The seemingly simplistic nature of this game wears off quick, and this game ends up lasting far longer than it needs to be. It's okay for a short while, but gets boring quick and hardly attempts to stay exciting. The worst part is how finicky the controls can be. Lots of times you'll find yourself trying to duck down behind cover and your character simply won't respond to the control. Also, aiming the slingshot can …

The artwork and direction have a gentle charm that leaves a strong impression. Paired with well-crafted, non-violent stealth gameplay, the Western setting unfolds as a quiet story of growth.

I liked this game quite a bit. The non-violent stealthing is casual and fun. The cartoony art style is pretty well done, especially the cut scenes. And the spaghetti western setting is new and refreshing (at least for me). There are unfortunately still some bugs that need to be fixed, but it's otherwise very enjoyable. 7/10

A humdrum hide and seek Introduction 🔸What comes to your mind when you hear Spaghetti Western? Saloons filled with cowboys breaking their necks while drinking? Dramatic horseback ridings? Tense shootouts between lawmen and bandits? Well, El Hijo is none of them. Instead, it tells the revenge tale of a six-year-old boy, mischievously and swiftly sneaking past monks, bandits, and lawmen. Separated from his mother, the unnamed son escapes the monastery he unwillingly lives in and set out on a…

Update: 22nd December, patch 1.0.1. Controls are still just slightly finicky, but they've definitely been solidly improved. I still think the price is a bit too much, but it deserves a recommended now. A very casual, charming, non-violent stealth game about a young boy, El Hijo, trying to find his mother after their farm gets torched by outlaws and she leaves him in the monastery. In a true mischevious spirit, and probably fed up with the monks, El Hijo decides to bust out and go look for her.…

So I think this might be my first ever review: I'm moved to write it by the pleasure of playing this game for a couple of hours. The art, level design, art direction, and music are exceptional. There's a consistent visual and auditory aesthetic which really works to tell the story through the characters, and the game oozes atmosphere. It's gorgeous. Gameplay wise it's an excellent combination of simple and complex: the premise is fairly straightforward; sneak around obstacles (monks in the…

Really strong aesthetic, but the AI and "game feel" isn't there. 30 minutes in and the gameplay is already incredibly repetitive and mundane. Also, as the other reviews have mentioned there are bugs for sure even early on. I got softlocked twice in my short playtime. Once while opening a hatch on the first level, and then again after talking to the first child. For 20$ you could also get "Metal Gear Solid V - Phantom Pain" or "Ground Zero", as well as "Inside", And I would suggest you do that…

El Hijo is a top-down stealth game that sees you playing as a young boy set upon reuniting with his mother. Taking place in the wild west, you must sneak your way past bandits and survive the harshness of your environment. That, and tackle with the game's many technical issues. The biggest problem with El Hijo is that it feels like a constant battle to play. Its controls are wonky and unresponsive, which is not exactly good when you need to react to situations quickly. Its stealth mechanics…

A nice attempt at a smaller scale stealth experience....marred by clunky controls and finicky precision issues. The visuals are lovely and I enjoyed the wild west setting. But, there were issues with unresponsive controls and with aiming the slingshot. There is really only one path through each level, which makes it fruitless to try and use your limited weapons in creative ways. Additionally, while I won't spoil the last level, the gameplay deviates tremendously from the preceding 28 levels…

Ultimately, I recommend this game, but with some caveats. I learned about this game in the desperados III discord, but gameplay-wise, those two don't have much in common. Somewhat easy stealth game (took me about 6 hours to clear it while inspiring all the children) with a handful more difficult spots. You'll rarely have to worry about finding a spot to hide or wondering how to get through a corridor that has 5 patrolling bandits with intersecting routes. All levels are about getting to the…

I really want to like this game. It's pretty low-key and looks amazing. It's a great premise storywise, and the gameplay is right up my alley too. But in an hour of playing, I've encountered three bugs that left me frozen so that I had to restart the level. There are enough save points where this isn't too bad on its own; however, the controls and movement seemed "sticky" or unpolished, where I couldn't always tell if the problem was me, the hardware, or the game. And hey, I'm not always great…

I wanted to love this game, key word...wanted...I played for about 30 minutes - and was caught by 3 bugs right in the beginning - forcing me to restart each time. The game play became very repetitive quickly, and I found myself struggling to want to continue, but mainly not caring about the cute lil character. Perhaps things change/get more exciting as the game goes on, but sadly I just couldnt find it in me to keep playing. "It’s like my aunt, not very interesting, but tries really hard" A…

Clunky and buggy from the beginning. 2mn in game struggling with approximate controls and already soft locked at the first trap to open. Then a kid to interact with another couple of mn later and the camera keep locked on the zoom in automated for the occasion. Then more. 25mn in game and I already feel continuing it, is the challenge. Just don't buy is my recommendation.

This really is the type of game I love, but this is just so full of bugs, that it is unplayable. First bug I encountered was when I needed to crouch at the scare crows. It just did not want to crouch. Then, after a restart it worked. Second bug was when I needed to open the hatch to go to the second level. It opened, but the character did not go in. I was stuck there and pressing "E" just resulted in a sigh from the character. Another restart. The third bug, in level 2, was when I inspired the…

Stealth mechanics is simplistic, instructions are sometimes unclear. Considering the game’s price $19.99 for just 3.5-4 hours of gameplay with a handful of slide-show cutscenes, it feels expensive. I finished the Monastery area, about 1/3 of the full game before I stopped. Normally I prefer to complete a game, but here the sneaking methods are repetitive and limited. The boy can throw rocks to distract guards at first, later swapping to a noise-making toy, but it functions identically aside…

It's rather on the easy side but you'll encounter new obstacles and gadgets quite regularly and getting to switch to another character every once in a while also helps keeping the gameplay fresh. El Hijo is a beautiful, quirky, and immersive stealthy puzzle adventure game. The story was clever and engaging, with the puzzles ranging from simple to quite challenging. I got stuck in a few places, due to my own inability to solve the puzzles as opposed to being any issue with the game. The game was far larger than I expected, having come in to the game expecting a short story, I was pleasantly surprised to see just how many levels there were to be played through.

I played about an hour last night and had a lot of fun. The art style is really impressive and the stealth so far has been challenging while also remaining low stress (lots of places to hide and plan your next move, as opposed to the sort of stealth game where you're never "safe"). Looking forward to see how it develops as levels progress, but already enjoying my time enough to give it a solid recommendation!

A simple and fairly easy stealth game. Most areas (puzzles) are not too hard and I could see this is geared towards a younger player. A very kid/family orientated game. Not really any violence but there are places where children are shown in a unpleasant environment. In the end, you are inspiring these kids and freeing them from said hardships. Graphics are cute and pleasant. Game play is straight-forward. Controls are basic and easy to learn/use. Music is very nice and fits well with the game.…

While I enjoyed the game, sometimes the maps feel too crowded, and maybe too open to know the right way, maybe allowing for unlimited roam with the bird watch mode would ease that confusion. Sometimes one of the far enemies will spot you even out of their respective zones, and that frustrates as a player. El Hijo is a nice little stealth game. It falls into the same territory as Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3, though given a more charming facade and a more casual friendly difficulty. The game has 69 levels, starting out short and getting longer and more involved as you progress. The puzzles are not too hard, but still challenging in some parts. I would definetly say it's more based for younger adults but not for kids, since they won't understand the puzzlemechanics most probably. Beautiful game... Everything i expected it to be. Only downside is a lot of bugs which force me to restart levels, especially the longer levels. Not a deal breaker for me though, the good outweighs the bad easily.

I really enjoyed the game. The atmosphere and the story was pleasant and the pacifistic gameplay was delightful. The negative was the AI of the bad guys, it was easy to trick them and their field of view sometimes did not made sense. Although this problem, it was a great expirience!

El Hijo – A Wild West Tale is an isometric-view, real-time tactics stealth game, especially suited for kids, where you have to help a little boy to find his mother unseen by various opponents/villains. No real story or instruction? It wasn't really shown why we were doing things.... I finished the game in 13 hours.... and don't feel it is replayable. Controls were really janky, really cumbersome tbh. I 100% prefer Shadow Gambit and Shadow Tactics instead.

Had to force myself through the first half of this game. Not planning to play through the second half. It's a lot of the same puzzle with different faces.

Underrated game. It reminds me Assassin's Creed Chronicles but better. More various, more ways to hide, to distract, to escape. A little like Desperados but way easier. Also I don't get all the complains about controls. They are not so bad, I used to them very quickly. And there is an autosave every 2 or 3 moves, so even if you have feet instead of hands you don't have so much to redo.

Great artstyle and soundtrack, decent gameplay that lacks some depth. The levels keep getting better the more you progress.
