What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 55 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (127 of 178 positive).
Players praise the game's humor, art style, and unique concept. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the combat and mechanics frustrating or lacking depth. [4][5][6] Several players note the game is short and repetitive but still entertaining. [7][8][9]

I was hoping the full game would have any kind of system for this but no. It does not matter how good you are at tactical battles, it does not matter how your cult handles economics, it does not matter if you send 5 groups of beggars at excellent begging and make a net surplus of food when you go out. In the end, at all difficulties, you will run into severe food shortages. Even if you conquer the best producing …

Take Bad North, add tons of humor, personality tests and more management and you have becoming Saint! Cherry on the cake, the game is playing very nicely on steam deck :) I highly recommend this one

If anybody got my back I know the Turks will! Becoming Saint is a neat little strategy game about spreading your cult across a mangled map of Italy. The different paths you can take can be really fun to explore. One issue I have is that combat doesn't feel that great and can be frustrating; units seem to ignore your directions half of the time and it can feel really slow even with a speed up button that admittedly …

Tentative recommendation after beating the game once, with some fairly large caveats. As said by some others, it's very much a "neither recommend nor not-recommend" sort of experience. Becoming Saint (BS) is a simple (not a lot of stats and abilities/modifiers) resource management/real time tactics game where you guide the progression of your character, a future saint (?), in 14th Century Italy, leading a motley …

A very interesting game. Nice art style and music, the presentation is quite charming. One of the great things about indie strategy games is when they can explore innovative new ground and take risks, and this is certainly a game that is offering a unique setting and experience.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The translations are very rough around the edges, and the gameplay has very little long-term depth to it. A run can be completed fully in less than two hours, and the time to 100% is roughly eight hours. Unfortunately Steam does not allow "thumbs sideways" reviews, but only binary yes or no reviews. So while this review is negative, it should be considered as more of a neutral opinion. For the price, it's probably worth it, but don't go into it expecting smashed barriers or major genre…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Becoming Saint is a strategy and tactics game based around the premise of starting a new cult in medieval Italy. You play as a would be cult leader. Struck by divine inspiration, the cult leader sets out across Italy, cultivating a flock of followers, converting cities, and becoming a force to be reckoned with as you reshape Catholicism in your own image. There is a lot here that would make for an excellent strategy game, and indeed, it's a style of game that works well in other contexts. One…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would like to give Become Saint higher praise for its charm but the game's mechanics are too obtuse for me to give it a recommendation. As I played this on the Steam deck (which the game is 'verified' for) I also felt the game needed more polish with how the UI controls on a controller, which added to my frustration with the game. Though I technically won my first playthrough I really had to stumble around until things began to click for me and I wouldn't say that experience was particularly…

neutral · AI labelView post →The combat system is not well explained, but not because the tutorial is not good but because there is no combat system, in fact the moment you enter the combat stage the game suggest to activate the auto battle mode. Apart from the combat phase there is no game, you press a couple of button and that's it. This is not a game, there is nothing as such

neutral · AI labelView post →The game still needs work, pathing is terrible and unit movement is clunky. At certain points I lost battles due to units not taking in the order and standing still while being shot at. I'm also not certain if I'm using the artifacts wrong but their impact is almost negligible, which to me doesn't make much sense, tehre should be a greater impact, considering you don't exactly get showered by it. The critical hits system is... lacking, for lack of a better word. Losing a full unit on a random…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple, but effective While reading this, keep in mind: I bought this game and played for about 6 hours straight on 3 consecutive days, before I managed to put it aside to write this review - I love it! But let's be honest: The choices do not change a whole lot on the surface and the gameplay is repetitive and not the créme de la créme of RTS or economy simulation games, but it has enough of both to be immensely entertaining, especially if you're educated enough to get the social commentary.…

neutral · AI labelView post →Just alright. A fun little game with a shallow amount of viable strategy and not much replay value, instead leaning more towards what simply works and with minimal deviation. Also no way to stop mid-run, which is annoying.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried very hard to understand what in the world is going on in this game, but it's a ton of information overload right from the start, and the combat just does not make a lot of sense. Had to put it on easy mode and auto-battler to make any progress. Very frustrating. It's an okay concept but definitely needs...work.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some battles feel too automated, but the storytelling and faction variety keep it fresh.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Growing up in an Orthodox Eastern‑European family blessed me with two gifts: a permanent sense of unworthiness and the redeeming clarity of martyrdom. So, naturally, I've led a life coloured by a mixture of deep‑seated inferiority and vivid messianic delusions, which soon morphed into a pretty hefty psychotherapy bill. Until I booted up Becoming Saint, that is. From the first screen, I realised that it was possible after all: I could be the saviour I was destined to be; I could finally be…

neutral · AI labelView post →+ The game is original and nice. Wonderful presentation, art and music. + I really love the battle system, it is very interesting wih lots of combos, and the RNG necessary to make it fresh every time. + The politics system is on the spot, also! My major issue with the game, since i really want to spend hours on it, is that: The EASY mode is too easy, with no challenge at all, and boring, I could not lose in any way! The NORMAL mode, is always a defeat in about 7-8 turns in the game,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Accidentally starved my followers trying to be holy. Now they follow a goat. Amazing game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun short game. The choices between the battles are what matters. You must be coherent to attract, retain and grow your followers. And then you get the followers you deserve. The battles can be mostly automated, they are not what the game is about. They will get a repetitive but there's definitely something compelling about this game overall. I'm glad I bought it.

neutral · AI labelView post →The non-autobattler version of this game feels like it doesnt work at all, units don't listen to orders but also dont act on their own. Overall kinda boring and uncompelling. You snowball pretty quickly. Autobattler devolves into you clicking one button over and over in fights and then the rest of the game is managing your food levels. In some ways this is barely a game, in a way that it very much plays itself after a few missions.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah, the tutorial could use a little work, but once things start to click, it’s hard to stop. You just keep wanting to push your luck one more town

neutral · AI labelView post →I like the humor, but the gameplay is kind of simple and very repetitive. After about two hours I feel like I'm already at the point where I've won and just need to grind out a victory, which is not great. Also, there are really annoying delays built into the UI - especially the after-battle screens - that really slow you down for no reason and I don't like wasting that time.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played the demo, liked the mechanics and how the different choices changed your personality type, bought the game, converted about 14 cathedrals (a dew using naked fanatics) and became pope, life is good, made all marriage types and relationships legal, life is good, fed and treated everyone equally, invaded Roma (the strongest city in the game, from what I saw), succeeded, died, had July 23rd honored towards me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Took me 5 Hours to win the game :) Pretty nice game, Very niche, In terms of mechanics it's pretty well done, I'd say the UX(Layout) is kind of confusing at first. The game was exactly as I've expected - Its great on various levels. I feel like the learning curve is great. The items felt a bit useless and I don't seem to recall any tutorial explaining how to gain them. The combat - Sometimes I command the characters to move to a spot and I have a hard time understanding why they aren't…
