60 of 70 · most liked firstEXISTENZ (1999) Dir. David Cronenberg A film that feels more relevant with time. Cronenberg explores virtual worlds and screen addiction through physical decay and organic technology. Practical effects are intentionally repulsive. The tone is bleak but the film’s warnings linger long after it ends🎞️📽️

neutral · AI labelView post →Now watching Existenz (1999). I’m actually not sure if I’ve seen it or not. I remember being excited for it as a young movie dork, but don’t have any memories if I ever ended up seeing it. Anyway, here’s to some weird body stuff 📽️ #horrorsky
neutral · AI labelView post →MOVIE #10 - NIRVANA (1997). Without a doubt the best Christmas themed cyberpunk film starring Christopher Lambert directed by an Italian. Pre-dates a lot of the visuals and ideas found in Cronenberg's EXISTENZ. Looks like an FMV game.
neutral · AI labelView post →One of my few treasured memories of my teenage years was spending a Sunday at the dollar theatre, handing the ticket person $4 then watching every movie they were showing on all 4 screens. It was an incredible lineup of films too: Existenz, The Matrix, 13th Floor, and Being John Malkovich.
neutral · AI labelView post →I loved The Fly & Videodrome. Existenz is also really good & fun. but I think the movie that affected me the most was Dead Ringers. It's so disturbing and sad and Jeremy Irons' performance was incredible. He didn't get the US recognition for it but won a Best Actor Genie.
positive · AI labelView post →Saw ExISTENz (which messes with my rule of writing film titles in all caps) for the first time and on the big screen today and walked out of the cinema with a huge smile on my face and a spring in my step ❤️
positive · AI labelView post →Saw Cronenberg’s newest movie The Shrouds yesterday and it was more potent than I was prepared for. It’s of a part with Videodrome and Existenz but also a summation of everything he’s worked with. One of the most blunt accounts of aging and death since Haneke’a Amour.
neutral · AI labelView post →Not necessarily a date since we’d been in a relationship for a couple of years at this point, but taking my then girlfriend to see EXISTENZ because she liked Jude Law. After that, she chose every movie for the next few years, which meant many rom-coms.
neutral · AI labelView post →This, 100% There was all sorts of weird, gloomy, kind of existential sci fi and horror at the end of the 90's, but it got very overshadowed. Existenz arguably falls in to this category as well, and even its status as a Cronenberg film doesn't seem to have boosted its visibility that much.
neutral · AI labelView post →Existenz has long been my favorite Cronenberg movie which doesn’t seem to be a widely shared view. I say it’s the funnest of his body horror films, more accessible (like the Fly) than a lot of his stuff
positive · AI labelView post →It was so interesting that Sigourney Weaver was serious about having David Cronenberg direct ALIEN RESURRECTION. & Cronenberg said he considered it, but if he had, he would’ve had to have been absoultely committed to making the movie the studio wanted-a studio professional & so he made EXISTENZ
neutral · AI labelView post →We watched this and Existenz for a movie night a few months back. The experience taught me that David Cronenberg really likes slimey sex monsters and knows a lot more about writing books than he does about video games
neutral · AI labelView post →Priest also novelised the 1999 Cronenberg film Existenz under his John Luther Novak pseudonym, but only for the UK edition and Priest is identified as the author inside the book. The US version published more or less at the same time however went out under Priest's name rather than Novak.
neutral · AI labelView post →The early design concepts for the PS2 were heavily inspired by the classic film, Existenz. It's a shame more of those features didn't make the cut, but the Dual Shock 2 was probably a better choice than the original controller design
neutral · AI labelView post →Watching ExistenZ now and I didn't expect it to be a game dev movie in Cronenberg style. Super cool to be honest. The movie features a gun shooting with human teeth it's so sick.
positive · AI labelView post →This is all the same genre of movie, what do we call it: The Matrix Existenz The 13th Floor The One Dark City
neutral · AI labelView post →happy Existenz Day. it’s a day for appreciating the movie Existenz. you don’t even have to watch it, just acknowledging it is fine.
positive · AI labelView post →Aw, man. I was hoping this was an ad for an Existenz movie-tie-in game on Dreamcast. via 90smovies on tumblr cc @brucelevenstein.bsky.social
neutral · AI labelView post →27 years ago I took acid and watched Existenz. Then I immediately watched it again. letterboxd.com/film/existenz/
neutral · AI labelView post →David Cronenberg's mindbender EXISTENZ (1999) is the best movie ever made about video games. My appreciation in The Definitives is now free from the paywall. Enjoy! Read: www.deepfocusreview.com/definitives/... #filmsky #moviesky #movies #cinema

neutral · AI labelView post →I watched a few David Cronenberg films this week, including Naked Lunch, which I really liked, and Crash, which, um... is a "little" disturbing 😅 I also rewatched eXistenZ, but I've mixed feelings about that film. #DavidCronenberg #NakedLunch #Crash #Existenz #Movies #Cinema

neutral · AI labelView post →Existenz was a much better Matrixy film than The Matrix.
positive · AI labelView post →Come and see this cool toy soldier I found Raggedy Ann and Andy in: The dollhouse DreamerZ, a less bloody version of ExistenZ Napocalypse now! Toys (The exact same Robin Williams film)
neutral · AI labelView post →The 23rd Halloween movie was "Existenz", a 1999 body horror film about playing hyper realistic games by connecting through a plug in your spine. Mostly this made me think how much better the movie Videodrome is, which tackled similar issues of an earlier era with a much better plot.
negative · AI labelView post →hmm.. I actually like one of his earliest movies, Rabid a lot. Feels so sleazy. I like his newest movie Crimes of the Future a lot too. But #1 is probably Existenz
positive · AI labelView post →#cronenberg #existenz I just watched Cronenberg's ExisTenZ and noticed the promotional website URL in the closing credits. 30 years on, it's nothing to do with the film anymore.
neutral · AI labelView post →Ah yes, takes me back to the peak Cronenberg film “Existenz”
positive · AI labelView post →I can't choose my favorite movie from when I was 20 Fight Club and Office Space were violently anticapitalist But I'm a Cheerleader and Existenz are violently queer
positive · AI labelView post →plan a horrorfest using only your first name (don't worry, i'll spare you the full 9 movie megafest) Devil's Candy Existenz Sinners It Follows ~or~ MaXXXine One Cut of the Dead Nightmare on Elm Street 2 Alien
neutral · AI labelView post →I’d sign up for your movie night. Can I add: 1. Run Lola Run 2. Dark City 3. ExistenZ 4. Train To Busan 5. Pan’s Labyrinth
neutral · AI labelView post →Oh ok, I’m not sure why I thought it was his 1st film then. Love the Fly, Scanners, Videodrome, Nightbreed, & even Naked Lunch but need to watch Dead Ringers & Existenz.
neutral · AI labelView post →Oh man, for other movies on that Videodrome wavelength there's also Crimes of the Future (2022) and Existenz. Crimes of the Future is this sort of performance art surgery movie and Existenz has a kind of flesh gun thing but made of bone and also what if VR but it plugged directly into your spine.
neutral · AI labelView post →Great watch, ExistenZ is a favorite Cronenberg film.
positive · AI labelView post →In movie history there have been many eating scenes (Tom Jones, Existenz etc.) Have any actors been sickened because they left the food too long in a warmer while setting up the shot? Any actors get sick because they're doing retakes and they wind up eating 3x what they should?
neutral · AI labelView post →So happy to see ExistenZ on there. Loved that movie.
positive · AI labelView post →Channel 83 and VHS Tracking present… EXISTENZ (1999) Friday 24 April 9:00pm Luna Leederville One night only - tickets on sale now! www.lunapalace.com.au/films/existenz
neutral · AI labelView post →I didn't see After Life but I know that feeling of accidental pairings between films. In my mind I link Last Night with Existenz, because I think they came out at around the same time and both have Don McKellar in them (each director appears in the other's film).
neutral · AI labelView post →The only other two films I've seen by David Cronenberg are The Fly and A History of Violence with Viggo Mortensen (a long time ago now). I hope to see them again one day (along with others!) 🧵 2/ #DavidCronenberg #NakedLunch #Crash #Existenz #Movies #Cinema
neutral · AI labelView post →“EXistenZ is a top 5 cronenberg movie” requires heavy anakin/padme meme phrasing
positive · AI labelView post →Film 56: Sequence Break. Video Game Drone sounds like a cool idea, but Cronenberg already made Existenz, and this is nowhere near as good as either of those films.
negative · AI labelView post →Guess I’m catching a block because I thought Existenz was a great movie. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
positive · AI labelView post →Says a fucking lot of people, what the fuck do you mean? If you tell me Existenz is a good movie, you're catching a block because that level of vapid thought is not something anyone should have to put up with. Crash is also famously unliked.
negative · AI labelView post →Tomorrow’s video is on eXistenZ, which I somehow find grosser every time I think about it. I’m less interested in solving the ending than in what the movie does to the body: the way the game stops feeling like something separate from you. That’s the part that sticks with me. #eXistenZ #FilmEssay
neutral · AI labelView post →I watched Existenz for the first time recently and the body horror stuff made me feel extremely grossed out and uncomfortable but I wouldn't call it a "scary" movie. It's a great thriller but I never really felt scared
positive · AI labelView post →For me ,that was ExistenZ. my "the matrix" movie.
positive · AI labelView post →A rogue misspelled awesome David Cronenberg movie has appeared! asixteenz ? No, Existenz! ( I do NOT want to know what asixteenz might be, ug )
positive · AI labelView post →Oooh does this mean ExistenZ might be on the list? Loooove that movie
positive · AI labelView post →If you like the ExistenZ movie , i think this is it's grandfather..
neutral · AI labelView post →Existenz is a good video game movie
positive · AI labelView post →Fun side notes - This served as half the base footage that was adapted into Robotech: The Movie in the US. Also, it likely served as inspiration to the boom of existential sci-fi movies in the late 90's - Matrix, Dark City, Existenz, etc.
neutral · AI labelView post →Supposedly the distributor didn't think it was commercially viable and gave it a limited release. It's a solid movie, but hardly in the league of Naked Lunch, Scanners or Existenz; especially visually. Imagine a Netflix show, minus the incessant shaky camera.
