Battle Train
Developer Terrible Posture Games, Nerd Ninjas
Battle Train is a deck-building rogue indie game developed by Terrible Posture Games and Nerd Ninjas and published from Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game sets as a chaotic game show where players must build the tracks on the field and ram their trains into their targets, and using the same animation structure as their previous game 3 out of 10. The game was released on June 18, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch and… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 97 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (108 of 124 positive).
Players praise the addictive and fun mix of deckbuilding, strategy, and train track puzzle mechanics. [1][2][3] Some players criticize the story-gated progression and lack of content after the story ends. [4][5][6]

A promising idea that quickly wears out its welcome. The "crazy game show" aesthetic reminds me of Dicey Dungeons, and the animation is done in a Teletoons-looking style. But the story is also a major flaw: the only way to play the true ending is to watch all 50+ cut scenes. Which are way too many for a story this simple (game show is run by crazy guy who's obviously the final boss). This forces players to choose …

Amazing how I managed to spend 36 hours on just the demo! The gameplay is an addictive mix of card roguelike, strategy, and that old Windows pipe connection game - sounds weird but it works perfectly. Now with the full release, I can't wait to explore all the additional content. Definitely recommend!

After a couple of rounds: there's a lot to love about this game and I've only scratched the surface. It feels a lot like Slay the Spire's deck building and card play, but it adds the train map where you have to have rail connections to what you want to attack (enemy outposts) while also trying to prevent the enemy from making connections to your outposts. You also make connections to things to increase the amount of …

Fun game, worth what I paid for it, but also disappointing and falls short on content. Feels like they stopped making new enemies, maps, and other game play elements at some point, and just stuck an artificial grind filler in the game to force you to take longer to get to the end of the game. Loved the demo, and was disappointed to find that the full game had little more to offer than I had already experienced in …

Mechanically very satisfying, and the progression being tied into the story is actually much more naturally integrated than it presents at first. If you're really just trying to blast through runs, you can skip the cutscenes, but there's a lot of good humor in them and I'm glad I let them play out.
Summarised from 34 of the 165 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 13, 2026. How summaries are made
Players who liked Battle Train talk about addictive and fun gameplay loop; those who didn't talk about story-gated progression feels forced. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Battle Train received "mixed or average" reviews based on 7 critic reviews according to review aggregator website Metacritic. 53% of critics recommended Battle Train on OpenCritic. TheGamer gave Battle Train an 2.5 out of 5, praising for the track building as a great roguelike deck-building theme but finds the story uninteresting and the story scenes a slow behind on the progression for the players.

A killer deckbuilding roguelike that plays like a puzzle game. Tactile tile placing hook, deceptive depth, legitimately funny at times. Really good! www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/battl...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →7/10 It's hard to recommend the game and not recommend the game. It's fun and it's a different take on the roguelike deckbuilder, sure it may not have the depth and complexity of the more popular titles in the genre it's different. What makes the game hard to recommend is: 1) there is overarching story, your progress is hardlocked (you can't access the final map) until the you unlocked and reached certain story points in the game through multiple runs, regardless of how well you played or until…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is actually really addicting and fun, I didn't think I would like it much due to the setting but it's charm and characters really turned it around for me. The gameplay seems simple at first but evolves really quickly, on my first run I thought it was too easy at first until suddenly they were throwing things at me I never thought of and before I knew it I could see possibilities that I could implement myself and that was awesome! Great!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The most frustrating thing, that made me write this review is that I have won 3 or 4 runs now, only to be met with a door that stops you from progressing until you've sat through enough of the story. That feels like I'm being punished for being good at the game and just artificially inflating the game length. And that padding is a lot too, I seem to be able to get at best 5% of the required story progression per run, this is a major buzzkill (much MUCH worse than the game being too short) and…

neutral · AI labelView post →Fun concept, but quickly becomes repetitive and boring. It's lacking in content. What's even worse, is that the last (and presumably most difficult) area is locked behind "story progress". You progress the story buy entering story nodes when choosing a path on the overmap. It requires MANY runs to unlock enough story to enter the last campaign area. So, if you find the game too easy already, you have to grind over and over just to make it more difficult? And it's obviously worse by the…

neutral · AI labelView post →i am of two minds about battle train. i REALLY love the concept and gameplay. it is really enjoyable to connect tracks against an opponent and the puzzle solving that comes with it. unfortunately, i would call just about everything else about it half-baked. somehow, it is still really fun in spite of that. i honestly only bought into this game now instead of during a deep sale because i was seeing the low turnout and lukewarm reviews and i wanted to support the team and i knew i'd enjoy playing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very fun puzzle, deck building game. With a charming and fully dubbed story. Game also let you quit and resume from any point in the game, so it is easy to stop at any time. I had extremely fun playing this game and I highly recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disclosure: I received this for free as a playtester. I would purchase it if I could. I've seen this game improve dramatically from its initial concept and am really glad the developers stuck with this to release! This game is addictive in its simplicity, masterful in its complexity. With all Terrible Posture games you expect some signature humor and lightheartedness while maintaining a fun yet challenging gameplay experience. This achieves the same level of success as previous titles such as…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why the hell isn't this game more popular. Story is charming, it's core mechanic of exploding trains on your enemies is great, replayability is also high. Aside from that the art is fun, game is actually designed with love and thought, it is complete and very rich in content for the type of game it is. The only minor thing that gripes me is that it feels a little... clunky - controls, menu transitions etc. are not fast as I would like them to be, but I guess that is the artistic vision of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game. Try the demo and if you like it, its that but more. Are trains cool: Yes Are explosions cool: Yes This game has both in spades. Rogulike deckbuilder where you also get to make trains go choo-choo and make fun paths to get from A to B. Edit: the story was actually really funny. the team did a great job
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It feels like this one's slipped under the radar, so I feel obligated to give it a review after thoroughly enjoying it. Brilliant and refreshing deckbuilder! And as a bonus, the story is genuinely interesting and fun- Aalvado is a great character. If you're looking at the promo art and wondering what the deal is with the cartoon turtle... some? of that is explained, I guess?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game rocks. Perfect mix of strategy and absurdity, but also it's rare these days to see a game with such high quality and plentiful cutscenes. It's surprisingly reminiscent of strategy games of old where you collected cutscenes and cinematics as you progress. It seems the studio has taken a lot of what they learned from their last few games and focused it into a really strong and frankly addicting game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not too easy not too hard. Ai is balanced well without being (rarely) cheap. Frustrating thou when 3/4 thru a run but cant go on on because reasons??? 11,000 out of 12,000 required points? I beat he boss, let me complete the run! Still good game thou!

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to love this game... but it just isn't all that fun, then as if the dev knew that there wasn't enough content and it wasn't that good, they lock gameplay behind a story gate which just forces grinding. I would recommend to the dev that they should spend less time on 'backstage' cut scenes and more time on the gameplay and mini games. Also, instead of cards maybe a 'roll and write' style of gameplay could be fun? Where you customize and upgrade the dice you roll for your…

neutral · AI labelView post →Mixed review honestly, the gameplay loop is fun but its a tad easy and the amount of runs needed to complete the story so you can progress further is wayyyyyy to high, progression system is really killing my motivation to play more, story that's there is cute so far but i dont like how forced it feels
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →really fun game until you finish the story no real sense in grinding for all cards/train parts as most of the time in the store you get the same few parts deffo would benefit with some for of endless mode where you can build your perfect OP train but it was fun for the day or so gameplay i got out of it

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun puzzle game that's unique. On the wokeness scale the character randomizer is very bad. You'll get female names with male voices and character models. Update: After 5 hours I had a run that was doing well enough to progress but because I hadn't unlocked all 52 story cutscenes I can't progress unless I grind a bunch of more runs. This artificial increase in game length plus the mismatched voices of the characters is enough for me to change my review to a negative. The core game is fun…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FUN game but some major design issues. Good first: This game is actually a lot of fun, the puzzle piece design of tracks is an interesting mechanic, and its always satisfying to actually fill up space the most efficient way while also blocking your own stuff while also reaching into enemy territory but not too much at the same time... it offers a lot of really interesting play / counterplay and general strategy. HOWEVER, This game's progression is designed in a way where it feels like it…
