The player controls Enzo Kori-Odan, the prince of Zama, who… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

There just are not enough video games based and themed around African culture, not only on Steam but video games in general. It’s an all too often forgotten and unexplored setting. Players who liked Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan talk about unique African-themed setting and lore; those who didn't talk about awful keyboard and mouse controls. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Destructoid's Joe Parlock thought that Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan "looks fantastic". Kill Screen's Michelle Ehrhardt thought that Aurion is "a loveletter" to games and shows such as Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball Z and saying "Aurion asserts that Africa is just as capable of creating wonder and fantasy as any other culture (perhaps even more so)". Christ Priestman, also of Kill Screen, called the game "accessible" and spoke of its "global appeal". Kyle LeClair of Hardcore Gamer gave the game a 3.5 out of 5 saying, " The end result is an African tale that should at least be commended for its ambition and desire to share such traditional fables with the rest of the world, along with its…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll put the negatives first because I think that will help anyone reading this decide whether they want to play it or not: - the m/kb controls are AWFUL (not the worst I've ever played, Mirror's Edge, but they definitely took a while to get used to. I'd recommend to use an Xbox controller if you have one) - some images and cutscene videos are pretty low res - the game froze for me a few times when there were a lot of enemies on screen at once + Beautiful graphics, with a different look and…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not only is Aurion the indie game that has come the closest to nailing what I love about the Tales series combat but its setting being inspired by Africa and its mythology makes for a world that feels truly unique amongst videogames. store.steampowered.com/app/368080/A...
positive · AI labelView post →There's a lot of things that are almost there for this game, but not quite. The combat system is innovative, but not polished or challenging at all. The animation style helps characterize the sprites, but looks a bit cheesy against a static background and has resolution issues. The story was intriguing, but never particularly interesting. All in all, the excessively stilted game design around combat is a huge part of why I can't recommend this game. Most of the important story and battle beats…

I could not play this game. I'm working on getting a minimum of an hour of playtime in all 600 games in my library and this one was a slog. The art is alright, the music is alright, the animations are two frames each and terrible, the story makes me care less about the characters and it feels like a 14 year old with rpg maker…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game reminds me of all the good times I had playing Tales of Phantasia back in the SNES era, and has a very interesting setting free of much of the usual "medieval knights and sorcery" cliches. Animation is a bit rudimentary but the art is great, gameplay takes some time to learn but is challenging but not unfair, the main characters are a bit paint-by-numbers but their development and exploration shows them in new and interesting lights as the story progresses, and I could hug whoever of…

With global acclaim and a powerful vision, KIRO'O Games is building Africa’s most inspiring digital catalog one game, one story at a time! #BlackVoicesinGaming
neutral · AI labelView post →How this game has such a high rating is beyond me. Interesting setting aside, when comparing this game to others of it's genre it shows very low production value: Character art and style of the main characters itself may be good, but animations, sound, controls and especially the UI / UX is very poor and could need lots of polishing. Yes it is an indie game, but nowadays indie games are all I play, and this one sadly is a poor contender when it comes to polishing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What makes a fantasy story? It's a question that has plenty of answers, but as far as the general public consciousness and especially as far as video games, "fantasy" tends to gravitate towards certain common tropes. There's magic, good monarchies, evil empires, often some sort of destiny, perhaps a generational cycle extending back centuries, some kind of god-figure (whether actual or just some Great Person), some kind of opposing devil-figure, sometimes the power of friendship, and an…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aurion is an African themed, story driven RPG which uses a free-roaming mode and a 2D linear action combat system. The game pushes a number of unique boundaries at the same time, being the first major African themed RPG since Quest For Glory 4. The art style is also unique, and not bad, but unfortunately the art assets are all fairly low resolution which ends up looking less than they should on a 4K display. Where the game is let down most is the unusual 2D combat system, which doesn't…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay, I get this is an indie game, and I'm all for supporting those. But holy crap... this game could use a polish! The core concept is fine. The actual mechanics... well they promise a lot, but the problem is I couldn't be asked to get to the real meat of it, because of how terrible the dressing of the whole thing gets. I'm guessing the game is Originally in French, because there are just so so so many mistakes in the English translation of it. Both grammatically, spelling wise, and even…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I should re-do this review later when I am less cranky, but in short - Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is a game that really wants to be something else. It did eventually become a comic book, and that's probably fine, but the game part of this game suffers terribly. The combat is muddy, unresponsive and just doesn't feel good to play. Impacts lack weight, the visual effects are pretty but too busy to accurately convey what's going on, and most boss fights consist of you jumping around trying to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-crashed -low fps during cut scenes -weird 2d/3d that kinda kills the game - takes ages to load in and out of combat, even with an SSD +combat
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This kinda reminds me of a mix between Dust: An Elysian Tail and the old Dungeons & Dragons arcade games. The art is nice, the story seems good so far, and the game play isn't bad. The tutorials are a little iffy though, especially when you fail one and the video starts to play again rather than giving you the opportunity to try again and again until you get the button combinations (some of the moves are rather complex and take practice to pull off) down right. The transitions are a bit jumpy…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I was in my last year of college Final Fantasy 10 came out. Everyone loved this game and so one day I decided to play it. I gave up after an hour. Why? Because I had waited probably an hour of cut scenes before I got to anything substantive. I worried that perhaps the rest of the game would be as video and choreographed as it was. And that's the same feeling I get with Aurion. It is a 2-d hack and slash side scroller with a lot of cut scenes and a lot of dialogue. The dialogue…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't follow the story because of broken English and proper nouns with little in the way of context coming at me like bees after kicking a bee hive. On top of that, an on-screen keyboard pops up everytime I accidently push down on the left joystick on my Xbox 360 controller which happens a lot. Load times are longer than they should be for a game like this and it is constantly taking away control from the player. Ultimately, I got frustrated with the combat and quit. I'm not having any fun…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art is good, the animations are sometimes very neat, but overall the game is a mess. The load times are unacceptable and are everywhere, the combat is a total disaster, the in-game tutorial is gibberish, the controls are ridiculous, and the hard drive footprint is beyond the pale. This thing was coded by extreme amateurs. They were going for an A-RPG in the style of the old Tales of Phantasia for Super Famicom/PS1, and clunked it by making the game out of spit and paperclips.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is more or less unspeakable, couldn't bear even a full hour of it. Sure, it draws inspiration from a rarely-used cultures and has some good mood-setting at the beginning, but what follows is a choppy mess of laughably badly made animations (they lack about half the frames needed for fluidity) combined with deeply unsatisfying, chaotic combat that holds no weight to itself and doesn't even have the decency to provide sound cues and feedback. Said combat is made even worse by general…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GameEnthus spoke very highly of this game for quite some time. I decided to buy the game to support the developer. It is very well done. The lore established in the game is a strong tenet of the game. The way the fighting powers work is integral to the lore. It's very deep and canonically strong in that fashion. The combat in the game is superb. It's deep and requires mastery to survive some of the enemies. It's a different type of combo system and should be used moving forward in games…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had this game on my Wishlist for quite some time. But in the end, I played it only for a few minutes before I requested a refund: - The animations are not that good. I saw this in the videos and was willing to put up with it. - I disliked the controls. They felt a bit off. Especially, when some hitboxes didn’t match the things they were meant for. - Storytelling and dialogue feel awkward. I finally quit after I talked to a young girl in the village (at the age of primary school?), who only…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is an action-adventure/beat 'em up. It is not an RPG in any way, shape or form. Level progression and story are linear. While it is possible to return to the previously visited areas, there is no need to do so. Locations and combat arenas are 2D. The combat system is built around Aurions - stances with different movesets and elemental damage. In my experience, it is sufficient to use one or two attacks from the first discovered Aurion (not the starting one) to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The setting is very unique, with a lot of world building. The graphics fit fairly well. The only issue is that sometimes the characters do not quite mesh with the background as well as they should. Gameplay is fairly solid, and combat is well done and responsive. The boss fights can take a while, even once you figure out the strategies needed to defeat it efficiently. it's a side scrolling beat em up .I recommend this game to anyone who love RPG like me to give it a chance and play it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is awesome. There is more to it than I thought, and I'm enjoying the learning curve so far. Music and art is really nice. Combat is fun. An underappreciated hidden gem on Steam.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found this game choppy and poorly optimised. The combat does not feel 'punchy' and responsive.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really cool art style, interesting combat mechanics, and a unique story. Everyone should check this out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Of the ten minutes I played, I'd say about seven or eight were in loading screens.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am sure this could be a very pleasant and fun game, but the awkwardness of the controls (Moving through the opening area was agonizing), the unedited dialogue, and the slow load times even switching one screen over had me frustrated in minutes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally unplayable. Do not buy until developers fix this game - mouse is restricted to a much smaller window than full screen, and only appears on alt-tabbing in and out of the game. Can't reach any option in the main menu, even "settings" to try and fix this. Controller doesn't seem to control the menu by default. Downloaded 13gb and uninstalled immediately. Will try again if devs tighten it up.

I do like the art, the music is alright, and the African theming feels really unique. I just can't get into the fighting system. I don't like combo mashing, and it's just sitting in a spot where I either have to do the combos or it will be too hard, or I need to turn down the difficulty and it will be too dull. I kind of wish it was a beat 'em up, which isn't really fair, but I'm just not able to enjoy this game. Also…

So at first I thought it was going to be a simple, exiled royals gather forces to get their kingdom back storyline. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the most interesting games I've ever played. Not in a "How weird and bizarre" way but in a "I didn't know you could even *do* that!" way. Aurion is Cameroon's first JRPG, and the influences are quite clear. There's a lot of energy from the Tales of... series, as well as from shonen classics like Dragon Ball and Naruto, but all put together in a totally new and unique fashion. For example, you actually play as a husband-and-wife royal asskicking couple on a mystical quest for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is a 2D story driven RPG that has an African setting. The comic book style graphics are nicely done, as are a few of the animations. The fighting system is atrocious and not well thought out. The controls are not as responsive as they should be and at times I had to push a button 2-4 times before it would register. I'm so sick of indie games with crappy controls that basically kill what otherwise could have been a good game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just wasn't fun and engaging. It doesn't do a good job of making me want to play. It loads, then five seconds later it's loading another screen. They talk and talk and talk then it loads some more. The designs are nice, but they move very poorly. I don't have time in my life for this. The design of this world speaks of thought and maybe even passion on the maker's part, but it's an amatuer game. Unless things change significantly past the point I couldn't be bothered.
