Friendly Persuasion
Directed by William Wyler
The story of a family of Quakers in Indiana in 1862. Their religious sect is strongly opposed to violence and war. It's not easy for them to meet the rules of their religion in everyday life but when Southern troops pass the area they are in real trouble. Should they fight, despite their peaceful attitude? neutral · AI labelView post →Anthony Perkins. 😵💫. I realize he was everyone’s crush. We used to watch this old movie about Quakers called Friendly Persuasion. Bit of a bore yes, but damn I watched the hell out of that movie to see Anthony all dirty and sweaty in the second half. My family thought I just liked the civil war.

While she appeared in such film classics as THE WOMEN and FRIENDLY PERSUASION, the shy & quiet Main became a sensation as the grouchy Ma Kettle in 10 "Ma & Pa Kettle" movies, influencing the 60s wave of CBS "rural" shows. She died at 85.

positive · AI labelView post →Yes, it opens with a really cool shot of New York, if i recall correctly. Interestingly, I supppse it is another Wyler film about poverty. I probably watched it for Bogart when I saw it. There are quite a few Wyler films I haven't seen, though, not least Palme d'Or winning Friendly Persuasion.

Then one day it showed up on YouTube, Free with ads. You could skip most of them after a few seconds. Sadly it's no longer available.

Dorothy McGuire, Anthony Perkins and Marjorie Main co-starred in this story about a peace loving Quaker family during the Civil War. Originally released on the RKO Unique label.
neutral · AI labelView post →Some friends and relatives talked me into watching the old film Friendly Persuasion a couple years ago. I found the portrayal of nineteenth-century Quakers unedifying. Hacksaw Ridge was much more inspiring, even though the film was more violent.

positive · AI labelView post →I saw the movie Friendly Persuasion on TCM last week. The depiction of Amish was interesting. I did like the horse carriage races, but they were nothing like Ben Hur. Reagan even mentioned the movie when negotiating with Gorbachev.
