What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (616 of 826 positive).
Players describe Elderand as a basic, competent Metroidvania that doesn't innovate but is enjoyable for genre fans. [1][2][3] Some reviewers praise the combat as weighty and deliberate, while others find it janky and frustrating. [4][5][6] Several players note the game is short, with a 10-15 hour playtime, and lacks replay value. [7][8][9]

The game is really tedious for a metroidvania. Lots of grinding to upgrade your items and most of the required items are rare that become uncommon with a specific item that increases drop rates. There are also a ton of items that are basically reskins of each other with minor differences stat wise. My biggest complaint is that enemies do contact damage (which shields dont block) and that your hits dont interrupt …

Solid 5/10. Game is just ok. After finishing the "True Ending" I have no desire to replay the game ever again and attempt to get other endings. The controls are really janky and it is unfortunate that devs never addressed players feedback. The good - artwork and soundtrack are both great. Story is non existent which is not that important for this genre of games. The bad - combat is really janky. In the end only few …

Recommending this one but with caveats. Elderand is a 10-12 hour 'grimdark' aRPG Metroidvania with very deliberate combat - heavy swings that you commit to, where positioning, anticipation, and timing all play a role. It's not terribly challenging but there's plentiful tension as you scout for the next save room, conserve healing potions, etc. Bosses will usually kill you 3-5 times as you get the hang of them, …

It's alright. Seriously though, it's a pretty basic Metroidvania, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It has all the common traits of the genre and isn't breaking new ground but is still a fun, quick title to play. I 100% the achievements in 19 hours and probably could have done it faster if I used a guide. The main gripe I have w this game is the map system. It's 2023, being able to pin locations on the map to …

Solid, basic, Metroidvania that doesn't rival titles like Hollow Knight, but is great in its own way. Combat is fun and engaging, exploration is fantastic in a mostly non-linear fashion, which is honestly quite rare in a genre that is supposed to have non-linearity.

60 of 202 · most liked first"Metroidvania" is stretching it a bit for Elderand. There are only a handful of progression abilities to get, which mostly amount to jumping better, and the world is laid out largely horizontally. If you're looking for a vast unlocking world with a lot of secrets to find, this one may not satisfy you. It's better taken as a straight action RPG, though to be honest, the RPG elements aren't very in-depth either. Character growth is extremely basic, there's not a huge variety of equipment to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hoo boy. I went into this game expecting a decent souls-like metroidvania and the truth is that this game functionally succeeds at being that. You explore a map, level up your character, gain loot, and fight difficult enemies, all as expected. However, when it comes down to all of the nuances and details of the game, all I can think of are negatives. Right off the bat, the combat is really bad. Dodging does not give invincibility, there is no parry mechanic, and melee combat is extremely…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just beat Elderand. I played it exceedingly slow according to How Long To Beat, but I'm not the best at the purposeful combat that seems to be have really taken off in these kinds of games. Also I was surprised that it was made with Unity and after the news today I hope that studio ends up ok if they actually go through with the proposed revenue scheme. I played it on Steam Deck and it ran worse than I would've expected. Frame drops and stuttering happened whenever a lot was on screen unless…
positive · AI labelView post →Steam Deck Note - Works completly fine on the deck with no issues. So if steam allowed a "middle" choice, this game would get it. It is not a bad game, but its not a great game. The reason I give it a tumbs down is it just doesn't offer enough of anything to pick it over the mutlitude of alternative options out there. If you really like this style of game and just want another one to play, this will suffice. If you are looking for something special, unfortunetly, look somewhere else.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Elderand is a Castlevania like game. What's good: - The animations are very good. - There are many maps to explore and it's interesting to see the differences. - There are many weapons to experiment, although I did use most often the basic sword and shield. Problems: - It's very slow. You have to commit to anything you do because there's no way to fix it afterwards. For example, if you attack you won't have time to switch to defense or dash. - The problem above makes enemies and bosses…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my partner's review who played it through Family Sharing: 2/10 I think the art and color design are wonderful. Everything else is so disappointing and obnoxious, imo. This game was a huge waste of time and if I wasn't OCD, I would not have finished it after realizing the following: Enemies are damage sponges, and many enemies or bosses are simply made difficult because they are in the air, and your character cannot easily hit at the top of his jump, and so combat is a slog. Even at…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game should be a metroidvania with souls like mechanics, but in typical soulslike the enemies respawn just when you rest at the bonfire or die, here they respawn always and I mean ALWAYS. It’s enough to come back to same place without exiting from the area to see that it’s populated again by the same enemies. Also whenever you die you lose all the equipment you got after the bonfire, so you have to repeat, reopen the same chests again and again just to take back the items you lost. Very…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When a metroidvania lacks compelling unlocks or exploration, and when soulslike difficulty lacks interesting ideas. That's more or less how I felt when I finished this game. Nothing about it stood out as particularly good, but plenty stood out as bad. First, this game is really tiny for a metroidvania, and there are almost no unlockable abilities. The abilities you DO unlock are also the most bog standard you can imagine. Double Jump, Air Dash, and finally a swing hook with a hard…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright, I think I've played enough and I don't want to play more. I'm getting way too little dopamine from this and I can't recommend it. The game feels very dated due to the design of its map and its save system. The combat is miserable and somehow worse than souldiers. The game has some good things going for it: For example, there is actual non-linear exploration in it unlike in 9 years of linearity and the performance is excellent thanks to a VERY competent unity programmer in the dev team.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun metroidvania with a reasonable enough challenge, but has a crap story with a naff ending that is both a slap in the face, and takes a turn that seemingly comes from out of nowhere. It looks pretty and I'd say it's got the best combat of this type of game. On the other hand: there are so many examples of this genre (combat, platforming and exploration) available, and Elderand never truly excels compared to the others. It's satisfying, but no more than that if you want innovation, or are…

This mobile app is a ripoff of Castlevania and other such platformers, only worse. You jump around, hack and slash, and then go wash your eyes to try get rid of the jaggy,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me preface this with I have played a large amount of metroidvanias. This one has very unfair bosses and enemies in general. The enemies are to the point that I would rather tank damage and walk through a crowd and use healing potions than fight. I am by no means under leveled, and there is even a boss that spawns one shot-able enemies constantly that level you up that I may have abused a little, and they are still tanky. For bosses, they have arenas that go past your screen and most of them…

Cool look and good sound, just can't get by the ridiculousness of the artificial difficulty here. Save your money and play deadcells
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish this game was longer because I had SO MUCH fun finishing it entirely! The system is awesome, the arts and the ambiance is spot on with an incredible soundtrack! I do recommend it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game doesn't allow you to change the keybinding for menu functions, so regardless of how you change your keys, menu buttons are the same (escape to cancel and enter to confirm). That's an automatic NO from me. Cons: - No autosave when resting - Movement is very rigid - Rigid movement + clunky combat + contact damage = over reliance on jumping attacks - Every single enemy is faster than you. MUCH faster. - Part of the clunky controls issues, if you are looking in a direction (let's say…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoy being totally overregulated, then this game is for you. Everything in this game feels so restrictive: Lack of animation cancel and input timing sucks. Press attack once, you are frozen for half an eternity - press it twice and you start to puke. Every enemy has to be attacked a certain way. So this game is either braindead easy or impossible to play, feels really slow, counterintuitive, imprisoning. If you like cutting trees with a butter knife, pooping with your pants on or…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was a decent game, but it's a fairly short game at around only 15 hours for most to 100% this game. I found most of the bosses in the game fairly easy. I beat the end boss on my 2nd try, for example. I also found it quite grindy, as I felt it necessary to farm materials to upgrade weapons.. something that definitely ate up a few hours of my entire gameplay. Graphics are good, sound is good.. mechanics are alright. I'd say buy this on a deep sale, though, as the value of this one is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Elderand is not a good game. It's not a bad game either, but just boring. It is barely a Metroidvania, with a few movement powers sprinkled into an otherwise mostly-horizontal slog through enemy after enemy. The level design isn't very interesting. Having consumable healing items with a low capacity that drop infrequently from vases is just tedious; if you run out you either switch zones back and forth breaking pots to grind them or teleport back to the vendor to buy more. There's a reason why…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's okay, 7/10. If you are a fan of the genre and in desperate search of another MV fix, I'd recommend it - but don't expect too much. A few things why I can't rate it better: - with just 10 hours to beat the game, it could have had a bit more content - I could only reach the "bad ending", and I have no clue how to get the real ending. There is still one type of obstacle that I don't know how to clear (97% map exploration though). It doesn't help that the map won't show you which "points of…

When I hit the attack button Character doesn't move or cancel motion is not available. it makes me feel this game is very old school style. When I met a first difficult monster was Lizard man. They attack too fast without notice. I think this game is not user friendly, not enough tutorial for the user. No automatic weapon or equip system. It is manual. sub weapon system is sucks. Not enough amount and rarely given to user. One arrow is $30, wow. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun metrovania. Does not have a ton of new ideas, but that is not what brings you to this game. Elderand plays a bit with religion, madness and a classic metrovania experience. Classic boss fights, secrets, a huge map and a ton of weapons is what makes this game fun and worth your time. Not a ton of re-play value, but this is not an expensive game, so, the trade-off is fair. Keep note that playing as a mage and assassin can be really challenging.

Pixel gfx are nice (granted, of a certain aesthetic), music is fine, good map design, and good variation of enemies and equipment. The problem is that the controls are so stiff the game is basically unplayable. I gave it the full two hours to see if I could get used to it, but as the difficulty ramps us, the fact that your character moves like a robot made of lead and doesn't have knee joints really…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I give this a dislike, not because it's bad, but because I can't put it alongside the games of its genre I genuinely recommend. It's mid. Adequate. Passable. It's response enough, plays well enough. I completed it and got all three endings. Combat is very simplistic. Stats are utterly pointless. You pick Vitality and put everything into it because it's +5 HP per point, or +1 strength/dex/intelligence, which is +1 damage. Enemies have hundreds of HP. I cannot emphasise enough how pointless…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The pixel art is awesome and is what got me to buy this game even though I read through some negative reviews. Well, they were right. This game is no fun for me. The game reminds me of quarter sucker from 90's arcades. It foregoes any and all improvents and convenience of games from the past few decades. It punishes the player's death with tediousness and wasting your time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a paint-by-numbers metroidvania with Eldritch horrors. It doesn't innovate on anything (just go with a strength build) but the game is aware of this. Personally, I'm biased toward loving this genre of gameplay and story so it was an enjoyable 7 hour experience. Elderand is competent metroidvania and I had fun throughout.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute little metroidvania, with pretty straightforward fights boss fights, but a good way to spend 10ish hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great metroidvania for a small playthrough. Doesn't offer anything brand new to the genre, but absolutely crushes the basics!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the feel of it, but it's overly difficult. I'd only recommend to people who like to struggle through a game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a fan of metroidvanias, platformers and soulslike games, this one really hit my sweet spot! It controls very fluid and has just the right amount of difficulty. Every time I encountered new enemies, I actually had to learn them instead of brute forcing it. You get just the right amount of healing. It felt perfectly balanced to me. The music fits the theme and aestethics very well too. The game doesn't let you pause the text from the story though, that could be a problem for slow readers, or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spin the wheel of sacrifice! My favorite part so far. I did not like this initially. I started 3x characters before moving past the first area. I hated that you stand still when you attack. It sucks. But then I gave it another shot and I really like it now. The attacks feel very weighty and there is decent enemy variety. The world is dark and funny and a joy to explore. I wish the combat was more fluid and that there was a bit more variety of weapons etc at the start, but once you pick up some…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's good, but it advertises itself incorrectly. This game isn't a Souls-like at all, in any way; it's 100% an Igavania of the most classic kind, in the tradition of Symphony of the Night. Once you get used to the slightly stiff controls (no action canceling!) it plays smoothly and well, and while I'm not far in the game, so far at least the encounter design is good. The graphics and music are above-par, and the writing is... adequate, at least. If you like classic Igavania games (think the GBA…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tedious and clunky gameplay, how disappointing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game deserves to be more popular. Good non-linear exploration and challenging combat. It's difficult but gives you the option to grind levels, making bosses easier to return to. I'd recommend to anyone looking for a short metroidvania.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed this game. Its your basic side-scrolling 2d action platformer with rpg elements. You can build your character for hack/slash or magic or both (I'd recommend choosing one or the other so you don't waste your upgrade points). And you can have two separate character weapon/defense profiles, so one second you can fight with a sword/shield and have specific upgrades, then with a press of the button use your bow and have other specific upgrades - upgrades are in the form of two rings…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really nice platform adventure/rpg. Doesn't try to re-invent the wheel, but everything about the game is very good. The controls are spot on, the game world is interconnected by a series of campfires where you can save the game, and restore health and potions, similar Dark Souls/Elden Ring. You can also fast travel around to all the campfires that you've discovered. There are some basic stats/skills that you can upgrade as you progress. Elderand is nothing spectacular, but it's better than…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perfectly competent. It doesn't do anything new in the genre, but what's there is done well enough. Combat is serviceable, if a bit basic. The level design is solid, movement abilities are all genre staples, graphics and music are pretty good. Not what I would recommend to get you into the genre, but if you've played all the big names in the metroidvania space and are looking for something new, this isn't a bad way to spend a dozen hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay, so 9 hours into the game. The last 3 of which were all about trying to figure out how to bridge a slightly too long gap in the forest, and/or getting through the bloody pink doors. Mainly because I've traveled everywhere I can so often that I've got it memorized. I am blocked by Pink, Pink, Pink, Pink, Long Jump, Grapple, Grapple, and Grapple. The guides and discussions are little to no help without any sort of relevant info being attached like "in the First area sanctuary", um,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Collide damage is not fun, never a good idea and speaks of lazy enemy design. Dodge is useless, block is also useless, attacks are ridiculously slow when compared to enemies. Pixel art looks nice tho. This game could've been okay. As it is, it's not particularly fun or engaging.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I swear, does no developer know how to make a good combat in a Metroidvania game? First of all, so silly that you start the game, and already getting smacked left and right from the VERY powerful enemy to begin with that is all over the place, without even getting started and getting a feel for the game and combat! Do you actually want me to farm/grind in the first 5 minutes of the game? So SILLY. What is even worse, is the devs literally screw themselves with this! The combat is very simple,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To me this game feels like a Blasphemous knockoff that doesn't really know what to do with itself. The art is great, but everything else is very bad. From the floaty controls to the ridiculously bad sound effects (picking up coins at the start made me wonder if this was a flash game), it just didn't click with me. The worst sin is that the combat feels far too simplistic and that there's just no room for experimentation. There are better metroidvanias to spend your time on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wish I could give this a neutral review, but you know how it goes. Unfortunately, this game does not bring enough on the table to stand out. The combat leaves a lot to be desired, there's barely any exploration for a metroidvania, and even the story is poorly written. If you're DESPERATE to play yet another game in this genre then go for it, but there is simply no reason to go for this over anything else that's out in the market right now.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not recommanded if you're looking for a Salt & Sanctuary-like Dodge does not interrupt the attacking animation which is quite long. Game does not feel polished, sometimes it looks like you're running towards a cliff and this is actually an horizontal screen transition :/ Refunded
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →clunky and bad version of blasphemous
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not the worst metroidvania I've played, but it is incredibly tedious. Most of the time is spent grinding, but regardless of how much leveling is done, all enemies continue to be damage sponges. And while the controls are serviceable, everything just manages to feel awkward enough to make the general experience lack any satisfaction.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A souls-like metroidvania may be what they were going for but this attempt is all wrong. The game is difficult to survive in and grinding levels barely, if at all, helps. The limited stock on potions, arrows, and sub weapons is debilitating and just adds to the frustration. The controls are mid, the enemy and level design are acceptable. It's just frustrating instead of fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this one has attractive art and a gameplay loop that starts out strong, but it gets really repetative and the combat goes downhill really fast. I played it to 100% map a while ago and decided to give it another run because I never got true ending, but the reason I never got true ending was becase it became less and less fun over time and eventually became miserable. skip this one, it isn't worth it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fight boss, forget to rest at bonfire and you have to fight the boss again. Contact damage like crazy even if you're holding up your shield and they come into contact with your shield. Also, for some reason I keep throwing my throwable weapons even when I don't press that button. 3/10.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's kinda good and its kinda bad - while I like the penalty system, I find the dash annoying. the dash invulnerability doesn't even last up until the end of the animation but only a couple of milliseconds during the first activation/frames. Which means if you want to dodge you really have to be close to the mobs/boss, not to mention you can't dodge ANY projectiles at all. Another one of the classic pixel perfect crap. I can't think of any other reasons than devs making this 'hard' by adding…
