Firewatch is a 2016 adventure game developed by Campo Santo and published by the developer in partnership with Panic. What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 300 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (90,410 of 99,840 positive).
Players praise the game's atmosphere, story, and voice acting. [1][2][3] Many find the ending anticlimactic or disappointing. [4][5][6] Some note the game is short and lacks gameplay depth. [7][8][9]

It had a lot of good moments especially in the first half, and set up a strong immersive mood and interesting narrative mechanics that I was excited about. But then it developed a red herring story that uses up the rest of the runtime of the game. It was so close to being good, but they focused on side characters that don't matter and don't connect to the main characters. The voice acting is wonderful, and along …

A simulator of spending hours flirting over the radio with your alcoholic boss while developing an absolutely insane conspiracy paranoia in the middle of nowhere, only for the game to remind you that your real adult life problems are still waiting for you back in the city. 10/10.

Im stuck between recommending the game and being mad at it. The story was interesting, the world has just enough intrigue to get me to keep playing it so I can see whats around the corner, and the characters are worthy of listening to. The ending, however, was so anticlimactic that it makes the whole experience seem duller in comparison. was it worth my time? yes. Was it worth 20$? probably not

It takes a long time to realize that, in the end, you can only be who you are. The memories never really leave you — unless, perhaps, you have dementia. You can try to outrun them for a while. Maybe with alcohol. Maybe through an affair. Maybe by spending an entire summer alone in a fire lookout tower. But eventually, the real world catches up. Sometimes, it catches up in the cruelest way imaginable, and... She …

Firewatch is an excellent example of the art of storytelling and theming. I genuinely love how isolating the game feels and the way the story is told through the radio and what you find. Both Rich Sommer (Henry) and Cissy Jones (Delilah) give some of the best voice acting I've heard in a game and the ambience/score is great. The way the threat of fire is used to convey the themes of the narrative is excellent. But …

86% of the 300 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Firewatch. The complaint that keeps coming up: ending feels rushed or anticlimactic. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Firewatch was a critical success and received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Justin Towell of GamesRadar+ wrote that Firewatch was "one of the most enthralling slices of entertainment I've ever experienced", while GameSpot's Scott Butterworth called it a "thoughtful, engrossing experience". Phil Iwaniuk, writing for PCGamesN, felt that while other games can fail to impart a sense of time and place to the player that lasts, Firewatch left an enduring impression of a dreamlike experience. Less positively, PC World's Hayden Dingman called it a game "full of excellent dialogue and breathtaking moments and stunning vistas that ultimately amounts…

positive · AI labelView post →I would like to play a calm game. Dear community, I'm looking for a similar (calm) game like **Portal 1/2 or Firewatch** that I can play on macOS with a similar vibe. The last time I played a game is years ago, and I wish I had at least once a week a nice single-player game that I can play 1-2 hours. =) I enjoyed Portal because I had to plan out what I'm doing before I act (without being pressured to act), the atmosphere of the game was legendary and I liked that little robot following me.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Firewatch is a game about people. Not exaggerated or broken characters just ordinary individuals dealing with the weight of their own lives. At its heart, the game is about escape the ways people run from responsibility, grief, or emotional strain, and how those attempts to disconnect can reveal more about them than the problems they’re avoiding. You play as someone who retreats into the quiet isolation of the Wyoming wilderness, and the game leans into that feeling of getting away from…

I think the piece holds up, and is only more relevant as AI con artists attempt to scrub humanity from even more of our lives.

It's such a cool setting and I can't believe something like Far Cry with it's infinite radio towers and forests hasn't even managed to sell a forest area this well as Firewatch does in only a few hours. The map is small so you get quickly familiar with the few choice routes you like to take and the in-game map which is a real map that the character holds instead of a HUD element feels really intimate…
negative · AI labelView post →Firewatch is one of those games I went into without really knowing what to expect, and honestly, I ended up liking it way more than I thought I would. The gameplay itself is pretty simple. You walk around, explore the forest, find things and talk to Delilah through the radio. But somehow that was enough to keep me interested. Most of the time I wasn't even thinking about the objective, I just wanted to see where the path would take me and hear what Delilah had to say. I really liked the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Cute visuals and strong start, but what a dull ending. Like, I think I get what they're doing, there's something clever about the story, but in the end it all kinda felt meaningless. They say that Firewatch is a story about humans, and I see why; the characters are likely quite realistic for trying to escape their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ lives by making up a huge conspiracy, which, ya know, is something I recognize in today's society too. But having finished the game, I feel kinda empty and unmoved about what…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just finished the game. Doing the free-roam after the ending is just gut-wrenching. Some people are saying that the ending is rushed, and I think that was the point? I kept thinking there would be more after the credits — another day, a hidden scene, something to hold onto. But there wasn't. The story’s over, and that’s all it was ever meant to be. I guess I just didn’t want to let it go yet. Maybe it’s okay, though. Not every game needs another chapter. Some endings are meant to linger —…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Welp, that kinda sucked. I've been wanting to play this game for a while. How could I not? The trailer, the landscapes, the premise, the positive reviews.. it all got me interested. A mystery in the woods? hell yeah! but unfortunately, the game just didn't land for me. Since this is a walking simulator, the gameplay is very simple: follow directions, go from point A to point B and talk to the person on the radio while you do it. Because of this, I expected the story to blow me away or, at the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Pros: Great story. Once the story gets going, the suspense and mystery were gripping. The protagonist was extremely well developed. His relationship with the deuteragonist is raw and made me feel a lot of emotions. The music is good. Cons: The full price of this game simply isn't justified for what it delivers. The graphics are quite minimalist. It's only 4 hours of play time. It's a walking simulator with some item interactions. I was genuinely shocked to learn how big the development team on…

But I ended up liking it so much that I binged it in one sitting. I finished in about 5 hours, but I think it could be finished sooner. It does resemble how reality is sometimes, that you must distract yourself to forget the previous problems you had or currently have. Firewatch has suprised me a lot with it's story, as I didn't know anything about the…

Then, on an off day, I finally decided to finish it, and boy, did it make me question a lot of things. The ending is nothing like the usual fairytale payoff most games condition us to expect; there’s no grand revelation, no perfect romance, and no satisfying “everything worked out” conclusion. Instead, when the credits roll, you’re left sitting there wondering what the…

You could say that's part of the metaphor of it all, but I fear it never dove deep enough to make me realize something profound or be worth the time. The mundanity of the ending reminds me of a certain part of Disco Elysium but with less payoff. IYKYK. I really liked the graphics and the voice acting was good.
