Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
Developer Funcom
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (Bokmål: Drømmefall: Den Lengste Reisen) is an adventure video game developed by Funcom for Microsoft Windows and Xbox platforms in April 2006. In 2007, a sequel entitled Dreamfall Chapters was announced, and Funcom reportedly considered the idea of a massively multiplayer online game set in The Longest Journey universe. What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 182 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,047 of 1,241 positive).
Players praise the game's compelling story and emotional depth, calling it a favorite narrative experience. [1][2][3] Some note the dated graphics and controls, but find the atmosphere and characters still engaging. [4][5][6] A few reviewers criticize the gameplay as tedious or frustrating, with poor combat and puzzles. [7][8][9]

Pros: - there are a few touching moments in the story - environments are nicely designed for the time period it was released Cons: - this isn't really a puzzle game, it's a long series of fetch quests. Lots of meaningless running back and forth for no reason - combat is so bad that I don't understand why it's even in the game. It's extremely clunky and boring, doesn't fit the genre and should have been cut from the …

This is to this day one of my favorite stories (not just games; stories in general). If you know, you know. If not: this is a second part in a trilogy that spanned 3 decades (2000, 2006 and 2016). As such, in terms of graphics and gameplay each game is somewhat representative of its era. Dreamfall in particular is a pioneer in narrative games - before the likes of Bioshock Infinite or Telltale games, it set out to …

If I had to pick the world's best video game, I'd have picked this one. I will never forget the way this game felt the first time I played it. This was the first video game that ever captured my emotions in the story - I grew to really care about the characters. It's no surprise it won game of the year <3

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is one of those games I keep coming back to over the years. It just has this vibe you don’t really find anywhere else. The whole world feels unique kind of futuristic but also mysterious and playing as Zoë just pulls you into it even more. It’s not really about crazy action or anything. It’s more the atmosphere the story the characters and that feeling of jumping between worlds that …

It's less a long journey than a long drama. And somehow, the drama is compelling enough that you keep watching scene after scene.

Players who liked Dreamfall: The Longest Journey talk about excellent storytelling and memorable characters; those who didn't talk about outdated graphics and clunky controls. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
In its second-quarter report for 2006, Funcom told investors that early sales of Dreamfall's computer version were "positive", while those of the Xbox release were "low". The company blamed this disparity on the Xbox's loss of market share to the Xbox 360. According to Funcom, revenues from Dreamfall totaled $2.64 million at the end of the second quarter, by which time roughly 300,000 copies of the game had been shipped to retailers. In its annual 2006 report, the company summarized Dreamfall's computer version as a "satisfactory" seller that drew revenues "above expectations". Sales and revenues of the Xbox release both failed to meet Funcom's forecasts. Funcom estimated 200,000 copies of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably [April Ryan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Ryan_(The_Longest_Journey)) from the Longest Journey. She was clever, empathetic, funny, and grounded. She certainly had more than enough opportunity to get annoying over the many, _many_ hours it takes to play that game but I found myself reading the journal that served as a story tracker just to see what she had to say about events. I genuinely missed her during Dreamfall. Though I had a few other favorite games with female…

positive · AI labelView post →Every second of Vanquish may have been the most joyous I've spent in a video game. Faith vanishing at the end of Dreamfall was both cathartic and dreadfully sad. The absolute crushing weight of falling in the snow in Journey - and the unparalleled uplift of the climb that followed.
positive · AI labelView post →Dreamfall Chapters is the final (?) game in The Longest Journey saga, but you don't have to play the previous games to enjoy this one (although it helps). Dreamfall Chapters is 70% off and features an angry robot called "Sh*tbot". You can't go wrong with that! store.steampowered.com/app/237850/D...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing Longest Journey this game felt disappointing. The one positive thing was there were significantly less glitches (although the one about having to hold alt+tab when a character is going through a door during cut scenes or hiding, killed me on the inside). The story just isn't as thrilling, and the constant switching between characters the closer you got to the end of the game after completing one thing felt exhausting and unneeded. I won't critique how the characters all look…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamfall picks up ten years after the events of TLJ, one of my all-time favorite games. As a female player, April Ryan was very relatable to me. Unfortunately, this game goes from a solo protagonist to a narrative split THREE ways. You begin the game and predominately play as Zoe Castillo, a young college dropout living in Casablanca and looking for renewed purpose in life. First, let me get the obvious out of the way. Her voice acting is terrible, and her accent makes no sense for someone…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Longest Journey. It’s my favorite point and click of all time. Epic, beautiful, and fun. A couple of Babel fish-level puzzles, but otherwise a steady and engaging story with a very likable lead. The much-delayed sequel, Dreamfall, tried some things and mostly failed, but was still a pretty interesting story extension. I haven’t played the last episodic entry, Dreamfall chapters, because I’m slowly working my way through the first two again first.

neutral · AI labelView post →in 2006 Dreamfall was innovative and controversial. it was a long-awaited sequel that suddenly distanced itself from the original in many ways. a frustrating move for old fans but a really smart one if you look at it from a legacy standpoint. The Longest Journey (1999) was left behind in history, but Dreamfall stayed with us much longer. why did that happen? i guess the game was pretty cinematic, which was especially cool in 2006, with good music, style, a feel-good mood and a very attractive…

neutral · AI labelView post →Interminable. Abysmal gameplay. What puzzles exist are frequently obtuse. Overall the writing does a poor job telling what seems to be a well conceived story. Pacing and editing issues abound. Excellent voice acting. The visuals stand up 15 years later, and the settings are varied and atmospheric while thin. Unless you're really committed to the story of The Longest Journey, I can't recommend this to a modern player

It’s surely a game that won’t be for everyone, but I loved every minute of it. There was funny dialogue, a real sense of fantasy, and so many memorable characters. I loved interacting with every NPC and exploring everything to the fullest. Zoe was also a fantastic protagonist, and I really loved following her story. I’m honestly sad games like this aren’t being made anymore. But let’s face it, there are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my favorite games ever, y'all. Highly recommend! (Disclaimer that while this game is excellent on its own, bits of the story will be way more meaningful if you play The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey first, which are both old-school point-and-click adventure games)
positive · AI labelView post →On the plus side - Dreamfall has mostly wonderful characters and a very good story with one of my favorite settings ever imagined for a video game. The graphics also hold up pretty well for being nearly twenty years old. But my friends, it is 2024. We don't have to do this anymore. We don't have to pretend that camera setups and mechanics like this were ever worth slogging through just for a good story. Sure, back in 2006 we didn't have anything better. Back in that distant and cold past we…

positive · AI labelView post →Firstly I will recommend the game to people who are interested in the trilogy, even tho I haven't played the last game yet. But as a standalone, this game is really bad and this is why I am giving it a thumbs down. Let's start! Let's take all the goods of the first game The Longest Journey (TLJ) and throw all of it away, besides partly the story part. Let's take all the bad things of TLJ and keep it, additionally adding extremely annoying gameplay elements. I want to mention, I played through…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unpopular opinion but this game was my favorite in the trilogy. The first one had too many convoluted puzzles, the third game's plot and pacing was a mess. This was a nice balance. Gameplay of Dreamfall was kinda easy but I enjoyed the story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamfall is a bit of a mess. I've played the original title in the series (called "The Longest Journey") twice now, and I loved the world and story in that game, and it was a classical point-and-click. Meanwhile, Dreamfall fails in almost every area to live up to its predecessor. Let's start off with the story, the most important aspect of both games. The original game was a lengthy exploration between a scientific world and a magical world, with decently-sized chapters set in each, allowing…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know this game has it's fanbase, but as someone who has no nostalgia for this series this is an abysmal disappointment. I really enjoyed The Longest Journey and was surprised by how well it holds up. Dreamfall however steps away from being a point-&-click and instead becomes some sort of "action" adventure instead. Yes, this game has combat and stealth sections. Yes, unfortunately, they do suck. No, they are not the majority of the gameplay. That last part seems like a positive, but sadly…

The game was made in an era when everyone was moving away from classic point and click mechanics to characters in a 3D world. There are also frustrating stealth and combat sections which don't really fit in with…

For me, it could not be played without a good, comprehensive walkthrough. I felt somewhat depressed at the end because of the fate of the game principals, but there is plenty of room left for a sequel to redeem the story. The good features of the game are the unlimited number of saves and the reload after a fatal error of one of the characters. I made much use of the saves and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, similar to Syberia. Beautiful artwork, good story. My game time almost 13 hours. You play as two female protagonists and also a male gladiator type. Lots of dying, which I hate, and running around madly with just a few seconds before you are attacked and killed. Have to escape from monsters, robotic spiders, evil twins, all determined to kill you. I had to turn off the overly dramatic music at times just to get through the nerve-wracking situations.

After about 6 years, Ragnar decided to change the style of the game a little: The biggest minus is that the game's controls have changed. The good old point and click was replaced by some kind of twisted console controls, however, to which I got used to during the game. After about 3-4 hours of play, I even started to like such controls. But if there's any problem with the controls, All these…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you -really- love The Longest Journey, just pretend the story remains incomplete after the first game. Nothing after that feels like it belongs to the same world. This game is a large and confused mess, and I would seriously recommend watching a youtube/other kind of summary instead of playing it for yourself, IF you can find somebody who has already suffered that much on the behalf of others.

neutral · AI labelView post →Yeah Dreamfall was a much darker game in setting and themes, and I remember that while the protagonist tried some humor here and there it was just not as rewarding to interact with certain impractical things or be goofy like you could with April. April's journal was also worth reading for some funny summaries of events, but Zoe's was generally pretty dry and more pragmatic.

We hear about a mystery that the girl's friend is involved in, but don't get any real details. The second region is ugly... intentionally ugly. It's a hobo neighborhood.
