What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 146 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (163 of 260 positive).
Players praise the faithful remake of the classic Genesis game, with updated graphics and music. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the game is short and recommend buying it on sale. [4][5][6] Several players criticize the controls and bugs, especially with controllers and save data. [7][8][9]

The game itself is good, but the gamepad functionality was mishandled by whoever did the porting. One controller resets the game with the press of a thumbstick, the other one does the same if I configure that gamepad to my preferred layout. Should the other games of the franchise make it onto Steam, I will ignore them based on how this game was handled thus far. Fix this, if you want my money for future games.

At the price of $20 USD, this...this is bad. TLDR The graphics and sounds ARE better than the sega genesis (but cheap looking), there is a level select, there are a few bonus content type things, and voice acting, but that's about it. Menus are buggy as hell, it HATES full screen, and the menus are weird before you set it to controller. The game makes me think of something on newgrounds or some browser based flash …

Hello, First off this is a dream come true to see the first VG. i ever played revived. This is a great remaster, i love the way the shield works similair to Valken (Cybernator) The redone music is pretty good, And you can unlock the classic music for arcade mode which is cool. The 3 Documents you can look through in the extras are also pretty sweet. For someone like me who loves every bit of info i can get about …

A remake of Sega Mega Drive classic Assault Suit Leynos (Target Earth on the US Genesis), the first game in the underrated Assault Suits series best known for Assault Suits Valken (censored and released as Cybernator in the US). With both a fun, if a little easy, main arcade mode that re-imagines the game and adds references to Valken and a more hardcore classic mode that plays closer to the original game. The 2D …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The game's PS4 version received an aggregate score of 67/100 on Metacritic, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Jeremy Peeples of Hardcore Gamer rated the game 4/5 points, saying that "it takes everything that worked about the original and improves upon it with modern flourishes". Expressing surprise that the original game was even playable without a modern stick setup, he called the remake more forgiving, yet still challenging. He praised the new graphics as a "huge upgrade", but criticized the explosions as too large. He also called the soundtrack unexciting. Ramón Nafria of Vandal rated the game 7.5/10, calling it "difficult, intense and epic", but said that it would most appeal to…

It was a dream come true to officially localize a Saturn game, and a blast to get to play in the AS universe fresh off the excellent Valken rerelease and Leynos 1 remake. It’s out on Steam and Xbox today!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Assault Suit Leynos is a mecha platformer, similar to Assault Suits Valken (a.k.a. Cybernator for the SNES). It is designed as an arcade game that can be finished in two hours casually, or much faster if you practice speedrunning it. The story is a pretty basic Gundam (Universal Century 0078) derivative, so its main strength is in the gameplay. Standard mode on easy difficulty is very casual-friendly, with regenerating health and plenty of opportunities to tradeoff weapon variety for more…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's cool to play, the mecha is full of weight, which is much better than other mecha game in which the mecha is more like a person with mecha skin. But the designer of your last level is the brain disability, the length of the level is 4 times longer than normal level. AND the most important thing is that this game got no pause. How ridiculous!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Target Earth? Assault Suit Leynos? Genesis? Windows? It doesn't matter what you call it or what you play it on, which version you pick up or whether it's one with checkpoints or limited lives. Assault Suit Leynos is an underrated Masaya gem that you should play.
positive · AI labelView post →Cannot recommend it as a PC game. While the art is okay even with some updated assets the style is very much showing it's age. Controls are not customize-able & are hard coded to a very awkward scheme. With out mouse aiming it still plays very much like trying to run a Playstation game on PC... things are just messy. The menu to quit the game is a VERY un-intuative P button... well away from any other controls & the game does not respond to the enter key... even when it says "push button".…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No. Terrible controls require quite a lot of effort to get into. Meanwhile go for GIGANTIC ARMY and STEEL STRIDER if you are looking for a mech game that looks & plays like this but it is not hamstrung by controls. I get that the controls are learnable. Yes i managed to finally do the tutorial 1 under 60 seconds and all but man does it take effort. And when it takes effort like that just to not die by pressing the wrong button the fun goes out the window since you are now vulnerable to the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is like trying to play an early 90s PC DOS in window10, sure there may be work arounds, but the game isnt fun enough to even want to put in the time. As far as HD goes, looks like 640x480 at best, lasttime I checked HD is 720P and above. I think if you are into hardcore oldschool mech games its fine, but for a modern gamer its a pass....

neutral · AI labelView post →Game is badly bugged as it sometimes doesn't register your controller and deletes any save data you have even if you close the game normally.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Partial controller support? Not sure if this is what they are referencing :). But pressing anything on my xbox controller crashes the game to the main menu.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't like to make serious reviews but this game is ayuss. The third stage literally has you standing in one place mashing the punch button as an endless conga line of 1 enemy type runs straight into your fist and dies. Then, after a certain amount of tedium, the game teleports you to the center of the level to fight a boss without killing off any of the remaining conga line. This means that if you weren't past the middle of the stage, all of the conga line runs straight into the base you…

Imagine my joy when I discovered that a PC remake was released in August! A Faithful recreation of Target earth with some nifty changes, amazing graphics and familiar gameplay? SIGN. ME. UP! positive · AI labelView post →This game is a rusty old mobile suit you found in an abandoned hanger. If you're technical enough, or just obsessed enough, you can jump through all of the hoops needed to get it running. If you're the right kind of person, this game will be special enough to warrant that effort. Leynos is a short, but technical game that lets you fly around like a maniac putting your robotic fist through the windshields of enemy pilots, and has some of the best zero-gravity combat in any game ever. Want to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →nice remake of a classic. games like this show you can make games hard without 1hit death's. i just wish recent dev's would learn something here but i fear it's done out of laziness and lack of ability. anyway there are 2 modes the new or classic versions of the game and you can take 6 items on each of the 8 mission with and without gravity. the items you can use range from weapons, jets, shield (blocks shots), and/or more armor and you'll unlock more as you play. i never played this before…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is great. It is also very short and has no multiplayer. Get it on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately I would not recommend this game. The controls are really rough. They need remapping. I could hardly figure out how to even start the game. Game play experience was major a impact on this title.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR - A buggy mess with bad design. I recommend Gigantic Army instead. Right off the bat, input does not work correctly. The game launches and starts an intro/attract mode and you cannot get out of it. Enter, spacebar, gamepad buttons, nothing. Pressing escape instantly quits the game. You have to press 'z' to go to the menu and then turn gamepad on. In game, double tapping the shoot button reloads your gun and this is not configurable. So when you shoot an enemy, stop, then shoot…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What this game looks like it should be based on the videos and screenshots would be pretty cool, unfortunately the controls, menus, and general game design does not live up to it. -You get to customize your loadout every story mission, but in the first mission you don't have anything to switch out so it's just a waste of time as you try and re-try as the difficulty is ridiculous. This also adds frustration as you can't just hit a "confirm" button to continue, you have to scroll down to a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If the controls were a lot better in this then it could be a good game but since they are not it's a no from me. I tried but there is just so much more out there that plays so much better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a janky game. The bosses feel clumsy and the mech suit has no weight or feel to it. Really disappointed I went in hearing this was like cybernator (assault suits valken). While some of the mechanics are there it definitely is not it. Apparently its a remake of Assault Suit Leynos for the Sega Genesis? I kind of wish they would have modernized the mechanics. Came back to try and beat this game. Got to the final boss. Accidentally looked away to see how the hell people beat the bullet…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How on earth can you ruin a SHMUP this badly? Before I begin, I have to adress the elephant in the room, the controls, particularly the lack of the right analog stick's use. You have to aim and move with the left analog stick which is a nightmare. The game itself starts off fine and all until you get to the first boss... suddenly a time limit appears, it took me a while to figure out that there even was a time limit because the UI isn't very clear to the player. Basically you have to kill this…

positive · AI labelView post →My latest pickups. Shinobi is in excellent condition and Assault Suit Leynos 2 is a fun little game on the Saturn though can be a bit too tough for its own good at times! The release has the usual helpful modern bells and whistles such as rewinding and saving but otherwise is just an emulated port.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I grew up playing Target Earth. This is as true to the original as it can get, and I like it. I'm really glad I picked it up, it's a lot of feel good nostalgia. Says a lot, as I don't normally like games like this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice graphics, but some of the worst levels and bosses I've experienced in a long time. Not a horrible game, just amateurish and unfun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ah...this negative review makes me a little bit sad. I have fond memories of this game from back when I owned a megadrive, and the thought of a tasty modern upgrade was quite appealing. It perhaps isn't a game packed with sexy setpieces (I can't recall) but it was quite punchy in the action. When it was recently bundled it seemed like a surefire recipe for happiness........and then I played it. Civilisation didn't collapse, my dog wasn't run over in the street, nor did I, or a dearly loved…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wasn't as good as I expected it to be. This game feels really lazy. It's like they just took what they had from GunHound EX, created leynos graphics, added voice acting, but did not have enough time to make the game. Stage bosses are terrible especially in the later stages. They just repeat one attack that reminds you of a bullethell game. This also makes it feel like they have way too much HP. If you launched the game for the first time with a gamepad plugged in and notice that no buttons…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a remake of the Sega Genesis classic "Target Earth" that was hard as balls and rad as ♥♥♥♥. While it's a lot less difficult, and the sometimes sketchy translation blunts the coolness, I still greatly enjoyed playing and 100%ing it! It's a difficult title to recommend at its current pricepoint, mostly because of its fairly arcade-game length. It suffers problems in respects to bugs (a lot of having to do things over with achievements), and I have a number of nit-picks about how the…

I think it qualifies as a shmup, and I'm curious why you disqualify it? If the IREM Collections are bad... that sucks. I've got all three on my wishlist. positive · AI labelView post →This is a remake of the classic Assault Suit Leynos It's a great old-school side-scrolling mecha game, remade and updated with new graphics that still retain the spirit of the original game. It even has voice acting and art gallery if you're a fan of the original game. neutral · AI labelView post →I really don't like twin stick shooters. This game is not a twin stick shooter. I wish this game was a twin stick shooter. My main motivation for playing this was to understand the story before playing its SNES sequel (Cybernator) so I set it to easy difficulty and started shooting away. The difficulty is weird as hell, the first missions being a walk in the park and the 8th being pretty hard and going on forever (turns out it was not that hard, you just gotta use the good red weapons you get…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game looks cool, reminds me of Metal Warriors for the SNES but the control scheme is ATROCIOUS! I've never seen a game mess the control mapping up so hard like this one. It's so bad that you wouldn't even believe me if I said that Xbox One left thumbstick makes the game reset over and over as you tilt it to the right as soon as you start the game, LOL. Even after mapping the controls for the "Xbox 360" scheme, things still don't work right, it's impossible to switch weapons properly and…

The music was awesome the story was on par with any old school mecha anime (Macross, Gundam, Votoms, etc.) This remake captures all the story with new twists and difficulties. The music was redone and it's awesome and nostalgic. I'm a gen X'er that was actually there when this came out 28 years ago unlike millennials giving this a bad review because…

As the predecessor to the SNES classic Cybernator (the western name for Assault Suits Valken, the second game), Leynos bears a strong resemblance to that game. It has the heavy mech movement, the hover jump, a selection of weapons, and a handy shield (though it's considerably less handy here, being directional, unlike in Cybernator). There are definitely some modern…
