What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 233 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (10,767 of 13,611 positive).
Players praise the game's blend of 4X and RTS elements, calling it a satisfying midpoint between the genres. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the pacing slow and the combat uninteresting, comparing it to a real-time board game. [4][5][6] Several players note technical issues like save corruption and a memory bug that causes crashes. [7][8]

In late 2024 a game patch released with a new memory/framerate bug that triggers when zooming in and out between the different map layers. After zooming in and out a few times the game slows down, freezes, and eventually crashes. This is a well known issue and the fact that A FULL YEAR later this game-breaking bug has still not been addressed is absolutely mind-boggling. Great game overall, would love to be able to …

Doesn't quite scratch my itch. Everything just seems so painstakingly drawn out and frustrating. It feels like a Euro style board game in that it seems like it's built around making victory so painstaking, that nobody will be able to outpace their opponents to such a degree that one player dominates. Instead, it feels like you need to put in half an hour to gain the sort of soft cap in size, queue up your research, …

Arrakis: The Planet That Hates You One of the first things you’ll notice is that the world itself feels alive. The whole planet is this huge desert filled with dangerous weather, rough terrain, and giant sandworms that want to eat everything. The map is split into regions with little villages, spice fields, and resources you can take over. But the environment isn’t just for show—it affects almost everything you do. …

Are you playing classic Dune RTS, or Stellaris/ Civ? It's in the sweet spot which Northgard began to carve out, but does it much, much better. Addictive, satisfying, polished, respectful of what came before it. Fans of RTS and fans of Dune (games, book or film) will not be disappointed

A beautiful, slow-motion desert crawl. Recommended Dune: Spice Wars is an impressive hybrid of 4X and RTS that captures the "vibe" of Arrakis perfectly. The art style is gorgeous, and the way it integrates politics and espionage alongside traditional combat makes you feel like a true House leader. However, the pacing is a bit of an acquired taste—it’s a game of long stretches of silence punctuated by brief moments …

Dune: Spice Wars sits at 68% positive across 249 opinionated reactions from 4 sources. Fresh or rotten — where do you land?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The full release of Dune: Spice Wars received "mixed or average reviews" according to review aggregator, Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received strong approval, being recommended by 67% of critics. While finding the AI inept, IGN enjoyed the changes to water management from early access, "Running a surplus of water, though, increases both the maximum supplies your units can carry and their recharge speed at friendly settlements, so keeping your industrial operations minimal translates into freer movement across the planet". PC Gamer wrote that the game did a poor job capturing the nuances of the Dune universe with its RTS trappings, "Its Byzantine…

neutral · AI labelView post →Shouts to the Dune Awakening devs for adding a wildly customisable new single-player mode where you can add or remove as much friction as you want from all aspects of the game. So if you want to just do cool Dune stuff and see the story without any MMO-type busywork you can.
positive · AI labelView post →So the new Dune Awakening game is a shooter? That's what I took away from the footage of the game I just watched. A Dune focused on projectile weapons feels extremely wrong. Unless I'm shooting tiny sandworms at my enemies, but that doesn't seem to be the case here

positive · AI labelView post →I forgot to link this as part of the Dune thread from earlier: my overall piece of favourite music from the game. It's one unique to the Commodore Amiga version, and is one of only a few tracks in the game. Much smaller OST than the DOS version. But Ecolove does a lot of heavy lifting.

The strategic war management is totally useless, the battles are boring and predictable. This game could be enjoyable if it were a little more elaborate, but it certainly doesn't deserve to be called “Dune”; it's an insult to the franchise. A special power-up that is easy to obtain is enough to become unstoppable; the combat strategy is…

There is literally nothing interesting or captivating about the mechanics that are supposed to make this game stand out from all the similar strategy games. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The AI in this game is borderline BRAINDEAD. I don't understand why this game has such a high rating. The AI seem to be so incredibly stupid that it will often and happily, suicide it's units into your army within MELEE range without even attacking back. Bonus points if this happens while attacking one of their cities as the AI will give you a performative dance of running around in circles in an attempt to minimize how much damage their units recieve without fighting back at all. On occasion,…

neutral · AI labelView post →The question you should ask yourself with these kinds of games is: Would the game be any good if you removed everything unique to Dune? Is Dune the only reason why this game is appealing? In my opinion, this is a 5/10 game if you ignore all the DUNE IP. The gameplay feels sluggish and boring. The game is also unbalanced in quite a few areas, and would have benefited from more playtesting and polish. That said, as a fan of Dune, this game gets a 7/10 after taking the setting into…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dune: Imperium Uprising. Some say it's the best board game ever made. Rhombus the Pomeranian agrees.
neutral · AI labelView post →Be very careful. The saving on this game is quite erratic. It will save a few times and then suddenly you will find a number of save files have been corrupted and if you try to reload them the game simply crashes dumping you out. It is not clear why this happens and how you can make sure it saves cleanly as there is no sign that any save is corrupted until you load it up. It is not clear how this problem can be overcome/avoided. I guess I have to wait for a patch.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun, but has a steep learning curve. The game is a macro-level strategy game, much more focused on managing your resources and scouting than micro-managing real time unit combat. I watched a lot of Youtube gameplay videos before buying or playing, and I'm glad I did. The game has a steep learning curve and is not intuitive. I love it, but if I had played without learning from experienced players it would have been frustrating - even on the lowest difficulty. The game has five ways to win.…
