What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 173 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (5,417 of 6,557 positive).
Players praise the game's oppressive, melancholic atmosphere and J-horror aesthetic. [1][2][3] Many note that the PC port has clunky controls, especially without a controller. [4][5][6] Some reviewers find the gameplay repetitive and the ghost encounters tedious. [7][8][9]

I really wanted to like this game more than I did. I liked the story and the idea behind the game, but the execution falls so, so flat Controls are janky, character movement is sluggish, every ghost encounter simply made me sigh the more I played rather than exciting me because it's kinda the whole point of the game - fighting off ghosts with a camera, but I was not able to enjoy that, it became tedious very, very …

Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Black Water brings this classic Japanese horror into the modern era, focusing on a damp, dark, and melancholic atmosphere. This is what attracted me to this franchise, as it relates to J-Horror genres (such as The Ring, Ju-On, Sadako, and Teketeke). The unique Camera Obscura mechanic, with responsive controls, provides a unique experience in maintaining distance from approaching entities. …

Quick thoughts: the vibes: literally so depressing but in a beautiful way? everything is wet and dark and i’m obsessed with the atmosphere. it’s giving major j-horror brainrot. the combat: honestly? firing a camera at a ghost’s face is satisfying af. it’s way more fun than it has any right to be, even if i'm lowkey screaming half the time. 💀 the controls: okay, the movement is a bit clunky. the girls move like …

One of the best horror games on steam and probably ever. Yes, it has some pacing issues since youll return to the same scenery a couple of times trought the game but even so the story, music, ghosts and atmosphere are simply amazing. Plenty of nice fanservice too for those interested. Underrated and gorgeous.

Maiden of Black Water is a solid entry in the series, with a slick new combat system, a giant overall map to explore, tons of secrets to discover, and absolutely fascinating lore. Folks who've played Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will appreciate the faster, smoother movement. The graphics have taken a fair step forward as well, particularly in the character models, and the environments, while not nearly up to today's …

86% of the 173 Steam reviewers we collected recommend FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water. The complaint that keeps coming up: pC controls are awkward and require a controller. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
During its opening week, the game debuted at #7 in Media Create's sales charts, with opening sales of 27,505 units. The following week, it dropped to #11, selling a further 7,105 units and, at that point, bringing total sales to that point to 34,610. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Zero / Project Zero original trilogy on PS2? G.O.A.T! Fatal Frame is called Zero (零) in Japan because of a clever Japanese wordplay: the kanji for "zero" (零) is pronounced "rei," which is the same sound as the kanji for "spirit" or "ghost" (霊). This pun beautifully captures the game's themes of spirits, nothingness, and the boundary between life and death, a meaning lost in direct translation to English, leading to localized titles like Fatal Frame (North America) or Project Zero…

neutral · AI labelView post →An immediate (and one of very few) downsides to this port is that its coming from the Wii U version of the game, so the keyboard controls are incredibly strange. Ex: 'a', 'd', 'h', and ';' keys are how you look around, 'J' is to open the map, 'C' is to run, 'i' is to open the camera, 'tab' and 'e' adjust the lens, 'o' is to shoot it, etc. - so you're literally all over the keyboard constantly. Just feels very clunky, but once you get used to it, it's.... alright, I guess. Only really…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I originally played Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water on the Wii U, and it remains one of the best uses of the gamepad in the entire console's library, using it as the Camera Obscura is the best way to play the game imo. It delivers one of the most beautiful Japanese horror atmospheres in the genre. The game doesn’t rely on cheap jump-scares to be atmospheric, and tbh I didn’t find the game scary at all, however grabbing items always keeps you on edge, the slow animation leaves you completely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was really fun to play...but did the ghosts really need jiggle physics?! The jiggle honestly made it very unserious. The lore is so good, I don't know why they suddenly had to make this one so male oriented. The previous games were fine as they were without every ghost jiggling around. I really like the setting of this one. Other FF's are also good, but a creepy mountain setting is right up my alley. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was Miku's storyline.........if you know, you know....

I've played the Og versions of fatal frame 1 and 2 on ps2 in my early teens, and I'm so not disappointed with the remake of this one. The gameplay is smooth; different cam/lenses for different fatal frames, also love that the game isn't first pers. view. The different characters and sides of the story are really cool, and some ghosts are tricky so it's a lot of fun. I honestly can't wait to continue playing ! ദ്ദി(• ˕ •マ.ᐟ

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an alright little game, but the biggest detriment is they re-use the hell out of all the assets and that gets a little dull. If you kept seeing new locations that would be a lot more interesting. The camera exorcism gameplay is cool even with the clumsy camera control. There's a "wetness" mechanic that just feels like an excuse to look at wet character models and supposedly you take more damage, I dunno. In terms of story the character motivations just feel like everyone's constantly…

Gives me flashback to the first Dark Souls PC port. Also you need to change your compatibility settings for the executable JUST to get 1920 x 1080 Resolution... WTF?!... Will still play this but I can't recommend it. Would've thought the devs finally managed to make proper PC ports in the 2020s. This is just a console port.

I enjoy the resident evil and silent hill games, and they're functionally a much better survival horror experience than what you get here. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find this game to be very over hated. I really like the idea of being able to see the final moments of the person before they became a vengeful spirit. It makes it fun to find hidden ghosts if you stray away from the path. The ghosts also look beautiful visually. You can dress the characters up in very beautiful clothes too and the story for the most part is fine for what it is. I always find myself replaying this game just to walk around the map.

After the iconic PS2 triptych and the modern Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, Koei Tecmo wanted to appeal to a wider audience, which came at the cost of sacrificing its own identity. With each passing hour, those expectations were getting shattered, locked inside of a box and thrown into the black water. If you think this new direction introduces a narrative that's strong…
