Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 190 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (683 of 733 positive).
Players praise the game's humor and art style, comparing it to Monkey Island 3. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note that puzzles can be illogical or frustrating. [4][5][6] The game is recommended for fans of classic point-and-click adventures. [1][2][7]

Game became a chore rather than an enjoyable experience. The puzzles lacked logic and there was too much useless dialogue.

BottomLine at the Top: A delightful P&C adventure that takes inspiration from Monkey Island 3. Highly recommended to p&c fans! Pros ------------------------------------- -Started right up no setup nonsense. -High production value with polished animations, backgrounds, professional music, and an intuitive interface. -Decent voice acting with good quality recordings -Object interactivity highlight function …

This is a somewhat qualified recommendation. The artstyle and sound are nice and hearken back to the golden age of point and click games, and there is a streak of humour running through the whole game that is good. Unfortunately there are some quality control issues with the spelling in dialogues and some backgrounds "tearing" in places but the main negative is that it also suffers from the curse of classic point …

A fun lighthearted point & click adventure. I really enjoyed this point & click. If you're a fan of the Monkey Island series I highly recommend giving this one a go. The charming art, pleasant upbeat island music and quirky humor draw a lot of similarities between the two. Puzzles were not too challenging. When I first found this game I immediately thought of Monkey Island 3. The drawing style is very similar, so is the music, and also the interaction menu ("look at" "talk to" "take"). Monkey Island 3 is my favourite Monkey Island, and one of the best point-and-click adventure games. Best one is of course The Longest Journey, but it's not the same category (whacky adventure games). TLJ is lot more serious. This game …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An average point and click with a good amount of humor and 4th wall breaking. The direction is decent but the production could have used some more polish. There were also a few minor yet noticeable typos throughout. There are 6 save slots but the game only autosaves in one and there is no manual save. There is also no chapter selection after finishing the game so if you missed something or want to replay a section, you have to start from the beginning. Additional Details…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whilst this game is OK in a lot of ways, and whilst the devs certainly deserve a lot of credit for how they've copied some very key components from The Curse of monkey Island, the game still misses the mark unfortunately. Two things stop it from going from average to good. Firstly, the puzzles lack both imagination and trailing. A lot of the puzzles I solved I did so because they just seemed the obvious thing to do, not because the game provided me with much motivation to do these things. It…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're into mixing completely random items and no sense to what your mission is, this game is for you. I love p&c games, but this was exhausting
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You basically walk around aimlessy the entire game, just dragging your items on people, or random objects hoping they progress the game since there is no rhyme or reason behind almost all of the puzzles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wouldn't have bought it from the graphics alone, but I got it as a part of a bundle. Sadly, the non-uniform style, the slightly off proportions and obvious pixel error in the background are a good indicator for the overall quality. Point and click adventures either need good story and characters or great puzzles. Here, we have neither. The plot makes Cid come from nowhere and doing things because they are "Evil" - mostly big talk and the common petty theft and bodily harm all these…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is over. Finally. Honestly, I didn't like the game. I can see that great effort has been put into it (nice locations, interesting characters, lots of dialogues) but still, I was tired of the game. Maybe, the reason is that I didn't sympathize with Cid and I didn't quite appreciate his sense of humour, or maybe it was because I had to go from one location to another again and again. I had to use the walkthrough guide because sometimes I felt stuck not knowing what to do next but thanks to the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a meh option. It has a bit of charm and made me smile a little at times but it seemed so... by the numbers and the infamous "point and click adventure puzzle logic BS" reared its ugly head a bit too many times for my liking. Also the main character seemed sorta... flat and the overall game just sorta felt that way as well, flat and basic. Also art direction seemed to be all over the place (I also saw a few instances of background texture shift like the image didn't load…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game took far too long to find it's own tone and humor; the first half felt like a cheap Monkey Island knockoff. There is charm there and inventiveness, but by the time it really shows up, the game is nearly over.

Imagine my look on my face... ♥ Other than that it's pretty OK, the only annoying thing is that when you click on the hotspot you got ALL 3 options available to you interact/examine/TalkTo and that does not mean you can do either of them that's a confusing bummer for the game. And main actor's voice is meh (for English), jokes are fine but voice cannot express it in a fun way.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Darkestville Castle is a very solid point&click adventure game with full voice-over, lots of puzzles, many locations, and a playtime of around 10 hours. The Story Cid, the demon of Darkestville just wants to work a bit on his to-do list of evil deeds, when his arch-nemesis Dan Teapot locks him into his castle. As if that wasn't enough hassle, three demon hunters arrive in Darkestville, and that isn't even the worst news of the day for Cid. Cid is your classic anti-hero, always a sarcastic…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's the first time that a game brings back some memories about the Grinch or any kind of animation from Pixar, DreamWorks... To start with, this is another point and click game with some good graphics (not like the HD animation we find these days, but one with a good quality that feels like it was drawn by hand) which has an adventure story full of puzzles, funny interactions between characters like a short animated movie and it's definitely sure that you won't get bored. I really want to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice point-and-click game. The main character is an "evil" Demon, which is a bit different from the typical "good guy" approach. Very good hand-drawn backgrounds and plenty of humor. Puzzles are mostly in the form of finding and sometimes combining items in order to advance the story. A few of these were hard enough to require referring to a walkthrough, but not too many. There is a button to highlight the interactive items in a scene, which does come in handy. Recommended for P&C fans, 7/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not get it when you have a Mac. The game runs, but there are technical problems. These problems are things like oversized mouse cursors that cover up text and important dialogs. This makes the game not very enjoyable to play on a Mac. Unfortunately their technical support seems to be unresponsive. On Windows it runs fine. So get it when you plan to use Windows, but not for Mac.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just recently reviewed the point-and-click game The Wardrobe and don't want to have to rewrite a lot of the same details for Darkestville Castle, so the short version is that I prefer the puzzle design to be logical first and foremost for these types of games. While this game definitely has a few confusing puzzles, it's overall a lot more manageable and understandable. When a character needs something, they'll say it. And usually you'll find out that another character has it and wants…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent classic point and click adventure game. Comparable to the Monkey Island series, with a bit simpler graphics and humor, but a great story, characters and music. Highly recommended. :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow, this was hard to give it a thumbs up or down, but overall it's more on the negative side for me. Let's start with what i liked - the graphics are nice, animations are smooth, voice acting is OK, the main character is annoying, but likeable and some of the jokes are funny and the story is - while very cliché - OK. Let's see the problems from smaller to bigger ones: - music - a lot of Monkey Island rip-off. It runs even when there's a loud radio in the scene, so you have the game music, the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Funny so far! XD However, I have a wish to be implemented in the settings. I have normal sight, but it is hard to read thin font texts with very little contrast. Please add this function, then I can continue and enjoy the game more. Because of this, I give 3/5 stars, because this setting should be easy to implement.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →good story, funny, good graphics, good voice acting, everything's good except 1 thing: it uses autos ave so if you want to go back you have to start from the beginning.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a fun game with charming graphics, nice voice-acting and it's style reminded me a lot of Monkey Island 3 (the end even of Monkey Island 2 too), but I would only buy it when it's on sale because it's not really the biggest game. The puzzles are easy to solve for but some of them are still challenging and I did enjoy the game-humor too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super fun! Reminded me of the old Monkey Island games a little, perhaps because the music was nostalgic and the art style was reminiscent of CoMI. Weird puzzles that were not always intuitive made for a great adventure game. I thought it was funny, the plot was unique, and the characters were interesting. Nice medium length, not too short or long. Definitely recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you like Monkey Island? You'll love this. Just buy it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's funny game with pretty, 2D graphics [in few places parts weren't aligned but it didn't spoil the game], good voice acting and music. Riddles weren't too hard or too easy and achievments were hardly missable [I missed one in Chapter 2 and that's why I have so many hours in that game]. It's nice game for one afternoon. If You want some quick amusment, try Cat Mode, but You can't switch it off once the game started, so MEOW!.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Secret of Monkey Island meets The Nightmare Before Christmas. Solid little adventure game with some nice spooky humor, decent voice acting, and groovy music. Only downsides are some stiff animation and a couple wacky 'moon logic' puzzles. Hopefully Cid the Demon will grace us with another EEEEVIL adventure.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Darkestville Castle, for the most part is a fun and entertaining game to play that will likely appeal to most point & click fans. If puzzles in Adventure games usually put you off this one doesn't actually have puzzles and the story is moderately interesting. The graphics were actually a big draw for me. Their quirky cartoonish style seemed reminiscent of some of my favorite P&C Adventure games like Monkey Island. I also enjoyed the use of stained glass windows to tell portions of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic Point & Click Adventure Really enjoying this point and click adventure, with brilliant voice acting and a very funny story line up to the point I have played. Not far into this one as yet but I will certainly play this one through to the end as I normally do with PNC games. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pure point and click adventure game. You play a demon and first you fool demon hunters, then you help them. End of story. Fun game, dark humor all around, good music, fun characters to interact with. Devs added 40-ish achievements so lots to find and do ! A must have for any adventure game player.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR Darkestville Castle is a solid, albeit short and relatively easy, 2D point-and-click adventure game in the style of the 90's classics like Day of the Tentacle and Curse of Monkey Island. Smooth gameplay and lots of campy humor provide a nice "in-between" snack for fans of the genre, although at full price, roughly 7-8 hours of gameplay and little replay value might be too little value-for-money for some. Summary The game puts you in the shoes of Cid, the demon of Darkestville, on a quest…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →boring and tropey
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would recommend using with walkthrough, some achievments get soft locked
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great Point 'n Click Adventure that definetly deserves more recognition. It has his own sense of humor - special but entertaining and charming nontheless. Is it a Classic PnC Adventure like Deponia, Day of the Tentacle or Edna/Harvey? By no means. But it is still worth a shot. The Humor is supposed to be obvious and the main Charakter is supposed to be unhelpful, so you are forced to combine things randomly to progress.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Note: Some of the puzzles are in this hard style. I need to occasionally look up a guide. Steam Deck Compatibility: Verified Story: Cid, the main character, is a mischief making devil that who lived in Darkestville (Since, he was a baby). All was going fine, until, Dan Teapot, called a bunch of exorcists to come over. Review: Technically, I feel right at home with 'Darketville Castle', since it reminds me too much of 'Curse Of Monkey Island', down to the music, art style, and humor. I highly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid game, I can't really say anything bad about it and it is probably the most underrated point and click games I have played. I have pretty much never seen it recommended or as part of top point and click lists. I randomly picked it up in a bundle with having never heard of it before. It has a very Monkey Island style flow and has a lot of Monkey Island style humor. There is a bit of moon logic, but generally the puzzles are pretty fair. Most of the puzzles will click if you examine the…

neutral · AI labelView post →the humor was dumb. only played it because people said it was like the monkey island series but... i would not compare them. yes, the gameplay is similar (puzzles, inventory, click and point) but the story line and puzzles of monkey island is what made it a cult classic. this game just felt immature the entire time with extremely dated humor (early 2010s). the reason why monkey island is a game you can go back to is because the humor (for... at least 60% of the time) is timeless. you wouldn't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Darkestville Castle is a surprisingly good Point and Click Adventure game with good visuals and quite a funny narrative. It reminds me strongly of the Sierra Adventure games back in the 90's. The characters are memorable and the voice acting is great. Even though the game doesn't have a lot of areas, it will still take a good 6 to 7 hours to complete the game. I got all 44 achievements on my first walkthrough. I believe most of them are unmissable but I had to keep referring to the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's extremely humorous, and I adore the main character Cid. The other characters art is very very jarring at times too see as it looks extremely out of place. Some had shading, different line art (Very thick lines vs thin),some didn't have any. ETc. The background work is amazing and the voices as well. The puzzles were just the right amount of difficult. It's a cute game, totally recommend, I got this on sale. I love the references they put in there and the humor is great. The game only…
