What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 171 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (1,113 of 1,674 positive).
Players praise the game's customization and strategic battles, but many criticize the poor PC port. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note it is superior to Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires in gameplay and content. [4][5][6] Controller issues and lack of English audio are common complaints among negative reviews. [3][7][8]

They didn't port this game properly. If you play on controller, the controls literally change as you play, and what inevitably happens is you end up pressing a button that will close the game entirely. It's very bizarre. Also KOEI sucks for not caring to produce English dubs anymore.

Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires (DW8E) isn't a bad game by any means, but it is a fine example of Koei Tecmo's monetization that's been annoying me over the years. Like Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete Edition (DW8XLCE), unfortunately, DW8E is a compromised port which uses Playstation 3 textures (instead of Playstation 4) and therefore, looks worse than its console counterpart. It also shares some other …

TL;DR: Despite being the older Empires game, this is the superior title. It plays like an older warriors title. That out of the way, let me clarify this about the game: It is an old title, and it shows. But unlike its sequel/downgrade in DW9R, this does right what that game does wrong. Walk with me and we'll discuss the pros and cons. Pros 01. The game plays like a Warriors title. This may not seem like something …

This is my favourite Dynasty Warriors game. The Empires strategy system is a downgrade from 7 but the gameplay is alot better. This game's outstanding feature is it's customisation. You can create your own officers, scenarios, and easily share them around and download other people's. BUT if the PC port was better (atleast on Warriors Orochi 3's level where you can make it 1440p and change the confirm button) i would …

Honestly, I've always loved the Empires games far more than I like the mainline series, and this title demonstrates exactly why. If you like making up your own characters, or you run D&D games, or you have any original characters of any kind, this is a wonderful place to take them. Commendable levels of customization (moreso than DW9E's pared-down system) and a depth of creation that few games allow. Even if it's …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's hard to give this a thumbs up recommendation, but between DW8Empires and DW9Empires, you're better off sticking with 8 Empires. It's actually wild just how much was getting taken out when it came to the Empires franchise. Considering that when 6 Empires came out, you had all of the sound tracks from every single Dynasty Warriors game up to 6. Independent officer were much more fleshed out and gave you an option and reason for continuing on being an independent officer compared to joining…

I love this game with a passion, but please just get it on console and not on pc. controls make no sense and are clunky, graphics are somehow WORSE, and I couldnt even get it to register a controller. 2/10, the port killed it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been waiting for this game to be on sale on Steam all year. I bought half of the DLCs as I was excited they were all finally on sale. I have the PS4 and Vita versions of this game and wanted to triple dip on Steam as it was just a download away (my other consoles are in storage). I really wanted to get that DW8 Empires itch scratched and this game had such good customization which I love. And love that good old hack 'n slash gameplay. Unfortunately I've had various issues with the Steam…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is as far as i am concerned the last Empires game that was ever released in the Dynasty Warriors series. It is also just a fun game, been playing this for years off and on and it is fantastic, that being said, you can see where all the cracks are showing in the foundations of Koei Tecmo with this game. The game has a major difficulty increase that on the surface is almost reminiscent of that you would see in one of the PS2 era games but far worse in a way that would lay the foundations for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had to return the game. After several hours of troubleshooting, I was unable to make the game acknowledge any controllers(including Xbox) I have tried to play with. When it says "Partial Controller Support," I don't know to what extent it means partial because my experience was that there was no controller support. I'm not going to play a game designed for a game pad with a keyboard. If you're okay with that, go ahead and find out if the game's worth playing for yourself.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Saw some reviews warning about the controls being poor, figured I'd be able to remap them or something or that they wouldn't be that bad. I was wrong. They are that bad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game deserves a lot more love than it's getting. Amazing game, and the negative reviews are most likely because of the lack of English Audio. With English subtitles already there, it's not much of a problem for me. As for the gameplay and the OSTs, it's a really good game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →terrible, controller doesnt even work properly
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man i really wish i could play Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Dynasty Warriors, more importantly I love Empires series, but I just can't recommend this game... sure it's cheap on discount, but with so many DLCs and no season pass? they're just desperate to get money from this old game. I can run the game well, no crashes, but I just can't get over the keyboard prompt on my screen while I'm using controller. it's a big no no for me. and unlike some other games, you can't change the prompt button at all.... really annoying...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All around sloppy PC port. Without finding a working controller configuration, certain button combinations will trigger a soft reset back to the menu. On top of that, I don't have the time nor energy to iterate on a bunch of controller configs to find the one that works. Also there's no option in the hacked together settings window for common monitor resolutions >1080 so you'll probably have to dig through an .ini to find it. I get that it's a 10 year old game but games made in 2015 were…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →is it a good game? yes. Is it a good port/does it run well on PC? no. controllers suck, and its the PS3 version, not PS4. you need to use an emulator or some bs to get a controller to register, and its very clunky. but the game itself? wonderful, one of my favorites.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game. Honestly still better than 9 in many aspects. Though yes the port is bad so you will have to go in and remap your controller to fit the game

neutral · AI labelView post →The reviews weren't kidding, the game not only had weird controller support, it also showed the keyboard glyphs instead of controller which made it tough. If they come out with a DX version or something at some point I'll give it a try because Samurai Warriors 4 DX plays perfectly

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tried like 10 minutes of Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires and it was the most overwhelming video game experience of my life Seriously, this tops firing up Baldur's Gate with the book-sized manual for the first time. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a long time Koei musou games, I can't quite recommend this game or perhaps other Koei games. Yes, there are features that makes the game interesting (Strategems, relationships, making baby with Lu Bu) but it's just the same thing over and over again but no english Dub which as a returning player for a decade, the japanese va doesn't sit right with me. Badly ported and the game looks pretty dated, they don't even try to remastered it at least. The controller is a mess but can be fixed. It's…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally getting Odin Sphere Leifthrasir I had no idea I could just, download it. Didn't realize how much PS3 stuff I had access to I thought it'd be harder to work but that was just because the Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires stuff was wonky
neutral · AI labelView post →I love dynasty warriors but the way they did this is messed up cant use a controller without 10 levels of heck. graphics are so glitchy its terrible.the game play is freezy ALOT more than not.i was so dissappointed in this version. and no english voice overs has always been a down side but easily over looked with amazing gameplay and battles. This one has none of the good parts and all the bad even some i didnt know existed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy shit, I really like Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires But I didn't really enjoy this era of DW games like, normally? DW 8 Empires, amongst other things, makes the battles shorter and more strategic. Wanna shortcut to the boss and blitz with careful use of stratagems? Ok you can do that!
positive · AI labelView post →The game has far too many problems if your a fan on controller input. I went out to remap the entire button layout to play the game, but because I changed the button layout the game refuses to start so I can either try learning how to play a badly mapped game or not be able to play it with a controller at all. Even on discount the amount of work needed to try and make it playable isn't worth it and the problems obviously are never going to be fixed with a patch.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has this game grown or become better overtime? No, it is quite outdated. But I only know one other game that can satisfy this niche and that is Samurai Warriors 4 empires. This game allows you create armies of people with different weapons and set them free in the world to take over China.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my comfort game. Just mindless fun. Totally recommend.

neutral · AI labelView post →Why is "X" back and "Y" confirm on an xbox controller?! Tried to edit the controller scheme through Steam and it just broke everything. Complete ass. I've played this a TON PS4 and it's a great game on there, just a complete mess of a PC port.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires is great if you enjoy being a demigod who massacres thousands of soldiers while your horse judges you for doing literally everything wrong. I’ve conquered three kingdoms before breakfast, invented new combos by accident, and somehow my generals now worship me like I’m some kind of red-haired god. 10/10 would make peasants fear my e-sword again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Copied from my post In General Discussions: It feels nice to revisit this game after not having played it since ps4 days. I have been through alot of the ups and downs of Dynasty Warriors since 4 xtreme legends. I have played the strike force titles and am a fan of the samurai warriors and warriors orochi variants. Now im sure they don’t read these at koei but id still like to say that a new design isn’t a bad idea but don’t forget this portion of the series. I haven’t played 9 or its variants…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All these positive reviews? Did you all not have any problems with controller on this game? It was basically unplayable on ps4 controller. delayed commands, R1/L1 were broken. I ended up getting a refund because I was not gonna be a keyboard warrior gamer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i love this game and series so much, it's probably the nostalgia talking but i never have a bad time playing this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →better than 9 at most things
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game suffers from severe technical issues on my PC. The quick save feature does not work properly. Every time I press the quick save button, the game takes me back to the main menu, and all of my progress is lost. I then tried using manual saves instead, but after playing for about four hours, the game crashed. When I relaunched it, all of my progress from those four hours was gone. I checked my save files and found that my last save should have been at 10:54 PM, but the game had only…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the worst ports I've ever seen. Doesn't show the correct inputs when using controller, doesn't go higher than 1080p so have fun with that if we're on a 1440p monitor or higher, and half the time it completely ignores my inputs, making the game borderline unplayable. Frankly ridiculous, given how much they're charging for this game, especially for the DLCs. Koei could at least pretend to have any respect for their consumers.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly one of my favorite Dynasty Warriors Empires games. The Scenario Editor and empire modes are great in this and the create a character has an awesome selection of parts, enough to make most any character. It also runs on a computer that isn't the top of the line.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →how do you play a game that doesnt read inputs from your keyboard nor controller? it downloaded while i was sleeping and I woke up with 3 hours on record. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →despite being tagged as "unknown" for steam deck, it works out of the box. controller support isn't great because you just get keyboard glyphs and are kind of left to guess which button does what. which is crazy because this game came out on console, so the lack of full controller support is weird. with that said, i didn't have a super fun time playing this. i love Warriors games in general, but had never tried an empires title. it's a weird mix between warriors gameplay and grand strategy,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My first game in the Empires sub-series, played all the others. I got really addicted to this one and I guess you can consider me a convert. I've heard the port isn't good and yeah Koei can be inconsistent when it comes to PC stuff but this game ran perfectly on a steam deck, 60fps no problem. I loved making my own characters and acting out historical fan fiction. Apparently 7 is even better than this one, more complex, so I'll have to try that one next.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires is a distinctive entry in the long-running musou franchise by Koei Tecmo, blending the series’ signature hack-and-slash combat with a more strategic layer of empire-building, diplomacy, and character management. Building on the content and mechanics introduced in Dynasty Warriors 8, this Empires variant shifts the focus from linear battlefield campaigns to a sandbox-style experience where players can rise through the ranks of ancient China, seize power, or forge their…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After origins, I wanted to try empires. Seems like the type of game I would love. But the controls really kill it for me. I dont have a controller, prefer just keyboard stuff. Thats how I played origins and it felt great. This is an old game, and the key bindings really shows. My hope is that they make a DW origins empire or something, cause I would play the heck out of that.
