What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 163 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (230 of 393 positive).
Some players enjoy the challenging mix of Puyo Puyo-style matching with Super Meat Boy hazards. [1][2][3] Many reviewers feel the obstacles ruin the puzzle gameplay and make combos impossible. [4][5][6] Several players compare it unfavorably to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Super Meat Boy. [7][8][9]

most of the negative reviews just come from not enjoying the gimmick this game has. the layback nature of Puyo Puyo and excrutiating difficulty of Team Meat games, mixed together into this lab-made abomination did not bode well for a lot of folks. but personally, i really enjoyed it! if you dont think a difficult game of this style sounds good, then dont buy it. shouldnt be too hard to follow..

♥♥♥♥ all of you. i actually really like this. the extra difficulty created by the obstacles makes the game different, and in my opinion, better and more compelling. i think its great and unfairly disliked !! it does get really difficult but thats just the same with the other meat boy games. this one is just a puzzle, and i believe that its a great combination !

I'll be honest, if your game is only fun when you're using cheats, you know there's an issue. I love puzzle games to death, and the moment I heard about a Meatboy Puzzle game inspired by Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was being made, I was so excited, especially after enjoying the Binding of Isaac spin off... The Legend of Bumbo! ...but frankly, this game is design wise broken on a fundamental level... The gist …

I recently discovered Puyo Pop which introduced me to this type of puzzle game. I then found out that a Super Meat Boy version of it existed, and saw that it had a bunch of negative reviews. I figured people were being dramatic, because Super Meat Boy franchise is known for being difficult, and decided to pick it up on sale to give it a go. I'm glad I got it on sale. This game sucks. They took a great game, Puyo …

I can't recommend this one for anybody who likes Super Meat Boy OR Puyo Puyo. It's baffling to me how the makers of this game could so badly miss the point of what makes either of these games so beloved and fun to play. It feels like there's a lot here that has been piled precariously together without much thought or care; yet somehow still managing to perch it all right at the edge of what *could* have been a …

Critics, per Wikipedia
On Metacritic, Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine received positive reviews for Windows and mixed reviews for the Switch version. Nintendo Life called it "a serviceable puzzler" but said it has low replayability if players are uninterested in making an already difficult game even harder. Slant Magazine praised its ability to retain the core elements of a Meat Boy game while transposing them to another genre. They also felt the difficulty made solving levels feel "incredibly rewarding" without it becoming too frustrating, thanks to the checkpoints. While praising the concept, TouchArcade felt Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine relies too much on luck to bypass the hazards, and they recommended Puyo Puyo…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel the same as how I felt with super meat boy forever. It's not a bad game, but it's not what we wanted out of the meat boy franchise.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible. Learn from me and don't buy games based on name recognition. Its basically robotnik's mean bean machine but with a sawblade in the middle of the screen because the people who own the meat boy ip now have no idea what they're doing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game, I really did, but when they put an emphasis on chains in the tutorial and then make it nigh impossible to do those since all of the blocks end up getting deleted so you don't get any of the satisfaction of being smart, it's just frustrating without any of the satisfaction. Maybe its supposed to be played different than doing crazy chains and stuff but when there's an emphasis on that at the beginning, its just not fun playing it like a puzzle game.

Is this game a masterpiece? No, this is Puyo Puyo in BRUTAL. It is a puzzler, popping matches (4 of a color) is satisfactory, but it comes with a special twist. The levels are full of deadly obstacles. Touch them while your blocks (Meat Boy clones) are falling down, and you are reset to the last automatic "in-level saving point" (you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yea, I can see why this is being sold for $2 now. the sound effects feel cheap, the UI and font feels very cheap. The art looks great, so are the animated cutscenes, those look wonderful.. it just sucks that it feels like half of the game had no effort put into it. The music sucks too.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately, Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine fails to deliver on what could have been a knockout idea. Similar to Super Meat Boy Forever, my criticism whittles down to "There was an idea here". Forever could have been a simple autorunner with some more controls to deviate it from the rest and have a focus on open ended level design that was intuitive and fun to explore. Sadly, a lot of primarily arbitrary factors bogs it down and makes it a frustrating game to complete. This game is no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who thought this concept sounded really interesting and fun, I've unfortunately been let down by the execution. You can never focus on trying to avoid hazards because you're too busy attempting to come up with a way to set up combos, and you can never focus on trying to set up combos because not only are you too busy trying to avoid increasingly present hazards, but your clones are also constantly getting deleted; likely while you're too distracted with the current drop to even…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an avid Puyo player, this game is horrible. It doesn't control anywhere near as well as it should and some of the A rank times are genuinely ridiculous
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nope, couldnt do it, couldnt sit through at least 10 minutes of it, Its like Puyo Puyo if Puyo Puyo wasnt fun and peak and was instead annoying and pretty f*cking boring
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine is not-so-subtle demented homage to the classic Sega release, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. If you've played that game before at sleepovers filled with Little Sleazer's™ pizza and caffeinated water, you'll feel right at home here....well, almost! You'll recognize the basic mechanics right away. These little a-holes drop from the ceiling and you gotta pair at least 4 of the same type to form a chain. Forming a chain builds up a 'genetic meter' that advances…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →literally frame perfect runs to get a+ ranks and the game values more your speed rather than combos
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I spent 22 hours with Dr Fetus Mean Meat Machine, and I regret every single one of them because this is easily the worst game I have ever forced myself to finish, and yes I went all the way to 100 percent which only made the experience more painful, more repetitive, and more frustrating than it had any right to be, because what starts as a mildly interesting puzzle concept quickly turns into a tedious grind that feels designed to waste your time instead of reward your effort, with mechanics…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Take everything fun about puyopop. Building combos, setting up for big payoffs etc. Now add hazards to that, a lot of which will move in such a way that setting up combos becomes impossible and you end up just cycling the same part of the same level because the combo you had set up is now immediately ruined by a new obstacle that was just added from you hitting a level milestone/checkpoint. This is certainly not a recommendable game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really fun game. I'm not much of a Puyo player, but I do enjoy puzzle games like this and thought this was an enjoyable game. I think if you want to do giant 10 chains, then this may not be the game for you, but the traps and obstacles provide a good challenge if you want to get more creative with chain building. I also think it a game you can win if you're not exactly good at puyo chains. If you're on the fence about this game, then try the demo first, the stages in it will give you a…

neutral · AI labelView post →I’m as big a Super Meat Boy fan as anyone else. After spending about 15 minutes stuck in the middle of Level 1-13, I unlocked the achievement “Why am I still playing this?” It’s almost as if they know this game sucks. Difficulty, challenge, and tedium are separate things. And for the foreseeable future, me and this game are also separate things. Save your $1—let alone $10—for something better instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thought I'd give it a try because I thought surely all the comments were going in with the wrong expectations; surely if you expect the game to be like Puyo Puyo it's bad, but maybe if you treat it like its own thing it's actually quite fun—nope! It is grotesquely tedious and boring, just like everyone says. Kind of disappointing, it has such a cool look to it. It seems you can EITHER go for cool combos (which levels actively punish you for because they will tear through and destroy your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It hurts leaving a bad review like this because I am in love with the art style and gameplay of this game so much. But some levels are super unbalanced, and the A+ timer is very inconsistent in difficulty. I hope they bother to come back to this, and tweak the gameplay jank so I can change this review

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://youtu.be/ubepNwoTIyw Adding the twist of traps and hazards to a classic puzzle formula is a miss here as it's far less engaging than flat out annoying.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(2023) Dr Fetus' Mean Meat Machine. Dr Fetus is such a fun character to draw. I did the design for the gun in this sequence too. The same gun can be seen at the end of Super Meat Boy Forever
neutral · AI labelView post →This is Match Four Arcade Puzzle game with gameplay reminiscent of the Puyo Puyo series and featuring characters from the Super Meat Boy universe. This fun, fast-paced, bloody casual lets players test their skills. This is a real challenge! Your aim here is to create groups of four or more clones of the same color to make them disappear. You need to create lengthy…

neutral · AI labelView post →I gave it an honest try and just didn't like it. Then decided to uninstall after three hours. While I do like the concept and idea of this. I just really didn't like how it actually plays. Artificially difficult obstacles are annoying. The controls didn't feel very smooth at all. I did like the cutscenes, I do like the audio. But that gameplay just really isn't my vibe. Just feels like it's designed to be annoying. Lacks the lil fun aspect of previous games. Some folks might enjoy it for the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not a fan of puyo puyo or puzzle games in general as I've never really been able to grasp their playstyle. So, a game like this being a wildly different take on them through the ideal playstyle was a surprisingly nice breath of fresh air - puyo puyo has remained stagnant for years so I believe if they just copied that 1:1 the title would not at all be noteworthy Even though this game markets itself as puyo puyo, looks like puyo puyo and even tells you it IS puyo puyo right out the gate…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's Puyo Puyo Game Style with Their Hazard Traps around the board that make challenging If you're good Puzzle Game You can definitely beat it I manage beat the game 100% somehow
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Considering the mixed reception, I was expecting a significantly worse product than this actually is. And being a lover of Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine doesn't sway this game in my favour, in fact, whereas that game was all about pulling off combos and chains, this accounts for that, while largely focusing on survival. It does have one key problem and that's communication. Sometimes it's not clear how the obstacles are going to change until you're dead and I still can't fully tell when I'm…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A genre of game like this needs polished controls to be fun and that is something this game doesn't have. Playing feels like an uphill battle.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →after playing super meat boy, this game... ugh no story, no proper gameplay, cheap ass cutscenes, easy ass level designs... i wouldnt recommend unless you want to see a glimpse of super meat boy you might enjoy it if you want to kill some time on steam deck tho
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do not recommend this game at all. The controls are very clunky on a controller, the premise is flawed, the levels do not feel satisfying at all, combo chains are practically useless, the score means nothing, ive actually encountered a softlock during the final encounter of the game, and you cannot edit your controls in-game. The gameplay was not a fun experience at all. I did like the games presentation tho and the cut scenes are very well animated but thats this games only saving grace.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's rough giving this game a negative rating. I love Puyo Puyo. The problem is the game is annoying. Puyo is about getting long chains, while this game encourages quickly getting 1 or 2 chains before the stage hazards kill. To balance the game in its current state to appeal to players going for longer chains, the hazards should freeze for longer during stage transitions, and that freeze should happen again if the player dies after a checkpoint. Furthermore, in Puyo Puyo games since Tsu, each…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is an eccentric and brutal fusion of two vastly different worlds—classic falling-block puzzle games and the sadistic, precision-driven design philosophy of the Super Meat Boy universe. Developed and published by Headup in collaboration with Team Meat, the game takes the familiar structure of match-based puzzlers like Puyo Puyo or Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine and injects it with the punishing difficulty and dark humor that fans of Meat Boy have come to expect.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is genuinely one of the most annoying games ive played, and not in the hard way. The game does feel fair at all
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically they made a Puyo Puyo game that is annoying. And not in a good or ejoyable way. You cannot fully dedicate yourself to building chains and combos while still being challenging. All traps in the game are mor like random and making you rage. At first i tried to implement all those traps to trigger my combos, but basically they just don't. I have read a couple of reviews by people, who said the same things like me. And thought to myself "Oh come on those people just didn't try hard…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately this game does not hold up in quality to its franchise predecessors. Artificially difficult and repetitive. Do not purchase even if heavily discounted.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be honest I enjoyed this game alot. Maybe it is easier for me because I don't know much about Puyo Puyo so I don't really have a comparison. To me the game rarely felt unfair, most of the time I noticed that I made a mistake after dying instead of the game killing me without anything I could have done. There are only three levels in the later worlds where I felt like the game was "unfair" or at least frustrating. I have to say tho that I completely ignored the combo system in pretty much…

neutral · AI labelView post →who on earth thought it was good game design to force restarts in PUZZLE levels. this game cant decide if it wants to be super meat boy or puyopuyo and the middle ground it found is just atrocious.. the tutorial made it so clear i have 0 interest in playing this game. at least it was 50 cents
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll admit I didn't get very far, I threw it on one day to try it out and busted the first couple levels no issue. Then I got to the first level a saw starts spinning around and how it just mucks up your whole process. I love Meat Boy, I've played a couple block-builders, but with the other reviews complaining about the injected difficulty, and that first level already leaving me scratching my head like "Is this what the gimmick is?" I didn't want to get a whole lot further.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine may potentially be the saddest game in my steam library purely on account of constantly reminding me of the downward trajectory my favourite platformer's franchise is taking
negative · AI labelView post →My voice won't be able to help the developer anymore, so I'll keep it short: I don't need to mirror Dr. Fetus' notorious gesture and can leave that finger behind, except for when talking about A+'ing levels maybe, which I attempted a bit, but will force you to go @full tilt many times ≠ synergizing with the patience, required to successfully chain while avoiding reckless attempts 🥵 Meaty score: 🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩🍖
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If your favorite Tetris game is Tetris plus (the one where the main single player campaign has you waiting for a guy to scale down your Tetris blocks to finish a level) and you were hoping someone would make an equivalent to that but with Puyo-Puyo, the team behind SMB: Forever has you covered. Because let me tell you the last ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing Puyo-Puyo lacked was stage hazards that mostly amount to you waiting for the next chance to drop your next piece. Even worse is the game has the gall to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a terrible concept with even worse execution. imagine tetris but with precision platformer esque traps all over the board... what? and why? Whoever thought this was a good idea... uhh maybe don't have ideas anymore? ... please?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is ok. Probably like 5 hours of gameplay if you want to finish all the worlds, but if you want to get an A+ on every single level, then good luck. Idk what the developers want to do with their IP but to milk it to the ground.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Creative. A good way to use the IP. Still more of a fan of Mean Beam Machine. If you're a fan of puzzle games, or of "Super Meat Boy" you should pick this up. You'll be glad you did. Grab it when it's on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(2023) Dr Fetus' Mean Meat Machine - Some roughs of Dr Fetus from the game's opening sequence. It's fun to try getting the most out of his simple design. The floating arms give a good amount of freedom with his posing.
neutral · AI labelView post →i'm not a guy big into puyo puyo but this game is just really boring. i even got a friend of mine who is a HUGE puyo puyo fan to play it and even he didn't like it. the ui feels so bland, the gameplay is very slow paced which goes against meat boy's fast gameplay, the saws are too hard to see sometimes, the "evolutions" are pointless visual overhauls for the meat pieces, and i even heard there is no post game content (a+ ranks do not unlock you anything other than achievements). not worth the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea of a Puyo puyo game in a Meat Boy style is awesome and a lovely throwback to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. The downside is the saw blades make the satisfying combing very difficult past a two of a three chain. The slow down mechanic is helpful but the stage hazards instantly removing your placed pieces when advancing is frustrating. Game play is place as many one combos as quick as possible while dodging saws and for that I would recommending looking else where for your Puyo Puyo…
