There’s a shot where he’s dead on the ground and blood is streaming into his palms (very obvious visual metaphor) and an old woman in the audience gasped and yelled “it’s Jesus!”

It was this last film, released in 2008, that was screened to open the evening. neutral · AI labelView post →I don’t know if it’s the best, but “Gran Torino” is a good movie that conveys a conservative pro-immigration message very well.
positive · AI labelView post →I mostly think “you could never make x today” is the lowest form of conversation but you probably couldn’t make Gran Torino, a movie about Clint Eastwood being mad too many Hmong people live in his neighborhood but in a cool way
neutral · AI labelView post →You could make a movie like “Gran Torino” that’s really right-wing (and well-made) but it would get Clint Eastwood death threats these days because it dares to portray an Asian immigrant family in a positive light.

positive · AI labelView post →Gran Torino is a *weird* film. (I also think that there's some antecedents here in the Dirty Harry films)
neutral · AI labelView post →I’m also confused why “Romani” is the theoretical example here, like how Clint Eastwood had his racist character in Gran Torino up against the Hmong so the movie wouldn’t be called racist by as many people
neutral · AI labelView post →There's some that have done extra to get the best out of young performers. Examples would be: Room (2015) with the director making things into a game (like 'who can scream the loudest?'); and Close (2022) where the director worked with the kids for ages before even introducing a camera. A counter-example would be Gran Torino (2008), where the young actors aren't particularly good ('cos Eastwood is more of a "you get two takes, and if you haven't got in 2, you haven't got it" kinda guy)

neutral · AI labelView post →This brings to mind the Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino when he says there's always someone badder than you out there. Terribly paraphrased but you get the idea don't you Elon 😂😂😂
neutral · AI labelView post →Several films on my list have already been mentioned, so here's two that have been overlooked: * Falling Down * Gran Torino
neutral · AI labelView post →Clearly a paid outside agitator. Clint Eastwood made a whole ass movie about how the midwestern Hmong are cool. He gave his Hmong friend the Gran Torino and everything
positive · AI labelView post →I cite “Gran Torino” as a very good conservative film a lot, but because MAGA is a personality cult built around a racist buffoon, Matt Walsh would incite death threats aimed at Eastwood for daring to portray an Asian immigrant family in a positive way.
positive · AI labelView post →Look at even 2008’s Gran Torino by Eastwood. A movie that would probably have appealed to any Bush and John McCain. Do you think a conservative in 2025 America is gonna make a movie that says “hey shit I was kind of racist my whole life anyway here’s my car now that I’m dead, Asian friend”
neutral · AI labelView post →But Gran Torino is a good movie. Trouble with the Curve is where he started making garbage.
positive · AI labelView post →GRAN TORINO is a film about a man who lets go of his bigotry and chooses to support and defend a community of marginalized immigrants by sacrificing himself (and deliberately not using a gun in the process). I don't quite see how that matches up with the current GOP playbook.
positive · AI labelView post →That was a pretty good movie! Gave me kinda Gran Torino vibes with the character arcs and stuff. Was a little less cringy testosterone-, fueled than Armageddon and I appreciate that, and I now understand why FOX cameras all suck - they're trying to get the Days of Thunder closeup angles all the time

neutral · AI labelView post →What guys like Walsh and Shapiro want is every movie and TV show to be Yellowstone, Top Gun, Master and Commander, Jack Ryan and Gran Torino, except with fewer strong supporting characters who are women/POC. That is their "vision." And the organizers of the "fair" should have just gone MAGA C&W.

neutral · AI labelView post →Gran Torino was made fundamentally a small-c conservative movie, but its immigration politics have aged interestingly in light of where the GOP has gone lol
neutral · AI labelView post →Somehow he managed to make a right-wing movie that was PRO-IMMIGRANT in “Gran Torino”. I assume JD Vance started crying and sucking his thumb when he saw it.
positive · AI labelView post →There is a literal scene in the racist Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino where he says it to some young black men and everyone looks at him all confused. That racist ass movie knew it was so archaic they play it for laughs.

negative · AI labelView post →Juror #2 led me to a re-watch of Gran Torino, a remarkable film marred by a few truly terrible line deliveries. I felt like I watched one actor improve in real time. It's incredible how great the movie is despite this!

positive · AI labelView post →Gran Torino. Old racist befriends some Hmong family and gets his gun out. Amazing movie. The Mule was also good!
positive · AI labelView post →That'd be a great essay to read, please do when you can. A standout film of his for me was 'Gran Torino.' It still haunts me as a story about intersections between our reverence of American "war heroes" & their inner traumas, as well as fears of cultural diversity vs. our shared humanity.

neutral · AI labelView post →GRAN TORINO - (2008) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Last night's #Movie Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood with a fine Hmong American supporting cast (a 1st for an American film) incl. Bee Vang & Ahney Her. There is much to confront in this film, and its themes certainly unpalatable at times, but remains a great film.
positive · AI labelView post →101. Gran Torino The absolute zenith of boomer slop, at times so on-the-nose I genuinely couldn't tell if I was watching a parody or not. Either way, this film gave me absolutely nothing, which is almost worse than any of the absurd slurs flying past Clint's mouth. Those are bad too though. 1.3/10

positive · AI labelView post →Now Watching Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood. Yes, I enjoy the film.
positive · AI labelView post →This is your problem. To paraphrase Clint in the movie Gran Torino. "There's some people you don't fuck with. I'm one of those people". "The Federalist Papers" (a MAGA group) has just dissed the Queen, Dolly Parton. This is not only stupid but is the end of Donald Trump and MAGA. Not a good idea.
neutral · AI labelView post →Gran Torino was quite the journey. Makes me feel like there’s some racial empathy there (if I’m remembering the film correctly)
positive · AI labelView post →Re-watched Gran Torino last night for the first time in a long time. I had forgotten how funny this movie is. The tonal changes are pretty perfect and Eastwood's cantankerous, tell it how he sees it, racist old man is a mood to aspire to. (Minus the racism.) One of the best Eastwood films. #filmsky
