Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 202 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (9,677 of 13,707 positive).
Many players feel F.E.A.R. 3 is a competent shooter but a disappointing sequel that loses the series' horror and atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some reviewers praise the co-op and fast action, finding the game fun despite its flaws. [4][5][6] Others criticize the generic military shooter feel, poor story, and lack of identity compared to earlier entries. [7][8][9]

I went into F.E.A.R. 3 expecting it to be terrible, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. I would argue that this game very overhated in my opinion. Sure, it's a little different when compared to the first two entries in the franchise, but it still contains that essence that makes it a F.E.A.R. game. If you're curious, I recommend giving this game a try, but if you're worried about not liking it, buy it when it's …

F.E.A.R. 3 delivers fast, intense first-person action with a dark horror atmosphere. The shooting feels powerful, the enemy encounters can become chaotic, and the supernatural story surrounding Point Man and Alma keeps the campaign unsettling. Co-op is a standout feature, allowing another player to join as Paxton Fettel with his own abilities. The game leans more toward action than the slower psychological horror of …

It is amazing how they ruined the series so much. Everything that made the original game incredible, and the second game arguably good, is gone in this third instalment. No atmosphere, the story starts off weird and makes no sense, the game is made for coop and has turned into a mediocre cover-based shooter where you recover health if you stay in cover long enough. It is like they took everything that made the …

F.E.A.R. 3 is a decent FPS, but a terrible sequel to F.E.A.R. The first game was an incredible combination of fast and satisfying gunplay, intelligent enemies, disturbing atmosphere, and genuinely effective horror. F.E.A.R. 2 already moved further toward action, but still managed to retain much of that identity. F.E.A.R. 3 basically throws most of it away. The horror is almost completely gone. Alma is no longer …

F.E.A.R 3 is in my opinion not on the level of the first 2 instalments of this game series. The horror elements are not done well and the atmosphere of mystery is simply not there. The developers changed and it shows. This game is more like an average-generic Call of Duty style shooter, and doesn't feel like a F.E.A.R game any more. Some details that have changed and that I don't like: - the slow motion effect in …

The Xbox 360 version holds a score of 75 out of 100, based on 71 reviews. IGN's Colin Moriarty scored the PC version 8 out of 10, praising the combat mechanics and the "authentically chilling" atmosphere. He also praised the game for trying something new, citing co-op, the "incredibly thoughtful" multiplayer, and the "addicting" challenge system. Although he was critical of the graphics, he praised the sound design and music, concluding, "you won't find the be-all, end-all shooter experience with F.E.A.R. 3,…

It was certainly not the greatest FPS ever made (not for me anyway), but it got enough things going on in it in terms of the core FPS gameplay loop to still make it a quite fun and memorable experience for years to come. The second game while still being a well paced, decently made and not unfun game to play, watered most of this down…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished the main story of F.E.A.R. 3! I had a blast playing this. Definitely flawed and messy but I enjoy its more "personal" narrative and edge that I thought the last game lacked, felt more Monolith sometimes. It had its frustrating enemies, but the action was super memorable. 🏆 7/10
positive · AI labelView post →Who would've thought that turning an unique first-person horror shooter into a mediocre, generic military shooter is a bad idea? Almost everything that were great about FEAR 1 are non-existent in the latter 2 games. It's like playing a rundown cod-clone cosplaying as FEAR. And I had more fun playing actual cod-clones like Homefront than FEAR 2&3. It isn't like they are as bad as some absolutely unplayable hot garbage, but they are painfully dreadful and mediocre, which is extra terrible…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →F.E.A.R. 3 I had to see how the trilogy ended and I wish I hadn't, it's baaaaaaad Not a game, but the HTC Vibe Pro, if that counts. Simply for how much it cost versus the quality of it. This one still stings, I was so excited to finally try VR and it sucked. Expensively. 😭
negative · AI labelView post →F.E.A.R. 3 is a disappointment, both as a FEAR game but as well as a standalone shooter. Released six years after the original, it manages to look worse and play worse, so kudos to Warner Bros for managing to mangle such a fantastic series. You know it's a 2011 shooter when they introduce you to cover mechanics before they teach you to slow-mo, because now there's regen health, and because of that piss filter and bloom plastered all over your screen. If FEAR 1 is perfect and FEAR 2 is decent,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well I don't understand what the game developers were thinking about this game. Wow what a giant slap in the face. This is like a arcade call of duty. I played both F.E.A.R 1 and 2 and I had a really good time. This game feels like you are on rails which isn't always a bad thing but then there's all this filler. Ton's of enemy's and I mean tons and tons and 99% of the time there exactly the same enemy's. Over and over and over one area you fight tons of enemy's next level your fighting ton's of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not a terrible game, but it's an awful FEAR game and it's just.. meh. Even without the FEAR name I still wouldn't recommend it. One of the FPS games of all time; one that didn't need to be made. (Yes, the story really is that pointless - it doesn't wrap things up.) It's short, at least if you blaze through it like I did ..but I'd still skip it. Visuals: They're ok. The game looks far, far worse than FEAR 2 and arguably worse than the FEAR. Textures are muddy and low res, colours are drab…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Score: ◆◆◆◇◇ (3/5) TLDR: Not as bad as I was expecting, but may as well not be a FEAR game. Gameplay is more fun than FEAR 2 though and I hear co-op is actually quite good if you can rope a friend into playing this. Just barely escapes a thumbs down from me. Going into FEAR 3 I was expecting a trainwreck based on the negativity surrounding the title. Maybe those bottom of the barrel expectations proved to beneficial to F3AR since I come away just thinking it wasn't all that bad. FEAR 3 is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FEAR 2 might have been a bit divisive with its more bombastic approach to the original, but I doubt there will be many people (if any) who are divided on the quality of this last entry. If it was any other series then it wouldn't be the worst game you've ever played (because it isn't), but for this series? It's a painfully average finale. When I think of FEAR it brings to mind three things: (1) glorious shooty-shooty-bang-bang, (2) effective jump-scares, and (3) a creepy atmosphere. Whatever…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is number 10/272 of my unplayed backlog. Okay yeah, this one is bad. I couldn't make it very far without just being totally done. I saw the writing on the wall of what the game was, having played lots of 360 era shooters like this. All the elements of F.E.A.R. are gone, it is a husk. This one aims to be a first person Gears of War like co-op shooter. I can imagine back then this would've been a fun rental for a friends sleepover where y'all can finish the co-op together, but unless you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I teamed up in F.E.A.R. 3 expecting horror. What I got was co-op therapy with guns. This isn’t the slow, suffocating fear of the first game. It’s louder. Faster. Chaotic. Point Man shoots. Paxton floats, possesses, judges reality. Two playstyles. One unstable family. The horror doesn’t stalk you. It interrupts. Jump scares replace tension. Gunfights replace silence. And sometimes, atmosphere loses the argument. But when it works? It really works. Hallways stretch. Lights flicker. Alma shows…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been a long time since I played FEAR 3, but looking back I remember it being a really awkward game. It shares the name and characters of the FEAR series, but otherwise it's pretty bad. It's (mercifully) short. The fact that it's co-op makes it at least not entirely boring if you bring a friend. And that's about it for the bright spots on things. The story is pretty terrible. The level are pretty uninspired and not even remotely scary like FEAR and even FEAR 2 were. And the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's not a Max Payne 3 situation. more like The Darkness 1 vs 2. it mainly depends on which one you discovered first. the first game had this deceptively tricky style. everything looked shallow and simple, but it really wasn't. the game was actually very unique and memorable. the third one overlooked all that and went for a more straightforward comic-book action shooter. probably because 15 years ago there was huge pressure to turn every shooter into Call of Duty. that's another reason for its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good: ‣ Didn't play Co-op but having that option is neat. ‣ Two different playstyles (tho you unlock the other one after finishing each level). ‣ The graphics held up surprisingly well, especially for a 2011 game. ‣ Multiple Endings. Mixed: ‣ The story was... decent, but it felt like someone took the plot from the F.E.A.R. series and dropped it into a Call of Duty game. ‣ It leaned much more towards arcade-style action than horror. Bad: ‣ The enemies were really boring and lacked variety. ‣…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Using my new powers of Bluesky migration I order all of you to go out and buy the hit 2011 FPS/Horror game developed by Day-1 Studios F.E.A.R. 3
neutral · AI labelView post →A strange time in gaming, when this was released many FPS games were trying to copy the success of Call of Duty, whether it fitted in with the brands identity or not. The result was FEAR becoming a more action focused game to appeal to the CoD masses. F.E.A.R was already a niche franchise, this game killed it by not appealing to the games fans, but to the mass market at the time. A real shame, I hope this franchise gets rebooted someday
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game's great. Not sure why the hate. Runs well, gameplay is fun (while different than F.E.A.R 1) , story made no sense tho. Don't believe the hate , try it out, it's dirt cheap atm.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Total hot garbage. I expected more of the same style of gameplay, but this? I don't know what this is. hordes of opponents that seem to always flank and kill. Even on easy mode I get my ass handed to me. what a frustrating pile of garbage. According to others reviews this game will continue to disappoint with gobs and gobs of enemies. I don't like the style or the gameplay. If this didn't come in a bundle, I wouldn't have bought it. Yes, I realize it's 15 years old.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →F.E.A.R. 3 was where I completely gave up on the series. After playing the first two games, I expected the third one to at least continue developing the foundation that had been established, but instead it feels like the series keeps moving further away from what made the original interesting. The game immediately changes its visual identity again, with a much more cinematic presentation and character designs that feel strangely disconnected from the rest of the game. The paranormal characters…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not even as good as the second game, even worse red mist situation than the previous game. Tsk tsk tsk.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not a F.E.A.R. game. This is a game that you and your friends find in an arcade, play once, then go find the actual game you wanna play. The fact that buying this is the only way I could play the original F.E.A.R. makes it feel like a parasite that is holding the original hostage for ransom
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play as Paxton Fettel and his brother. One is using psychic abilities another guns to solve problems. Horror is much more present. Lore is more explained about events that occur. Probably weakest in the series but still playable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just like Project Origin, but somehow worse - Not as good as F.E.A.R. 1, Nothing like F.E.A.R. 1. This time the horror barely kicks in and the downgrade in gameplay makes it play more like those 7th gen shooters that tried to emulate COD too much.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks when you play it alone, BUT if you play it with a friend it still sucks.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A passable co-op experience, but not very fun as a single player game. Not scary and very repetitive. Sadly the final nail in the FEAR franchise coffin.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bad FEAR game, good horror shooter.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game doesn't hold a candle to the original FEAR, but imo the coop and presentation elevate it above FEAR 2, which was lackluster other than the DLC. The game is short and completely unsubtle, but the possession mechanics and setpieces make it stand out. Considering it's regularly cheap as chips, it's worth a look if you have a friend to bring along. For $60 this was terrible value, but these days it's much easier to justify if you like camp, especially on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's honestly better than fear 2 in a lot of ways, but the reason I can't recommend either of them is because fear 1 was a true pc game that plays beautifully even 20 years later, both fear 2 and 3 are very obvious console games that play like any generic xbox 360 era shooter, everything that made the first one great is gone in both of them. The only reason to play through these is for the story, but even that is kinda questionable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Obligatory reminder, as it is spooky season: F.E.A.R. + Expansions > F.E.A.R. 3 > F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin F.E.A.R. 3 is actually lots of fun, especially in co-op. You can possess people and eat their souls. And the four player modes are all outstanding. Perfect party game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warner Brothers made the same mistake Capcom did with RE6. This game isn't scary, its not even creepy. It's just straight up an action game! If you get a buddy then maybe you can enjoy this game but it so grueling and tedious to play. The enemies are not as intelligent like in previous titles. The harder difficulties are a cake walk. And there's multiplayer achievements but I'm pretty sure the servers are offline after 15 years! The good news about those achievements is that you CAN against…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FEAR 3 is both better and worse than I had expected. It's much more competent of a shooter than the impression I had before playing. It still has ruthless and intelligent AI opponents gunning for you, stylish gunplay, and a story mixing paranormal horror with sci-fi action. However, it's also shockingly short. You can beat the main story in 4 hours, while the previous FEAR games had full-length campaigns. There are bonus modes to play and a different protagonist you can explore the story with,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll start off by giving some credit where it's due, the fact that you can download this game for just 6GB of storage and not have the textures be horribly compressed is literal black magic. However, F.E.A.R. 3 feels like it was designed by people who didn't understand what made the series popular to begin with, like the slow motion gunfights, tense atmosphere and a vague plot that slowly gets pieced together as you play. Instead, it plays like a generic FPS with slow motion mechanics and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It didnt suck actually...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can see why most of y'all do not like this game. It has a LOT of flaws, mainly: The story is... eh. Can be a little hard (skill issue on my part) The cover mechanics are a bit flawed, and annoying to use. You have to "mount" to cover if that makes sense. Ammo can be a bit scarce, especially when you play for the first time with the insanely low ammo cap for all weapons, at least until you "level up" (which is dumb this is a singleplayer game)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Coop doesn't work. Fixes dont help.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I went into this game with the knowledge it wasn't like the others. Despite this I wanted to give it an honest try and see if it was better than many let on. Horror has basically been thrown out the window and resources such as med kits are nonexistent. They've instead replaced it with the evermore popular regenerating health, turning this game into more of a cover shooter. I couldn't bring myself to complete past Chapter 2 as it wasn't hitting how I would expect a F.E.A.R game to
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First two FEARS were awesome, loved each level. This...this is just so boring. I wasnt even scared when everything is happening outside and you have big ass robot with rockets. But you play can co-op instead of singleplayer. Idk what to say...dont buy FEAR 3, instead play first or second FEAR. Those have atmosphere, nice enemyes, you will get really scared. Thats all from me. 3/10

A lot of people have advised me to avoid it because it's not worth anyone's time, and I gotta admit... they were right. The story in this game is bad, the characters are worse (with Becket having the worst painful death I've ever seen; Harlan being portrayed as the most evil man on Earth with no regrets; Fettel being a straight up SOB; Point Man being no longer faceless yet he says 0 words out loud; Alma looking ok and Jin…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished F.E.A.R. 3. Thoughts: F1 had the most interesting and dynamic gameplay based on the lighting and how enemies respond to you. F2 had that one fucked up part that stays with you but everything else is forgettable. F3 is the most modern FPS game, most coherent story, but the charm is gone.
neutral · AI labelView post →Feels like a black ops 2 mod. I can't stomach any more of it. Fear 2 was already a change I didn't like and this is even further. Even the main menu looks like a CoD game from this era. I'll give it one positive, its the only fear game I didn't have to mess with and just worked out of the box. Everything else about it sucks. Looks worse than fear 1, guns feel WAY worse(even worse than fear 2), can only wield 2 guns at a time, insane choice. Hide behind cover and wait for your health to regen…
