Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between

AdventureCasualIndie

Developer Silverstring Media Inc.

Glitchhikers is a surreal journey through the spaces between places. A late night drive, a deserted airport lounge, a moonlit walk through an empty park, a quiet carriage on an overnight train. Who will you meet? What will you talk about? Where will the journey take you? Find yourself along the way. From the Steam store page

This game is like being slightly drunk at a college dorm party. The ambient is nice, there is a neon-DIY-decoration in the room and some sombre 80s synth music in the background, yet, you’re stuck with this second semester philosophy student talking about how everything is actually affected by entropy, that the light that reaches your eyes while stargazing is actually from stars that are long dead and did you ever …

I find myself coming back Glitchhikers at critical junctures in my life. I've played it after the most difficult set of finals I've ever taken, after getting diagnosed with a chronic illness, after the death of a pet, among other times. This isn't the kind of game I pick up casually whenever or play for a long time. It's more like the moment I get to exhale after holding my breath. The various journeys you go on and …

Calm vibes of driving with a friend and idly talking about life. Of sitting on a train, watching the world go by, and remembering that every other person on the train is living their own life. Of letting a walking trail take you wherever it will for the sake of a journey. Not a game, but a tool for introspection. Drive/walk and speak to characters/things about what makes up life. Not exceptionally deep, but incredibly worthwhile to contemplate what it brings up. This is about what you bring to it, not what it provides. Take care of yourself.

Two big thumbs up while sipping an old fashioned from a comfy chair. When speaking with people outside of video game circles, or students new to computer science, etc., I present a list of "must play video games." These aren't necessarily the big blockbuster titles, but are representatives of what could be done with games that couldn't be done in other mediums. "What makes games more special than movies or books? What pushes the state of the art, from a philosophical or artistic perspective?"…

I was able to play this before release. As the convenience store attendant will tell you, don't approach this in a goal-oriented way or somply try to access all the content - to do so misses the point. This is a series of spaces and contexts for reflection, with dialogue that serves as gentle prompts. There are a handful of games that allow you to spend time just vibing, but I cannot think of any others like this one, in which quiet time to let your own mind wander is baked into the core loop.…

Not my cup of tea. I guess you're supposed to enjoy the weird and random conversations the developers thought up, but I just really didn't. I felt less like I was exploring and more felt I was talking to a philosophy 101 student who glanced at SCP briefly. This game honestly lives and dies in its writing, because there's not much else, and I didn't find the writing to be anything special. Sorry.

Actually I'm disappointed... The grafic and the concept look interesting BUT! As a narrative game I would say that the language is not attractive and beatiful at all (maybe it's just for me a non-native speakers? ). What about introspective and philosophical side? The agromentation and the answers are very limited, superfluous and biased. Acutally it's not fair that I can just hear your point of view and then answering just with few words which I'm not even agree....and the you start again. I…

Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between is a one-note philosophical conversation game. While the visuals and general atmosphere are enjoyable, the characters are cardboard cut-outs. Each character is one dimensional and overtly moralizing over an agenda, often on topics directly related to contemporary culture. Regardless of my own personal sympathies to any one character's agenda, the dialogue choices feel impactless. The dialogue does occasionally stumble into an interesting idea to consider. The…

The idea for this game is great- calm introspection with atmospheric settings. Good if you're just getting into philosophy for the first time in life. HOWEVER. man. does this game take way too long to get to anything. You spent 40 minutes in each journey to encounter 4 characters who have 2 mins worth of conversation. Your encounters are RNG based so you encounter the same person with the same conversation over and over again whilst you wait to find that last person you would like to talk to.…

I went into the store and spoke to the clerk and then 30 minutes had passed before I got out of the store. In that time I had got myself a bottle of water, plugged in a fan, lit some incense, and dug out a suit for 2 funerals tomorrow. The first night I played this, I went to bed late and had to explain to my partner the wonderful experience I had just had. This is the game some of us really need.

This is an interesting one, while I did enjoy it and I do think it's worth playing, I think it's also very mixed bag, and in a very earnest attempt to be as accessible as possible, it almost undercuts itself. The point of the game is to have interesting, somewhat profound conversations with strangers, from a variety of worlds on a variety of topics and a variety of viewpoints. It wants to lead you to introspection, and while it's not necessarily bad at that, it ends up being a bit flat if…

I was talking to people on a train. one was an artist in a wheelchair. "I went to a different galaxy and they were wheelchair accessible because they weren't horrible people." "That's cool." I said. "But wouldn't you rather be able to walk, if that becomes possible?" "No," the artist responded, "the entire world needs to conform to my disability. If they don't, that's called eugenics and that's a horrible thing." There was no way to discuss this point, as if the game wanted to end the…

I completed the train and road journeys. The "hikers" encountered reminded me of people I actively avoid in life. They say a lot of words and make a lot of references to lead you to believe they're deep, but they aren't saying anything at all. I spent most of the time played just rolling my eyes.

From that perspective, it could be argued I'm a little biased, but even so, it's the kind of experience I'm glad is out there getting made. The main gameplay of Glitchhikers is of you, in a first-person space, navigating a liminal space and interacting with the beings within it. These beings will talk to you about life and death, privacy and technology, stories and wonder. If you have met one of these ‘hikers’ once, you will see how each of their conversations will go. There is some narrative customisation and choice, but ultimately, you will not be able to change or sway these characters’ views on anything. Nor will they usually…

Fun to look at; some interesting thoughts and conversations. Far more narrative heavy than I thought, but the dialogue is generally interesting and relatable. I do wish that other hikers we meet had significantly more dialogue so that if we run in to the same folks in a specific journey (such as the train), they would have additional things to say instead of repeating. Overall, an intriguing experience, and I have never played anything quite like it.

This one is just straight up boring. I hoped for some interesting stories or at least something to make me think for a second, but all the things I have read or heard in this game are taken from somewhere else and are rewritten to sound sophisticated at best. The niche this game serves is kinda better served by reality. This game has too much content. I greatly appreciate the idea of games as "spaces" but this is too noisy (content-wise) to elicit the right feelings. Of the three games I bought in a batch, this is the least remarkable, and the only one that removed the demo (coincidence, I think not).

a wonderfully beautiful game that has made me cry like a baby. It's just a really nice experience. One of those: "waking up t 4 am to watch the a meteor shower with your friends on a summer night" kind of feelings. One of those: "crying in the train because of a good book you've just finished while the spring sun is shining down on you" kind of feelings. One of those: "coming home from something fun and dancing in the rain to your favourite music" kind of feelings.

I don't know how or why, but whenever I get depressed about an upcoming big change in my life or whenever I feel lost, I come back to this game. It's hard to explain, but this always makes me feel better and more sure of myself. It's therapeutic.

I played this obsessively on the switch to wind down can really heavily recommend. If only there was more to it and some more variation on the type of music would be great
