What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 184 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (332 of 371 positive).
Players praise the game's humor and charm, calling it genuinely funny and unique. [1][2][3] Many note its heavy inspiration from Undertale, with some feeling it is too derivative. [4][5][6] Some reviewers find the writing and humor off-putting or the combat frustrating. [7][8][9]

Promises: + The story being focused about you that is infinitely re-playable where choices matter and many can be made. + Chill mode being meaningful as a option for casual players that totally fix's the games combat issues. + The online rhapsody system making a meaningful difference in story. + Having a great story and good writing and humor. Reality's: - The story isn't about you the player but more about the game …

I think the game is fine overall - it's just not for me. There's clear effort and labor put into it, it's clearly well loved and a passion project, and it is, for the better or worse, unapologetically itself. If you've loved undertale and wanted it dialed up to 1000%, then this will definitely speak to you. The game is so absurd and surreal, it's like if you put all the most wacky and stupid moments of undertale …
- [1]
A lot of the emotional moments dont land (aside from a lot of true ending content) and is too similar to Undertale in a lot of cases but I still highly recommend just for how damn funny this game is. The humor rarely misses. A playthrough is worth it for the humor alone.

A very good quirky rpg. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and the art is quite good. The game looks rather beautiful in some areas. The bullet hell patterns are pretty creative and mostly free of unfair ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The dialogue is well written and the humor is quite funny consistently. It very obviously takes inspiration from undertale with the three possible routes, and two of those three are very well developed …

I'm almost 30 and I think this is one of the few games that genuinely made me happy this year. I haven't finished but it's still really good I haven't stopped smiling.
Summarised from 34 of the 232 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 13, 2026. How summaries are made
87% of the 184 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Athenian Rhapsody. The complaint that keeps coming up: too similar to Undertale in many aspects. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

neutral · AI labelView post →I hope I don't seem too harsh in this review, I wanted to like this game, but it just wasn't working for me. It just feels a bit too derivative. To set up what I've experienced in the game thus far: I started out in a weird place as the only human where two monsters set up traps for me. One of the traps involved a math worksheet sitting on the ground that I simply walked over. There are a bunch of cute little monster creatures that talk in a cutesy way and all look alike (although at least they…

neutral · AI labelView post →People are going ABSOLUTELY INSANE saying ♥♥♥♥ like "Athenian Rhapsody tries too hard to be the next undertale" and "it doesnt even take itself seriously"... Did you even play the FREAKING game?!?!?? if you do all the endings you'll see that everything makes sense on its own way, it doesnt go "silly and stupid to serious suddenly close to end" its the THING of the game dawg. EVERYTHING is ALWAYS silly and stupid. I'm an old undertale fan and one of my favorite games is deltarune, but this is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game but the writing made me want to bash my head against a wall until I couldn't read anymore.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played a bit of Stalker 2 and Genshin Impact, but I'm bouncing on both I used to enjoy games like this, but really having to prioritize rn to play through games I love. After the AMAZING Metaphor and the excellent Athenian Rhapsody, I'm having a hard time finding my next game to love.
positive · AI labelView post →What if Undertale was trying too hard?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Athenian Rhapsody is a tough one to talk about, and that's probably by deign. Like some others have pointed out, this really feels like it wants to be the next Undertale/Deltarune. Like the parallels are really obvious, it wears its inspiration on its sleeve. But to me, it comes across as an experience that wants to have its cake and eat it too. You'll spend hours slowly walking around and getting into battles with wacky creatures making dog bark and fart noises, but then after 9ish hours they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this one, I even backed it on Kickstarter at a high tier. But this just was not for me at all. It felt like it didn't have a story at all until the end, I know the game says to create your own stories but it's too linear to really do that. Have played the game twice now and each time I get stuck in Athens and can't find like 75% of the party members. Maybe I'm just dumb but I seriously have no idea how I could have missed that many TWICE. I wish there was at least a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The humor gets kinda stale after an hour or 2. The mostly unlikable characters do not help with this. Gameplaywise the constant backtracking and repetition of the same enemies you've already fought 20 times gets boring too. Apparently this game is supposed to be played through several times, but I got right up to the end of my first one and never found the motivation or interest to actually finish.

neutral · AI labelView post →Hello friends, Today I will review the game Athenian Rhapsody. This game is based on the same style that Undertale follows. If you never played Undertale, there are certain ways to play it. This game also has those similar ways to play it. Most of the game is surreal and weird. The player will meet many wacky individuals in the game to interact with. Each NPC has their own story and personality. The quirky writing and style of the game may turn off some players, but the game does have a story…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine a game that is inspired by Undertale, while clearly being it's own thing, and also doesn't shame you for killing people who literally tried to kill a child. Very funny, has a surprisingly chill outlook, and has a rabbit cowboy who strums a guitar and is the coolest. Download it now Cornball.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Deltarune if it wasn't freaking around While you could take a glance at it and call it some "le quirky undertale clone about le depression" it would be a huge disservice. Athenian Rhapsody has it's own story to tell, one of self reflection, with the whole thing being a test recorded in a save file you can show your friends. All while wrapped in a much more comedic style as compared to similar titles. It's genuinely one of the most charming games I have played in a long while. And all of it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, no option to mute or lower the volume of music. Second of all - this game is very boring, writing and humour is cringe and not interesting, lots of interruptions, the battles are super simple and overall gameplay is repetitive and just not fun for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of the emotional moments dont land (aside from a lot of true ending content) and is too similar to Undertale in a lot of cases but I still highly recommend just for how damn funny this game is. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh boy, I got a few: Athenian Rhapsody riffs off of Undertale/Deltarune combat by making it even more Wario Ware, and playing a new game of it will give you a different experience, as will another, and another! You can even swap end-game cards with friends to share your game file!
positive · AI labelView post →Let me preface by saying, overall, it is a pretty good game. However, let’s get this out of the way. This is basically an Undertale fan game. There are elements that feel like 1 to 1 copies , and that is fine. Undertale was a huge game, and it makes sense that it would inspire games heavily . The combat is solid, and it is mostly charming. I know some people feel like Undertale’s humor was forced, or “cringe” , but I always felt those people were just being joyless. However, AR kind of…

neutral · AI labelView post →After a couple of hours playing, I really wanted to like this game, but it's not really doing it for me. I'm always up for a wacky story, but so far, I don't feel there's a story in there, also the humor/jokes didn't make it for me. I was doing a pacifist run, and I'd normally wouldn't complain about the difficulty of the mini-games or the weird hitboxes, but the rest of the game and casts of character didn't encourage me to keep trying at them. On a good note, music is awesome and the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Allow me to preface this with the positives as despite two VERY strong gripes with the game it is overall fantastic. I have played the two main routes and will do the 3rd middle of the road route later. OK so here's the deal. Everyone can tell this game is inspired by Undertale but the combat and Burst system give it enough flare to stand on its own, with the narrative exploring different themes than Undertale. The cast of party members are charming with varied skillsets, albeit with some…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is enjoyable and the characters are fun. People are a bit too hard on this developer since this is his first game he ever made and this is ambitious title for a first game. The humor isn't my flavor of tea but it still squeezed a laugh out of me occasionally just by being so over the top dumb sometimes, coming back to this after playing deltarune chapter 3 and 4 I think people using those games are a comparison is unfair and I think there's a cult of personality thing simply because…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Firstly, this game is very bright, very colorful the music is very dynamic and memorable, and the characters all have personality traits that make them either endearing or funny. Secondly, if you don't like rhythm games and memorizing attack patterns, this is not the game for you. Thirdly, even though I haven't finished the game I've enjoyed a played so far, even though the combat is pretty unforgiving.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Leave Undertale in the back of your fridge for too long, replace the meta horror with low-brow humor and semi-swears, make it play Touhou during a blood moon, lock it in a barrel in your basement for a few months to ferment, Recite some dark spells, feed it after midnight, and toss it out of a moving car. Then, let your younger sibling draw on it with their new scented markers, and force feed it the Ipad they watch videos on at the restaurant. Finally, hit it with a comically large cartoon…

positive · AI labelView post →Like if Earthbound, Wario ware and Undertale all had a baby, but does it's own thing enough to be unique too. Though a lot of the characters can be a little...out there, true, that uniqueness of it all was what won me over, and there can be some surprisingly sentimental moments in parts depending on your actions as well. Definitely a game that encourages observing the wacky world around you as well, and a fun experience due to that and it being as unique as previously stated. "I'm about to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a fun game. I kinda do not like how easy it was for me to fall into a neutral ending. Regardless, after seeing the endings and fighting the fights. I have irritable bowel syndrome now, and all I was given was the power to smell rocks. Long story short, don't steal your mom's credit card and just play the game already.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At times I feel like it can take a bit too much from undertale but I think where this game really stands out is in it's personality/comedy. It's a surprisingly linear game but it was a fun time all the way through
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game softlocks in the lullaby route if you dont pick up some item you HAVE to buy in some out there location. cannot get past olympius due to not being able to access the meesha fight. other than that the game just feels really all over the place and tries to mimic other games too hard instead of actually being original. lacks its own identity imo. im not resetting my game in order to finish this game brah. clown react me all you want. ik yall gonna get pissy at me for doing the lullaby…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Athenian Rhapsody is the best Undertale-like i played so far, the game itself takes an huge inspiration from Undertale (gameplay, story, characters) but at the same time ARhap has its own personality. The game is fun, I laugh a lot trough my run, it's one of the few games where I like all the side quests that imo are quite fun, the side characters (the optional ones) are all unique and fun in their own way, ARhap has a lot of good ideas but the best thing of the game is the (almost) infinite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I could love this game. But I don't. Overall, I didn't have a great time playing it. Although the game does do a few things right: Visuals and music. So many details and so much love there. Couldn't find songs that stick in my head but definitely worth listening to. Graphics are beautiful and funny. (Although I would have liked to see more women in the ranks of the NPCs. Yes, many NPCs are animals/monsters, but they mostly seem like a male read to me.) Well.. but that's the point…

neutral · AI labelView post →Don't get me wrong I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love Undertale and Deltarune. I see so much love from this and how it loves the style and humor of Undertale and Deltarune, its just... trying too much for me. I could already tell where it was going at first when most of the time its people just joking 24/7 in the game. But Toby knows how to mix the joking side of Undertale/Deltarune with the seriousness which this game just doesn't have. Playing this there was just not one real moment that felt original,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →#JustBeatIt @polykillpodcast.bsky.social No.258 Athenian Rhapsody (NSW). Have Undertale, Megami Tensei and Mother 3 smoke weed and you get this game. A strange, but fun RPG with dodge mechanics. The dialogue and whimsical nature does gets grating, but the game is short enough it's not gamebreaking.
neutral · AI labelView post →I love how silly everyone is. 10/10 The voices are getting louder please help
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's essentially a mix of undertale, earthbound with a sprinkle of pokemon for how they do timed events in this game. (They cycle around, so don't worry, but it does feel like you're waiting for a mystery gift event for a special pokemon, however here it's in the shape of rhapsodies, feels amazing) Personally love the humour and the characters, the game doesn't take itself to seriously. Although it repeats alot of jokes from time to time, I don't really have an issue with it, I find myself…

neutral · AI labelView post →Its hard not to compare this to undertale, it's directly inspired... but it's really good! Overall I really enjoyed it. Gameplay is fun, you have the standard three routes. The pacing feels about right, though running around getting all the party members will add an hour or two. The writing is very goofy; the humor is very gen-z/discord humor, the jokes can be hit & miss. One thing I have to criticize is the whole event system. Locking the player out of timed downloadable events is really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man, what a game. It feels like me and my group of friends got together and said "Eff it, lets make a game with a bunch of jokes we would use and say". The music? Had some bangers in it too. A good message through the game and especially at the True ending run. I would recommend people play it even though it is a bit Random and Wild at times. TIME TO DOWNLOAD MUNCHKINS!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Athenian Rhapsody is a game made by a single developer, and despite this it's one of the best games I've had the pleasure of playing. It's funny, emotional, and challenging. Especially the ending that I got, it really hit me in the feels. I can't go into details because of spoilers, but it was very impactful. Sometimes the humor is hit or miss, but I found most of it funny. Sometimes the combat is hit or miss with it's difficulty/hitboxes, but every victory felt satisfying nonetheless. Where…
