Did a quick, scribbly "Little" warm-up for today: King Little from Fleischer's "Gulliver's Travels". Was studying some of the better-animated scenes in it last night, and while the movie on the whole is a mixed bag, it has it's charming moments.

Saw "Megalopolis" tonight (no spoilers):. Megalopolis seems to be one of those "love it or hate it" films. Sitting at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes right now: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/megalopolis So of course I had to see it to make up my own mind about it. It is a brilliant, beautiful film, that likely nobody will "get" for 10 years or so, and by the time they do get it, all the societal and political references will be so dated, it will need footnotes, much in the same way that…

Starting our day off with CASTLE IN THE SKY, in honor of birthday boy Hayao Miyazaki. Called LAPUTA in Japan (after the floating island in GULLIVER'S TRAVELS), this was the first movie officially released by Studio Ghibli (yes, NAUSICAA technically predates Studio Ghibli).

This was the second & final feature-length film from Fleischer Studios (following Gulliver's Travels in 1939). It was Paramount's last animated feature film until Charlotte's Web (made by Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1973).

The most fun I had reading in my school days was reading Gulliver's Travels in my senior year, for an assignment where we had to compare a book *we chose* to its film adaptation (in my case, the 1996 miniseries). Just having a choice of what to read makes a world of difference.

Castle in the Sky (1986) Profanity The word "Laputa" is taken from Gulliver's Travels, based on the Spanish phrase meaning "the whore". However, the implication is unintentional, as director Hayao Miyazaki had no idea about the true meaning of the word "Laputa" before putting it in the film.
