What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 175 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,109 of 1,316 positive).
Some find the gameplay repetitive and the enemies uninspired. [1][2][3]

I've tried it multiple times due to coop promises and "very positive" rating. However, it's quite boring and hollow. In the beginning there are more platforming sections than actual "monster bashing", and given it ain't a platformer, it's a hold-forward-fest of scrolling through dull backgrounds. Just doesn't click.

This game right here - 2.5D Side-scrolling PERFECTION, An absolute PERFECTION. Plays like a dream, its flawless in almost every departement (the important ones :P) and if you like side scrolling games you will not be able to put it down once you start playing. You know how most co-op games are like that mate who always suggests going to the same pub every single weekend? Boring, predictable, zombies everywhere. But This game? It's like that wild friend who suddenly decides we're going salsa dancing in lederhosen - completely unexpected! These slime monsters are more original than my Uncle Mile's excuses for missing family reunions. They're not your standard brain-munching …

"An Underrated Gem That Still Holds Up!" Final Exam is one of those hidden gems that never gets old. The fast-paced action, satisfying combat, and co-op experience make it an absolute blast to play, even years after its release. The game perfectly blends side-scrolling beat 'em up mechanics with explosive gunplay, offering a unique and refreshing take on the genre. The level design is engaging, the enemies are fun …

Final Exam has a unique set of ideas for a story, the graphics are...colorful and the player can choose between four characters who each have their own weapon variety, leveling up system and the game is diverse.... HOWEVER, everything else falls a bit flat from it's repetitive gameplay, average looking backgrounds, still images tell the story, generic enemies/bosses and the music is catchy at times. Summarised from 34 of the 194 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
72% of the 175 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Final Exam. The complaint that keeps coming up: repetitive gameplay and level design. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Initial pre-release feedback of the game was mixed due to the fact that Mighty Rocket Studio originally intended the game as a reboot of the survival horror game Obscure. The negative feedback caused the developer to change the name of the game to Final Exam. Upon full release, the game received "mixed or average reviews" on all platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Matt Beaudette of Hardcore Gamer said of the game, "There are better options available for those simply looking for a cheap sidescroller to play once and forget about. Those who can get invested in learning and mastering a deep combat system, however, will find a lot to like in Final Exam" Smooth Town…

Overall Rating - Mediocre ★★★☆☆ First Impressions When I was looking at Final Exam (FE), I had some reservations due to its review scores. You can play solo or with friends , there's 4 characters to choose from , of course with friends is better. But solo can be a good game too. ------------------------------------------------------ Story: The story is pretty light and not very original , basically zombies. Score: 4 Gameplay: The game feels fluid with mechanics that form a solid product, everything responds well. And very smooth , with weapons…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent arcade game for one player, and for a company of up to four people! Nice graphics, a classic plot of foreign youth horrors about schoolchildren, a sea of weapons and memorable Bosses. As a bonus: This game is an unofficial continuation of the games in the Obscure series. But without incest, sex without conceptions and promises that "THE GAMES IS EVIL". The game is recommended for purchase, since the discount on this product is not rare. The game contains collectible cards for…

neutral · AI labelView post →Game is way ahead of its time. 2D side-scroller + fun combat + online co-op, all that in 2013. Wish we had more games like this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The worst beat em' up I've played in years. The level design is boring, the enemies are uninspiring, and the nitro box escorts are obnoxious tedium that should have been left out of the game completely. If it wasn't for the forced baby sitting of the nitro box when taking it from point A to B it would actually be possible to complete the game in single-player. Instead you can't, because as soon as you pick these boxes up enemies just instantly start spawning, and if you take a hit when holding…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome 2.5D side scrolling action game, still relevant in 2019, its a 2013 game... Really fun, nobody online since its a old game and you will be playing solo only. Its really a good old game )
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun to play with friends for a couple of sessions. The combat feels good, and messing around with different weapons and combos keeps things interesting, but the levels and missions start feeling pretty similar halfway through. Definitely more fun in co-op, especially if you're just looking for some mindless mutant-smashing action.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels nostalgic. Actually 1st time me playing this but the nostalgic feels embrace me hard. Maybe that is a dealbreaker for some people, the "already played this" old game feel made them feel like they did. I love it when a game don't try hard to be a masterpiece, just right on their lane & stay focus. If I got a thing to complain is the hype from the cutscene don't immerse with the gameplay. It feels like the cutscene is unrelated with whatever the player is playing. Even though the context…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played the demo and enjoyed it enough to buy the full game for $0.74 instead of the $10 it used to be over a decade ago. It definitely plays like a 2013 game and the full game seems to be a bit better in the graphics department than the demo. The game gets better as you progress but it's quite repetitive and this makes it difficult to continue playing after you complete levels. It has its moments but there's not a whole lot to keep you going and I will say it's worth the money if you have…

I was blown away at the end by the students who wanted to tell me about how much they enjoyed the class. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A sad attempt at 'ObsCure 3' with all of its identity removed and replaced with what was popular at the time. Castle Crashers meets Left 4 Dead, escort missions galore. The game plays fine, Sometimes Cassie's abilities wouldnt work but theres much better representation of the side scroller beat em up and survival horror. Honestly skip this one
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was surpricingly awesome. Now what the people in the reviews praise to high heavens is the co-op and I didn't play co-op at all, I usually write a review after getting all achievements and I could pop the online co-op achievement by making a public game and finishing the level even though no one joined. As I said, I couldn't co-op with this game but if everyone likes that aspect well I would believe them. Now what I did do, I've played my fair share of 2D beat'em ups and this one…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Action, controls, graphics = Excellent! Gameplay = Monotonous. Repeatedly bashing zombies to death with a baseball bat is a boring, tiresome exercise. Takes like 20x hits to kill one and guns don't do $hit... It could become more enjoyable with skill and weapon upgrades, but I'm not interested in finding out.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Says for up to 4 players but local-co-op is only 2 players very dissapointing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have never uninstalled a game faster. Contains every single video game pet peeve imaginable - the same enemy cut and paste 400 times, guns apparently do no damage, attacks appear with no warning and deal cheap damage, it's impossible to see where you are with all the crap on the screen, enemies are damage sponges that take a hundred hits to take down, and really glaring quality of life issues that compound over time (guns don't automatically reload, you need to press a button each time to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Second game beat in 2026: Final Exam. It's subpar. Some cool and charming stuff, but 4 player co-op so it was fun playing through it with the homies.
negative · AI labelView post →Really repetitive and boring and the combat just feels bad. Didn't want to waste more time on this one. I was hoping I would like this. With friends it's probably fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Arsenal are struggling against Wolves, and Nebrasketball has its biggest game in what feels like years, and I have to give a FINAL EXAM on a SATURDAY WTF
neutral · AI labelView post →A pretty decent co-op platformer where essentially all you have to do is destroy waves of monsters. It's nice that there's some variety in modes and weapons, but it feels like these are purely visual changes. Unfortunately, while there is a story, it's a bit weak. It's also worth noting that the response time is sometimes very slow, preventing combos from working, and achievements in the game are quite difficult. My rating: ✭✭✭✰✰

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring game with suboptimal controls. Nothing to see here, go and play something else.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun game, played it first time on ps3 and finally bought it again on steam
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Briefly fun, but at less than five hours of play time it still manages to overstay its welcome by nearly half that. The tutorial prepares you for managing fights with some degree of finesse, such as attacking an enemy before dodging behind them to continue your assault, but the reality is fights are almost always less controlled in the campaign. There's simply too many enemies coming from every direction to make finesse a viable approach; I ended up just mashing buttons and hoping for the best.…

When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2D Left for Dead, but cartoonish. I'll forgive the high school shoehorning cause of the excellent execution, but its still and illegitimate setting I never want anything in, save Bully. Wait for a sale though, worth maybe $2.50.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The core gameplay loop is okay. It's a beat 'em up with zombies. The problem is that everything else is feels half finished. There are multiple characters, but since scoring is based on damage dealt there's no incentive to do anything but maximize that. Didn't work well with a steam controller -- the right stick aim failed. The character I played had their capstone ability tied to using the right stick. Speaking of controls, they're counter-intuitive and I couldn't rebind them. A lot…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🥀 Why is this game so unpopular? It's a good example of a L4D style game, but in 2.5D. Good co-op missions, simple and convenient controls and combat system, characters LVLing and various melee / firearms weapons (not only visually different). Sometimes the gameplay is mentioned as repetitive (in a zombie game, lol), but it's quite varied and has a funny visual style with comical situations. Considering the general atmosphere of the «Obscure» games, this wasn't the worst development for the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So first off i feel bad not recommending this game. Its not a bad game, the graphics and mechanics are really good, characters are cool and overall its a tidy game. The reason i cant recommend it is because it feels arduous, very repetative and not enough to keep you engaged. i found once i completed a level and got onto the next i just couldnt be bothered with it anymore. Its worth a buy on sale but frankly i dont think ill finish the game because it feels that mundane its not enjoyable

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s very repetitive and can get fairly frustrating. I’d only recommend getting this on sale. Playing with a friend doesn’t really help it all that much either. It’s pretty much just a side scrolling hack & slash/bash at it the end of the day. I got about 6 hours out of this and played the whole thing in co-op. A good co-op partner can make a difference too, I unfortunately did not have a good 1. But it provides some amusement, only some. Only reason it gets a negative from me is because…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played through Final Exam with a buddy online and honestly had a blast, even if I can see why some people bounce off it. Combat feels like basic button mashing at first, but once you unlock skills like air juggles and dash attacks and start chasing big combos (cashing them in before you get hit is weirdly addictive), it opens up a lot. The cartoony slime monsters and the comic book style menus give it real charm, and hunting down the hidden cans and weapons to boost your stats made exploring…
