What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 192 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (1,790 of 3,312 positive).
Players say the game is fun once controls are fixed, but the default controls are widely criticized. [1][2][3] Some players find the game short and lacking content, while others enjoy the Doom VR experience. [2][4][5]

As Doom in VR theoretically it should be awesome... it is but there's a catch, if you don't have an HTC Vive you have to use a community controller layout and enter/ copy paste some text using the in-game console command because Bethesda was too lazy or cheap to implement right stick camera support for anyone not using the Vive which probably has hurt this game's reputation as it's status is currently mixed which is …

Normally I would leave a Negative review based on the many issues the game has, but considering there are plenty of those and me adding to it isn't going to do anything I thought I'd give the game a Positive review because once you actually get the game working it is a lot of fun. Even though it is super short. If you are a fan of the 2016 Remake and are willing to spend a little time getting it to work then I think …

Whoever designed the control schema is an agent from hell sent here to prevent us from killing his comrades. I have never played a game with worse controls than this.

I wish I could give this a positive review, because when it works, it can be really good fun. Not quite as viscerally satisfying as the game it's based on, but not a bad time, especially if you can get it for cheap. It is absolutely little more than a tech demo, but it can be a fun tech demo. The key words though are when it works. The game is a technical mess, buggy and unstable, game breaking issues are …

I liked playing through this game, a lot. it was challenging, fast paced, and visually beautiful. The weapons of Doom are second to none, and this iteration of the game is no exception. The Telefrag feels SO good in VR! I prefer games to have no cutscenes, and Doom got close. But the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ controls are unbelievable on the index. It is absolutely crazy go nuts bad. They should've put in support for keybindings for …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to sound crazy, but I actually like this game. DOOM VFR is a good experience if you tweak the settings enough, the game is brutal, fun, and fast paced. You can hate me for liking it, but I'm still going to like it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun once you get it working. I just had to follow this guide to get it to work on quest, works perfectly. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2736094459 its really easy to fix the jank in the controls just by using the steam vr controller binds modifier
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a shame this game has a bad reputation because it's incredible, and should be the DEFINITIVE way to rip and tear. Yes the controls were a mess on modern headsets BUT you can fix it/remap it. I played on a Meta Quest 3S and I started with one of the most popular steam user controller binding: Doom VFR: Smooth Turning on Right Joystick. You may need to follow the instructions here to get it to stick, but I'm pretty sure it just worked when I switched:…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doesn't work on quest 3, I wasn't able to get the controllers working even after following the guide in the community post.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DOOM 2016 in VR. It doesnt get much better than that. Although requires some configuring to feel right on quest, its worth it to feel like the ultimate badass.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're looking for a high quality older PCVR title, this is a good fine, and definitely when it's on sale. Yeah there's a lot of complaints about the controlls, but there's an easy fix. If you follow the instructions on this community link, it will help you fix the controlls for Quest 3. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2736094459 It was easy to do, and after that, the controlls were nearly perfect. Also, if you're computer can handle it, go into the advanced…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: With modded controls (smooth turn + smooth locomotion), the game actually shines. Grab it on a deep sale (under $5), but it's worth it. When I first bought this game, I dropped it immediately due to the horrendous controls and teleport-only movement. I came back years later and ended up enjoying it—after reconfiguring the controls. Once you modernize the controls, the game becomes a lot more fun. You might even forget you're not playing as The Slayer—this story is set prior to DOOM…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's probably one of the worst AAA VR games i've played. It's not terrible, but just meh... It feels like someone with flat screen game mindset was tasked to do a VR game. VR really adds nothing to gameplay, there's so so little interactions with your hands and body, that i was super bored after just an hour. Also, controls are not great. I've spent probably 30min looking for a way to play it properly on Quest 3
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IF THEY STILL SELL IT THEY SHOULD STILL SUPPORT IT!! Why is there no warning on the store page about the controller issue? This game was really fun on PSVR when it came out, trying to play it on a brand new Pimax and the controls do not work. Simply slimy. Glad I only paid a few dollars but even still it feels like a rip, can not play the game unless there is a mod or patch to fix the issue. Buyer BEWARE
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They couldn't even be bothered to add smooth turning which would of been a really easy task for them to fix it, apparently you can attempt to add it yourself by opening the console every time you play the game and adding a load of commands... no thanks, I couldn't be bothered, tried playing it standing but got all twisted up in the cable as I'm using a pico neo3 link through display port.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very disappointing. The graphics look good, but playing the game was difficult and not enjoyable. Movement is dodgy, when it works at all. Even in the practice areas I could hardly get from place to place. Maybe it was designed for different controllers. I have the Quest 3 and the controls did not work well at all. You have to push in the joysticks with your thumbs, which I found to be awkward and hard to get right. In the end it was more annoying than fun. Other games have much more natural…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →when i played the game, it wasn't really that bad. it was mostly just doom 2016.. but in virtual reality. nothing much to say really, still fun though!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great game if it works, however it doesn't seem to be compatible with quest 3 controllers. I can't even move in-game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Oculus controllers are a nightmare to use with this game. There needs to be a patch for them.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doesn't work on modern VR headsets
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy if you're using Meta Quest 3 and its controllers -- Just don't won't work
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Firstly, this game is garbage. Secondly, If I could refund this and any other Bethesda game I unfortunately own, I would. F Bethesda. RIP Charlie.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i advise getting a mod that allows for proper movement instead of the teleporting style. once you have that the game becomes 10x more fun
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the devs were probably excited to make this but were shortchanged on time and resources to bring it to its full potential. The technical aspects lean very heavily on assumptions about the way players will be using the game that don't hold up, like a preference for teleporting movement, being able/willing to physically turn all the way around, even down to the specific Vive controllers that are supported. This was a VR experience where the barrier to entry was too high for my liking, so…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Valve do what Bethesdon't. This recently just started working for me on the SteamVR beta branch with PSVR2 and no config edits or convoluted settings changes to get controls working. Must be part of the Controller binding unification Valve is doing in the background in anticipation for the Steam Frame. Full locomotion, weapon wheel and all controls work. Game is pretty fun twitch shooter, 4.5 HR slice of life of what the 2016 Doom could have been if it was fully ported to VR. When you collect…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Life is too short to play a VR game this carelessly made. Even given when it was made it is still trash. Even considering using the awful Vive controllers it is trash. There are many small team releases that are MUCH better than this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That was a seriously terrible 5 minute experience. Who the hell mapped these controls?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The movement controls are HORRIBLE. But everything else seems to hit the mark. Blasting demons feels great and the game looks amazing! UPDATE: If you are on 3S like I am MAKE SURE THE CONTROLLERS DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VIEW. If the headset loses sight of the controllers early it glitches. (Stopped happening later in the game) And there is a smooth movement option.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doom is one of my favourite franchises, but this is not worth the buy anymore. You can play the entire Doom 2016 in VR with a mod Get the mod here: https://github.com/CactusVRStudios/KHARVOX/releases#release-v1.0.3 Enjoy Doom 2016 in VR

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The buggiest game I've ever played. If I can get the sound working then the game just quits. Sheesh what drek.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't bother, the incompetent / lazy / seriously misguided developers did not implement the most basic of VR controls to make the game playable. There are plenty of other similar games that work straight out of the box that are more deserving of your money. Ridiculous that this is still on the store to be honest. Total let down.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall Review: DOOM VFR – A Cool Idea Held Back by Its Own Design Choices Hours played: 100 min. (Long enough to get used to it, short enough to wish it had been done better) DOOM VFR sounds incredible on paper: DOOM’s fast-paced demon-slaying action brought into virtual reality. My first thoughts jumping in were exactly that — DOOM combat, intense environments, and fun VR gun mechanics. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t really deliver the experience you’d expect from either a DOOM game or a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For some reason after finishing the tutorial and being put into the proper game it is just extremely laggy to the point where alt tabbing the game and trying to move my computer mouse was honestly in Negative frames at the rate it was moving. Tried relaunching the game and also restarted my pc too, before loading into the main menu alone, in the warning messages it was causing the same issue the game running terribly and my pc being super slow. Absolute garbage Also saw other steam reviews and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →BEWARE! This game not working on Meta Quest 3 !!! Game is starting but controllers not working!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I understand why id software and Bethesda did what they did, Vr was new and uncharted territory. The controls of the base game are horrendous at launch they only had Teleportation and eventually added smooth locomotion but they didn’t add any buttons to turn the camera and required physical movement. However with some tweaks for smooth turning and locomotion this game REALLY did have potential I felt the same fast pace chaos of DOOM (2016) Running around guns and guts ablaze as well as the even…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Two big problems: 1. The game doesn't work out of the box I needed to decrease the resolution just for it to not constantly crash, at first the game would load properly but just stutter every time you moved your head until it got to a point where I had to take off my headset just to close the game. 2. The game is extremely clunky and not fun What's the point of getting the game to work when the game itself plays like ass? The controls just aren't optimised for anything modern like a Quest…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Random thing of the day: Doom VFR A Doom for VR! I struggled a bit with the controls at the beginning, but after I got used to it, it was a fun game!
positive · AI labelView post →this piece of ♥♥♥♥ does not even run without reducing screen resolution to minimum. Once i finally managed to run it, all i can do is go forward and backward. turning on right controller does not work at all. stay away from this crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love doom but the headaches are insane, my eyes hurt after just the tutorial.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its ass it hurts my head
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Its rushed trash. Now to the actual review: There are many things wrong with this game, my main problem being the controls, locomotion just feels rushed and you cant even turn properly. The weapon select wheel doesnt work and sometimes gets stuck which is extremely annoying in tense situations and all of that combined with the fact that the story is a thing that, even without having played the game before, you can play through in a day, just dont make it worth 15 bucks. For point of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun game for a game that game out in 2017 but too short and especially hard if you play above Hurt Me Plenty. I've played with Virtual Desktop, changed the controls on Steam VR for Quest 3 by Khira and most importantly you have to enter some bindings in the console to have smooth turning. I don't know why they didn't put that directly in the menu as an option. Buy it on sale because it's very short. I wish we had the whole 2016 game though
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly not THAT bad. its cute. doom 2016 in vr. the cacodemons scare me!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay? Pretty fun. Controls? Pretty not fun. I’d love to enjoy this game, but the controls feel like they were assembled by a demon with oven mitts on. Apparently there are fixes online, but for a full-price VR game from Bethesda, I shouldn’t need to perform a ritual just to get basic movement working. Since it’s never getting updated again, this is basically the final form… and that’s a shame, because it could’ve been good if it didn’t fight me harder than the actual demons.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the controls are stupid and after some time it asked me to "reconnect" my controllers. Don't buy this
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DOOM VFR, developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, is an ambitious attempt to bring the relentless, high-intensity action of the DOOM franchise into the realm of virtual reality. Released in 2017, this title lets players step directly into the boots of a cybernetic survivor in the Union Aerospace Corporation’s Mars facility, offering a fresh perspective on the series’ signature demon-slaying chaos. By leveraging VR technology, DOOM VFR aims to immerse players in a visceral,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bad experience as soon as you start playing, controls for Quest 3S are broken AF. Found some semi not ♥♥♥♥♥♥ controls on the community hub, still not great. Can't even finish the game because it crashes every time I make any progress on the final level. What a waste of time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unplayable. This should be removed from the store. First game I've refunded on Steam.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its alr ig, even thoug it uses alot of Doom 2016 maps which is kinda unoriginal, but i still had fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't expect anything more than what it is. It's a simple, short spin off, with loads of rehash and reuse. Putting that aside. Despite what many people desire (fast paced run and gun), this game provides just enough. You're not supposed to be the DOOM Slayer, you aren't the DOOM Slayer, and thats fine. Equal guns, equal funs. If you want simple DOOM VR fun, this is that. Sure theres some extra tidbits here and there, but thats just adding to it. It's literally just DOOM, Virtual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥…
