What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 254 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (11,301 of 13,167 positive).
Players praise the game's graphics, combat, and ship variety, calling it a great modern take on the Freelancer formula. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the story and writing lacking, with tedious puzzles and repetitive missions dragging down the experience. [4][5][6] A few players note the game feels unfinished or abandoned, with serious flaws remaining despite solid gameplay. [7][8][9]

This is one of those games which I would ideally give a "Mixed" review for, but steam doesn't allow such option. And whilst the line is very thin, I ultimately have to lean towards something, and as it stands I cannot recommend this game in its current state. Long story short - this game is abandoned with serious flaws still present. A few months ago, devs have made an announcement on their official discord that …

Everspace 2 is a great space exploration/action game which is in all aspects better than the first one. The story is captivating and told in comic like sequences and real cutscenes. All systems differ from one another. Everywhere are side missions and many random assignments to complete. There is also a huge variety of ships, which can be individualised in any aspect. You can build your complete own ship and design …

One of the best good looking/eye candy arcade space ship shooters overall. If you are a veteran of this genre (coming from 2000 era Freelancer/Starlancer like myself), you will love to try this one. ●Pros: ✓Wide galaxy to explore ✓Different classes of ships to play ✓Expansive storyline and plot ✓Multiple side quests, allowing you to side track when you want to. ✓Customizable ship appearance/skin as well as booster …

If you've been wanting to play a game like Freelancer, this is a great modern take on the same formula. Not only that, you can play the first few hours of the game with the demo, and if you decide to play the main game the save you have from the demo will carry over and you can continue without issue. It took me 60 hours to finish the main game, and I still haven't done all the side missions, nor the DLCs. Worth the …

Call me when both DLC's are bundled for like 15 bucks. Until then, find an experienced story writer. The gameplay is very! solid, just please pay an acutal writer with a story focus on world building. It lessened the experience so much when cutscenes were like two thirds fluff and one third information. Stop that. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So the game itself, the graphics, the immersion, combat, loots system, its awesome, it really is, B U T .... BUT.... It gets to a point where I found myself CONSTANTLY saying "WHY DO YOU DO THIS" out loud... Stupidly long searches for items, switches or whatever it is without a singly tiny clue as to where to start even. After countless immersion breaks from hitting a "SO WHERE THE F IS IT?!" wall I just lost the will to finish the game at lvl18. Its a story driven single player game, WHY…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was all set to give a positive review until I came across some extremely aggravating gameplay. I'm not one of those masochists that likes the impossibly hard gameplay. I find it frustrating and aggravating and not fun at all. It makes me want to stopm playing this game and play something that's fun. The races are stupid hard. I feel sorry for the person willing to spend the amount of time it must take to even finish a race let alone beat the record and get gold or platinum. And there's a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a strange phenomenon that surrounds Everspace 2, where every time good space games are being discussed, people will bring up this one, and then inevitably someone will chime in with something along the lines of "bah, Everspace 2 is just a dumb space shooter!" Which isn't entirely unwarranted, since Everspace 2 very clearly just wants to be a fun action game. But I think this argument is also a bit reductive, as it often stems from a dogmatic assumption that space games which don't bog…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished the main story because I was curious how it would end. But if someone asked me if I’d recommend it? Probably not. At first, I was really impressed by the graphics and even got some old-school Descent vibes mixed with No Man’s Sky and Star Wars: Battlefront II. The environments look amazing, the story’s decent, and the controls feel natural after a while. I also didn’t run into any bugs, and performance-wise, you don’t need any special hardware to have a smooth experience. But…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to be objective with this game and give my honest opinion in few sentences: - graph is amazing - space fight is probably if not the best there is for Space fighter action games there are Thing that bothers me from players perspective is sandbox environment with maps that feel like huge cages and are very limited in what you can do and how much options you have. Second and most important, I am seriously annoyed by the amount of tiny boxes and looking around / mini rogue quests I have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now that I've sunk over 36 hours into EVERSPACE™ 2, I'd like to share my thoughts. The game runs very smoothly for me. No crashes, no wild bugs, nothing to spoil the fun. Technically, everything feels polished, which, sadly, isn't always a given these days. The story is told in a pleasant way, often through images and dialogue, without constantly overwhelming you with text. You can tell that a lot of emphasis was placed on atmosphere. I often find myself wanting to do "just one more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Starts out really strong but gets tedious. I'd say play the demo and if you think you can repeat that gameplay loop for 30+ hrs then buy it. It has a few surprises and looks really nice especially the planetside levels, but then just stacks on piles of repetitive low-paying missions that all play out the same. The game is peppered with genius but is consistently marred by frustrating design decisions, like challenges where you have to find something but can't since it doesn't appear on radar…

This game is great... feels like a team of competent devs made it. Part of this dev team, however, was propably some mole, a troll, someone clearly insane, or maybe just stupid. You ask why? Features of this game are 90% fun, but the rest 10% (or maybe 50%, depends on how good you are) is just pure insanity - stupid puzzles where you seek item/s not shown on HUD. Space travel…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everspace 2 is a slog of a game which is unfortunate since the first game was a fun rogue-like with plenty of variety. As an immersive space sim fan, I was hoping this would scratch the "Freelancer" itch but it fails to do what that game did right. If you want a simple space combat sim, just stick to the first game. Using the same elements to make a full scale RPG may have been good in concept but failed to stick the landing. Gameplay: You fly a ship and engage in space combat against a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So needlessly complicated. Every item has stats, but also a level, but also a rarity level, but also an enhancement slot, and also sometimes it modifies both your regular ship stats like shield HP and your "ship character stats" which each also modify your ship stats. Then if you want to modify an item you can upgrade the level, or the rarity, or you can remove the entirely purposeless level restriction. But doing so requires no kidding five rows each with three to seven different types of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is for the most part quite fun. The core gameplay works and all that. But the game keeps railroading you the entire ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time and it constantly enforces not so fun restrictions on you which just combine to ruin the gaming experience. Yes, I could've dialed down the difficulty or went out of my way to grind up my gear and that's all fine. Except I cannot abandon the mission I was at ... which forces me to not use my weapons while to giving me anything in return. But it also…

Of all the games I have played for over 45 years, this one had the best soundtrack of all. That is really saying something. This soundtrack is simply phenomenal and matches the locations. The incidental dialogue was also fantastic. The developer has outdone themselves with this game and deserves ample praise. Truly, this game was an unexpected gem. Most…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a big fan of Everspace 1 and its roguelike element that made it genuinely fun and challenging, I was hoping for a similar but much improved experience in the sequel. Graphics were never an issue, by the way - both games are simply gorgeous. But as many of you have already noticed, no matter how hard you try to like Everspace 2, it feels like an unfinished game, and sooner or later you'll find yourself mindlessly one-shotting enemies on the highest difficulty with no interest left in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I rarely write reviews for games, but for this one I have to. tl;dr: A great sequel to the first Everspace, with a few small flaws. Main story takes (took me) about 50 hours to finish while doing almost all side missions along the way. I definitely recommend, especially if you buy during a sale. Let's start by answering something you might be wondering: do you have to play Everspace 1 before playing this game? I'd say that you don't have to, but you'll appreciate this game more if you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a few hours in now and unfortunately the gameplay loop already became very annoying. You spend a big chunk of your time traveling between jump points, would say at least 30%, the enemies seem to be the same 5 ship types over and over again, just with different levels. You can't just go straight for the main story either as you will be underleveled very fast, so you have to do the classic side quests like "kill x enemy" or "retrieve A and bring it to B" I'm in the 2nd Sector now and lost…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very unfinished game. (A new update has been announced, so take the following with a grain of salt. I intend to update after I've experienced the update.) While the game looks nice, and offers a variety of experience, I can't overlook a number of glaring issues with the game-play, mechanics, and design of the game. It's hard to recommend this game, but to be fair, it's good enough considering the developers aren't some huge studio. In other-words, I'm giving it a pass. The Pros. Space…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Buy it on bigger discounts; do not buy it at full price. It's not worth it. I have never seen a game that defines the word "watery" until I played this. This game is the epitome of "bland" - a fairly good 10-hour or less space shooting game super diluted into a 40+ hour drag. The shooting, RPG, and driving are fairly good - it gives you the fun, the engagement, the dopamine. That I will not deny. When you enter a high-risk area (generated high-level combat arenas basically), it's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was on the fence with this one, because there are so many good things about the game, but I gotta say, what tipped me over the edge was two maps Athor I and the Athorian Fault. Pros - Space looks great, maps look great - All the guns and different spaceships are cool - Combat is fun Cons - repetitive content/puzzles - endless quests/jobs pinging on the map - long ass fast travel - grinding for marginal upgrades I really enjoyed Everspace 1, and this game builds on some of the good things…

neutral · AI labelView post →The gameplay itself is somewhat good, its an arcade-y light-rpg space combat sim, and when I say light, I mean it- 3 classes of ship, each class gets 2 preset perk outfits, 5 rarity levels and like idk 10 different weapon types, once you try em all out you've seen everything. The biggest problem is the lack of variety and the linear story- idk if the DLC adds all this variety I'm missing but it feels like where I'm at I've just been doing the same thing over and over and every levelup, item…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 100% completion with DLCs and only a few minor achievements left playing at the highest difficulty, I can say that Everspace 2 is awesome. Highly recommended for some action-packed space fighting, exploration, and space-fighter gearing. Here are my highlights: - The main story is long, but in a very good way. It is generous and unpretentious, simple and interesting. Wrath of the Ancients story is a bit short in comparison, more could have been done there, but nevertheless well done. -…

I just want to add my thanks that the port to Unreal Engine > 5.3 was made and because of this the game is natively available on Mac, now. So: Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Space flight controls are good. Story is done in comic book style cut scenes and in game audio. Is more like Action RPG/Shooter, no leaving the ship and walking around. Originally found on gamepass.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a bit of a painful review for me as I really wanted to like this game. However, certain elements hold it back from being a positive review for me. For a start the positives: It has great controls and the graphics are awesome and make you feel part of the action. Truly gorgeous visuals. The combat can be fun and is satisfying taking down large opponents whether that be the battle cruiser bosses or the wardens. The Negatives: The repetitive mission design of following a signal and then…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty environments and a decent story, it can get pretty repetitive though. A lot of time will be spent jumping between systems and locations which is just an interactive loading screen, and most of the puzzles are just "fly around untill you find what you need under some debris on a random rock". I got it for 80% off so I can't complain too much, it provided some decent fun, but I would not pay full price.

Years ago, I had participated in ES1 KickStarter campaign and I was pleasantly surprised how that rogue-like game turned out to be. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I REALLY want to give this game a decidedly good review, as I am still playing it and for the *most* part enjoying it. But after a certain amount of time, you'll start to recognize that the game might just too bloated with artifically playtime-inflating trash and generally poor game design. Exploration tasks take entirely too long, and the puzzles that come with exploration quickly become nothing short of mind-numbingly tedious and aggravating. I generally like to feel as though my time and…

neutral · AI labelView post →I would really love to give this a mixed review. The regular gameplay is super fun, love the ship combat and the loot. But...the minigames and puzzles are simply not fun. So many times I found myself searching a space for long periods of time to find one small item that looks exactly like the environment around it, not to mention trying to move items from one place to another with your ship or drone reacting terribly. My time played was 50% fun, 50% frustration.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →6/10 as an Everspace sequel 8/10 as a Single-Player Space Looter Shooter I really liked the first game for its combat style, mysterious/serious game tone, and rogue-lite element. These are what made Everspace great imo. But this game is just a single-player space looter with liner story experience and cartoon-ish/stylized UI + art style. Combat is still really fun, with many ship classes. But most of the game just full of annoying-time-wasting little events and small puzzles. Fly here, fly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay Everspace is an open-world space looter-shooter game where you shoot enemies and collect valuable items. There are a total of 3 classes (light-medium-heavy) and 9 sub-class ships to play. Throughout the game, you will meet new companions that help you with their perks of speciality. The game usually allows you to progress by upgrading and boosting your ship and completing the main story and side missions. There is also a crafting system where you can craft literally anything after…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far the game feels like busywork with little meat.. You go to point A - fight some ships - go point B - get new mission - point C - fight same ships with different backdrop etc. The ship controls feel fine while you're on longer range, but in a dogfight it's all over the place with you fighting camera and auto-aim more than the enemies. So the core (space combat) is rather mediocre. Story is.. there. Trading is tacked on as an afterthought, though the price display system is great. There…

The realization for the story felt wanting, I wished I had better immersion on stations and had higher budget storylines to follow, but - also it didn’t matter as I ravenously wanted to complete the next missions. A master class in 3Cs for ship handling and UX. Great systemic fights. Smart design on systems. Tons to explore, but still a curated…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First game I've ever seen that I would honor by calling it a true heir to Freelancer. Complex and replayable, with intricate build choices and a variety of possible playstyles, and adrenaline-pumping fighter combat.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the ship fighting is actually fun, the grind to get the good weapon, and even after all that grind, the legendary weapons are NOT worth it compared to purple weapons, which are supposed to be a rank below legendary.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- After 130 hours, I've managed to complete the game (using Sentinel) and all possible achievements (38/58). The remaining 20 are from 2 seperate DLCs. - My most favorite games growing up were from the Descent series: Descent, Descent II, Descent Freespace, Descent Freespace II. I like that Everspace 2 included different environments like the old Descent games, such as lava, water, ice, and most importantly, underground tunnels and mines. It was nostalgic in a sense. - The puzzles were…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game, love it for so many reasons! If you like Diablo (Torchlight, PoE...) and space themed games, or if you loved Freelancer back in the day and wish there was a modern sequel, this is pretty much a must have. The greatest pros in my eyes: - controls and combat feel amazing. I love that while it is quite arcade-y (which is not my preference) and responsive, it still feels like you are in space, not in atmosphere, due to just enough inertia and 6 degrees of freedom maneuvering…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game overall. A crucial mechanic of the game however, kills the incentive to play the end-game loop. Why would you limit players to equip up to 3 legendary equipment? This is a single player game where there is no competition among other players who play the game. Equipping more than 3 legendary items wouldn't hurt anybody rather increase the enjoyment and replayability of the game. I finished the game, thinking that I would continue furthermore to farm legendaries but I have no incentive…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Space games usually don't have very deep combat mechanics due to the nature of space itself: Big and empty. Even some popular games have combat no more complex than who has bigger guns and can spin in faster circles. Everspace 2 does a great job of surpassing this limitation by adding lots of cover, loot, and interior spaces to each combat area. Weapons act differently and are highly skill based to aim. I like how trading is present, but can be done alongside missions and combat to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game for Freelancer and Privateer fans. The switch from rogue-like to a more traditional structure benefited Everspace 2, and the incremental nature of the game fits better with the epic nature of space combat and exploration. Combat is fun and fluid, controls are tight, and the difficulty is just right. Lots of optional challenges and puzzles keep the game interesting if you want to deviate from the main plot. There's a lot of content.

An excellent space shooter, and native to the Mac to boot. I'll be damned if Rockfish Games aren't looking into or even already working on Everspace for the Vision Pro. Feels like a no brainer. Surely Apple must be talking to them about it?
positive · AI labelView post →Way too much fog!!! I've really been enjoying this game. But I reached a point where the devs decided that putting fog everywhere in the game would be good. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everspace 2 is a true successor to Freelancer, and you can really feel that the developers at Rockfish poured a great deal of passion, hard work, and attention to detail into it. To be honest, I refunded the game at first because I had a completely wrong impression of what it was. But it stayed in the back of my mind, and after some time I decided to give it a second chance—and I'm really glad I did.
