What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 199 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (13,352 of 14,053 positive).
Players praise the game's music and rhythm gameplay as exceptional. [1][2][3] Many find the story deep and thought-provoking, with some calling it life-changing. [4][5][3] Some reviewers criticize the story as derivative or unsatisfying. [6][7][8]

Horrible ending to an otherwise fun game. Everhood is on a constantly sliding scale of "Too derivative" and "Fun enough that I don't mind how derivative" and almost ended on the latter until it drops the ball on probably the most sociopathic interpretation of Buddhist philosophy I've ever seen in the final act. It ruined the whole experience for me personally. If you just want to play a trippy rhythm game and not …

I really underestimated this game. I had no idea how great the music would be or how perfectly they managed to integrate it into a game. Besides Thumper I never "felt" the music like this before. I also underestimated its difficulty. And I've never been more thankful for a selection of difficulties below normal/standard. Last but not least, I underestimated the NPCs and their stories. The game is as charming as it …

Life changing. Probably the best game I have ever played, with an ending so beautiful it changed my outlook on life. Amazing characters, gameplay, story, and music. I love this game.

As someone who likes rhythm games, the way that the battles seemed to flip the genre's idea on its head is what initially made me excited to play. However, after reaching the ending, I can say for certain that the story was the highlight of the game. It did a very good job at immersing the player into its strange world and getting you attached to the inhabitants. I don't want to spoil any of the story but the core …

A very solid rhythm game with a good balance of narrative and gameplay Gameplay The gameplay of this game can be boiled down to "reverse rhythm game" but there are exceptions. The main mode you will partake in is a 5-lane grid where notes come down, but instead of hitting the notes when they reach the bottom, you must dodge them until the fight ends. The game does quite a bit with this concept, including a little …

Critics, per Wikipedia
Everhood received positive reviews upon its release, with several reviewers commenting on the variety of musical scores and high level of quality in how battles are presented. The PlayStation versions of the game, released in 2023, received scores of 7 and 8/10. Issues raised were the potentially overwhelming visuals and lack of differences between difficulty levels. Zoey Handley of Destructoid praised the music in the game, but noted that the story threw in too many plot twists. Alana Hagues and Ollie Reynolds, writing for RPGFan and Nintendo Life, respectively, found the game's musical score to be one of its highlights, particularly its variation and ability to combine with the unique…

The tracks are straight bangers, the rhythm gameplay is addictive as ever and it's truly a psychedelic masterpiece. Giggling and kicking my feet from how good this game is...

neutral · AI labelView post →oh! Everhood 2 is out! I finished it last week. good: battles are even better than in the first game, music is all bangers, full of goofy guys, one other thing that requires a post all its own* bad: plot makes no sense, goes nowhere, extremely dissatisfying ending that says nothing.

During covid things got very dark for me personally and this game just hit perfectly on some stuff plaguing my mind at the exact right time I most needed it. The devs were one hit wonders unfortunately. Coming from that, the sequel was atrocious. Thief 2: The Metal Age. It's like crack to this brain of mine. Yes I play The Dark Mod…

It was a very good game all around, and I'd argue it's a good game even if you don't know all the references. Also helps give me a more complete picture of Everhood 2, lol.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didn't do it for me unfortunately. The story is that weird indie staple combination of sappy and epic. It deals with a hefty theme of death and immortality, but in a child-friendly superhero movie moral conundrum type of way. In those it's some silly question like "what if you had to kill your mom to save the universe???" and this game's writing, in my opinion, operates on the same level. It also loves jabbering on and on about itself, making it even sillier and harder to ignore. The gameplay…

neutral · AI labelView post →Everhood: An odd and Profound game, if you like indie titles that lean closer into allegory and "art piece" like OFF and such, I think there's a lot to enjoy here. I may go back to NG+ and see some of the content i missed. who knows, I've got plenty of time, and then some. (9/10)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a lot more than you think it is going in. I expected a fun rhythm game RPG and what I got is a game I'll probably be thinking about for years.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →for a pseudo-rhythm game the music is really not very good. the combat is not fun. the world is disjointed and nonsensical, the characters are 'random' and incredibly shallow. it's so derivative and ultimately feels like it's trying way too hard

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →any ideology (i am too stupid for this), symbology (i am too stupid for that) or iconography (i am also too stupid for this) this game threw my way went way over my head but it's a good time that you should assuredly NOT play if you are photo sensitive. a little bit on the nose with what it draws inspiration from but whatever it's a good time and you should give it a shot.

neutral · AI labelView post → !!! WARNING. SPOILERS. !!! Everhood for me. It's divisive, if you manage to connect with the game and don't bounce off it, I think it's one of the most emotionally powerful experiences I've gone through at least. The themes just happen to be intensely involved with most of my longest standing philosophical and existential struggles and the game was cathartic in dealing with them. Plus it's…
positive · AI labelView post →Wow, Everhood is really cool. I got beat up by an ATM in the first couple minutes of the game. Can't wait to play more.
positive · AI labelView post →To be honest, I haven't actually played 2 yet. But the first game holds a special place in my heart. The online consensus seems to be that the sequel has stronger gameplay and maybe even visuals too (the psychedelics in both games are a real trip), but the original has a far stronger story. Again, I haven't played the sequel, but I suspect you'll be better served by starting with the first one. A lot of people draw a parallel to Undertale, and while they're quite different games…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →firstly i love rhythm games very much, so i was quite upset to find out that is was not actually a rhythm game but closer to those bullet hell games where you die a bunch. then 1 week later, i remembered that i also love those bullet hell games where you die a bunch. 2 hours in and i genuinely believe i specifically am this game's target audience. you know how people who are in love always say "it's like they were made for me" about their partner. its like that but its a video game. there's…
