Deathtrap
Developer NeocoreGames
Deathtrap is a tower defense/action RPG video game released in 2015 by NeocoreGames for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It shares the gothic fiction setting with NeocoreGames' The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and features a lone protagonist who is sent to a border world in an alternate dimension ("Ink") to defend a series of ancient strongholds against a horde of monsters invading from the depths of that… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 180 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,915 of 2,284 positive).
Players praise the unique blend of ARPG and tower defense gameplay. [1][2][3] Several players note the game's difficulty spikes and bugged achievements. [4][5][6]

Do NOT buy anything from NeoCore games. They've shown to be a shady dev that will revoke legitimately purchased keys out of spite and then lying about why they did so. They claim it's for "privacy issues" yet didn't bother to revoke keys until a couple of years after. So the dev is a thief and a liar. Hopefully they're out of the industry soon enough.

9.5/10 coop, 7.5/10 solo. I've many hours played outside of Steam as well. Fantastic tower defense & action RPG hybrid that allows you to customize your experience by focusing on towers ("traps"), or your hero, or both. There are really fun possibilities like tanking or freezing enemies on top of ground traps or creating synergies between your traps and hero skills. Better with coop as many maps are easier with 2 …

Never thought I'd enjoy a tower defense much but this is a holy union of ARPG and TD that just works very well. Its a shame theres not a sequel or more games like it!

A magnificent blend of diablo style rpg elements and tower defense. Similar to games like sanctum, but with more in depth character development part that includes talent trees for both traps and your character, crafting, equipping, shopping, co-op and more. I wish i knew the game was this good when it released so i could have supported it back then. Fills me with sadness that due to its niche nature it was dropped …
Summarised from 34 of the 254 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
81% of the 180 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Deathtrap. The complaint that keeps coming up: difficulty spikes become frustrating. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Some reviewers have noted close similarity of the action aspect to Diablo series of games, and that the tower defense aspect likewise doesn't introduce anything significant compared to existing such games, but the genre mix was considered innovative and refreshing. The game has received generally favourable reviews and has a metascore of 77 on Metacritic (PC version).

Pacific Drive reviews hate the "unreasonable" save system... but the game saves as you enter each map on your roguelite run...?
positive · AI labelView post →We didn't often get nice things in game cases when it came to PAL PS1 games, but Deathtrap Dungeon is one of the exceptions. Not only do you get a manual but there is also a wonderfully illustrated bestiary for all the foes and beasties in the game. Might be 'The Knackerer' causing the pain xD

I fully endorsed it because I don't have time to video game so when I game a bit, it has to be good! Get it and then play with your friends! It also has a bear. Mark of a good game.
positive · AI labelView post →A friend has just reminded us that in 1998 Eidos hired Kelly Brook to promote the Playstation adaptation of Deathtrap Dungeon, and you will have to google that for yourself, didn't help the game from not sucking if I remember correctly but still absolutely peak late 90s UK there
negative · AI labelView post →I am annoyed that @orcsmustdie.com Deathtrap has launched to mixed reviews on Steam, and that a bunch of the reviews are from people that have played less than an hour. IT'S THE BEST OMD GAME! HOW CAN THESE GAMERS BE SO WRONG?! Anyway, I left a positive review. You nerds should too. Cus it's great.

neutral · AI labelView post →Great / fun game starting out but the mid levels scale to extremely difficult to near impossible very quickly with too many restrictions, limited traps and resources. After spending many hours leveling up with different character classes, the difficulty becomes utterly rediculous far too soon to where it is no longer enjoyable.

neutral · AI labelView post →Tried Deathtrap Dungeon briefly. It plays like a clunkier Tomb Raider, or Dragon's Lair if it was an actual video game, but I have a soft-spot for these slow methodical platformers where your character is extremely fragile. Based on a series of books by GW founder Ian Livingstone.

It's an enjoyable little zombie twin-stick shooter / bullet hell game. Another decent one is [Deathtrap](https://store.steampowered.com/app/310510/Deathtrap/). It's a tower defense game with a gothic/dark soulsy aesthetic.
