Players praise Hades for its addictive gameplay loop and meaningful progression. [1][2][3] Many note that death feels like an opportunity rather than a punishment. [1][4][5] Some reviewers find the game repetitive and the combat monotonous. [6][7][8]

I want to like this game, but it feels too repetitive and one-note for me. Yes, there are a variety of weapons and boons, which alter your attack and defense mechanics, to unlock and explore. However, regardless of what you're using, the gameplay loop is simple -- Attack, dodge the ridiculous amounts of crap the game throws at you, attack, dodge, attack, dodge, dodge, dodge. No matter how many upgrades you collect, …

Hades is one of those games where losing doesn't feel like losing. Every run unlocks something new, every build feels different and before you know it you've been playing for hours. The combat is smooth, the soundtrack is fantastic and the characters are some of the best I've seen in a roguelike. Absolutely loved it.

I initially bounced off this game quite hard. I went in with the typical roguelike mindset of "I need to beat this run I am in right now," which meant that every time I failed, the story interruptions and the hub area felt like annoying hurdles keeping me from my next attempt. However, once I stopped trying to force a win and started embracing the grind, it clicked. The metaprogression and the narrative aren't …

I went into Hades expecting a fun roguelike, but ended up getting addicted to “just one more run” for hours. The combat feels insanely smooth, every weapon has its own personality, and the progression never feels wasted even when you fail. What surprised me most was the story. Somehow this game makes dying over and over actually meaningful because the characters react to everything. Zagreus, the dialogue, the …

Hades never felt like repeating the same thing, it felt like slowly understanding it. Runs blur together, but progress doesn’t. You learn the systems, the characters learn you back, and suddenly dying feels…normal. Fast, elegant combat. Sharp writing. A soundtrack that never misses. One of the few games where reaching 100% felt natural instead of forced. Still dying. Still worth it.

IGN praised the characters, writing that they each "[felt] like an authentic reinterpretation of a classic Greek myth...they're all a joy to behold." The Guardian liked art director Jen Zee's work on the game, particularly her portraits of the characters, calling them "wonderfully drawn" and "with appropriate godlike profiles." Jordan Devore of Destructoid enjoyed the story, feeling the dialogue made use of its…

positive · AI labelView post →This is one of the rare games I struggled to write a review for. I was so close to giving it a negative review, but then I thought that would be unfair to the developers, so I changed it to positive. The biggest reason for this is that I have stayed away from the roguelike genre for years, and I forced myself several times to try it and see whether I could actually enjoy it or not. I was always prejudiced against the genre because I hate soulslike games, and because of that, I thought the…

positive · AI labelView post →This is probably one of the best action roguelike games. Lots of different weapons + lots of different blessings + heat levels = very high replay values. The art style is very supergiant signature, reminds me of Bastion and Transistor. Story line is very long. I’ve completed almost 100 successful runs but haven’t exhausted the dialogues. The game could be a bit difficult at first. After several attempts you will get better and more powerful combinations will be revealed. Achievements…

positive · AI labelView post →Rogue-likes aren't generally my thing. But this one looked interesting, and I loved the stylized designs (and, ya know, all those positive reviews). Bought it. Played it. And promptly dumped it. "Dude, what is this? No meaningful progression. Same boss over and over again. Ain't got time for that!" So, I laid this game to rest. Or so I thought. 5 years later, Hades 2 comes out, and I've just finished Silksong and a few other titles I absolutely loved. "Wait.. I have the first Hades. Hmm..."…

Hades has been a thrilling experience that has drawn me in to play for hours. The gameplay and combat are different from what I am used to in other games, and I was at first annoyed by having to restart everything I die, but eventually found myself loving the progression system. Being able to grow stronger and more powerful with every escape attempt feels so natural…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not a roguelike/lite fan, Dead Cells, Binding of Isaac, Windsblown, etc... never stuck with me. That is until I have played this game. It certainly lived up to the hype, even captivating a non-fan like me. I got my first successful escape attempt at the 14th run. After numerous close calls with , with me over-exerting, dying when the boss's health only having a sliver of it left, I finally had my first successful run. Now usually with other roguelike games, I put down the games after one…
