Players praise Downwell as a fast-paced, addictive roguelike with simple graphics and deep mechanics. [1][2][3] Many find it challenging but rewarding, often returning for one more run. [4][5][6] Some criticize its randomness and visibility issues during chaotic moments. [7][8]

Downwell is a phenomenal little roguelike, with blazing fast skill-based gameplay, simple graphics, many color palettes, and a lot of charm, it captivates with its intricate mechanics. The gameplay mechanics are incredible, with a lot of perks and weapons. Besides a few weapons/perks being clearly more powerful than others, it's well balanced enough to provide a compelling experience. Also, the soundtrack is …

This game was really easy to learn, but man was it hard to master. I would be dying over and over due to my own mistakes, but I didn't give up until I reached the bottom of the well. The various unlockable also helped with beating this game as well. The music was something, but I decided to mute it to make me focus more. Overall, a very fine game that'll keep you on your toes in traversing the well.

one of my favourite rougelikes to passively sink time into. fun and frenetic gameplay loop with a high enough skill ceiling to keep you hooked, coupled with really smooth spritework and a nice soundtrack/sound design. also it's cheap asf, runs on dirt and only takes up 40mb of disk space - it's virtually impossible to regret buying this game man just get it

A short and difficult arcade game where you jump down a dangerous well equipped only with a pair of Gunboots. It has a very simple control scheme, but the complementary mechanics and the unique levels you’ll be falling through make for a fun and frenetic gameplay loop, where you’ll be honing the skills necessary to reach the bottom while discovering the dangers that lie below. Downwell naturally teaches you a vital, …

Short, fun and challenging. And if you get to the bottom of the well there's something there worth the challenge!

Critics, per Wikipedia
Upon release, Downwell received critical acclaim. On Metacritic, the game currently holds a score of 81/100 for Microsoft Windows, 91/100 for iOS, 80/100 for PlayStation 4, and 85/100 for PlayStation Vita. Steven Hansen from Destructoid praised the game's design concept and giving it a perfect 10/10 by saying that "[t]hese are the kind of things you learn as you delve deeper and deeper into Downwell's four worlds (three levels each) and they are presented intelligently." Another positive review was written by Nadia Oxford of Gamezebo, who gave the game 5 out of 5 stars and praised Downwell's overall play-style and design, stating that "Downwell is easily one of the best action games to hit…

It’s from the creator of Downwell and no one’s talked about it because Netflix seems keen to spend more money on game studios than it does informing people how the hell to play a “Netflix Game.” You just download the game on the App Store for your phone and log in!

positive · AI labelView post →Some engines are very much set up for Bigger Badder Specs™ as a default and takes a lot of hoops for it to be even remotely optmized even if you have graphics like Downwell or Minit. There's a lot of default bloat in some of the popular indie game engines is what I'm saying.

Easily one of my top faves of 2022 and my all-time favorite on mobile. Also, I have to mention, a *very* playful soundtrack by bo en. The whole game is a treasure, a great experience all-round.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good enough game, but it has some serious movement and hit detection issues. When lots is going on, it can be impossible to spot your character. Runs are super luck dependent, and not everything can be solved with skill. Also, just include a proper options menu, it's the 21st century

This is an awesome boss theme tho! Due to it being a roguelike, this perfectly captures the intensity of facing a boss that can reset you if you slip up!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Downwell was developed over the course of the game, and he'd shopped it around on the indie Japanese game market with little success... until Devolver Digital caught a GIF on Japanese twitter. They made contact, a deal was struck, and bam, 2015, Downwell debuted on mobile gaming.
neutral · AI labelView post →The story of how Downwell came to be is fascinating: its designer, Ojiro Fumoto, had no background in game design but found pursuing it would be more fulfilling than belting La Traviata. He threw himself into game-a-week projects, teaching himself the fundamentals through trial and error.
neutral · AI labelView post →This simple game has captivated me for many hours over the decade I've been indulging in it. I really can say it's one of the best arcade games of all time and I do plan on building a cabinet for this title in the future.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey! Game recommendation: Play Poinpy, on your phone, same creator as Downwell and it really shows, addictive gameplay, lots of replay value, lovely art style and soundtrack, and a lotta fun trying to keep up combos. neutral · AI labelView post →33. Downwell (2015, iOS / PC / Consoles). If this past year has taught me to appreciate anything, it's the elegance of *great* arcade game design. Downwell is no exception: inverting the usual premise of a vertical scrolling shooter, turning it into a free-fall dungeon crawl? *GENIUS.*
positive · AI labelView post →It’s an older game, but Downwell is fun. Just a little action/arcade game where you fall down a well and try to get combos by not touching the ground by bouncing off of enemies. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devolver.downwell_rerelease

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such a great roguelite. Tough, but easy to sink many hours trying again and again. Don't be fooled - yes I have all achievements but I promised I played much longer than 6 hours, because I mostly played on Switch. Before that I played it on PS4. I had to buy it on Steam so I could get all the achievements, and I DO recommend you get all the achievements for this game.

I have never beaten this game, only gotten up to the water stage. Laugh at me if you want, but I am blaming the mechanics for this. The roguelike elements don't reward the player for learning from their mistakes because of the high RNG. Your level structure, your mid-stage powerup choices, your item stores, and…
