What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (6,396 of 6,875 positive).
Players praise the Lovecraftian horror, anime art, and TTRPG-inspired gameplay. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the English translation is poor and needs improvement. [4][5][6] Some players find the game's potential held back by translation and AI voice issues. [6][7][8]

I feel so bad about having to mark this one as "Not recommended", but the lack of translation polish (after the devs said they retranslated the entire 1st chapter) and the use of AI-generated assets are too much. To elaborate on my experience with the game: - The game came out with very bad English translation. This itself was not an issue, as the devs promised to fix said translation ASAP. The June 5th fix came …

How can i say this.. lovecraftian - check cute girls - check eldritch horror - check fun - check interesting story - check TTRPG themed - check buy the damn game.

Fantastic game with a lot of potential, but it's being held back by lackluster english translation. Even while browsing the characters inventory you can find untranslated segments. The game still offers a lot of enjoyment and fun, exploring each story and achieving different endings is addicting, but talking with other characters (which in my opinion is one of the most important aspects) is often dragged down by …

Okay, I'll admit that the translation/localization is rough at times and takes some interpretation, BUT the story, aesthetics, systems, and gameplay are Amazing. If you like lovecraftian horror with a side of anime and emotional storytelling, then this JRPG is for you!

Lovely Lovecraft glides in on anime‑style illustrations that shimmer like lantern light, yet every tumble of the dice releases a hushed, cosmic dread.

82% of the 179 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Depersonalization. The complaint that keeps coming up: poor English translation with untranslated segments. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh dang, I didn't notice the news until now, but Depersonalization - a big Chinese indie hybrid RPG based on tabletop Call of Cthulhu - got its english translation overhaul a couple weeks back. I'd been holding off on playing it because I'd heard the initial translation was pretty wonky.
neutral · AI labelView post →I wish I never bought it on the idea the English translation would be improved at some point. Its a bunch of Lovecraftian horror mysteries so the dialog is very important for setting mood/tone. The potential is great but at this point it's been years and its still horrible. The developers aren't taking the English community seriously at all (releasing new modules in only some languages taking months for machine translated slop). I absolutely cannot recommend buying this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I refunded due to poor machine translation and AI voiceovers. I tried turning the voiceovers off entirely, but that did not help. However, I'll keep this on my wishlist, as it does seem like a genuinely interesting game. If the game gets properly localised, either by a professional team or by its playerbase, and the AI voiceovers can actually be turned off, I will give it another try. And in that case, I'll amend my review as well. Hopefully the devs keep on keeping on and turn this thing…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the art and the ideas this game has, but currently it feels too poorly translated and too janky. It's close to greatness, but I found the graphics to be too glitchy, and the UI to be a little on the ugly side. I think this is a rough diamond that just needs a bit more work and it will be a cult classic.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This has the potential to be the best Call of Cthulhu tabletop adaptation... ... and then it fills its game with AI slop. I don't want a chat GPT talk to Yog-Sothoth, I don't want AI generated 'voices' which sound awful. Big shame. Would not recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Until the english translation is done, i cannot recommend it, entirely machine translated with no comb over to make sure it actually makes sense
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's story heavy game with bad english translation. i couldn't force myself to play it, still waiting for good english translation
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After getting a retranslation for the main modules I can fully recommend this fantastic game, wish I knew chinese so I could jump into the community made modules and other mods, but hopefully with the creation tools getting translated and guides coming its way, hopefully more community creations will keep this game alive for a long time
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →roll dice! panic! re-roll dice! panic harder! realize you truly ARE a prisoner of fate! eta- the english translation is really not *that* bad
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The translation is just... not very good. It was enough to make me drop the game very quickly. I haven't checked for translation patches online, but it's not something I'd be willing to go through to play this game. Besides that, the graphics and gameplay are charming but it's hard to understand what's happening which is a really bad thing for a story heavy game so I'd say stay away.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its like a TTRPG but when you are about to do something really dumb there is no DM saying "are you sure?".
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is some scuffed stuff and mistranslations (press cancel when asked to skip the prologue!), but after the tutorial it doesnt hold your hand and there is a lot of freedom but it's not hard to learn. It's a roguelite similar to darkest dungeon, as in you make/delete a character and enter various Stories/levels, which could lead to a good or bad ending, and when you return to the library you have to heal your character, improve them, and they' ll keep(not the item) what was gained during the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had high hopes for this game back in early access, Sure the translation was a little rough but the content was there and enjoyable and the devs seemed quite passionate. Sadly, however, after coming so far it seems the devs seem to only support the Chinese community having crowdfunding campaigns, a modding tutorial, as well as modding contests with winners being permanently immortalized into the game all of which being broadcasted in english. Imagine getting a newsletter directed to you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is pretty good if you like games like disco elysium youll probably like it but I cant recommend it for a simple reason and thats that this game should still be in early access its not translated to well and that wouldnt be a problem if the story wasnt incredibly confusing everytime these characters say anything I feel like i got hit with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ beam because im not understanding ♥♥♥♥ and not only that but there are numerous sections of the game that arent even translated into english yet…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like it but the translation is too poor for me to be able to make sense. I cannot recommend this game until the developer improve the translation. might refund the game and wait for better translation update. for now I will give it more try.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The English Translation is bad and sounds weird even in the tutorial and beginning cant recommend like that, also only seems to have ai voiceover or nothing thats also a minus.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is honestly a great game with deep lore that is being held back by a lack of a solid explanation of the mechanics, as well as translation issues. Before getting in, loading into the game often takes a close down and reopening, as it likes to get stuck loading the first time in. The prologue plays out great and gives good guidance into what you should expect going forward; multiple choices that can both positively and negatively effect the rest of the run for that story, side missions that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cannot recommend this game in this state of release; Upon first launch, it had long load times, the english translation's quality doesn't seem to have been fixed from comments I've seen from back when the game was still in early access; that lack of quality directly affects how the tutorial is experienced as well, and to top it off, it uses weird, robotic audio lines for only some of the dialogue which I am not entirely sure isnt AI. It is better off without any VA if this is an indication of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought this game because of the Lovecraft themed style, and I wasn't displeased. Normally I don't really play RPG-Maker Like games (I know it uses Unity), but I was intrigued about the story to be told. Now that I have most achievements and played all endings in each module, I think I can give somewhat feedback: First the cons: Game may get laggy after too many saves. Can be especially seen in the newest module. While playing it for the first time, there is a tendency to save…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really nice storytelling. Tag choices matter really fits this game since the stories, their development and endings depend on your actions and the results are not just "victory" or "game over" as in most cases, but are actually different successful endings with different rewards on completion.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why did I buy this? I was deceived by it's similarities to Library of Ruina and the lovecraftian lore, but this game is badly written (and translated), the developer is updating the translation really slow (do they even?) and gameplay and story feel so random. Tried to like it, but it's really meh.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bad translation, what can I say?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mostly unknown due to a wonky translation, Depersonalization is a Chinese indie RPG/Creation Kit based heavily on tabletop Call Of Cthulhu. Scenarios can range from full campaigns to 'one-shot' highly branching adventures across eras, genres, etc, and you can carry your characters between scenarios
neutral · AI labelView post →Please buy this game, even if its not your style, this is clearly a labor of love that deserves your support. The devs are great and its clear how much they love and want to improve this project, im not one to review too many games, but if you ever have a couple of extra bucks, please use it on this game, maybe buy it for some friends, in this day and age of greedy companies a labor of love like this game restores a bit of hope for the industry as a whole
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this, but for now, I just can't. This game's voice, audio and the Engrish just killed any sort of immersion I would have had for it. Hopefully it gets fixed in the future, but for now, I'm refunding it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not fully translated and there are only 7 stories to play through. It's relying on ChatGPT to answer user questions and the thing is broken and can't answer you anyways regardless of whether or not the answer it gives is even correct. The devs are also relying on customers to create more story content which is never a good thing and at the time of writing 100% of the currently available workshop content is untranslated.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing pixel art, compelling stories and charming characters. While the English translation's quality can sometimes feel amateur-ish, it's wholly complete, and I felt like it was enough to enjoy and understand the modules. A lot of replayability to obtain different endings, items, partners and lore.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Watched a review, then watched a friend play and played a demo before playing here and the game is pretty great. HIGHLY recommend. It really captures the feel of the Mythos(except for some mythos entities being personified in humanish forms). Its also a pretty good Pulp Cthulhu game, generally with a decent number of modules to play with tons of endings and branching narratives to explore. very cool hub area with lore-integrated character creation and such. You can definitely still feel where…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is certainly one of a kind, in a good way. I was a bit unsure before I purchased the game, since some reviews were so hard on the translation, and while it is not the kind of translation you might be used to from bigger games, it's not that bad. Most of the translated parts are perfectly fine, but sometimes you might stumble on some untranslated dialogue, which can be a bit frustrating. Though this can be solved through image translation tools rather quickly and isn't more than…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this game has a ton of potential Right now it mostly needs a more professional quality translation, but once that is done I can see this game becoming something really special The ability for community made content to become full official content allows for some huge community impact
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →extremely fun game that needs quite the overhaul on the translation. can get by with what's there kinda, but it's far from acceptable. reminds me of sword art online: hollow fragment's original vita release
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are going to have voices, especially ai voices, dont just voice part of the text, voice all of it, this is peak laziness its literally copy paste
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My friend bought it for me in Early Access (thank you!) and I've never regretted the investment they made. I have almost 50 hours at the time of this review (and I probably will have more by the time you read this), and this game is just sooooo up my shtick. I know, everyone complains about the translation, but it IS still under work and the devs are very responsive to the discord reports. If you want to wait, wait, but don't bomb them with a negative review over this. (They have no…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really really really bad translation. Avoid like the plague
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a really good lovecraft rpg game. Theres 2 things this game does realy good: 1) The game is divided into modules the only thing that carrys inbetween are your investigators and companions you unlocked from the modules. Inbetween the modules you can have your characters do a variety of events to heal hp, sanity or improve stats; each having their own risks and oportunities. This essentialy makes a realy good base to make a lot of diffrent and immersive campaigns. 2) This feels like a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is as close as it can get to playing a tabletop Cthulhu RPG (TTRPG), based on Chaosium's Basic Role-Playing/RuneQuest system. You have several modules where each module is a complete independent case/adventure. You create your investigator(s) and send him to the modules. You can use the same investigator or different ones for each module. You can unlock companions in each module and add them to your team in any other module. There is character progression for the main investigator and his…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Machine translation past the prologue isn’t too bad, though if you do want to mod the game all the major ones are Chinese exclusive save for one Would recommend even without mods, the lovecraftian aspect is 100% the best part
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game needs tremendous amount of work. I usually do not post a review with 30 minutes gameplay. But, 30 minutes have shown me enough incompetence and how sloppy the devs were. I am going to bash it mercilessly. I have been wanting to buy this game for quite sometimes. But, the reviews made me want to reconsider. The main problem this game has is the English translation and my God, this is bad. I will say the translation was done very sloppily. For example, they repeated the same sentence…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Eldritch Horrors beyond my comprehension and anime
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd love a better English translation, but I also like the story and combat is okay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Key Overall Very charming Tabletop role-playing game. While playing I could tell this is a passion work, very detailed and excellent pacing of diversified self contained stories with interesting casts. This is especially true after finishing Cursenday's Dark Carnival where it's literally feeling like playing JRPG with a lot of casts, intertwined fates between people and detail to the on going event even a NPC that makes it feels alive and several story branches. Combined with an appealing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Adventure/RPG game that desperately needs translation. from what little wasn't ruined with bad AI voice overs and awkward gameplay and no explanation on what to do, there's so many unique mechanics and branching stories here. buy on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cant fairly recommend this until an official PROPER english translation gets implemented... Artstyle and gameplay looks and feels alright but is brought down by the previously mentioned dialogue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+ Anime aesthetic + Lovecraftian horror themes + Tabletop RPG elements Honestly just checks all the boxes of what I like in a game. Some issues with (possibly specific to Linux / Steam Deck): - Controls are a bit buggy both with controller and with keyboard+mouse (sometimes clicking does not work, sometimes keyboard/controller selection does not work, have to alternate between both constantly) - Running on anything other than Proton experimental seems to lead to infinite loading screen -…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Came from another Library, good game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really great game when you figure out how it works. It's module based branching narratives where the characters can be exported from one to the next. Can't redo a module with the same character but rolling up a new one is really easy and you can choose to give them much of the progress from any model you previously completed (which locks them out of running that particular one since it's treated as complete for them). The modules tend to be shortish, which is good and bad, but there's tons…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You guys could literally make banks out of this game if you focused on EN translation and other languages instead of Multiplayer and Mobile system.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really think this game is something pretty unique and special. I would recommend checking it out, even if just to support the devs (who are shockingly transparent).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If the translations are better, then yes this game would be good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Before you read this review, I will say that my playtime listed at the time of review does not reflect my true playtime, as it is more accurately about eighty hours of so of playtime at the time of review, because of a bug I had regarding my saves transferring over to the Steam Cloud. To begin, I will say this; Depersonalization is a game I absolutely loved as someone who partakes in many homebrewed TRPGs/Play-by-chat games with my friends over Discord. It truly scratched an itch that not even…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a real surprise. At first glance, it looks like some quirky “anime waifu” dating game—but it’s not. Underneath the surface, it’s a genuine RPG in the vein of Baldur’s Gate 3, Disco Elysium, and other choice-heavy, narrative-driven titles. The official content is fully playable in English. You’ll run into the occasional untranslated item, but these are minor and not essential to understanding or enjoying the game. The translated portions are done well, and the writing is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Depersonalization is a very unique take on the JRPG genre and is very much inspired by Lovecraftian lore. The game still has a way to go but there is quite a bit of content available for the current price and has a lot of replay value due to being able to redo chapters with different characters with different stats and abilities. Replaying the chapters unlocks new items that can give you a big advantage on the next play through and even change certain outcomes. I highly recommend this game to…
