What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 243 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (19,156 of 21,509 positive).
Players praise the game as a solid colony sim with a 3D Rimworld feel. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the lack of a family or lineage system as a major flaw. [4][5][6][7] Some players find the combat and AI mechanics frustrating and incomplete. [8][9][10]

NEEDS a family mechanic. This is a massive, fundamental flaw. The entire concept of "medieval" society is built on the backbone of bloodlines, dynasties, and family units. When you think of a medieval settlement, you think of building a homestead for a family, passing down a blacksmith trade from father to daughter, or cementing alliances. Stripping that out doesn't just feel like a missing feature; it actively guts …

Castle/Village Builder, Colony Sim, Settler Survival, Castle Defence, it's all of them at once, and in my opinion finds a real solid middle ground between all of them, and better yet, the game includes a ton of options in order for you to customise each playthrough as you see fit! What really made me recommend this game however, are the devs, it's a small concentrated team, who genuinely listen to their community. …

A settlement game that made me care about every single settler. After 179 hours, Going Medieval has become one of my favourite colony management games. I wanted to share both what I love about it and a few ideas that I hope the developers might consider. I've always been a fan of RTS games, starting with Age of Empires III. One thing I always felt those games lacked was the importance of each individual unit. …

6/10 Great idea but a lot of incomplete concepts and poorly thought out mechanics. - Game seems to be in limbo on combat and diplomacy. Both have only the most simplistic of features but not enough depth to make them interesting parts of the game. - No apparent means of diplomacy, apparently forcing a hostile state with most factions as angering them seems to be the only way to obtain people. - AI behavior of …

Over 4000+ hours on a single survival save from 0.10.4, updated it with new saves to now we are at 1.1.XX so yea worth the money and the time. They actually made a good game that takes mods. Game plays as Rimworld in 3d. Not more I need to say other than if you like Rimworld you will like this no doubt.

A more in-depth review and explanation for the old review is below the bullets points and final thoughts. POSITIVES: -More of a building game than colony sim if you enjoy that. -3D building and multiple style choices allows for interesting and integrate constructs -Siege defense COULD be cool, if it actually works correctly especially with ballistas,…

When you think of a medieval settlement, you think of building a homestead for a family, passing down a blacksmith trade from father to daughter, or cementing alliances. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are the bones of incredible game in here but it's saddled with trollish developers blindly ripping off other titles with no understanding of their own game's differentiators. It's been frustrating watching this game lazily drip adding Dwarf Fortress mechanics. A year ago the combat wasn't amazing but it was at least enjoyable. Then they started watching players on youtube that were cheesing it and set out to destroy those tactics, as if personally offended by them, and it ruined the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One major issue with Going Medieval is the absence of any family or lineage system, and that omission ends up weakening the entire premise. A medieval setting is inherently tied to kinship, inheritance, and generational continuity, so leaving that out makes the world feel disconnected from its own theme. A believable medieval settlement is not just a collection of individuals; it is built around households, trades passed through generations, and relationships that evolve over time. Without…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love a-lot of things about this game particularly the 3D building aspect, the perk system and the advanced start option for pawn building. Having said that I don't like… Melee combat, it is god awful. -It seems an unlimited number of pawns can occupy a single voxel meaning chokepoints are pointless… -The “Stand Ground” option for pawns auto turns off when an enemy approaches so good luck defending from the top of that ladder… or better yet from behind that reinforced door,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay so... Both the good and bad reviews here basically say it all. I do love this game, to a point. That point starts right about the time I've got my town more or less set up. There's no dynasty, no reason to care about one character over another, the NPCs have more of a functional story to them than your original villagers do. The only villager I care at all about, in my most recent build, is this lady who showed up nearly dead with the intolerant religious faction hunting her down.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an instance of needing a maybe button, but since we don't have that, I have to lean towards NOT RECOMMEND. Reasons: The game is interesting, its not a rimworld clone like others says, its a completely different play style and setting. There is terraforming, water manipulation, and z-levels, meaning you can build basements, tunnels, etc. Very fun things, I really enjoyed. I have had fun playing this, and I'm sure you could as well, but I don't see any reason to put more time into this…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, I played ALOT. But i got some negative stuff to get off my chest. The game Is VERY slow phase sometimes and i think i realised why. Even with Micro managing the villagers. the AI sucks. Im sorry to say it, but pathfinding is really horrible. let me give you a example, mountain map, trying to build a house. next to a existing mountain wall. Everything goes fine, you make a ladder next to it so the villager can easy access the sides, if need to for walls. But... then comes the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How is this 1.0 with the litteral and actually worst pathfinding I've seen in a colony sim game. Your builders will put the resources of a single floor tile on the bottom floor of a construction, climb three flights of stairs, put down another one, climb down two more flights of stairs, put down another one, then start from the beginning to actually build them. Your melee specialists flagrantly ignore the 'hold ground' command to loop around your entire base to attack the enemy from behind.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is no more ready today for full release than it was a year or more ago. Many of things simply don't work or they're poorly designed. But literally every complaint I can level at the game pales in comparison to the biggest and most game-breaking issue of all: Pathing. Pathing, meaning how the people in your colony moves about. It's completely broken and has been since day one. Has it gotten better over time? Maybe, but it really doesn't matter as its still absolutely horrendus and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game was great until last update when some dev thought it would be great to allow the AI to use hand weapons to destroy stone walls, nullifying the entire premise of the game which is castle building and sieges. You can't have a siege when the AI just, you know, uses his sword to destroy that stone wall that should dull or break said sword, and then come into your city anyways and does it quicker than it took to put up the wall. I would bypass this game for now. It was a wonderful game before…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game. I really do. It has some excellent bones. The castle building is amazing. Most of the management elements are there. But there is one major breaking issue for me, and a host of smaller issues that probably shouldn't have made it to the 1.0 release. First and firsmost in the settler AI. It is bad. Settlers will ignore priority 1 tasks that have available resources to run off and do priority 5 tasks instead. Settlers in an 'Anything' schedule will ignore their needs and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Welcome to Going Medieval. Here are 20 different keybinds we expect you to learn and remember immediately, before you get to actually play. There will be no further prompts or reminders about this. Yeah, my crap memory thanking the devs for that. Great game otherwise.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is very fun, the building, survival and medieval city building are very enjoyable but the reason this review is negative is that the combat is dreadfully bad, completely terrible. Building: 10/10 Survival: 10/10 Colony Management: 10/10 Combat: 0/10 also the gate system is -100/10 It makes no sense, make a beautiful awesome castle? oh yeah somehow your archer won't shoot at enemies in range and in line of sight, they just won't. My melee defenders will run down the attacker's ladders…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I own the game for a while and I played it way too much to not write a review - I was actually surprised that I played more of this game then other super rated ones, so here we go ... The game is obviously the 3D version of Rimworld with the medieval twist (for those who know Rimworld, I didn't when I started to play this one; this game made me buy the Rimworld just to have more fun). That being said, I can safely state that this is one of those games that you won't like if you don't spend…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I kind of feel like I'm being reductive here but I really cant find a good reason to play this over Rimworld or Dwarf Fortress. I know you are supposed to review a game on its own merit and all but it's competition is way too prolific to pretend It just doesn't exist.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game feels great, the graphics are amazing, and there are many, many fleshed out mechanics that I love. Combat is overall not bad, but can get a little cheesy imo. The one big thing missing from a game like this that needs to exist is one thing: FAMILIES There should be romances between characters, role giving to colonists like nobility, last names that carry down genes, and child-bearing gameplay such as childcare, teaching (schools and teachers?), and choosing passions as they grow up…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have many hours in this game, and have gotten my money's worth, that is why I am giving it a positive review. I had much higher hopes for this game. The game often feels slow, and there are only a handful of different types of events. I believe my expectations were too high. This game met its goals, and is worth the cost, although is not genre defining by any means. It also falls into the same trap that many colony sims / city buiilders do, and that is there is no end goal. I am building a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game for those "who like this sort of game" - so I also recommend playing the demo to check it out for yourself. For me, the strengths and charms are enough to make for engaging, fun gameplay in spite of sometimes-frustrating weaknesses. I enjoy the logistics and management challenge of coordinating multiple interconnected mechanisms to seek a successful path. (Success is less a particular goal and more a sandbox goal of "This is going well".) Some folks seem more focused on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a great game. Really fun if you like building castles and doing base defense. Only thing I wish was in the game is the ability for the settlers to marry and have children. It's a very obvious bit of the game that is missing to make it worth playing past the midgame.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do i recommend this game? Yes Do i also recommend it for the great gameplay? No As the game really is great, If i wanted to play lego's i would just download a free lego builder where the only thing that would be missing is trades, raids and invasions but have all other aspects. This game has more missed opportunities than i could list in here, if the developers are relying on workshop item creators, then i honestly would go for a refund. Several bugs out there, quite annoying to be honest.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Once you reach midgame you notice there is no endgame. Its really nice, took me 30 hours for all achievements over some runs. Meanwhile on the Rim im nearing 1000 hours. So im totally down to wasting all my free time to those type of games. Its fun, it has charm but the content is as shallow as a puddle. Sad but kinda understandable 3D "Rimworld" comes way faster to its limits than 2D. It is what it is. I still liked it alot. For a good sale price grab yourself a copy and have a few nice days…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: Going Medieval is one of the rare Early Access games that never really felt like Early Access. It launched with a surprising amount of content, stable systems, and a clear design vision. Over time, the developers delivered meaningful updates that expanded the game’s depth while keeping it polished and cohesive. Most colony simulators grow slowly during Early Access, but Going Medieval felt like a complete experience from the start. When I bought it in Early Access, I expected…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is incomplete even with mods to try to bridge the gap its still garbage, cant have children and can only get new people through rng. Immersion breaking.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Watched Sequisha playing this on twitch and looked fun, tried it myself and it's a great game! positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, its chill and the art-style is nice. I've played it back in the day when it was in early access and invested around 80 hours, enjoyed the solid base and now I get the nice surprise that it is fully released. What anyone should care about: - Enjoy settlement builders and settler management? play it. - Did you enjoy Rim World? play it, and if you also love medieval themes: MUST PLAY. - if you like small details, micro managing settlers and checking what each person…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun building little towns and castles, and the core gameplay is fine, but its definitely not polished enough to be considered a 1.0 release. Lots of buggy glitchy movement, people working through walls and floors, etc.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you love Rimworld but prefer a medieval setting to a sci-fi one, this definitely scratches the itch.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing this game ever since it released in June 2021 and checked in on it periodically ever since. The base game had loads of potential and enjoyability even at its crude earliest release form. Over the past 4,5 years the devs have relentlessly worked on adding important new content to give the game actual progression, an economy and now it finally gained grand objectives, allowing players to formally "finish" a game of Going Medieval. There is still work to do, but I am confident in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An overall good game, With great features and acts like rimworld but in 3D. The biggest issue with this game is not the game its self but the Community Discord Server, The Moderators and Community Helpers in the discord are all friends and will target and go after anyone they dislike. neutral · AI labelView post →The only thing I dislike about the game is the combat. And its a shame as i dislike it so much that I'm giving this a negative review. Its just seems lazily implemented. Not to say that lots of time and effort didn't go into it, i mean in more of an algorithmic way. I would like it if walls and and a proper gate would keep enemies at bay, but this game takes a more Rimworld approach. Enemies easily bust through defenses, so the gameplay is more about kiting and trapping which feels way too…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On a scale of Dwarf Fortress to Rimworld, this game is a solid entry in the genre. However, it's relatively shallow in comparison to the other two. It has great bones for a 3D Dwarf-Fortress-like game just a limited number of -things-. Overall very enjoyable even in it's current state.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tell me why every settler needs 10 construction to build the basic of needs and a simple meal needs 24 of any raw ingredient. It's a simple meal not a three meal course.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a good game if they keep updating it, right now to me if still feels like it needs some work (this is previous to 1.0 release). However the developers have been continuing to update so I feel like with time this game will get even better and has the potential to be a top tier game. A personal gripe of mine is the lack of reproduction amongst villagers (we don't need to see villagers having sex to get kids). I do like the freedom this game provides and look forward to seeing what comes…

This is the game for you. In all honesty for the number of times this game has irritated me, it pales in comparison to the hours i have enjoyed creating different villages and towns. Creating greenhouses and surviving both winters and raids has occupied…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awful. There is an evident lack of thought or care throughout. Combat is still clunky and feels broken. With any and all "castle defence" concepts, the core theme of this title, like choke points and narrow corridors to limit and control attacks rendered irrelevant by the "infinite number of enemies per square" and "poleaxes need 0 space". Which renders "put things in the way and pepper them with missiles" irrelevant since nothing "gets in the way". So players are forced to "cheese"…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically 3D medieval RimWorld. Building multi-story mountain fortresses and underground cellars is super satisfying, and managing winter survival alongside bandit raids keeps it engaging. Colonists still make dumb pathfinding choices occasionally, but the core building and survival loop is ridiculously addictive. 8/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only thing Rimworld was missing to do a proper medieval setting is verticality and that's exactly what this is. Great game if you love colony sims!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Similar to rimworld but medieval themed and adds vertical levels and 3D design for a really nice and enjoyable experience. Highly recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just another early access game that released version 1.0, except it's still an unpolished and buggy beta. Really disappointing because i was looking forward to coming back to the game when it was in a finished state. it's not. Rimworld it is then, i guess.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →no food for winter , get raid by bandit then eat that bandit , problem solve the game use more power draw on GPU than BF6 with high-ultra setting but it is worth the money to buy this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wild not to have a form of population growth in a game like this, if i knew this when considering buying the game, i wouldn't have done it. i know its my own fault for not researching enough, but how can u not have it?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Surprisingly Great! Amazing depth, better than Stronghold. Scaling down instead of up is interesting choice by the developers. After some time playing. I must say it really works.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice game, very adictive, but in late game it feels boring because many events stop happening and no more people come to your village. Maybe there is a limit in number of population and that feels very dissapointing. I also feel that some resorces like stone or iron should respawn in a period of time because there are very little of them. The game feels nice and entertaining at the start but very boring and dissapointing in late game :(
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →God Tier Colony Sim. Dont be scared for this game as it can look quite complex at first, but the game can and will explain itself really well, but leaving just enough room for the player to experiment Give it a try, once pirated this game and out of PURE respect to the devs bought it afterwards
