What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 181 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (856 of 981 positive).
Players praise it as a faithful homage to classic Contra games. [1][2][3] Some find it too short and overpriced for the content. [4][5][6] Multiplayer bugs and lack of online co-op are noted issues. [7][8][9]

The game is fun and plays well, but it's not worth the $40 price tag. There isn't enough content to demand that price. It feels very much like an arcade game, but that also means there just isn't very much depth.

**Recommended** Contra: Operation Galuga is what happens when your childhood memories of Contra hit the gym, chug three energy drinks, and start bench-pressing explosions. I booted it up expecting a nice nostalgic run-and-gun experience. Instead, I got: * missiles * lasers * alien horrors * enough bullets to violate several international treaties * and a soundtrack that makes me want to invade my own living room …

CONTRA IS BACK, BABY! When I saw this game drop back in 2024 my jaw hit the floor, a new Contra game? a GOOD new Contra game?! this must be a dream! but nope! its real, and it is AWESOME! Operation Galuga is a modern reimagining of the classic Contra games, taking some scenes and inspiration from Contra, Super C and Contra III on SNES and turning it all up to 11 with new crisp HD graphics and a banging soundtrack! …

This is an AWESOME Contra game. Basically Contra 1, Contra 3, Contra Hard Corps Reboot, Remix and Remake all-in-one, with a whatever-story and the inclusion of a bunch of characters and throwbacks to all of these. It's definitely still its own thing though, not a copy-paste job. But instead of being about 30 minutes long, its about 3-6 hours on a first playthrough and 1-1.5 hours on repeat playthroughs with upgrades …

Contra Operation Galuga is a true hommage to the earlier Contra games. After 100% the Contra Collection, i thought it was time for Galuga. The levels, the bosses.. such an amazing detail. With some of the min-bosses from older games, to complete new bosses. Together with challenges, speedrun mode and for the true diehards an insane difficulty mode. This game had me entertained for 28 hours till 100% achievement. I …

85% of the 181 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Contra: Operation Galuga. The complaint that keeps coming up: too short for the $40 price tag. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

It takes a couple of hours to complete but it has some replayability value. Grab it on sale (about 10 - 15 usd would be a fair price) if you like arcade games. 2 As a Contra fan: 6.5 of 10. Wait, what? well, I think this Contra fails short for a Contra game made with modern resources. Either this was made as a mobile game or they aimed for a low budget development expecting big profits…

There is no way to remove the keyboard player. Playing Co-Op in Story mode is also a problem because it defaults player 2 to the keyboard, however you can try the steps below as a work around. "Try this: Instead of Story mode, go into Arcade Mode. For whatever reason it forces the remote player into P3 slot, but that's fine. Both of you select your characters…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Contra,- like many of the other legendary classics- was a big part of my childhood. The reason for this thumbsdown review is NOT because this isn't what an updated modern Contra should be, but solely for 2 reasons. 1) The eye strain is real in this game. In this modern version of contra, there is way, way too many harsh flashes going on in the game. Additionally, the stage with the reflective prisms as neat as a concept as they are for the game, strained the eyes quite a bit. 2) They…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, it reminds me of happy moments when I was young. However, it does have some flaw settings, more like a bug I think. If you die near the deadly green water (or liquid) in the final stage, you will be reset to a location "deep in the water". Because the green water is rising fast in order to catch the player, the reset location just cannot provide sufficient time to get out of water before invincible time is out. Then it took another life for this stupid reason, then repeats…

neutral · AI labelView post →If you approach it as "I'm going to play a new version of the original Contra games for the NES and SNES" it does its job perfectly. If you approach it expecting a modern gaming experience with a multitude of complex mechanics and a deep story you're going to be sorely disappointed. It's just a prettier version of the OG games with a less punishing difficulty and a simple story slapped on top that somewhat fleshes out the original game's barely-there plot but remains pretty basic. I liked…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game despite finding the trailer for this game to be highly underwhelming...that is until i played the actual game and realised how boring and bland it actually was...the graphics for the price point are bad...the soundtrack is bland and generic sounding...gameplay is just bad like plain bad...sigh i just wish Konami would release Hard Corps Uprising and Shattered Soldier someday...steer clear if you're a Contra fan.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Who would have thought, an actually decent Contra game. As good as this is, this is honestly still really jank, not particularly pleasing to look at or even very long. I'd suggest waiting for a discount if you're the mood for some Contra and then having a few hours of fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr: This is a 7/10 game. For the most part, it feels like an attempt at evolving the Contra formula we know and love, but instead it adds bloat, a story you're forced to play through to unlock goodies, worse music, worse levels (and honestly, just worse game design as a whole) and mishmashed art. Not recommended because I'd rather just play classic Contra, but this game isn't bad. Starting with the art: The character sprites aren't badly done per se, but they do NOT fit the aesthetic of…
