What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (7,506 of 8,122 positive).
Players widely praise Dragon Quest Builders 2 as an excellent building game that improves on its predecessor. [1][2][3] Many reviewers love the guided story and quests, which provide direction for those who find Minecraft too open-ended. [4][2][5] Some players express frustration with long, frequent dialogue that interrupts gameplay. [1][6][7]

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is genuinely an amazing game. I loved it way more than I expected. The quests are fun, the progression feels great, and there’s a constant sense of discovery that keeps you hooked. Building, exploring, helping NPCs, it all clicks really well, and I was having a blast for a few hours. And then I hit the Noticeboard. That thing is flooded with porn and hentai images. Not suggestive. Not …

while I do have gripes with this game (absurdly long dialogue segments, bad combat controls and a tendency to be too handholdy) this is one of my all time favourites and scratches an itch that no other game has been able to. My biggest gripe of all is that there isnt a 3 yet.
- [2]
Easy recommendation. Hits an 8 to 10 on basically every metric. If you're not normally a fan of building games because they are too open ended, this might be the one for you since the experience is much more guided with quests, characters, and plot progression.

I reviewed Dragon Quest Builders 1 as "what if Minecraft had a story, a structure, goals and was actually fun?" DQB2 improves on its predecessor in almost every way....except...the dialogues. Not the quality of them, just the frequency! Your building and progress is constantly halted so that characters can jammer endlessly at you. For the love of all that is Holy, please SHUT UP and let me build! Other than …

Top 10 games of all time, no exaggeration. If you like Minecraft, Terraria, etc, this is the perfect game for you! This game improves on the first in just about every way! The first DQB is worth a play as well, but if you only play one... this is the one!!!
Summarised from 34 of the 222 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
91% of the 179 Steam reviewers we collected recommend DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS™ 2. The complaint that keeps coming up: excessively long and frequent dialogue segments. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Steam REALLY needs a mixed or informational option instead of the "Yes" or "No" options when reviewing a game. I LOVE Dragon Quest Builders, the first one was outstanding and this sequel improves in every single way. Yet the main reason I'm giving this a no is the content you get for paying $50 (I swear this game used to cost $60). The positives are huge, but lets get the main issue out of the way first. The story is mandatory, slow, and often boring. If you want complete freedom and a wide…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, this game has been a favorite of mine since late 2019. Don't let my play time fool you, that's just what I've done on Steam. I've got physical copies for playstation and switch and have easily sunk several thousand hours into it in the last 6 1/2 years. Gameplay is very straightforward, simple to learn and simple to master, but that allows a lot of room for creativity pretty much right off the bat. The story is equally straightforward: it gets a little hand-hold-y and definitely encourages…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had my save corrupted on xbox so I bought on here, in hopes I could at least back my saves up this time. Wish I had read the reviews of the corruption issue still occurring on PC...The game fundamentally destroys itself after so many hours played... Game performance is awful compared to xbox. The controller has no smoothing on the sensitivity just raw input. Feels like I'm moving the camera in a gamecube game from 15 years ago. Could be an issue on my end but everything else works just fine...…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My playtime is high and I did finish the game and do some creative building in the game. Overall it's not the worst port done by square enix, but it is still a square enix port. Meaning controls are terrible on keyboard and mouse, the controller support is hit or miss and seems to be best for an xbox controller, so those of us that prefer playstation controllers are out of luck. The game has had some issues on the newest windows which seems to be common for most square enix ports lately so be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is really good. I bought it because I wanted to try Pokopia, but am unwilling to spend $600 on a single game. This game scratches the itch that game was giving me. The building is fun, the environment is cozy and engaging, and I honestly do get the drive to help the villagers. My main complaint is that the combat is very shallow and boring. It should have been turn based! This is Dragon Quest! The writing can be a little long winded but that is par for the course for any JRPG. The…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is no game that comes close to DQB2 as a colony sim. I dream everyday for a Dragon Quest Builders 3. The demo will allow you access the first island of the game and is 10 full hours of gameplay for you to try out! I've never played any other game that comes close as a colony sim where you are someone who can walk around within the colony. Terraria, Necesse, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and Medieval Dynasty come close but they all lack a guided story/questline. While it obviously looks…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THE ONLY REASON I CANT SAY GET THIS GAME IS THE SAVE SYSTEM! 2 outa 5! I love the block collecting and building. I LOVE the music! I LOVE the adventure and story! I LOVE the chance of coming across community houses in island adventuring. I LOVE the art style! I HATE the save system in this game so much! i need to be able to fully make back up saves and NEVER have to worry about my save BEING corrupted. its so limited in its crappy save system and on XBOX and STEAM BOTH SAVES got corrupted…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is hands down the best game of all time. Ever. *Bubbly Bri'ish voice* Nothin' beats a Dragon Quest Builders 2 holiday! For me DQBII is like Animal Crossing, Kingdom Hearts & Minecraft combined, with everything from the more buildery games given useful speed and quality-of-life tweaks. The Good: The building is insanely deep for a game that isn’t doing modern voxely things, with multiple ways to build things that prevent it from taking forever. Crafting is so rich. Systems stack. You…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay: 9.2/10 ; Story: 7.8/10 If the first game could be described as "Minecraft with a classic Dragon Quest flavor," then Builders 2 feels more like "Minecraft meets Story of Seasons and Terraria." Likewise, if the original was about a lone hero rebuilding the world , this sequel is about everyone working together to make it happen . Let's start with the gameplay. Purely from a gameplay perspective, there's no question that Builders 2 is richer and deeper than its…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is my absolute favorite game, bar none. its hard to describe what makes it so perfect without spoiling the hell out of it, so i will instead tell you that if you were ever interested in the wistful 'creating a dream world' aspect of minecraft that the ending poem tried to convey instead of scoffing at it, this game takes these concepts and expands upon it and creates something that is more than the sum of its parts. also i like making little houses for my funny villagers and watching them…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PAINFULLY slow and linear. You keep hoping that the game will open up and you'll have some freedom to build as you like but... no.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →skip Builders 1 and just play this one instead. the first game has a better narrative on a meta level but Builders 2 is the more fun game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the only disappointing thing about this game is that there wont be more. Hours upon hours of gameplay and fun for all age groups. even at full price i 100% recommend this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Square Enix we are yearning YES WE are yearning for a third installment for DQ builders 😔 I adored the first one and the second one exceeded all expectations let Koei back in the studio
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Greatest MC style game ever made. Far better than Minecraft itself. I was so looking forward to DQB3 and 4. Alas... Works great on the deck, but you can hear the system struggling.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is so cute and fun. Absolutely love it. My only real nit-pick is that I just wish that I could quick skip through some of the dialogue.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are so many complaints I have about this game. The story is about as predictable cookie cutter as they come. The pacing can be absolutely abysmal (the game's third act is especially grating). The combat is simplistic, and the game's final boss is just plain unsatisfying. But I'd be lying if I said that this game wasn't an absolute blast to play. Dragon Quest Builders 2 takes all of the flaws and weaknesses of the first game and improves upon them in just about every way. It prioritizes…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Every time the narrator, Hargon, or *Malroth "speaks" you can no longer interact with the game for a minimum of 15 seconds per sentence displayed on screen. This is a considerable amount of time. Every time someone arbitrarily joins your party, walks 15 ft with you, and then leaves the party, you are unable to interact with the gameworld for ~7 seconds as a trill sounds and you stare at a textbox you are not allowed to close. The same thing occurs whenever you pick up a macguffin. At the end…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought Dragon Quest Builders 2 expecting it to be a building simulator good to go out of the box, with a story mode tacked on to the side in case you needed some of the more complex mechanics explained to you, what i got instead for the following 20+ hours was nothing but boring tutorials and boring dialogue, with any amount of freedom i'd be conceded entirely depending on how much of the boring tutorials and boring dialogue i was willing to sit throug. Neither the story nor the characters…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best building game ever., I wish they have a 3rd one. The story is fun and easy to follow. The ends of the story give you acess to all the tool and items to build on an island whatever you want. I bought this game on the switch and now on steam.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would like to say this is a decent game its not bad or good just decent enough to be enjoyable for the first couple of hours & days then just kinda sits there in my steam library. Cons: - The inventory system scares me sometimes even if you can auto-sort it, there is just to much inventory pages and a bit complex (in my opinion) - Why is crafting & building such a PAIN! There are some items that are forever items like wood and stone which is understandable but there are some items and blocks…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game that improves on the previous in every way, even as it repeats some beats and structure. I thought I wasn't gonna like Malroth, only to get hit with a gut punch on how much I relied on him when he's not in the party. Near infinite storage early on, encouraging a craft alot and forget it strategy, and the first person mode makes this play like minecraft but also fine tuned block placing and allows for interacting in smaller rooms without the camera having a tizzy. The best part…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wanted to try Pokopia but found this game recommended by many online. Tried it and it is really enjoyable. Just note that the controls are a bit wanky for building compared to MineCraft.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is so good. its like stardew valley and trove combined into one singular game. You have character customization, several companions who tag along during your adventure and fight by your side, As you progress and level up you can craft new armors, weapons, and cosmetic items for your house. The best way i can describe the buiilding system is like trove. the blocks are even the same, except its more graphically advanced in that theirs a number of glowing items, theirs a lot of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a game similar to Minecraft where you can build towns, cities, or anything you might want (but I’m not sure if there’s a size limit to how much one can build. If you’re going to build a super giant metropolis. Minecraft might be better in this aspect) It has quite a bit of story though, so that’s the upside. They each have their own graphical charm. I enjoyed this game a lot; I first played it on Nintendo Switch actually, it was only recently that I got it on Steam…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing. Only downside is to get access to all of the sandbox you have to beat the game. The gameplay is extremely easy though, it's just a little time consuming. I'm also not a fan of dragged out dialogue. Otherwise a great game, especially if you're into Minecraft. This feels like minecraft with better animation.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this religiously on my ps4 back when I had a PC lockout. This is niche survival building game with a main story and basically endless end game. You wanna build something, you do it, just like minecraft. There are limitations but because of the other additions that arent present in other games of this genre, its fine. I got a Nintendo Switch 2 for Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave coming up and picked up Pokopia as well. Playing pokopia has made me think of this game because most of DQB1/2…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →#21 of 2026 Completions is Dragon Quest Builders 2. This game surpassed the first and exceeded all my expectations. positive · AI labelView post →I can't believe this game made me cry MULTIPLE TIMES. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not sure why this game shows as unsupported on Steam Deck --- I've played the game through on it start to finish, and it plays FAR better than DQB1, which is listed as having partial support.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had well over 1000hrs on the switch version and I eventually switched to this version when I lost my saves on there. Game is super addicting and the competitions give you something to keep reworking towards if you like showcasing your work. The biggest gripe I have with the game is the unskippable cutscenes and the slightly excessive handholding - but it's not like you have to deal with that once you're done with the story anyway.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favorite games, hands down (except for that one chapter, iykyk) It's like minecraft but with guild lines!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →wow. If you played the first one this one is better in just about every way. if you haven't go play that one first as both games are amazing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please make DQB3 :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have this on the PS4 and loved it. Nearly completing the game. Then Sony raised the prices of Playstation Plus and I'm out. PC gaming from now on.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have to say I like the game, but you need to understand the game flow is heavily interrupted by NPCs just talking nonsense and you have to click through annoying dialogue just to get out of the locked gameplay. The monsters are fun to fight. The music is pretty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game im really enjoying it, love the colourful art style and charecter designs, the gameworld is huge and open im not to far in just finished the first island and a few quest in on the second which gives me confidence its worth playing thru to the end as its not move on and repeat the same stuff in a different environment its different with the same mechanics which keeps it fresh instead of getting stale. The game is very dialogue heavy but its quite funny so worth not skipping thru also…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my go-to comfort games when I'm bored or sad. I just wish Malroth would kiss me ;(
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was hard to get into at first but I am really glad I did, it took me over a year to really sit down and try to finish it but once I got 10 hours in I couldn't stop. The amount of charm this game has, the fact its a "continuation" of Dragon Quest 2 and the classic DQ Music makes this my favorite building game. Give this game a shot if you like 'cozy' games or DragonQuest
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have tried to go back to this game and pick it up to give it a try. It's just not user friendly, poorly setup to start. I love the design they went for, I love their chibi style, but that's the end of what I have been able to appreciate. I just don't think that the controls were ever meant to be on a computer's keyboard and they don't bother adjusting things to make it smooth and understandable. If you're on a computer, save your money.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i loved this game right up until a village (or more, objectives and quests) force you to build a prison for your friend, who everyone thinks is evil. =/
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A honestly very super charming game that lacks polish in constantly-apparent ways that a studio of this size/IP should -definitely- have better quality in.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you don't like this game, you will never understand me or my son ever again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute little game. You can get sort of wrapped up into playing it without even knowing which makes it very fun. You can either relax and play or put a lot of thought into building and such so I think different kinds of players can enjoy it however they like.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A straight upgrade from the first game, including many QoL changes that were missing in the first game, with the great addition of your own island, which becomes your canvas to build on. There are several things in the game that were annoying, like Malroth has inner voice that sometimes speaks to him and it takes FOREVER to move onto the next text, you can't skip forward. You can go take a piss in the meantime, before it switches to the next text. There are two things I straight up hated,…
