Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 178 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (512 of 577 positive).
Players praise the game's beautiful art style and emotional story about deforestation. [1][2][3] Some find the swinging mechanics fun but the gameplay repetitive and short. [4][5][6] A few reviewers report frustration with controls and lag. [7][8]

The amount of negative reviews left by literal children and people who need to shoot other players to have fun in video games in absurd. This game is short, simple and spreads a message about how human beings are destroying wildlife. The game wants to tell us that humans are cruel. But I guess we know that already. Buy the game to be a gibbon for an hour or two and swing from tree to tree. Finished the main story already. But haven't started on the Liberation mode yet. Did I enjoy it? Eh, it was alright. I kinda liked just swinging to move forward until it got repetitive. I'd get it at a discount or in a bundle.

Writing this review just as I finished the story mode and tried out the liberation mode. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing this game, I honestly feel hopeless and frustrated. I really struggled to nail down the game mechanics and spent most of the time on the ground. Even once I got the hang of it, the game was laggy and, you guessed it, meant that I was back on the ground. I wish there was an option that allowed you to move backward. Sometimes I'd just miss the next swing by a hair, and it would have been nice to walk 3 steps back and try again. The story is good, but it is very sad. I appreciate…

neutral · AI labelView post →Amazing. Simple, pretty visuals, and simple mechanics, and a gripping story that has no words and still caused me to gasp out loud at least twice. Frustrating, but for the right reasons, spoilers regarding that below. There are portions of this where you will get frustrated that you can not reach areas that you want to. The game sets this up well, allowing you ample time to grow accustomed to your freedom among the jungle canopy before locking you in the stuffy confines of human developments.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Personally I’ve always loved how they don’t show you people. Their pilot descriptions in the arena have always made you use your imagination as to what they’d look like. Along with the emblem design/AC. But yeah a lot of mats are larger than people think. In-game the Gibbon is even a little taller.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bunch of monotonous swinging sequences that drag on way too long with a cliche story
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's really boring with a very dull and repetitive gameplay loop. It looks nice and it has a story, so that's good. I guess my expectations were too high for this one. It's so boring that I don't even want to grind for the easy achievements. There's barely anything here to hold the attention of people who like parkour games, and for people who don't like parkour games this is a must-skip.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The swinging mechanic is great, and you can tell the developers really cared for the product and message. Unfortunately, movement/traversal felt mostly frustrating to me. + Great swinging mechanic + Branching traversal routes (always left to right, but branching and joining vertically) + Mostly great graphics, rich level design and background world * Although it becomes a bit ridiculous story-wise, well executed message and (in the middle) atmosphere - Frustrating after the initial jungle area…

I gets repetetive, so that this is a pretty short game feels fitting. It does not overstay its welcome and tells the story effectively in this time. There is also a post-game mode after the story, which is fun but personally it cant grab me enough to do the entirety of it, especially since you can only go forward and don't turn around, so if you missed…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So much mindless fun in the beginning! It’s literally just swinging through the trees and then BOOM! Everything comes crashing down and I’m stress leaping through the fires of the forest while achievement hunting. Overall, brilliantly unique and a fun, thought provoking experience.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Gibbon: Beyond the Trees" casual and relaxing but short game, from the same Austrian indie developers that gave us the beautiful "Old Man's Journey". Gibbon has the same level of amazing art. The story is decent, touching on sensitive deforestation issues. The main story is fairly short and can be completed in 2 hours. The Liberation mode adds replayability and daily leaderboard was a nice addition. Yet many complain that the price is a bit steep for the amount of content. Full price $13, on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the verdant canopies of the ancient Asian rainforests, where the symphony of nature hums a tune of untouched wilderness, the gibbons reigned with a grace unmatched by their primate cousins. This story, woven from the whispers of leaves and the songs of the forest, tells why the gibbons are regarded as the best of apes. Gibbons, the acrobats of the arboreal world, swing with an elegance that turns the dense forest into a grand theater of aerial performance. Their mode of locomotion, called…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks nice, but otherwise it's boring and pedantic. The gameplay novelty wears off after 10 minutes and 30 minutes later you wonder why you're still playing. This is one of those titles that pretends to be a game until people realize that its gameplay is literally less dynamic than Pong, at which point it becomes an "experience" instead. It's the kind of experience in which the dev team feels compelled to inform us before we've even started playing that their trite and shallow observations on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate so much that I'm marking this as "not recommended" because it's such an important message and the art is beautiful. But I don't recommend it as a game because it's not--it's a PSA you can play. There's a beautifully sad storyline but you have approximately three moves and no control over direction--you keep going no matter what, which is irksome when it comes to the second half of rescuing creatures because if you pass right over them, welp, too bad. The mechanics are fine, just…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful art style and a noble cause, but as a game, I can't recommend it, sorry ☹ The gameplay loop is repetitive, and I loathe tedious achievements, especially when they depend on RNG.

positive · AI labelView post →From the videos I was expecting a platform game and/or maybe mouse-aimed swinging game. This is more like one of those "runner" games, but instead of pressing one key to jump, it's mostly holding one key to not fall and *letting go* to jump. I like platform games and mouse-aimed swinging games. I don't like single button runner games, or even, in this case, games with two buttons that don't really have much behavioral difference between them. To be fair, a bit later it also introduces a third…

Humans start shooting at me, doomed..? Really felt so free in the beginning, made me feel so much joy When the scenery started changing, there was much tension and suspense My heart was broken, but hope still remains. The swinging mechanics take time to get used to, and getting stuck at the ground can be demotivating, but once I figured out how to do…
