What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 188 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (776 of 1,091 positive).
Players enjoy the game's concept of guiding a religion and developing disciples. [1][2][3] Some find the auto-battler combat and shallow depth repetitive. [4][5][6]

The concept of this game is amazing. Creating a religion, guiding your followers, helping them develop and influencing their belief system holds so much potential. I love a lot of its aspect. Unfortunately the core gameplay loop is really boring. It is a simple auto battler. Yeah, there are different classes and whatnot to pick from, but none of them feel very engaging. Even those previously mentioned interesting …

Godhood isn't a God simulation game. The depth of the game seems vast at first, but very quickly becomes very shallow. Some of the most interesting parts of the game are poorly explored, while other parts are ignored entirely. Combat: Combat is a 3v3 that utilizes an auto-battling system that is completely out of your control when the battle begins. Your influence comes from raising the stats and changing the …

This is a fun little sim game. You essentially just guide your people and develop your religon. You can boost certain attributes of your followers, however the actual fighting is up to them. The customization is good and the various types of religons you can choose open the game up to a varying amount of runs. I reccomend if you like sim games and autochess type combat.

Basically a round-based resource-allocation game where you play a deity guiding of a cult that aspires to become a religion. A wide and interesting variety of choices are available in terms of general ethos and specific beliefs and traditions, some of which have really cool in-game effects. "Combat," which can vary from a straight up brawl to a philosophical debate, unfolds without input from the player based on …

A strategy auto battler where you play a god developing a religion, and grow your disciples to go out and spread your word through conquering or conversion. There's a lot of depth and a lot of different decisions to make in terms of how you grow your religion and your characters stats, with different religion types and classes and different abilities, and different buildings and religious tenets and traditions to …

60 of 213 · most liked firstThe game is freaking amazing, it is fun, it is easy to learn. But i do not recommend it. There are several things the game never explains to you, such as the Combo System. Every battle is 3 vs 3, and you must prepare a lot for each encounter. For example: You have a magician with a passive ability that gives them a double turn whenever another allied character performs a dark element attack... But you also have a warrior that has a passive ability that forces them to attack any enemy with low…

I had quite a good time finally giving this game more than a passing glance. Looking forward to eventually playing Silksong even more now.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do want to note that I am aware that the developer Abbey Games downsized as a company(in other words fired a lot of people) during the development of this game which most likely significantly affected the end-result of the game. I find the game to be too simplistic, and I think that it could be a lot more involved and interactive than what it currently is. It is an auto-battler with some slight management/input required from the player. It consists of you upgrading stats and every so often…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Show wolf art 🐺! Seeing Amaterasu reminded me of my old Beast Eidolon Pathfinder Character who sought to start a cult and eventually Ascend to Godhood in order to get revenge on the monster who had killed her original deity. I miss that game.
neutral · AI labelView post →This game has a problem I cannot ignore above any others. You can't adjust the size of UI elements, or even the text beyond a certain point. I'd love to love this game, but in a game where menus are everything, I need to be able to read them easily to have a pleasant expirience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay loop is painfully dull. The rock-paper-scissors system is split into five factors instead of three, but with most just ignoring one another. Level grinding is punishing and forces you to repeat auto-battler simulators over and over again. The abilities you can unlock for characters are arbitrary and there's no way to manipulate the game so certain abilities are/are not more likely to be triggered. For how simplistic the game is, the cause seems to be too much content in the game. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this, however it really is only a basic game mechanic loop. Its unfortunate that the video advertising this game has more story depth than the game itself. If I could refund this I would,

Summary of my plot so far: Started as the party meeting up in a hospital, which suddenly got attacked by a CULT. The hospital had a enchantment on it powered by a **big fucking crystal** that made everyone unable to do violence unless holding a specific charm (which all staff had.) The Hospital Director allowed this cult in and also gave them the charm, with the goal of…
neutral · AI labelView post →It's an interesting offramp from Reus (excellent) towards a game something like Cultist Simulator. There are three main reasons to avoid this game unless you the defects interest you: 1) it becomes excel work, 2) XCOM RNG can be tough 3) too much lore to learn. I recommend playing Reus which is similar and superior. There really are too many stats in this game for the UI to sort meaningfully. This is not about hating stat-based games. This is about the structure of the game and how it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Graphically interesting, but I just got pretty bored, pretty fast.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried to get into this a couple times and just couldn't wring any joy out of the experience. The auto-battle experience makes it very clear how much time is spent just kind of sitting and waiting for things to happen. Then you go back to the holy site, click the same couple things a few times.. and back to auto battle. I couldn't find any way to feel connected or invested to what was happening, because it was almost completely happening without me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did you not understand the part about a bagel? A pizza bagel? Man has many achievements, but the pizza bagel will be our chariot into Godhood.
neutral · AI labelView post →Interesting premise that ultimately is just too shallow an experience to recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Revenge on @worfrozhenko.bsky.social. After the events of the game, Gale ran off to pursue Godhood while Tav and Karlach settled in Reithwin. It appears that Gale has some regrets. He had his chance. #VPFight #VPforDummies
neutral · AI labelView post →I actually like this game a lot, it just needs to be refined a lot more than what ultimately ended up happening. Hopefully, now that we have Reus 2, maybe we can get a Godhood 2? Or at least a DLC accompanied by a free update or something. I don't know if the game is worth full price, but since it's half off over the summer sale I would still recommend checking it out if you like the general concept of the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m coming back to this game, time and time again hoping I will finally have fun. Sadly everytime I feel disappointed. Auto-battler feels very boring and it feels very mechanical and it’s not fun to look at. The art is nice and the customisation is cool, the best part is making your godhood icon but that's it. Everything functions without you, you make very little decisions.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I came to this game thinking it was a god sim, but it isn't. The game revolts around levelling up and hiring some fighters to defeat some rival tribes in 3v3 combats. You have to carefully think on which skills you are going to place the different skill points you get and which characters to level up, but that's pretty much it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thought I'd enjoy it. Once i got it, I didn't even play it a full hour because i hate the auto battles. Really regret getting it and feels like its a waste of money
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All aspects of this game feel boring and unrewarding except for the writing, which is well done. For me this game falls short of it's great premise.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is nothing inherently wrong with Godhood, but would I recommend a friend buy it? No. It starts out really interesting, but as it gets to the back levels, I find the "combat" kinda dull to watch, and losing one is just a boring road bump that only happened because I tried a martyrdom bonus and it didn't work out, so I re-load. I would have a lot more fun just seeing how the different combinations of beliefs and practices add up for different endings, but going through 12 hours of "okay"…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not remotely what I thought it would be. Very mechanistic and not enjoyable. Plays more like a spreadsheet than an enjoyable game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ascending to Godhood not for ultimate power or immortality or anything I just wanna fuckin play my video game without worrying about food or money or depression
neutral · AI labelView post →I can't get into this game no matter how many times I try. It may be me, because it looks pretty and it plays pretty. But I find it boring and taxing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really tried to like this game, i love Abbey games that have most if not all their games. But this one is a miss for sure. My critic of this game is its way to random and no way to overcome certain fights with certain play styles. The only way to manage the random was to go all offense to the point where fights end in 1 or 2 attacks. The problem then arises when trying to explore some of the other styles, that just feels awful to play and little to no way to avoid a game over. To the point…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: So after writing my initial review (bellow) I have continued to play the game. Clearing on multiple religions proved more interesting to me then I expected. If the designers see this, I would buy DLC content and/or would love to see a community workshop opened for Godhood. The skeleton is there for something great. --- (original review bellow) At the end of the day I bought it on sale and enjoyed it. I'll probably do one maybe two more runs. The game is lacking the intense depth that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Godhood, developed and published by Abbey Games, approaches the god-game genre with a perspective that feels unexpectedly human. Instead of casting the player as an all-powerful architect of worlds, the game begins with humility—your divinity is young, unproven, and worshipped by only a small handful of hopeful disciples. The world does not revolve around you yet. You must earn devotion, shape belief, and guide followers with influence rather than direct command. This premise establishes a tone…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun, inventive, and strategic. a good bit of replay ability as well. all round enjoyable and peaceful gaming experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The biggest problem with Godhood are probably the expectations peaople have towards it, and probably Abbey Games didn't foresee that a lot of people are still waiting for a proper heir to Populous. This is not this kind of game. Godhood is a single player auto-battler with management components between battles. Imagine Renowned Explorers with more focus on optimising stats, and less on the actual combat (or parley, dependent on your approach). With that out of the way, the game is competent…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It seems like a mobile game. It was pretty boring and repetitive and the building doesn't seem to matter much.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →so, first of, i do actually like the game. If my 90+ hours in it didnt already say so, but that aside i do agree with most of these reviews, good and bad. So not to echo the others i will add my own little gripes with it. As someone who really does enoy more hands of gameplay, being a big fan of games like TABS, world box and a lot of stretegy games that let you make yoru own faction or characters like stellaris. With this said, i now get to my first gripe. I would actually want a lot more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Abbey Games, first and foremost. I did steer clear of this game for a very long time, however. Got it for a good enough price on sale to finally try it out ($27 base is insanity), and see how they "went wrong". At times, the game is surely dull and unsatisfying. A handful of ideas thrown around, with minimal depth injected into them. Yet, there still exists such a magic in their game design that can be found even in what may be considered their worst. It's got a lot of DNA from multiple…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an Auto-battler of a team of 3 disciples With a very elaborate? diffuse? bloated? way of adding and upgrading stats to these disciples. No keyboard-settings option => finger playing audience
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thanks everyone that stopped by and watched! It was the most viewers I've had to date! BUT WE'RE NOT DONE YET! Join me Thursday at 3 PM PST on twitch as we enter our second loop of the game. Who knows? Maybe we'll ASCEND TO GODHOOD.
neutral · AI labelView post →Unfortunately not all that good compared to Abbey's other games. The mechanics are basic - while there is a "Rock-Paper-Scissors" mechanic like in REIS, here it is completely trivialized and has little to no effect, and most of the time it does it boils down to "extra damage". The main way of progressing the characters is just raw stats instead of the abilities, some of which are just carbon copies of others, i.e. some mental class has "extra crit chance" dark ability, there will be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to enjoy this, Abby games have generally made solid little games, but this is one is a miss for me. Got it on sale and honestly I'd still say avoid, certainly at the full £20 pricetag. At once needlessly complex and painfully one dimensional, the game's worst sin is that it is just criminally boring. There are so many things thrown at you in the settlement-building screen that seem to barely mean anything, or if they do it's just an incremental shift in value to some arcane statistic,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played it for about an hour. I did not understand what i was doing and still won everything. This game feels like a mobile game. I'm not sure if I was missing something but this game is just plain bad. it's not a god game but a game where you play 'god' even thou there is nothing for you to really do apart from mindless game play with no real idea behind anything.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good game. Gameplay is a little shallow but the loop is fun. It would be an A+ mobile game. Seriously Devs, bring this to mobile. Its worth the asking price but its a very solid buy if you can get it on sale for under 20 bucks.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Give it a try! This is a fun God game! Details: Don't trust reviews from people who only played a couple hours of this game. Listen to people who actually played it. THIS IS A VERY CUTE AND FUN GAME. It does have auto battles, yes. But this game is about resource management and strategic evolution of your disciples. What effort you put into developing your weird little worshipers is what you get back. I recommend starting on easy. I didn't and the game was very balanced and playable…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The store page gave me the impression that this would be a proper, classic god game. It isn't. It's an autobattler with a god theme. From what I played it looks decent enough but I'm not going to recommend this as I feel the storepage is deceptive.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →not the publisher's best
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a "god game" in the sense of shaping the physical world, more like dictating the values, traditions, and actions of your own tribe of worshippers. Wonderfully flavorful ways to build your religion, little events that reflect the choices you've made, diverse god-abilities and worshipper classes that keep gameplay interesting, and a battle system whereby swaying the watching crowd works just as well as breaking the opponents you're facing. Make a cult of pleasure and lust, make a religion of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had zero expectations going into this game, and perhaps that's why I enjoyed it. Its a rogue-like God builder game with decent variety. The only real control you have is over what gets built and upgraded in your village and how you train your disciple's stats before you send them off to auto-battle. Everything else is luck of the draw and making do with what you are randomly provided. And all of that...is good enough for me. This is nothing like Reus or any other God game. Definitely doesn't…

While he participated in the War-Game, many believing it held his whole attention and that he was an eternally trapped participant because of the hostages his mortal blessing and brother were. He had turned his attention to fixing that
neutral · AI labelView post →This game has rich rock paper scissors mechanic with some management but when the RNG battles come in to play all agency is lost. I took about 8 hours to min max and complete a single run. I cant recommend this game due to the heavy amount of RNG with no options to play the game its turns into a auto battler.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seems like there's a lot of systems in this game that aren't fully fleshed out that turn this game into a half finished watered-down Darkest Dungeon. You can train up multiple 5 characters and have them built differently. There's something like a dozen classes, but you can only have 5 characters so, ideally, you'd have to think about which characters you want and whether you want to sacrifice them to get new dudes, but the difficulty scaling makes it so that it barely even matters. If it did…
