What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 178 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (242 of 319 positive).
Some reviewers criticize the removal of English voice acting and censorship. [1][2][3] A few players report that a recent update wiped their save files. [4][5]

Their latest small updated (20/11/25), allegedly to protect users again a Unity vulnerability, also wiped all player's savegames. Some people lost 50 hours, some people less and some more - I've personally lost 26 hours of play, and I don't have what it takes to start it all over and patiently grind through those 26 hours. They effectively ruined the game for me and killed that only run I would had in my lifetime, …

IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?! IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?! IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?! IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?! This is my double-dip for the Steam version. This is my childhood RPG on the GC. Personally, this game and Skies of Arcadia are what made me love RPGs so much. I'm just glad this got a chance to be released outside of GC hell. (Also there's a dub mod for the Switch that works on the PC version)

Owned and completed both of these games on Gamecube (approx 10~12 times for BK1, 2 times for BK2), now revisiting this remaster. Succinct review from someone who has spent maybe about 500~ lifetime hours with these games: It's a deck builder and "card based" battle system but, speaking as someone who normally doesn't enjoy card-based systems, it's straightforward and not a headache to pick up. Battles are on a timer …

I loved the first game on the GameCube, but never got to experience the sequel. After well over a decade, I finally get the chance, and I can't be grateful enough. These are some great RPGs with unique card-based battle systems (each game's battle system is different), great stories with some amazing plot twists, and some of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Now, there is one big problem with this release: the …

I remember playing Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean in my childhood years, the game is so nostalgic to me. It's a beautiful game, amazing backgrounds, illustrations and everything is full voice acted. The gameplay is also very fun, but it involves a bit of practice and tactical thinking to master. I am very much looking forward to play Origins, as I have always wanted to play it, but I could never get hold of the …

The game was generally well received by professional critics. The colorful graphics depict storybook settings teeming with movement, complete with swaying leaves and moving clouds. I felt like a child with a picture book, all of the substance and subtlety falling by the wayside in the face of breathtaking environments, slick character designs, and…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally, the two most innovative JRPGs of the Gamecube era are on Steam! And they're HD remasters? Whoo boy! Let's see.. the graphics are noticeably worse, the voice acting is in mono, the audio mixing is all over the place and the volume generally too low, the new sound effects are much, much worse, the "QoL features" really don't help you at all (except for the much-beloved auto-save), there's not really any settings to speak of, alt-tabbing and/or using the Steam overlay breaks the game,…

neutral · AI labelView post →Censored game, butchered and woke re-translation, English dub removed. Censorship includes, but not limited to: Alcohol, cursing, murder, mildly crude language, and in-game book texts which offend the woke. Basically they not only made some parts woke, but also censored the game for kids, as you would have expected from Nintendo of America in the past. But why? If Bamco was expecting a massive sales boost from the elementary school demographic they sadly failed, since the new censored woke…

neutral · AI labelView post →Loved Baten Kaitos back on the GameCube and was excited to see it on Steam, however the decision to remove English voice acting was a definite turn off, considering it doesn't even make sense considering me opening cinematic is in English!? For anyone interested in the remaster I would say get it but keep in mind you will have to install a mod to return the English voice acting if you are dyslexic like me and are a slow reader. Wouldn't recommend if you are not the type that can't deal with sub…

That just comes off as lazy work man daf***. Really namco you can't even get the dubs in your own game that already exists which you have published ages ago like wow man. That's just sadddddddd

neutral · AI labelView post →If i could give a middle review I would. The game itself looks absolutely fantastic and still feels good to play; by all means it looks graphically way better than the original releases. There are a few things to note. The first is that English VA is completely gone, not even an option, despite the opening video still being in English. There are mods to reinstate the English VA, but that should not be necessary for a game so many reviewers have called "nostalgic," even if I consider the game…

You're always having to download some hotfixes, patches, and all sorts of crap for these "remasters". You'll be much better playing these classic games on emulator.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I see a lot of reviews referring to nostalgia of childhood. Well, in 2004, when Baten Kaitos was released in North America, I was in high school; I guess that’s part of childhood. But I didn’t get to play it back then. I didn’t even have a GameCube. My nostalgia of these games comes from them being the first games I played after breaking up with my ex who took all the video games and consoles we collectively had, in 2012. I sat on a folding chair (because he took the couch) and played them on a…

Finished it 5 times so far (GameCube + Switch) but still had to get it on PC when I realized there is a Steam version as well. Love the music, the story/characters, and the different appearances of the islands. Might be repetitive near the end, but I just love this game. The Great Mizuti approves!

The price point may seem a little high for some but keep in mine it includes two games both will takes you 100+ hours to complete. So lowballing at 200 hrs youre getting roughly 4 hours per dollar spent.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an outstanding game with interesting and unique gameplay mechanics that stand up surprisingly well 15 or so years from its release. Made fresh again with enhanced graphics and sound, the game was absolutely beautiful back on the Gamecube and the new HD visuals certainly aren't no Unreal Engine level beauty but a distinctive and beautiful style that mixes 3D renderings, 2D backgrounds, and animations with brilliant lighting effects. The story is incredible, the graphics are stunning,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As weird and wonderful as ever TL,DR: The Baten Kaitos games are both very interesting and unique 6th gen JRPGs that are well worth your time *if* you're an avid fan of the genre and are willing to overlook some game design quirks (OK, less "quirks" and more just straight-up flaws...) The collection is good and runs fine, but at essentially 50 bucks for two cult classics that are perhaps a bit more "cult" than "classic" it is a touch steep. I absolutely do not regret paying near full-price,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a really mixed game for me. When I first started playing it, I thought it was pretty cool and interesting, but during the first 30-odd hours, I ended up really not liking it and found it hard to keep myself going. The main character you play as isn't very likeable in the beginning, and the card-based combat system was interesting at first, but quickly overstayed its welcome with how tedious it ended up becoming. It just made the combat a lot more RNG-based and made it take a lot…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am biased. Baten Kaitos Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean was the first game I remember purchasing for full price with my own money I had earned from mowing yards back in 2004. :D I bought it entirely based off the cover art knowing absolutely nothing about it. So, it was a big gamble, but man did it pay off. I love these games. The backgrounds/settings are beautiful. The music is beautiful. The story is really good too, and has some major plot twists I did not see coming my first time…

neutral · AI labelView post →Probably one of the best RPG series ever created, Baten Kaitos has always been one of my all time favourite games. I was absolutely thrilled to see it make a comeback in this remaster. Thanks to custom mods that allowed me to play it with English dubs, the experience felt like the perfect wave of nostalgia. The immersive storytelling, unexpected plot twists, countless side quests, humor, and strategy-based gameplay all come together to make this game an ideal escape. I can only hope that one…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Baten Kaitos, the game that launched a thousand mispronunciations, came to the GameCube in the mid-2000s, which despite its rather meagre selection of JRPGs, nonetheless featured a number of titles that, in my opinion, outclassed it thoroughly. I felt at the time that its character interactions paled in comparison to Tales of Symphonia; that it didn't do nearly so much with its islands-in-the-sky setting as Skies of Arcadia Legends; even Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door had better…

Not only just that information should already lead you towards the "buy" button, but also, the soundtrack is absolutely marvelous! The gameplay is also very unique and still hold up today. While the fights are a little slow at the begining and you're wondering why, when you reach end game with the number of attacks you need to block strategically and all, you'll thank the fact it's so slow! All in all, it might be rough to approach this game but, give…

I feel like I am a teenager again experiencing this story. I never did get to play Baten Kaitos II so I will no doubt edit this review when I get to II. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Offensive for an HD remaster. English dub was removed purely so they could censor the text. Button prompts do not update if you rebind anything (I swapped the functions of B and A and prompts do not reflect that). Also the mouse cursor is not automatically hidden when a gamepad input is detected which is a pet peeve of mine in a lot of PC games. These games deserved better. Bandai Namco didn't even give this release any fanfare I don't know what they were even expecting.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unbelievably bad mismanagement of a flawed but incredible game. The publisher literally deleted every single person's saves accidentally, waited a day, and then intentionally did it again. I've requested a refund on every Bandai Namco game I've ever bought and you should too. This is unbelievably bad mismanagement and I encourage Valve to investigate. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been waiting for this day, that Baten Kaitos Origins would be released on Steam. I was hesitant at first as it was only in Japanese audio, but there's a true legend in the discussions that linked to a fix, so that you can use the original English VAs. It's not 100% perfect, but, I'm still loving the game, and the nostalgia is strong.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, it's amazing to see these games available on Steam in 2024. At the time of this review, I've only played the first game. My focus will be on the technical presentation since I haven't progressed far into the game yet and didn't play much of the original on GameCube either. Despite its age, the game has aged beautifully, thanks to its stunning background art and unique world design. The only aspect showing its age is the slow-paced combat, but some quality of life options have…
