What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 66 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (61 of 91 positive).
Players find it a fun mix of RPG, roguelike, and tactical elements, often comparing it to FTL. [1][2][3] Many note the game is hard at first but becomes easier with experience. [2][4][5] Some reviewers criticize the static map, repetitive combat, and poor writing. [6][7][8]

All of the classes are locked, except fighter, and have to be unlocked during play. That annoys me, and was the first indication I got that I probably wouldnt like this game, but from there it got worse. The map is static, rather than randomly generated, which means that this game has no business calling itself a rogue-like. The combat is extremely repetitive, and gets boring after the first hour. Your weapons and …

I honestly cannot believe how bad the writing and grammar is in this game. On top of that, I can't believe no reviewer mentioned this. This is not at the level of "oh, the story's boring and childish", it's at the level of "I think a foreigner wrote the (terrible) storyline and translated it into English via Google or Babblefish". Here is the FIRST text box of the entire game, I will let you judge the writing and …

This is a surprisingly fun game for people who like RPGs, roguelike, and tactical games. The combat is solid for a game of this type. I really enjoyed exploring and seeing different events, much in the way you come across interesting events when doing escort missions in Fallout 1. I'm an FTL junkie and this game satisfied that urge as well. Edit: Issue resolved, thank you! I'm now over the 40 hour mark and playing …

The game is hard in the beginning, but gets easier as you go. It is definitely a rogue game. as you can die at any time. I like the art and the gameplay, and with time, I think it will be a well polished game. The developers seem involved in releasing new patches to address problems. If you like short bursts of gameplay in a rogue style, you'll like this one. Don't expect the depth of an RPG done by a major …

Its like playing Faster than light but with swords and bows! Awesome ! Easy to learn hard to master, my kind of game. The continue support of the developers is very positive and a think the game overall, despiect some minor problems is awesome. And I still play it one year after xD Edit: Still play from time to time.

That would be unexpected but it wouldn’t be big brother. Like what is not clicking for these casuals!?????? #bb27

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →nice adventure game. I like that the maps change randomly after u die, makes it harder to prepare yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTLdH_PbSfQ
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tactical turned based game of simply moving around the map, triggering random/repeating encounters, and ultimately towards the various Rune location and clearing it, be it eliminating foes or simply there to drop three weapons. A Grind for Experience and loot to level one's class magic and inept skills. What used to be locked classes except fighter, are now revealed to all from start. During my first playthrough with Hard mode, the Archer class seemingly is the easiest of the all classes…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The LINUX version oesn't work. It only displays a grey screen with a custom mouse cursor. Worked at one point, then some change to the unity game engine version caused problems. There was no fix years, which is not a good reflection on the developer. That said, I tried it again with Steam's Proton compatibility software, and yet it was entirely disappointing, like something from the indie gala website.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game need a lot of work, but it is a promising game, at the momment the best any one can do is try to head into town without dying a horrible death on your very first step. The death mini game is pretty pointless as i see no way to even guess the right answer to the riddle in time. Many events await you, and most of them will be negative ones but the combat is nice, and it does seem like they plan to make the game more balanced. The story is pretty weak from what i saw as i spawned, you are…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a one of a kind game. I was looking for this type of game for a long time. Reading all the comments I thought the game was unfinished or something. The gameplay can be improved yes, but has great potencial to be perfected. This game is definitely not for noobs but if you are a roguelike/turnbased rookie you can start playing in easy mode. The story and events make the experience very addictive for roguelike lovers. Go ahead and support this amazing indie game you won't regret it! 5 stars
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bro stop saying that, “Expect the Unexpected” is a tagline not the premise. The PREMISE is a social strategy game where 1 person wins HoH and noms 2-3 other people before an eviction vote taking place in a house with 24/7 surveillance in reference to George Orwell’s concept of Big Brother in “1984”
neutral · AI labelView post →This game is very similar to FTL in that you move around on the map and get different encounters. The battle system however is turn-based, and this is also fantasy as opposed to sci-fi. Pros: - several different unique and in-depth classes - interesting battles and scenarios - good inventory and reputation system - requires strategy and planning (in a good way) Cons: - battles can get repetitive - early game is extremely hard, especially one unavoidable encounter - graphics aren't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't review a ton of games but this one deserves it. Game is repetitive and boring. Combat is meh, AI (when you get a hired hand) is bad. I thought it had some potential but in the end it was 2 hours of my life I couldn't get back.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm enjoying this game. It's a good mix of strategy, rpg and rogue-like. The puzzle thing to rez is pretty neat and different. Also, I like the setting of different factions and rep you can gain depending on your choices. I'm playing on normal and it's not too hard so far (I have 6 runes I believe, died once because dropped weapons at the altar and lost them, didn't have a spare lol). I haven't tried the archer or wizard class yet (just unlocked archer). The only downside so far is random…

I didn't know anything about this game until recently and it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. So what's good about it? Well, first of you have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What an awesome game! I hope there is a sequel or some clones of this as it was fun to play. I like Tactical RPGs and I know this is also a Roguelike I enjoyed it for what it is. I am not sure why people complain about it being too hard and then complain about the map being static. If it is too hard with a static map you guys would not get further if it was randomly generated. Really if you are coming into this thinking it is an action type Roguelike you are wrong. I mean all you have to do is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really liked the game, still do not understand how not to notice it among others. Pros: + A huge world with many cities and random locations + Turn-based battle system 5 different classes. + Ability to assemble your team + Reputation system + Not linearity, you can do what you want, and then go on the plot + Huge number of random events + With every new game the world changes Disadvantages: -From a completely free game this game is separated by a map that opens on the plot. I definitely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple and fun! Never experienced such unexpected things. Its a bit hard at the beggining but as long you keep searching for apples and using the right combos becomes easier.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love it, Commited Developers Comment: Please make it so that theres a flee option (for example deducting a chunk of gold if you flee) and make the combat a little more challenging/complex. (Even though I died 5 times on easy difficulty)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is almost good, but I feel the rebirth / new life mechanic is missing. Your character really can die at any time, and if you've invested any amount of time into him, it really is a letdown to have to start over again with nothing gained. A lot of roguelikes have new skills learned or powers unlocked after a nice playthrough so that you can feel some kind of reward for your wonderful effort on your now dead character. This game needs something like that to enhance replay value. I know…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it. Kind of like FTL in the middle ages.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2 hours playing and I only got 6 runes, although it becames harder the farthest away from home, it is totally enjoyable. For the price deliver what most titles fail to, fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So this game falls entirely inline with the genre I love. It's difficult at the start, once you get some levels the game definitely gets easier but you can still definitely mess up and die. Overall I like the general direction of the game, the death system is an awesome way to keep going after a mistake (as long as you can do some quick mental math ;) ). The game doesn't appear to have much replay value IMO and the ending was LOLWTFBAD, but overall I don't feel ripped off. Fun little 10-12…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was so surprised. This would be a poor investment for an Early Access game. No tutorial, which is fine if there were at least tool tips. Gameplay is bland, unbalanced, and poorly explained (How in the world does one charge?). Poor dialogue, lots of errors, etc. The issues compound, wait for .99 sale in a few years.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not worth $10. This could be an online Flash game for its quality and depth. Combat is simplistic yet slow and traveling is more tedious than exciting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: - Fun game if you like tactical combat games - The classes are unique, you want to play this game at least a second time - The Skills are not just stat adjustments - I personally like that the world is not random generated - The time you need to reach the next level seems linear, so even at higher levels it doesn't take an eternity to level up - Each faction has it's unique equipment, each of them is best in one type of item (except the Barbarians) - The User Interface fits perfectly with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was fun for the first hour then it get gringing and boring really fast. it would be nice if the dev add more events and make the game more complex then just click and hit. In conclusion I recommend this game for kids under 8. As a 19 years old man I will give this game a 5.1/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thought I'd give it a 2 hour trial and get my refund. WRONG! Liked the game enough that I kept it. Definitely a game you can keep coming back to and play in spurts.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whoever thought "Can't run away from combat" mechanic and "All your items and gold are stolen" event are good idea should be kept away from designing games, period.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dont review much, I had to review this one. This have many elements of FTL, its like the ftl but with swords and arrows. The replay-value is great, got 5 diferent characters to choose with specific gameplay very cool we don't have to play the same way. Overall get it you won't regre it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, it uses a similar formula to FTL regarding the world map, random events and resource management, but the combat and exploration follows the Rogue style. It also features an alignment system that helps spicing up the choices.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Expect the unexpected represents well the type of game I like. A fast paced turn based strategy games with elements of a decent RPG, survival, stealth etc. Although it looks simplist, it's very fun and hard. It can be very difficult at times, which actually makes you want to play more. Some minor issues happen here and there (which the team is working hard every day to improve it), but nothing that compromises the gameplay and the quality of the game overall. Well worthy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Difficult yes, looks simplistic yet more fun than most games, the randomness really gives a unexpected moment, where everything is going well, then suddenly a crazy thing happens and chances your current game. I am really enjoying the game, I recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After the added difficulty settings have allowed me to ease into the game I like it alot more thank you for adding this :D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished up #DELTARUNE chapters 3 and 4. All I gotta say about both of them without spoiling it for people who haven't played it yet is: Expect the Unexpected. good job @tobyfox.undertale.com game good 👍 can't wait for the next chapter!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even on easy difficulty you get killed on a travel between two citys. You start without enough gold to buy anything. Just boring crap game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Changed this from a slightly negative review to a semi positive one. THE TUTORIAL SUCKS. Once you actually start playing it it's ok. But honestly I had no Idea what I was doing the first time I played. Give it a shot.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Expect The Unexpected is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. This mobile app features a 2D retro pixel turn based combat game with lightweight RPG elements, and it's pretty bad. The game design for this mobile app is fundamentally flawed, with punishing RNG, inconsistent rules, and it's generally un-fun to play... I guess it's more fun on an iPhone? Who knows. What really bugs me about this copy + paste…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It didn't keep my interest. The map is static, world setting not fictionally compelling, events too repetetive, and the writing too simplistic and full of grammatical errors (obviously not written / translated by a native English speaker).
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Developers have effectively abandoned this Title. It looked cute. It is cute. But theres nothing new coming. Last time anyone commented about new content was a year ago. 3-19-18 LOL Banned from commentary because I keep pointing out that every update is Bull. Little tiny insignificant changes, while still not adding any actual game content. This developer has no honor, and no integrity. The game is not and never will be complete. 4-10-19 Every Update to Date is Bugs and Features. NO NEW…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Purchased this game after enjoying "Dungeons of Hell' (and then trying the demo) by the same developer. Found myself a bit lost at first but after a few perfunctionary deaths, I quickly settled into the rhythm of the game and have enjoyed the experience. Only minor complaint is that I would like the map overview to be a little more transperent so I can quickly decide if i want to bypass (if that is an option) that map. The precise enemy deployments and terrain factors ca be hard to ascertain.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've had my eye on this game for a bit on my wishlist. It is a very deep fun game for $0.99 cents on sale and it is the best 99 cents I've ever spent for the amount of content in this game. It reminds me of the olden days of Zelda added with good Rpg elements & strategy and being able to play 5 different classes offers a fun experience. So far I have found at least in the early game the Warrior to be challenging and hard on the hardest difficulty level. It has many random events as your…
