What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 326 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (145,040 of 156,899 positive).
Players widely praise the game as a timeless masterpiece with brilliant level design and satisfying combat. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note flaws like janky platforming, frustrating areas, and a steep price for the remaster. [4][5] A few players report issues with hackers ruining saves and the lack of cloud save syncing. [6]

Flawed masterpiece but really should have been a free upgrade for those who owned Prepare To Die Edition (the original PC port). $40 price tag for this game is quite steep too due to this game's age. ADDITIONALLY- The game falls off a bit after beating Smough and Ornstein. You're gonna do quite a lot of running and backtracking even after you gain the ability to warp. That's why I call it a flawed masterpiece. Edit: …

You Died: Remastered Hard? Yes. Frustrating? Sometimes. Unfair? Never. Worth it? Without a doubt. Dark Souls is truly the Dark Souls of Dark Souls.

Ok so Dark Souls is genuinely one of the best games ever made and I will die on this hill. It's brutal yeah but like, in a fair way? You never feel cheated, you feel stupid, which is different lol. The world is insanely well connected and exploring it feels so good once it starts clicking in your head. Bosses will destroy you. Like, dozens of attempts, no shame. But when you finally get it?? Nothing hits like that. …

A timeless masterpiece To those interested in souls games, this is the purest souls experience Playing this game evokes an indescribable feeling recreated by no other title

Basically this is one of the best games ever made, it's so good that it created a genre of it's own. Excellent level design, iconic areas, weighty and satisfying combat and so many different ways to build your character. People are still finding interesting builds to use now even after all this time. It isn't perfect, fine movement on platforms is busted, i really hate the tomb of the giants and the bed of chaos …

90% of the 326 Steam reviewers we collected recommend DARK SOULS™: REMASTERED. The complaint that keeps coming up: janky platforming and some frustrating areas like Blighttown. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Dark Souls received positive reviews from critics upon its release. One of the reviewers for Dark Souls described it as "a very hardcore dark-fantasy [role-playing game]" that is "role-playing right down to the roots", and stated that the "massive field map and powerful enemies serve to rev up both your sense of adventure and your sense of dread." Another reviewer said that "the sheer happiness you get after the trial-and-error pays off and you overcome the challenge is absolutely impossible to replicate." GameSpot praised the online system and the sense of jubilation when conquering boss fights after numerous failed attempts. They also suggested that casual gamers may struggle to progress,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was 2025 and for the first time in my life I decided to play Dark Souls. I have come to this great land to find out what's going on and why people love it so much. And instead I found my very own sun. This game taught me a lot. It showed me that not everything unknown is truly frightening. It showed me how frustration can become my greatest enemy, and that only trying, moving forward and refusing to give up brings real progress. Special thanks to Andre and Laurentius for keeping me…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dark Souls Remastered — The Anime Was Never Going To Save You 9/10 I've played enough Dark Souls to know two things: This game is incredible. The fanbase will defend absolutely anything by saying "it's intentional." Dark Souls Remastered is still one of the greatest action RPGs ever made, but it is not flawless. Put the nostalgia goggles away. Lordran The world design is still amazing. Firelink Shrine, Undead Burg, the Parish, the Depths, Blighttown, Sen's Fortress, Anor…

It’s buggy, it’s unfinished, it’s story is unique and fantastic and holds a valuable lesson, but I’m not a video essayist on YouTube. I won’t tell you to buy it. If you do, it’s an experience of a lifetime. And it is well worth your hard earned pound sterling. Do it for the Sunbro
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is something about this game that keeps you wanting to go back. It's really smartly designed. In a way, it's both simple and complex, it's vague and dark, but when you beat it, you realize it was so clear and bright. The story is amazing, leaves a lot to think about, without being flooded with tons of cinematics and dialogue. On cinematics, it has one of the best opening cinematic ever, so badass. I found an upscaled version of it on YT I watch it from time to time The way New Game…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First playthrough I "used" my 1st firekeeper soul, missed Havel's Ring, let Lautrec betray me, accidently hit the sun guy then proceeded to accidently kill him, got my revenge and then handed in the firekeepers soul to upgrade my flask, hit new game + after the final boss and missed all the DLC. Great time

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dark Souls Remastered is easily one of the most unforgettable gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Everything about this game feels carefully crafted, from the haunting atmosphere to the incredible sense of discovery that comes with exploring its world. The OST is absolutely phenomenal. Most of the time the world is quiet, which makes the moments when the music finally appears during boss fights feel incredibly powerful. The orchestral tracks give every major encounter a legendary feeling, like…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Dark Souls many many years ago on my PS3. At that moment I found it too hard and frustrating, but I still managed to beat it. This time I also took a deeper look into the lore and read on the side, the story of Sif and Artorias, Queelag and her sister, the even darker story of the depths and the undead parish, the age of fire and dark, and many more all damn well worth a good time to read. Playing it again after that much time you realize the game is not hard but punishes impatience…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm 60 years old. I don't care for FPS games. Don't like action games. Really don't like dying and having to replay sections of games. Had heard of Dark Souls. It was never for me. Then I watched Ellen's Dark Souls academy with Luke from Outside Xbox. She not only made it look fun... she made it look 'easy'. So after watching about a dozen episodes I bought the game and went back to the start of her series and began to play along side her, simply following her footsteps. I now…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Returned to it after about roughly 14 years, it's still amazing. You know what's to be expected from the series by now but the game takes time to adjust if going from Elden Ring or the faster paced souls-like. Dark Souls has a slightly slower paced combat style. Everything feels weighty and it can be both incredibly janky and difficult. There's many cons to things like: Bonfire placements, CERTAIN locations (blight town still lives up to it's name), the lack of teleporting system until…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Walk the path of your ancestors. The First Flame dies, and duty demands a sacrifice. Cast yourself into the embers, burn as kindling, and keep the Age of Fire alive. Arguably one of the best games I’ve ever played. It changes you as a person and teaches you about life.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hackers will break your game when you're 50 hours in by killing all the NPCs. Do not recommend in its current state.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is good. The only complain, or rather, misfortune, is that I'm a bit pissed of the fact that my first playthrough of it was "remastered". Oh well, should have been a Certified Rollslop Enjoyer way earlier, my loss. P.S. Did you see the key prices for Prepare to Die? Holy sh¡t, I guess next time I better just buy PS3.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't even remember when I bought Dark Souls 1, but I know it's been a few years. I was always put off by the gameplay, which is outdated despite being a remaster (Titanite Demon hitboxes, getting hit through walls, sometimes crazy runbacks), but just like with The Witcher 1, you just have to grit your teeth and give it time. Your head gets used to it, and suddenly you're playing one of the best games ever. 10 out of 10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, after all these years, Dark Souls: The First is the best Souls they've ever made. Having played every single Souls games, Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring, I can say that although they've streamlined and improved many ideas with subsequent games, they've never managed to capture the lightning in a bottle that is Dark Souls again. The main two things that make this game truly great for me are the level design and progression. No Souls game comes close to how actually cool the Dark…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is great, but it’s so damn hard to figure out where to go. How the heck was I supposed to know that after arriving at the Firelink Shrine you’re supposed to turn right and go to the graveyard instead of going up the stairs?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dark Souls is one of those games that manages to make you hate it and love it at the same time. The first few hours were basically me getting destroyed by everything that moved, learning the hard way where not to go, and slowly figuring out how the game actually wants me to play. What I really like is how the world feels connected. You start recognizing places, shortcuts and enemies, and suddenly a place that felt impossible becomes familiar. Every little shortcut feels like an actual reward.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dark Souls makes you feel your progress. By the end, it’s not that the enemies got easier, but that you’ve gotten better. The world is built with smart, interconnected level design that leads to satisfying moments of realization as areas loop back and connect in unexpected ways. It rewards game knowledge, and on replay, you’ll fly through parts that once seemed impossible. It’s challenging, but every success feels genuinely earned. Absolutely would recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's the kind of game where a normal person would say, 'Why am I doing this torture to myself?' and uninstall it within the first hour. Light the bonfire, we still have a long way to go to die! Praise the Sun!

I didnt want to give this game a thumbs up or down, this review was merely to express that I feel this is a well-made game built around a philosophy I don’t personally enjoy. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dark Souls – My Journey to 100% Completion After around 90 hours of playtime, I finally managed to 100% complete Dark Souls and earn every single achievement. It wasn’t just a challenge of skill — it was an emotional journey full of pain and sorrow. Not the pain of the gameplay… but the pain of the story. From the very beginning, when our first savior — the one who gave us hope and freed us from the Asylum — eventually went hollow, and there was nothing we could do to save him… To watching…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A chosen undead is rekindled once more... now with more frames and worse lighting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2eos3V7jTI Only way to engage in the multiplayer aspect though so REMASTER has its place. At least the changes are not on the scale as the Demon Souls 'remaster' which is another can of worms.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wouldn't run well on Linux (pretty sure that's all Nvidia's fault) So I put windows back on my computer because this game is that important to me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games that I feel everyone should play at least once. That being said, after ripping off the rose-tinted glasses glued to everyone's face following this game's legacy it's full of jank and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ moments. It's glaringly obvious where the game had its corners cut/ areas that feel that they were never finished. People who talk about "enemy spam" in later games clearly never got to the Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith where the enemies are shamelessly copy pasted, as if people…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You will never go on a journey like the journey you go on in Dark Souls. This is a game where a normal undead nobody goes on the quest to kill the gods themselves (or what's left of them) driven by nothing but the will to not let their fire flicker out. In the opinion of someone who has played every Dark Souls game multiple times and even Elden Ring, this is the best souls game, and the one I consider the most replayable. I mean my hours speak for themselves.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is so good, it ALMOST makes me want to try Dark Souls 2. 8.5/10 because I was fighting the camera a lot during boss fights.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perfect game to play around the time when you have exams, or any other stressful situation that you might find yourself in, really. Angry that your studies are going wrong? Upset that your friends are ignoring you? Feeling like nothing else matters? Here's a boss you will attempt 46 times and that has a ridiculous runback, that should demonstrate you how much easier you have it than the chosen undead and maybe it will encourage you to get off the computer and do something that will benefit…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game will at times be unfair and frustrating, making you feel despair, rage, and elation. It's not usually the style of game that I play or enjoy...but these are some of the reasons why it might be worth your time to play it. 1. The challenge. You can be level 100 and still get killed by the starting game enemies. This game will humble you and teach you to never take lightly any enemy great or small. You might have a boss down to 1HP and think you can just phone it in and take him…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game if you like exploration. The world building is amazing. I really like grim vibes and art direction. A lot of variety in scenery and enemy designs, tons of equipment to choose from. I love the fact that as you walk or run the levels are loading seamlessly without any loading screens. Adds a lot to immersion. The gameplay is clunky, but serviceable. Some of the late game areas are obviously unfinished and poorly made. I hate how kick is implemented in this game. Maybe it's a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you come to this game AFTER Elden Ring, at first you might think its a tad... clunky. Dont! Its a fantastic game, and , yeah, it might be just a bit dated, but its fantastic nonetheless. I kinda noticed it the first few hours, but that melted away pretty quick. Also, if you at all consider yourself down with Souls games, you HAFTA play this!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do not like how this game looks. There are some aspects of the visual design that I prefer to the original (AOE effects, magic effects, lava, etc.), but I still think PTDE is vastly superior with regard to aesthetics. Dark Souls 1 is in my top 5 favorite games of all time, and I think they have done a huge disservice to the game's legacy by making PTDE unavailable for purchase and instead only offering this half-baked remaster. At least it isn't as bad as what they did to Demon's Souls.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Don't you dare go hollow." - this is a real one people. Simple Zelda combat + the world of Berserk + 3D Ninja Gaiden enemy behavior albeit at 60% game speed + old school game design without handholding = trendsetter. This does nothing innovative, except for the Estus flask mechanic, creative use of bonfire, and the implementation of async multiplayer. However, S-tier level design, oppressive atmosphere with impeccable art design, superb level variety, deep lore, and memorable bosses make this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's dark souls there is something that wasn't said 100 times? a true flawed masterpiece worth dusting off years and years later and to recommend to new players. the only 2 things i can personally add are: - this game is great but it's showing his age gotta keep that in mind. - for the achievement hunters out there a little tip for knight's honor! pick/farm/buy as much you can in your first run it's easier and you can get almost everything in your first playthrough.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Elden Ring was my first ever Fromsoft game, and I LOVE IT! It immediately became my favorite game and as of writing this I have over 350 hours on it. I figured if I loved the game so much, I'd go back to where the series started (Demon Souls doesn't exist) and I adore this game. The two keep their fundamental gameplay mechanics the same, but the world building is so different. I love the looping aspect of this game so much and I think it handles fast travel better than any other game I've…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perfect for masochists like me, i recommend, you will cry while playing the game because it's peak and challenging, for the first 30 hours on this game i didn't know how to run nor jump, and that's because i played the game with keyboard, and i loved it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got 100% a while back, and damn it was fun. If you played DS3 or Elden Ring, this game is more slow paced and outdated. Which make it hard to get into if you played any of the two before. However, once you get put the effort and if it clicks with you, is pretty enjoyable. The DLC is already included, so you won´t miss anything and last time I did it early this year, I didn´t have problem doing most of the bosses solo after some tries. The good things? -This game haves the bases of every Dark…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What can I say about Dark Souls that others haven't already said? Nothing really. What I will say though is that I raged when I died against hard bosses after multiple attempts, I celebrated when I defeated them, I explored everything Lordran had to offer, I engaged in jolly cooperation, but most importantly I enjoyed my time with Dark Souls. In short I got gud
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I definitely wouldn't say this game is for everyone. Dark Souls isn't very intuitive, especially when you're playing it for the first time. You need patience with basically everything, especially the bosses, because you're going to die. A lot. And then die some more. For a first playthrough, I'd honestly recommend using a guide from time to time. It makes the game much easier to understand and saves you from wandering around completely lost wondering what the hell you're supposed to do…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too much has been said about this game. I'm just adding to the positive review count. I recommend playing it with friends through... A certain coop mod you should google... Shhh... You didn't hear it from me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A landmark game that holds up incredibly well. The interconnected world design is genius and the sense of discovery you get when just exploring is great. Punishing but incredibly rewarding. The remaster is a solid way to experience one of the greatest games ever made.
