such as being able to jump mid-air once after a walljump. This means there is a LOT of pressing left and right repeatedly as fast as you can to climb vertical walls quickly - which I thought is fun but it can be physically hard on the fingers after a while. ~9 hours to 100% completion, decent game, maybe not for $10 but it regularly goes on a -90% sale. Achievements only pop after closing the game and can take…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A platformer where you jump with the left and right keys.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has what is almost certainly the worst physics I've experienced in any platformer I've played so far. Asset flipped achievement spam trash felt better to play than this. Free wouldn't be cheap enough.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even though I want to think as a game on its own, it really feels like Super Meat Boy without the fluidity and the blood It always feels very stiff and it physically hurts my thumb going left and right for 5 minutes
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game was kind of a repetitive one, since some of the stages were almost identical. very basic platformer.. kind of boring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine if N++ didn’t have the detailed level editor, the wide variety of interesting and unique obstacles to overcome, the massive selection of levels, and the striking visual style. That’s Almost There. You are a white cube, and you need to reach the goal by jumping and wall jumping and that’s it, I’ve already described the whole game. Look, I get it - some people might enjoy a game this simple, where the only real gameplay comes from perfecting your movements to get through the courses in…

Are you even reading this or just end up in the wrong part of the steam reviews and dozing off to my voice? It's a 2-bit graphics hardcore platformer, there are no graphics and ambient music, silly! Some ok levels and some quite hard, didn't reach them all of course but for perfect runs you'll have to work hard.. The fast-level-reset is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wish there was a 'meh' rating option. Because this game is just that. It's not bad, but not good. It seems far too much like a mobile game that was converted into a computer game, but there is nothing actually wrong with it. I wouldn't be caught dead paying for this, though, because you can download countless other games that are the exactly the same as this one on the appstore. You could probably even Google 'platformer games' and get a pretty similar flash game. It was a bit of a let…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fast, Frustrating Precision Platforming That Lives on Patience Almost There: The Platformer is a minimalist, precision-focused platformer built around speed, timing, and repeated failure. It strips the genre down to its essentials: tight jumps, instant restarts, and levels designed to test your reflexes and tolerance for frustration. The game makes no attempt to ease players in gently, from the first stages onward, it demands accuracy and persistence. The core gameplay is straightforward.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Final stretch! Game is playable but still missing intro and ending illustrations, some balancing, some menu tweaks and options and more gamefeel. And music, we have been absolutely unable to find proper music for this game! x( #gamedev #almostthere
neutral · AI labelView post →Rating:6/10 Completion difficulty:8/10 Both controller and mouse and keyboard are fine This is a "rage" game, sure, but you can do a lot harder. The artstyle is simple and the levels are decent, though the controls are very slightly janky- and that's enough to bring frustration to the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun little challenging 2d platformer. I am not usually a big fan of these kinds of games normally, but I got this in a bundle. It is fun and hard, but I wouldn't call it an impossible platformer. Visually it strikes the perfect balance of simplicity and still conveys what everything does. It has very tight controls which are important for these kinds of games, they recommend playing with a gamepad, but all but a few select levels could be completed while playing with the keyboard, and those…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WORTH EVERY CENT GAME! I had 1 dollar to spend on steam. I searched for games cheaper than that. And I found this game (it was on sale). Initially, I thought it would be boring, but I changed my mind. This game is so good, and I kept playing it more and more until I finished it (by the way, I played it offline so it wasn’t recorded and won’t show the actual time recorded).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, yeah ... the game is really nice, it's not for high-end computers and it looks very nice. As the creators themselves say - we will die many times, which is true. It is quite a difficult game, even for the biggest fans of platformers. There are like 150 levels in the game. Levels where you will swear, sweat, surrender and try just to get to the finish line. Each level can be completed with one, two or three stars, depending on how long it takes us to overcome all obstacles and pass it. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible first impression, failed the 10 minute sales pitch. Unsatisfying movement 'feel' fails to compensate for the boring aesthetic. The delay for quickly restarting after hitting the end of a level really irks me. Early reliance on wall hopping confirmed the unfun design choices signaled by the other negative reviews.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun & challenging platformer. The game recommends using a gamepad however I found it much easier to just use the arrow keys on a keyboard albeit a bit more uncomfortable
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is like a mixture of super mario and mega man without enemies. You basically just jump and try to land on where to go without falling off or getting hit. It's a cheap game don't buy it full price get it on sale. I wouldn't recommend buying this game unless you want to waste money or just try it for yourself.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →really good game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's feels kinda jank. The acceleration mechanic breaks flow, and the constant zoomed-out-ness strains my eyes. There is also absolutely no telegraphing on off-screen shooting saws and kaizo spikes that just start moving. At least it lets you skip the unfair levels once you've given em a try. It would be nice tho if there was a way to get back to the level select screen from a level without entering the main menu.
