From Up on Poppy Hill
Directed by Goro Miyazaki
Yokohama, 1963. Japan is picking itself up from the devastation of World War II and preparing to host the 1964 Olympics—and the mood is one of both optimism and conflict as the young generation struggles to throw off the shackles of a troubled past. Against this backdrop of hope and change, a friendship begins to blossom between high school students Umi and Shun—but a buried secret from their past emerges to cast a… From TMDB

It takes a lot for me to like slice-of-life plots but this one was great. The animation/acting was *fantastic.*
positive · AI labelView post →From Up on Poppy Hill was fantastic, but holy shit, I was legitimately not prepared for a pseudo-incest subplot in a Ghibli film.

positive · AI labelView post →Recommending a full year of my favourite animated films, day 77 of 365. Today is my 278th favourite animated film, From Up on Poppy Hill. Easily Goro Miyazaki's best film, Poppy Hill is best at it's most low key. (I think Goro's main failing as a storyteller is he tries too hard which leads to...
positive · AI labelView post →Showed my wife From Up On Poppy Hill tonight and we both ended up all teary-eyed I love that movie, man
positive · AI labelView post →Don't forget Takahata's films too! Wonderful movies. I think the trouble with Earthsea is that it was trying to squeeze many books into one film, and was Goro Miyazaki's directorial debut. The film just didn't get a lot of runway to work with imo. I like From Up On Poppy Hill a lot tho!
positive · AI labelView post →The Wind Rises (Hayao) From Up on Poppy Hill (Goro) PS to ninety of you: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is not a Ghibli film.
neutral · AI labelView post →#bales2025moviechallenge - first love From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) I love the glimpse of life in post war Japan of the 60s in this unique Ghibli film. I also love the mature and restrained intensity of the high school first love story of the 2 main characters.
positive · AI labelView post →I have 1(one) film downloaded on my phone 4 emergency viewing in times of no data/service, & it's From Up On Poppy Hill [2011]. 4 me, it's a chance 2 slow down, breathe, romantize the domestic, appreciate having my basic needs met, and believe in love.🫂💖

neutral · AI labelView post →We’re going back to the #StudioGhibli well for the next spot on my 200 favorite #movies list, from 2011 it’s From Up on Poppy Hill. This is a part romance, part slice of life film that blends the two to absolute perfection. Like @calamityjane516.bsky.social it always makes me smile! #filmsky
positive · AI labelView post →From Up on Poppy Hill: Second film by Goro Miyazaki, the film focuses on a group of Yokohama teens look to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Also Japan shifts to modernization. Not the best Studio Ghibli film but far from the worst.
neutral · AI labelView post →Ranking the 9 Ghibli films not directed by Isao Takahata or Hayao Miyazaki. #5 is From Up On Poppy Hill. This is EASILY Goro’s best movie. A charming coming of age romantic movie with a (better) story of kids trying to rescue their clubhouse. Very nostalgic. The plot point to keep the two apart is…
positive · AI labelView post →My favorite Studio Ghibli film has to be From Up on Poppy Hill because not only are its fashion aesthetics and its soundtrack peak but it also gave me the CRAZIEST plot whiplash ever, first time watching it made me feel like I was hit by a truck 💀
positive · AI labelView post →I started on it some time ago and after a few minutes switched to From Up on Poppy Hill, as I was in the mood for a more wholesome Ghibli movie.
positive · AI labelView post →Incredibly excited to be hosting a community movie night on Saturday 🥰 From Up on Poppy Hill is my favourite Ghibli film and I always love sharing it with new people!! It also has a song that I listened to a lot as a kid 💖
positive · AI labelView post →Slowly slowly getting through the Studio Ghibli films, and I've seen enough to recognize a pattern in me. The more grounded in reality a film is, the more I like it. I don't like much magicy stuff. Howl's Moving Castle is a huge no for me. But we're watching From Up on Poppy Hill and it's wonderful.

neutral · AI labelView post →When compared to the non-mythical Miyazaki's we've seen (Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Wind Rises, Whisper of the Heart), this is one of the strongest ones. To that end, I'm giving "From up On Poppy Hill" a 8.5/10. A good, solid Ghibli film. #FromUpOnPoppyHill #YearofGhibli
positive · AI labelView post →Watch #5: From Up on Poppy Hill. Not the most spectacular of Ghibli movies, but what can I say? Still a Ghibli movie, still emotional and looking beautiful.
neutral · AI labelView post →Finally got a little time to watch this week. Wrapped up my HBO Max journey by finishing the last couple movies I don’t have on disc. Turns out four of them I had picked up on previous Black Friday sales and forgot haha. Belle: I enjoyed it and the animation was very good. But probably my least favorite Mamoru Hosoda film. Wolf Children and Mirai are easily my favorites, while this felt like mostly a retread of Summer Wars. Where it went different than Summer Wars, especially the more…
neutral · AI labelView post →I didn't really "get" Pom Poko, although Earwig and the Witch was even less enjoyable. The obvious answer is of course the Earthsea movie. Between that and Earwig, it's made me - unfairly, given what I've read about it - reluctant to watch From Up on Poppy Hill because Goro Miyazaki directed it
neutral · AI labelView post →But it’s not just the rift between father and son this week – FROM UP ON POPPY HILL is an impressive movie in its own right, and we have much to discuss And it just so happens that fathers and sons also factors heavily into the film. Coincidence?
neutral · AI labelView post →And that was every single film directed by Goro Miyazaki. From Up On Poppy Hill was definitely his best movie and Tales From Earthsea was his worst. Earwig and the Witch, I think it depends on how much you can tolerate the animation and the main character.

positive · AI labelView post →Tonight I watched From Up on Poppy Hill and it’s crazy how quickly a movie can go from cozy to stressful back to cozy again
positive · AI labelView post →From Up on Poppy Hill i never see anyone talk about the film but i remember when i first watched it and just fell in love with the bright and up lifting feeling of the film despite the surrounding war
positive · AI labelView post →Hayao was also involved in writing the next film, From Up on Poppy Hill (コクリコ坂から), a manga adaptation directed by his son Goro. This was seen as a bit of a reconciliation for the two, but not without arguments. Many regarded the film as a big improvement over Goro’s debut. [9/29]
neutral · AI labelView post →I’ve been watching the remaining few Ghibli films I have yet to see. I can see why ‘From Up on Poppy Hill’ (2011) is considered a little uhhhh given its midway plot point… I mean, it feels like they could’ve added tension in a different way that wouldn’t have detracted from an otherwise good film.
neutral · AI labelView post →People of Bluesky. Let's get to know each other better. What is your favorite movie? I have to go with "From Up on Poppy Hill", a Movie from Studio Ghibli. I had Tears in my Eyes quite often, because of the Music and Scenes. There is a Special Place for it in my Heart. #filmsky #StudioGhibli
positive · AI labelView post →From Up On Poppy Hill is a beautiful movie. Earwig is garbage though.
positive · AI labelView post →And that's it for "From Up on Poppy Hill". Another one of the "Grounded" Ghibli films in the series. Goro Miyazaki proves that he's capable of making his own legendary movies. Potential incest aside this is a good movie with a sweet lesson about respecting the past. #FromUpOnPoppyHill #YearofGhibli
positive · AI labelView post →People genuinely only see what they want to see. If they're biased against the film then they probably aren't going to dive so deeply into it. I find that the Ghibli* films I like most tend to draw a 🤷 from people (From Up On Poppy Hill and The Wind Rises being my top 2). *Ghibli, not just Miyazaki
positive · AI labelView post →Had to scroll too far to find Ghibli recs. I don't know if either of those are good recs for OP's question. Both have female protagonists. The Baron and Howl both are mysterious and have agendas; they're not really role models. Spirited Away also falls in this category. Ponyo and Castle in the Sky have admirable male protagonists, though they are not royalty (the girls in those stories are royalty). Princess Mononoke has a protagonist who is a prince, but it's not really a kid movie. The…
