Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 193 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (731 of 1,020 positive).
Many complain about frustratingly low hit chances and excessive misses. [1][2][3] Some find the game very challenging and unforgiving. [4][5][6]

Some good: - Story is acceptable - Dialogue is palatable - Characters are enjoyable - The art style and atmosphere are great - The music is probably my favourite part of the game... really cool soundtrack! The killer thing here is the absolute grind that comes as you progress. Most of your shots are going to miss; even when you have 50-80% chance to hit, you're probably only hitting 15-25% of them. In brief: simple, solid, linear turn-based tactics with nice retro aesthetics. Set on a colony ship which suffers a mysterious disaster en route to its destination, Halfway presents a sci-fi horror story through a series of small-scale skirmishes. The player takes on the character of Morten, a grizzled security guard who awakes from suspended animation to find the ship apparently adrift in space, crew almost …

As one of the fewer than 10% of players who have completed the main story AND stop the invasion, I feel I have the authority to present myself as an ambassador to this game and say that it was really hard.... like REALLY hard.... like an exasperating curve of exponential difficulty that's only palatable to a connoisseur of tactical turn-based gameplay and who revels in the glory of turning unwinnable situations into …

I'm giving this a thumbs up but I didn't finish this game and I don't know that I'd care to play it again. It is a turn-based tactical shooter which is really neat. I like the simplicity of the game and the narrative is engaging. Managing your squad is not burdensome and you can get into the game quickly. However, the big negative for me is that it is unforgiving. There are wave after wave of enemies coming at you …
Summarised from 34 of the 216 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 13, 2026. How summaries are made
58% of the 193 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Halfway. The complaint that keeps coming up: frustratingly low hit chance and frequent misses. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Halfway received mixed reviews on Metacritic. Rock Paper Shotgun said it "has some considerable charm", and they enjoyed the mood and attention to detail. However, they criticized what they felt was the game's tendency to make tactical decisions impossible through not providing enough information, unfair battles, and bugs. GameSpot praised the game's visuals, music, and mood, but they felt that the lack of permadeath harmed the atmosphere that these elements set up. They also felt the pacing made some parts of the game feel like a slog. PC Gamer called it a "relatively tough but mechanically lean sci-fi strategy game".

neutral · AI labelView post →Nice pixel graphics Nice concept But nope On average, you will have a 33% chance to hit whatever you are aiming at. This is just boring and not fun. Sure, you can spend your 2nd action point and bump that up to 55% hit chance. Still not good enough. Miss miss miss miss miss. Even enemies miss you just as often. Combat it just rounds and rounds of missing and wasting ammo. Cover seems busted too. Being behind cover shouldnt make enemies NOT behind cover harder to hit, but in this game it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Halfway is an appropriate title for this game....because I made it about halfway through the story before I lost interest and stopped playing. The story is a passable derivative of the movie 'Pandorum' but with enough tweaks to better suit a videogame format and to avoid copyright infringement. The characters you assemble are largely forgettable archetypes (e.g. grizzled soldier, mad scientist, etc) and the dialogue they share is bland. I spent a lot of time just blasting through unread text…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was the game that made me realise that Steam's binary yes/no isn't really great, something in the middle is needed. I completed the game and had fun, but overall I just don't think I can recommend it. The systems are a little frustrating. Hit chance is insanely low, weapon range for all except sniper rifles is really low. There was one point where I was being sniped from the other side of the map by an enemy, that I couldn't even see. It's just a little frustrating. But, I did enjoy it and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Are you a fan of the word "miss"? If you are, then you'll love this game. A typical fight goes like this: You're surrounded by enemies, there's at least four of them and they're slowly encroaching on your position. You take the time to carefully arrange your team so that they're all in cover, watching choke points, ready to fight, They come into range and take a couple of shots at your team and you take damage, but that's fine because now it's your turn! Miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. Four…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gave it a fair chance but the core shooting mechanics are a chore to play. if I wanted to describe Halfway with one word it would be *MISS*. All your characters have an extremely high rate of missing every shot they take. In a game where you are limited with the items you can take into each battle, you will run out of bullets and will have to rely on melee combat to finish the fight. The setting and graphics are the highlight of the game. There was also an interesting storyline being built, but…

neutral · AI labelView post →A really great mix of genres that could have been a fun experience. Unfortunately it's not fun because you're constantly the subject of cheap irritations that artificially inflate the difficulty. Playing this game you have to assume that the game's rules only apply to you and not your enemies. They can spawn in and immediately get a full round of attacks. Fog of war works one way so they always know where you are. The game can can tell what angle of fire each space gives them before they…

Otherwise just skip it and play something else in order to keep your sanity (especially because it has no save). neutral · AI labelView post →Halfway is a tactical squad turn-based game with no RPG elements. I do not know why this game is tagged with RPG, but you do not manage any stats or any character role throughout the game. The closest quality comparison is X-COM. Quality is unfortunately not present with this title. You are woken up on some kind of ship capable of FTL, abandoned with some episodic dimensional failures. Think Event Horizon without the actual horror. From the beginning, the game progression is a linear path with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are very pretty to me. It was what caught my attention to the game. I like that pixel art and third-person view, top-down style that Halfway has. I also liked the gameplay too, quite fun to me. A nice mix of exploration with turn based strategy combat. The story is simple, funny at times, but quite intriguing and sober most of the time. Some weird localization, or translation, stuff. But that is not a problem. With that being said, Halfway has a fatal flaw, that makes the game…

My character is literally standing 2 squares in front of the enemy 凸(>皿<)凸 Full Review I have 34 hours in this game, played it 2 times, and it is one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. Gameplay (1/10): Everything is randomized. Random hit chance, random critical hit, random weapon stats (yes weapons with the same name, stored in the same chest can have +/- 3 damage when you reload the same level). The developers even take pride in…

positive · AI labelView post →It wasn't great in 2014 and it hasn't gotten better with age. Much like Starbound, there's not much meat to the game - you're fighting the same three fights over and over and over again barely strung together with a few sentences of dialogue between each mission. Add in terrible accuracy curves, clunky inventory management, and no experience gain - then you really have no reward for grinding through the story to reveal the next story segment. If the story was good, I would recommend the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really only one glaring flaw. The game is not fun. It's a solid work overall, but just boring to play. There's very little in the way to strategy to employ, it's mostly just an RNG slog of trading potshots to clear out enemies, and there's basically no combat options beyond move and shoot, shoot and move, or shoot better. There's a handful of grenades and a character with a shield removal debuff, but other than that... nada. I just couldn't finish it after weeks of picking it up just to put it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun at first, but about halfway through the enemies just get too damage-spongey. No matter how many optional missions you do, even finding a few secrets along the way, your weapons just get outclassed by enemy armor. You're gonna be sitting there, turn after interminable turn, chipping away at your enemy 3-6 hp at a time. And every 5 turns or so their shields automatically recharge-- this isn't unfair, because your shields do as well, I'm just tired of sitting there doing the same move over…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay rated an 'ok', there's a lot of odd small choices that I think would have been annoying late game had I ever reached it. I'm spending a lot writing on the mechanics because I ran into gamebreaking bugs that made me give up on the game. I finished a really hard mission on to discover the game had eaten my progress of like 8 missions and I suddenly had to replay several missions to get back to where I was. weirdly I still had all the gear I'd collected. Started to get back to where I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having a 70% + chance for any hit actually means 10% so be prepared to miss every single shot u take. Playing through this game sadly is pure misery which is sad, because i like the setting, the art and the idea of the gameplay in general. Every level in late game makes me want to rip my hair out, u try every level a thousand times, because its insane RNG completely in the favor of the AI. Im not joking when i say i just missed 6 80% shots in a row. I was thinking about writing this while…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: 1. Engaging turn-based combat with ranged attacks and cover tactics. 2. Tense atmosphere in exploring the spaceship for realistic tactics. 3. Unclear explanations for key mechanics. 2. Inconsistent user interface causing frustration. 3. Uninspiring character dialogue and narrative. 4. Unexplained boss fight and plot gaps.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly didn't play much of this because it was more annoying that anything. The tactical gameplay itself seems fine but I felt like I was fighting against the interface for most of the 20 minutes I spent on this and I have no desire to try pushing further.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is terrible. At first it feels charming but as you progress you realize what awful game design is going on here. Hits are RNG, which is always a problem in games. The RNG appears to be broken as well because you will have an 85 percent chance of hitting right next to an enemy and... MISS MISS MISS then the AI just runs up and starts punching you because you can't hit anything with your guns and smacks you for half the characters health while your characters only do about 2-5 damage…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →so frustrated with the Hit Chance
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The plot is alright, though unfortunately the gameplay quickly starts to feel like a slog with wave upon wave of the same enemies.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →story seems interesting. but I'm not satisfied by the gameplay. the guns/accuracy are on a leveling system it seems which means using the guns in the beginning SUUUCKS and you can't hit anything even when you're 1 square away from melee range. maybe I'm missing something, but I can't recommend playing it. if you're interested find a no commentary playthrough I guess.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Halfway through the first, the score is 8-1, Dream you've read that right. I know there's a lot of game left, but the same theme has remained: The Dream seem to just to be able to find some offense when shots aren't falling. The Valkyries continue to struggle on that front.

neutral · AI labelView post →Halfway through the game I've been finding that the game teeters a bit too much towards frustrating with how stingy it is with ammo drops If you give me a literal RE4 cabin level you can't have me run out of ammo and melee by the 3rd round of baddies

positive · AI labelView post →If you told me they didn't playtest this at all I would believe you
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I only played through about 5 missions, but the game is dull. Point blank shot only has 68% hit rate lmao, sniper does not seem to work: always has 33% hit rate regardless of distance to target, better equip another shotgun on your sniper and get him close enough to get that 68% hit rate.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has charm and atmosphere, but the tedious combat, monotonous levels, negligible strategy required, and lack of a meaningful sense of progression made Halfway a DNF for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. Miss.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The mythic and platinums should be easy. Going to finish the TellTale Game of Thrones on Xbox since my original save from 2016 is still on the cloud. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun but when you lose you have to start the whole level again which means you just wasted 20 minutes. Also, the story gets mighty boring and it has resolution problems designed to be played on smaller screens.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're not willing to be ruthlessly efficient in your tactics, even to the point of engaging in some very boring strategies when both you and your enemy have a secure position and don't want to make a move (or can't, if your opponents are immobile), this game might be difficult to enjoy. I've seen numerous claims that the statistics in this game are inaccurately-represented, though to the best of my ability, everything seems completely legitimate. The tactical situations presented will allow…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah no. Not for me. I was hoping for a game that was something like XCom, or maybe Shadowrun Returns -style combat. This has some of the gameplay with some pretty frustrating design choices that made it far less fun. Like ammo. I ran out of ammo pretty quickly and realized that inventory restrictions meant ammo scarcity was going to be a thing throughout this game. There's enough frustrations in the gameplay to add ammo conservation on top of it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Based on all the complaints I thought I would be having seizure like tantrums over the RNG/accuracy. I'm either exceptionally lucky, or empty on the inside, because I only think the game is neat.
