I’ve played a ton of modern shooters, and somehow DOOM And DOOM II still feel better than a lot of them. The movement is fast, the guns feel punchy, and the level design is just fun. No tutorials, no cutscenes every five minute just you, demons, and a shotgun.

Critics, per Wikipedia

Upon its release in December 1993, Doom became an "overnight phenomenon". It was an immediate financial success for id, making a profit within a day after release. Although the company estimated that only 1% of shareware downloaders bought the full game, this was enough to generate initial daily revenue of US$100,000, selling in one day what Wolfenstein had sold in one month. By May 1994, Wilbur said that the game had sold over 65,000 copies, and estimated that the shareware version had been distributed over 1 million times. In 1995, Wilbur estimated the first-year sales as 140,000, while in 2002 Petersen said it had sold around 200,000 copies in its first year. By late 1995, Doom was…

DOOM I went into DOOM expecting a game that would feel incredibly dated and that wouldn’t hold up all too well in the modern day, but I was pleasantly surprised. The only parts of DOOM that made it feel old were its simple level design and lack of the ability to look up and down, which hurts aiming a bit. DOOM II DOOM II has the addition of new enemies and the glorious Super Shotgun, but is otherwise very similar to DOOM. It shares the same artstyle and has most of the same weapons, but…

The movement is simple but so fast and fluid, and just plain fun to control. The limitations of the time are to its benefit in that they really had to think outside the box to not make the levels feel samey - and they don't. As someone who grew up playing Doom back on our old DOS computer, I can say this is one of the best versions of Doom available. This version has many great quality of life improvements carried over from other source ports (Kill/Item/Secret counter, improved mouse support, removed engine limits etc). At the same time, it also keeps the core game mechanics unchanged from the original DOS version, making it as close as you can get to a true vanilla experience. Probably the best remaster from…
