What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 117 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (314 of 382 positive).
Players praise the game's massive scale, with unit counts reaching over 24,000. [1][2][3] Some reviewers warn that the expansion is obsolete due to a superior standalone version. [4][5][6] Several players report compatibility issues on modern operating systems. [7][8][9]

An expansion for Cossacks: European Wars that becomes immediately irrelevant because Cossacks: Back to War includes the content from both of the games. Get Cossacks: Back to War instead. This is a waste of money.

Lovingly detailed sprite based RTS. I've had populations of over 24,000 units (villagers in mines included) on my side alone on a huge skirmish map with 6 other computer controlled players. You must farm or fish (food), chop wood, quarry stone, mine coal, Iron and gold to supply your army. I love this game and will die playing this game. Easily my favorite RTS of all time. Its cheap no reason not to add it to your …

A classic RTS, its major distinction being the nearly unattainable 8000 unit capacity. Map options are quite versatile, as are the nations to choose from. The one downside is that MOD1, which brings many imporvements, is unavailabe for the Steam version. Nevertheless, Cossacks is an excellent game.

I have played this game times in the past, even played it on Windows 7, but since I have updated to Windows 8.1 the message advises not to run the game because of resolution issues and there is no way, that I can find to correct this issue.

neutral · AI labelView post →I have fond memories of this game so I'm probably pretty biased. But it's definitely one of my favorite RTS games of all time. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got the Perry Cossacks based up, really like how they look with the snow. They’ll be used in the Pazoot skirmish game 1812 the retreat from Moscow.
neutral · AI labelView post →I remember this was the first RTS I played (a long time ago) and even though it has simple graphics and gameplay I still find it very fun. But this game is pretty difficult and its different than most RTS games and time is of the essence and you have to be on top of everything from mining to building troops to farming from beggining to end and if you don't quite simply your gonna lose. I sometimes find myself building up a huge army and getting ready to invade the enemy but forgetting to make…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you ever feel like you should control an army? Would you like each soldier to keep track of how many enemies they kill? Well you better be able to pay them! This is Cossacks a no nonsense RTS for those who like an indepth game but still casual capable. Game play wise this is easy to pick up if you ever played the AoE series or Rise of Nations. Excpet you only live in the 17th and 18th C. Build a town or more, control citizens and put them to work, build army, build defences, build navy, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Releasing new content for the Witcher 3 out of context truly is a statement I respect. I had a lot of issues with story tropes in the game, as I have with the book and also Cyberpunk. Still I found parts of W3 revolutionary back then, and played 400 hours being my favorite part the Cossacks DLC.
neutral · AI labelView post →Get Cossacks: Back to War (which is stand-alone that was multiplayer-only with some more nations) along with DLC that includes campaigns both from original European Wars and expansion Art of War and you will have a complete package on a slightly better working engine. There are some exclusive stand-alone singleplayer missions that aren't part of campaigns on both sides, I think, but eh. And I guess you won't have intro movie which doesn't work anyway, peek at it on YouTube. Though Back to War,…

neutral · AI labelView post →And we really ask for help in the fundraising for 6 Schmidt & Bender scopes, so Ukrainian nationalism, which so outrages some game commentators, remains not only in the form of matches, but above all in our people, our Cossacks, who carry the Ukrainian spirit and culture of our people. 3/5

positive · AI labelView post →A game of Napoleon's Battles (Avalon Hill) with French, Baden, Austrians, Cossacks and British?! against Prussians. All we've got is a fast play sheet and the French statistics to go from - the game box is lost somewhere in the loft maybe.
neutral · AI labelView post →Don't you even think about purchasing this one. If you wanna feel the best Cossacks 1 experience — just buy Cossacks: Back to War. It's the best expansion for European Wars, and much better than Art of War, which is an expansion too. In general: many bugs, little missions, and zero fun.

neutral · AI labelView post →"Cossacks: Art of War" is an ancient game from 2001. It's a whopping 23 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. Before we get…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →thing. Fighting, crafty, adaptable and commited Ukrainian Cossacks is a completely other ball game. In a way, the soul of the Cossacks should be our main war aim. 3. The redemption arc The history of the Cossacks has dark pages indeed. Few darker than those written in the 20th century. But

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Never played any Cossacks game actually! Kinda missed them in my being bad at RTSes phase. Love the concept of zones of danger for early modern infantry tho.
neutral · AI labelView post →🖥️ Cossacks: European Wars (2000) This is a must play for any classic RTS fan. Fondly remembered game in Europe, probably less so in the US. At the time, it was groundbreaking due to the sheer number of possible units on the map - you started small, but longer games would end up with huge armies.
positive · AI labelView post →This is the best strategy game for old people like me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very relaxing and, most importantly, quite light game (about 0.5 GB).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i can't change speed of LAN game! Units moving too fast. It's unplayeble speed for lan game! if you r playing singleplayer its possible to adjust a speed, but the game closes suddenly at any time without any errors ((((((((
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is nowhere near the quality of AoE or AoE2, sadly it's missing something that would keep me playing and returning. Strange balance with enemies being able to take over your buildings and enslave your units so quickly. Huge numbers as far as resource quantities, which makes no sense, just use smaller number, as the overall balance is really weird. It's not a bad game, it's just very mediocre and has no longevity for me. Got bored after 15 minutes.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an old game and a simple format - easy to play but with a challenge. You get to build towns, armies etc, defend them and attack your enemies. Graphically it could be better but later in this series they did make the graphics better but it was more difficult to play and to build armies and weapons etc. The pace of Art of War, for the most part allows the player the time to prepare for war. ts a great way to pass the time without being frantic.
