What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 166 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (187 of 335 positive).
Many reviewers criticize the PC port for low-resolution assets, poor controls, and lack of widescreen support. [1][2][3] Some players note the short story mode and limited online co-op, which requires completing missions in single player first. [4][5][6]

Is Code of Princess a good game. Hmm, yes. Is Code of Princess a good PC port? No, hands down no. The game was made for the Nintendo 3DS and the first thing you're going to notice when you start up the game is the big message at the bottom that says "Press F5 to change screen format" or something along the lines. Congrats, you unlocked the second 3DS screen, now a huge eyesore on your one PC screen, and made the …

NOTE TO FUTURE COMPLETIONISTS: THIS GAME REQUIRES ONLINE CO-OP TO 100%, EXPECT TO HAVE TO FORM A PRIVATE LOBBY WITH OTHERS AND PLAY FOR ABOUT 4-6 HOURS TO COMPLETE. This has been an interesting experience, not because I was astounded, but because this is SUCH a mixed bag. It's a 3DS game originally, and this is a PC Port of it. The game itself is alright, it's VERY short at about 3 hours to finish the main story, …

The difficulty with reviewing this game is that I'm also obligated to mention its spiritual predecessor. Guardian Heroes, a cult-classic beatemup released in 1996, is one of my Top 10 Favorite Games of All-Time. Naturally, this should cast a very large shadow on my opinion of Degica's latest release. Is Code of Princess a better game? Is it worse? This is why I've never been a fan of comparison reviews, because they …

With the mixed reviews I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this game but I am VERY happy with my purchase. *While the PC controls are just fine, using a controller with this game gives a much smoother and more comfortable experience. Pros: *nearly every player you encounter is unlockable as a playable character *wonderful stat allocation system and item unlocks to make your version of that character unique to …

Code of Princess is a fun beat 'em up despite it's short story mode & balance problems. You can play through in singleplayer with 1 of 4 unlockable characters that have different moves. Online coop DOESN'T allow you to play through the story mode non-stop. You have to select missions you've already beaten elsewhere one by one & play through them w/o cutscenes. This is the worst problem with the game. The character …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty solid port of Code of Princess. + Nice OST + Fun character designs from Kinu Nishimura of Street Fighter Fame + 60 Fps that rarely drops even with huge mobs. + 720p with multiple screen options. + 50+ Characters. See a sprite? It's probably playable. + Up to four player PvP. + One of the few Beat Em' Ups with online. -/+ Characters seem floaty in the air and hefty on the ground. Can be a turn off for those looking for a faster paced Beat Em' Up -/+ While the roster is huge, only 1/4th…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not sure what people expected, it's a port of a 3DS game. Actually it's one of the better ports I've had the pleasure of playing recently. The game runs fine, a solid 60 fps. I've had no issues with the netcode, online seems decent. Max resolution may be 720p but the game still looks great, I'm not even that turned off by the overly pixelated sprites that obviously weren't originally designed to be viewed at anything above the 3DS' 800x240 top screen. In fact they're kinda giving me a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is a 3DS game so you should expect the resolution and other things not the highest or prettiest but still the game is good and wish to see more from this company on pc
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who grew up in the age of the side scrolling brawlers like Streets of Rage, 42nd Street, and Final Fight, I expected more out of Code of Princess. It's a game that's similar to those in concept, but plays in a much clunkier fashion. Apparently, it's a spiritual successor to Guardian Heroes, which unfortunately I've never heard of outside of the name, but as an old school brawler fan, Code of Princess really doesn't scratch the itch. You can pick from a growing cast of several…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game does not not allow you to customize your keyboard controls and the default setup is awkward to use. I am baffled as to why they thought this would be a good idea, customizable controls have been standard for decades now. Enter and Esc are attack keys for some odd reason, you need to press 1 to quit out or restart a mission. The only way to see the move list is to press F5 to change the screen setup similar to that of a DS (which makes the main screen even smaller) and then you have to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a pretty lazy port of a 3DS game. The resolution doesn't even match, so there is always a border on the sides of the screen. Trying to figure out the controls is a pain, especially if you are trying to use a gamepad instead of keyboard. The worst part is the gaming sprites. Why couldn't they at least add some anti-aliasing? The only thing I liked about the game is the story, which is a pretty typical JRPG story. If for whatever reason you'd want to play a game meant for a portable…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Successor to Guardian Heroes Same Designer and Creators. Online Coop has VS mode and Mission mode. Unfortunately, no Story Coop Mode. Over 40 characters to unlock to fight in Free and Versus Mode Total 4 Heroes to unlock for story mode. TL;DR; This is Streets of Rage fused with RPG elements.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I never got the chance to play Code of Princess on the 3DS, but always wanted to. I was and am very excited for this PC port. The frame-rate stays at a steady 60fps and even though the resolution is 720p it never bothered me since I was having so much with the game-play. You also have the option to have dual-screens with the 3DS menu features. There are so many characters you can unlock and play in co-op mode with friends, but only four of them can be used in the campaign. There is so much…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game. The characters are quirky and likeable. The controls are messy and unintuitive. The AI is a bad joke for all the wrong reasons. It's basically impossible to recover from a combo. There's so much of the game that's flat out luck based thanks to the AI. It's just plain not fun to play.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is not bad, but It should not been port to PC. While I can live with the low resulotion due to the fact that it was a 3DS game. The story is a "meh", nothing really shine, but not enough to consider as "bad" Most characters are lacking the "soul", making it hard to enjoy the story. The game play itself is really dull. The enemy AI is stupid. It's kinda like those mob in Dynasty Warriors. The combo itself is too simple, it only take 2 ~3 try to get the "kill all" combo. Does it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buy this game if you want to deal with: 1) Trolls that can bounce you in the air with laser beam explosions until you die 2) Bosses that can one-shot you and require very careful footwork (but spear users with cheat-level attacks respawn behind you over and over to mess up that said footwork) 3) Epic grinding the same level for hours on end so that you can deal with the above problems. Oh, and if you think that the pixelated version of this game won't be hard enough for you, buy the EX…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't recommend it because of its poor configuration in mp connection. Otherwise it's not bad to get it on sale just for the singleplayer content.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This ones a mixed bag. I really do enjoy the story telling, the mix of hi-res backgrounds with lo-res characters. RPG elements are very well integrated, lovable main characters. Game play is pretty mediocre at best, very sluggish. Not that its a bad game, as a casual gamer i do like easier, but theres almost no challenge with this one. Its almost more of a visual novel with some very easy and simple beat-em-up(button mashing)gameplay. 6/10 for me. Barely a pass for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent game. Steam should have a Neutral rating on these reviews or a 5 point system, The game it's not completly bad, but it's absolutly not innovative in any way. Still I enjoyed and hooked up for 3 days. Then uninstalled. It s a 3DS port and its appreciated, they tweaked some little things to be able to be played on PC, you press f5 to toggle the dual screen from a 3Ds that only shows your stats and combos, could have been easily translated into a sub menu, but well the least they work…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great port that runs well. Pixellated sprites take a bit to get used to, but don't hamper the experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far a very enjoyable game. Animation is completely fluid at 60fps and the graphics very stylish. Lot of fun, too. I would say this is a safe purchase if you're a fan of the genre; 15 bucks is reasonable. Please consider a purchase from these guys so that we can see even more games like this on Steam, and more games from this company. :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite the thumbs down I'm willing to offer a limited recommendation, but with some caveats This is a functional, but apallingly low-effort port of a flawed 3DS game. When I say low effort, I mean there's still a picture of a 3DS in the control menu, there's still split-screen support for the two screen (optional, but why the hell would you want to split the screen in half to show menus on half the screen?), and no widescreen. To say nothing of the dreadfully low-res assets (made worse by the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play Guardian Heroes instead as this one just falls short.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought this game for the COOP play, discovered that you can only actually play coop missions that you have already completed in single player. Brilliant. Not that the idea of being a large breasted scantily clad Princess isn't attractive, but wading through the slow gameplay in this game would be a bit of a trial for me. Each to their own, but it isn't for me. Bottom line: It's not a $15 game and it's not a $30 game for two people to buy and then discover the limited multiplayer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A newer game from the team that brought Guardian Heroes. The depth of character growth means that every point spent in leveling up actually stays with the character and th equipment actually changes how their stats are too. Pretty nice. The game is a port of a Nintendo DS title, so all the graphics are comparitive. Except certain things did get a fresh coat of paint. If only the whole game got a good graphics overhaul or remaster for a PC release. There should be no reason a decent computer…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Give us the EX version you cowards. EDIT: They did it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I LOVE Guardian Heroes, but right out of the gate there was nothing to like about this game. Combat felt clunky, characters and story were not interesting at all, and it's a pretty crappy port (the sprites are a real eyesore). I think "almost naked female lead" was their big selling point and they stopped trying after that. Don't waste your money or time on this. The search for another good beat 'em up continues *sad hulk theme*.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing Zoomies the game with soon to be adopted Courtney. Game wise, I’m bouncing between Bravely Default 2, Super Robot Wars Y and Code of Princess. Played the new Sonic Racing beta and it is much better than I expected. I also find myself holding my breath a lot during online matches. #blutoid
neutral · AI labelView post →Yes, it couldve done some things better and its not as good as Guardian Heroes. So what? If i would compare every game i play to the very best or one of the best games of all time, i could barely play anything at all anymore. Code of Princess gave me a funtime with its competent combat system, nice soundtrack and colorful artstyle. PC Port is also decent and does its job. Only real bad thing, the Localisation is a joke. The mismatch between japanese voices and english subtitles is quite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dull, and boring. Awful resolution for the PC, and just a sloppy game all around. I wanted to play this on the 3DS too, but waited. The combat is janky as hell too. Good thing I got it as a gift, but it's just really not that good.....
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →NOT recommended. Poor port from Nintendo 3DS, with low resolution, no HD. Character graphics are totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and looks like a retro pixel game. 2 languages: Japanese & English, no English voice, only Japanese; the 3DS US version has English voice, hell why not put it in? Funny that it even has a dual screen mode. If you really wanna try, get it on sale. I got it on sale. They should update it to HD(EX) when Code of Princess EX is out on Nintendo Switch.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IMPORTANT: This game requires a resonably good and consistent connection to play online coop. It caused a friend of mine to disconnect anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or so in to a story run. An entertaining little Beat 'Em Up/RPG hybrid with an extremely large roster of playable characters. There are just four in the campaign mode, but it would appear that ANY character in the game is playble in free play, including, funnily enough, incidental nameless NPCs. Given that individual…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I always buy Japanese games with Princess in the title. I regret it. The translation is terrible/padded. They added 3 lines to a character where she basically said "stop talking". The controls are clunky and slow. It feels like I'm playing a second rate PS1 game. Everything feels like I'm in slow motion. Combos are boring and repetitive. The good parts? It has a story arc for each character. The anime cutscenes are nice. The pixel animation is average. If you want a good side-scrolling,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice gameplay, upbeat rythm, nice set of characters...What's not to love ? Note that is recommended to use a controller to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ghost Trick is fantastic. Also, Liberation Maiden was extremely short, but pretty good. The Rub Rabbits and Feel the Magic XY/XX ooze charm, they're great Final Fantasy Theatrhythm is good for short bursts, it's kind of an infinite games Code of Princess is a fairly short Beat'em up / RPG hybrid. I don't remember the full game length, but each stage was short and the game was somewhat short overall.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really really tried to like this game but it is so bloody boring. Every freaking chapter is the same and you do the same moves over and over again my good cant believe it is so boring :/ If you must buy it, buy it when it is on offer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm honestly enjoying this game, so far. I have never played this game's spiritual predecessor, but I can't see how that game being so great means this game isn't fun or can't bve good on its own as its own thing? I love the stat distribution system and the controls aren't much different, to me, than Streets of Rage, and that was like, one of my favorite beat'em ups. I can't give really give too much in the way of like, an actual review, or articulate any constructive criticism very well, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's ok. Really there's not much else to say. It's got a decent fighting system with two attack buttons, some special moves for each character, the ability to guard is nice. The story's pretty simple, but some parts are funny. The problems I had were: stages are two short, often just a small area with 5-6 enemies to beat and a boss to kill. But also there's no difficulty select and the game is WAY too easy. It tells you in the tutorial to play free mode to level your characters if you…

But the time i suffered when playing it was way enough to be able to recognize utter failure and bad game when i see one... Especially when it clearly and openly tries to "copy" a GREAT game. Code Princess is, to make it short, a shameful copy of Guardian Heroes, but without everything that made Guardian Heroes a great game... Hell even nowadays, Guardian Heroes can still compete with Code Princess, even graphically speaking...…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a handheld game, I'd understand why this game would be appealing. As a PC game, this game has a huge lack of depth in gameplay. The bosses in this game easily get stun locked from a simple combo spam. The pace of the game is kinda slow. I think the biggest pet peeve for me is the terrible translations. The necromancer being eccentric turns out to be written as boring and bland through english text. The older brother character who sexually harrasses his sister has his lines completely…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game sucks. There's no real "levels" or zones. Just these 2D scenarios. And the enemies are real generic looking. Combat is simple and boring. I fell for the boob trap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a pretty bad port of a DS game. I got the game after I picked up Blade Strangers, because I wanted to know some of the characters. The game would be enjoyable if only it had some tiny tweaks that showed the developers cared about it. You have no way of knowing your character's combos outside of trial and error, because the combos are meant to be displayed "In the bottom screen". That is, the bottom screen of the DS. They did not create an alternative to look them up. Many characters of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Huge fan of Guardian Heroes, and this game falls quite short of that. The gameplay graphics are not great and the animations are really subpar. The moves are too watered down and the staging of the game also. All the equipment is just tedios as well. That being said, the story and characters are enjoyable, although the English translation takes a few more liberties than seem necessary. It is nice that everything is fully voice acted. Overall, the game itself still isn't particularly fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fairly trimmed down gameplay compared to Guardian Heroes, but a fun and gratifying experience. Good Directinput support. Music is basically non-existent and the rendered graphics are unfortunate, but the animation and character designs are quite good, anyway. Writing is pretty clever as well.
