Developer Claymore Game Studios
Commandos: Origins is a real-time tactics video game, developed by Claymore Game Studios and published by Kalypso Media for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows. A fifth installment in the Commandos series, the game acts as a prequel to Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (1998) by telling the story about the formation of the Commandos team, and their work during the war between 1940 and 1942. Many players feel it's a worthy return to form that captures the classic Commandos feel. [1][2][3][4] Some reviewers note it lacks features from Commandos 2, like looting and open buildings. [5][6][7][8] Several players compare it unfavorably to Mimimi Games titles, citing jank and bugs. [9][10][11][12]

This is a Commandos game in name only. Whilst I appreciate the brand being rejuvenated after all these years, it's clear the developers took their inspiration from Mimimi Games titles rather than the very series this prequel-type story was built on. Firstly, the visuals are somewhat okay, but pale severely in comparison to the utterly staggering pre-rendered backdrops we saw in Commandos 2. There is just a distinct …

Commandos Origins is a great strategy game. It is structured like the classic first three installments. The player commands a small squad, each member has special abilities. While in the first installments it was a good idea to lure enemies into a safe ambush with one character, this time the new command mode allows you to eliminate groups of enemies with your squad simultaneously. It is also nearly the same …

A proper return to form for the Commandos franchise, which has been dead for far too long - and perhaps the best game since Commandos 2: Men of Courage - if not on par. Just needs Mateo Pascual's soundtrack, and then it'd be perfect! A lot of the negative reviews seem to be from around the time the game itself launched, and more or less focus on bugs. Coming into it now, it feels like a very polished experience and …

You know what, as a Mimimi games fan, I almost gave up on this game on like the second level because it felt too precise (frustrating), and too janky. While it is definitely janky and there are plenty of bugs/QOL issues, this is a great game! The character movement takes some getting used to and the gameplay isn't as flexible as Shadow Gambit etc - can't throw bodies off any surface etc, missions sometimes just end …

As a fan of the original games, I was excited for this one, and it didn't disappoint. It feels just like Behind Enemy Lines but with modern controls. The Pros: Gameplay: It captures that classic Commandos vibe perfectly. The tactical stealth gameplay is spot on. Mission Variety: The missions take you to a variety of very well-designed locations that are rich in detail. Characters: The cast is well-presented, and I …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received "mixed or average reviews", according to review aggregator website Metacritic. In Japan, four critics from Famitsu gave the game a total score of 30 out of 40. Luke Reilly from IGN felt that the game managed to strike "a great balance between the classic stealth tactics games and modern streamlined ideas", and added that maps and objectives in the game provided ample opportunities for creative eliminations, and players must plan their moves carefully in order to succeed. Sam Chandler from Shacknews called the game an "exceptional revival" of the franchise. He praised the levels in the game for their diversity and their sandbox-like design, adding that the game "does a…

Shadow Gambit Speaking of my favourite games from last year, I still can't recommend Shadow Gambit highly enough and deserved so much better, a stealthy strategy murder-puzzle in the vein of the old Commandos/Desperados games with an undead pirate crew. store.steampowered.com/app/1545560/...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is 50% off right now which I think is a historic low, and it is criminally underrated, deserved way better. A Stealth/Strategy game in the vein of Commandos but with undead pirates and a more open ended mission structure store.steampowered.com/app/1545560/...

It's hideously undersold but every bit as gorgeous and detailed and DRIPPING with religious animosity as you'd expect from the team.

neutral · AI labelView post →We just published Sumerian Six (sumeriansix.com), a WW2 stealth/tactics game that carries the torch for classics like Commandos. With that in mind, I designed the manual to look like something you'd find in a '90s big box PC game.
neutral · AI labelView post →I find this game super irritating compared to any Mimimi games (or even some imitators, like War Mongrels). Maybe I will change my mind, but this is what bothers me after 3 missions (probably around 20-25% of the game): - You can't jump off the ledge. - You can't throw bodies off the ledge. - Germans tend to "jump off" right before you kill them with the melee attack. Super annoying, like they have some inhuman reflexes compared to our supposedly well trained commandos. - Pistol does not kill…

Visuals and sound design 👌🏻 There's also a great story here. A Flawless masterpiece because I literally can't think of any. 10/10. A lovely surprise. 🥹

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was playing The Stone of Madness on stream tonight, and it's very neat so far, 2D isometric stealth game along the lines of Commandos but with a sanity system and a hand drawn art style about inmates escaping a secret monastery/sanitarium, and it has a demo! store.steampowered.com/app/1309710/...
neutral · AI labelView post →I realize that comparing this game to Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun, Desperados 3, and Shadow Gambit Cursed Crew is a bit unfair, but the comparison kept coming up in my mind as controls, UI, and gameplay elements are just the worse forms of those in the aforementioned mimimi games. It is in my opinion held back by needing to be a remake while the mimimi games were spiritual sequels and could therefore innovate and improve. The price is too steep for me to recommend it unless you have…

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun With this game, developer Mimimi singlehandedly resurrected the stealth strategy genre that started with the likes of Commandos and Desperados, and it's every bit the successor to that legacy you could ever desire, nobody did it quite like them. Play it!
neutral · AI labelView post →28. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun Developers Mimimi did something incredible with this and brought a whole subgenre back to life; real-time stealth tactics as pioneered by the Commandos series. It's seriously worth your time if you like stealth games and an incredible gem at such a discount.

neutral · AI labelView post →Big fan of the original commandos. I appreciate that this game is trying to harken back more to the original Commandos than Commandos 2. Commandos 2 is the fan favourite so I can see how that would be upsetting to a lot of people. If you're expecting a lot of Commandos 2 mechanics here, you will be disappointed. It's clear the influence this game has from Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3 and wisely takes a lot of cues from those games. They are responsible for the revival of the genre and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stone of Madness is basically Thief meets Commandos. If you like games where mistakes aren't instant game overs, but instead create emergent scenarios where you have to improvise, you'll love this one. And it's dirt cheap right now. store.steampowered.com/app/1309710/...
neutral · AI labelView post →There's the best deal yet on Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew + DLC. Probably the best stealth-tactics game (Commandos, Desperados, etc) of its kind. There may not be another like it, as the studio disbanded immediately after release. Really fun Ghost Pirates versus Magic-Hating Inquisitors setting.
neutral · AI labelView post →tl;dr Is the game fun, a solid title in the tactical RTS genre, a fun, awesome comeback of Commandos series? It sure is. But dang as both fan of the genre and Commandos series I cannot give it a thumbs up and must express some tough love in the review. It's a solid game, I legit love it but unfortunately it's plagued by annoying bugs, on top of it feeling missing a ton of side content among other things. Buy it on high discount if you like the genre. Now, if you played Shadow Tactics you're…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One game I'm quite keen to go back and play is Prisoner of War. A WWII themed stealth game that feels part Bully, part Commandos. Frustrating in places, but with lots of sleuthing, basically.
neutral · AI labelView post →Personally, I remember - and can reliably quote - every word uttered in in the PC strategy game Commandos Behind Enemy Lines and will often say to myself “finally, some action!” In a very bad cockney accent
neutral · AI labelView post →It definitely exceeded my expectations, though there’s still room for improvement. I feel some classic interaction elements are missing — like checking boxes, drawers, or enemy equipment/uniforms. One feature I really miss is the ability to hold enemies at gunpoint and force interaction, something I remember from earlier titles like Commandos 2. That said, there’s still a lot to appreciate — the executions, visuals, and variety of maps are all well done. Overall, I really enjoyed the game…

It was adapted from a game that had no interiors (Shadow Tactics, all their new games are based on that), to a game with multilevel interiors, making interior navigation quite bad. Yeah, it is true it wasn't that good in the previous games, but more than 20 years have passed since the release of those games. One would expect some kind of improvement. neutral · AI labelView post →I'm disappointed. Deeply disappointed. Commandos: Origins may have evolved graphically compared to its predecessors, but in terms of gameplay, it's a significant step backwards, especially when compared to the newer Desperados games or Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, for example. Decent attempt to revive the series BUT : First of all: Get Shadow Tactics or Desperados 3 if you haven't before this, way superior games in this genre. Controls are wonky, game stutters, basic soldier animations look like the game is still WIP. It has promise and I love the series but this is not it. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →> could have been a cool turn based JPRG Yall know that ‘Fallout’ was originally turn-based? No need for anything Japanese in there, the RPG system was pretty good. The nineties had some cool turn-based tactics games, like the ‘Jagged Alliance’ series, ‘X-Com’, ‘Incubation’. Even realtime tactics were very nice in the isometric view, e.g. in ‘Commandos’. Now that everything needs to be in either first-person or third-person from behind, such games rarely pop up.
neutral · AI labelView post →So the game is full bugs. I can't finish Operation Reckoning on stealth. There is a lever on the fourth floor that doesn't do anything, the only way to open is by force. The guards after a while they just start walking up and down very sudden. My spy all of the sudden loses soldier uniform (no, he was not detected). Somewhat solution for few bugs is that you completly exit and start again, but then a game for 50 euros, just not worth it. Wait for a discount for 10 eur or less.
