What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,220 of 1,487 positive).
Players praise the game itself as a classic, but many criticize the forced Ubisoft launcher and technical issues. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note that the remastered graphics and new content are welcome, though others find the visual changes unappealing. [4][5][6] A few players recommend buying the original version on GOG instead due to problems with this edition. [1][7][8]

Update: as of 02-10-2025 - achievements should... SHOULD be fixed. ubisoft in a nutshell = "if it's not broken, break it." This is NOT a review of the game/original itself that we all love and adore. This is only for this re-release. A year later and nothing has been fixed. - FPS and stuttering issues that require ini file fixes (simple stuff sure, but ffs, all you had to do is add good controller support and HD …

Forced 3rd party launcher and no means to rebind the controls, which make no sense to start with? Ouch. Just go get the GoG version and install the HD resolution mod. The game itself is amazing, just not this version. Sorry Ubisoft, but do better.

Game itself is good, a very nice remaster of an emotional sci-fi zelda-like that is a blast to explore. However, Ubisoft Connect is awful here. Gigantic pop ups for achievments in the middle of the screen, ruining cutscenes all the time. Speaking of achievments, mine bugged out thanks to Uplay: got them on the game, with those horrendous pop ups, but they never unlocked on Steam. I wish there was something other …

This has been my favorite game of all time for many years and I come back to it time and again. I love the story and the soundtrack is awe-inspiring. If you're looking for a game that has rogue journalism, spaceships, aliens committing war crimes, and bittersweet moments, this is a game for you. I thoroughly recommend giving it a try and devoting some time to it.

The game still holds up today. Such a wonderful experience. The HD remaster is a very nice improvement. It’s a perfect game to play in the Steam Deck if you have one!

Critics, per Wikipedia
Prior to its release, Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine and PlayStation Magazine praised Beyond Good & Evil at E3 2003 and described it as one of the best titles on display. Beyond Good & Evil received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. The game's graphics were generally well received. In reviewing the GameCube version, Game Informer wrote that "Every moment of Beyond Good & Evil looks as good as a traditional RPG cutscene" and that the game's effects and character animations were "amazing". On the other hand, Jon Hicks of PC Format wrote that while some effects were excellent, the game's otherwise unspectacular graphics were…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Makes you install the Ubisoft Launcher which is beyond unforgivable. BG&E is one of my favorite games of all time. It looks good, plays just as it did, has new aesthetic outfits & weapons, and what appear to be inserted content regarding the long awaited BG&E2 which make no sense without context and the characters don't comment on in any way. The end boss remains one of the most annoying in gaming history. But he game itself is voiced very well, built great, and does everything.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Never refunded a game so fast, buy the original version and use high-res mods. - Ubisoft connect + constant stuttering on RTX 3060 16GB RAM. - The mix between the new bump-mapped materials and old hand-painted textures looks absolutely terrible. -Lighting has gone to sh*t, contrasts are all over the place, good-bye painterly look. If you're a fan, browse through the bonus gallery and refund the game. No other reason to get this over the OG.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a game that isn't broken, this 20th Anniversary Edition is among the more disappointing re-releases I've had my hands on. The decision to add a layer of realism doesn't mesh with the cartoon-like aesthetic of the (original) game. The hyper detailed textures and tesselated surfaces give off a cheap "Ocarina of Time UE4 remake" look in many instances, and, instead of modernizing the game, oftentimes it reminds me of the Xbox 360 launch title Kameo -- not a compliment, to be clear.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seriously, Ubisoft, you guys suck. Ubisoft Connect is just a total pain. Go to GOG and get the original version: it works perfectly and is way better than this piece of junk. I'm getting a refund and I'm done with Ubisoft; it's no wonder you're slowly going under, given your total contempt for players.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved this game, never going to play it again though because ubisoft, like an increasing amount of game companies, feel the need to force us to use their launcher to play the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: If it remotely looks like something you'd enjoy, it is genuinely an amazing game and my favorite of all time, I would absolutely recommend buying the game even considering my negative review. Game: 100/10 Ubisoft Launcher Required 0/10 This game is legitimately my favorite game ever, it's everything I want in a game, action, drama, stealth, comedy, some guy who just sucks overall, at a bar who you rob blind. I have bought previous versions on Steam, GOG, Original Xbox, the HD one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 20th Anniversary Edition of Beyond Good & Evil undermines the player experience by requiring Ubisoft’s launcher even for offline play in a single-player game—an unnecessary layer of authentication that disrupts accessibility. On top of that, broken Steam achievements frustrate completionists and highlight a lack of quality control. These technical missteps reflect a disregard for user experience and the legacy of the original title.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why do I have to create a Ubisoft account to play an offline single player game on Steam?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, abhorrent remaster. Go play the original version on GOG. I hesitate to call it a 'remaster'. It's just lazily AI upscaled textures with a tacked on side-quest which is basically just an advertisement for BGE2. I'm a die-hard fan of BGE, and the only compliment I can give is for the included behind-the-scenes and concept art.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to start by saying that this is the game of my childhood, so naturally, I value it dearly. However, I'm ashamed that its fate is in the hands of a brain-rotten corp that is Ubisoft. I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hope they go bankrupt. I don't really get the 'let's just AI upscale the textures and ONLY touch the models of the main characters' trend lately, but unsurprisingly Ubisoft is on that train. Don't get me wrong, the game is one of the most unique pieces of work that I got to experience. And the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great game whose experience is ruined by un-disableable Ubisoft Connect notifications during cutscenes. And, as I understand it, they’re embedded at the code level of the game, because even after disabling the Ubisoft launcher process in Task Manager and disabling internet connection they still kept popping up, covering a quarter of the screen. "You completed a daily challenge!" Where? In a remaster of a 20-year-old single-player game? Are you out of your minds? An absolutely cursed…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beyond Good & Evil is a 2003 adventure game from a time when Ubisoft was still making great games. Back when games typically featured stoic meatheads lacking in depth, BG&E took the road less traveled, having players control a charismatic journalist. With its unique cast set against the backdrop of a sinister sci-fi conspiracy, BG&E was a must-play for fans of unique, story-driven games. Unfortunately this 20th Anniversary Edition is lazy. The sharper textures tonally clash with the distinct…

neutral · AI labelView post →Only bought it because two reasons: 1) It was on discount and convenient to run the game with one click. 2) They purposely made the original which I also have in my library, unplayable. With that being said. Game plays nicely, it is convenient, still an underrated gem that it is. What is unacceptable is the fact that they did absolutely NOTHING when it comes to upgrading games capabilities. 2 pics of personal picture space in the camera, close to no settings, graphics looks identical, no…

neutral · AI labelView post →Beyond Good and Evil Anniversary is quite literally almost completely unplayable on AMD devices. There is no actual work around, despite what people say about Steam Overlay. If that works for you, you got lucky, but it's not an actual fix or reliable workaround. Ubisoft customer support employees have also made it clear that the team stopped supporting this edition almost immediately after releasing it and have no intention of fixing the issue. Their advice is to either buy a different system…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is fine, you know what it is. The negative review is for the Ubisoft Connect misery on Linux. I came back to game after two months and now this piece of malware of a launcher just wont run. I could bring it to a white rectangle in Heroic but thats it. You can argue that Linux is not officially supported, but I consider Windows a malware, too, so that is that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buy this on heavy heavy discount or from a keyreseller Pros: New pieces of musical score New cutscenes, cosmetics, and a sidequest, relating to the sequel Lighting Improvements Cons: -AI slop retextures (nice job raising the bar Ubi, this is the quality of your average HD upscale pack on Nexus Mods) -Forced Ubisoft overlay - enjoy getting spammed with XP increases for your Ubisoft account even if the overlay is disabled!) -Achievements are either comepletely pointless and earned…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A distant classic from Rayman's creator, Michel Ancel. I played this game a lot in my childhood, encapsulated in this game's overall atmosphere. Music is good, characters are lovable, and exploration was quite intriguing. When you're playing for the first time, you might get stuck on some puzzles or on how to acquire pearls needed for progression. Despite the old version's charm, which needed some tweaking to work properly on a modern system (and it's a shame Ubisoft pulled it from the…

Unfortunately, it did not sell super well at launch but it grew a huge fanbase over the years, and now that I finally played it, I can understand why! Story On a planet threatened by mysterious alien attacks, you play as Jade, a photojournalist that gets dragged into a conspiracy, that endangers her entire home world, and who else than her could be the right woman for the job!…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition launched without Steam achievements, despite being available via Ubisoft Connect, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S. Then, in mid-2024, Ubisoft patched the Steam version to have Steam achievements, and all was well. Then, inexplicably just weeks/months after patching the game, Steam achievements stopped working. It's been a year now and these achievements continue not to work with no promise of a patch. Bottom line: Don't buy this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →not a fan of the ubisoft bloatware, the lack of steam cloud support, and the lack of an adjustable aspect ratio (2:3 ftw!), but the game has been truly phenomenal so far (about 3 hours in) w/ it's excellent commentary on fascism being a highlight. the remastered graphics are also great unlike remastered nintendo titles

Pros: * One of the first good sneak-based games out there. * Great music, especially for the racing minigames. * More puzzle than action, but lets you fight in most stealth scenes if you really wanna. * Combat is fairly forgiving, in most cases. * I suck at racing games, and can still win the races. You can't skip racing the ship at least a little, though. Cons: * The…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yuckie port. I have the graphical overhead to handle this and whatever the Ubisoft drm/launcher that is forced on you to run this edition of the game is doing, it chokes your system and causes this PS2 game to run really inconsistently. Its a fun little nostalgia piece. If youve never played, its like old tomb raider without the guns meets old zelda without the items. Push blocks. Climb ropes. take pictures of local wildlife. Its got that 2000's platformer humor and isnt a bad time at all.…

It's bad enough I have to download ubisoft connect, and create an account, but then everytime you start the game up it takes a minute to even get going because the loader needs to connect and do whatever it does, like I'm loading up an MMO and not a 20 year old game. Then I can't even turn off the ubisoft connect achievements which are large boxes that take up way too much of the screen and ruin the games immersion. This is poor treatment for a…
