Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era
Developer Unfrozen
Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is a turn-based strategy game developed by Unfrozen and published by Hooded Horse and Ubisoft for Windows. An installment in the Heroes of Might and Magic series, it contains mechanics, role-playing elements and features not widely presented in the series; in addition to a single-player mode, the game supports multiplayer, co-op, and a map editor. What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 293 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (20,223 of 23,347 positive).
Many players praise the game for capturing the nostalgic feel of Heroes III while adding fresh ideas. [1][2][3] Several reviewers criticize the AI for being unbalanced and overly difficult, especially in single-player. [4][5][6] Some players express frustration that development focuses too much on PvP rather than PvE content. [7][8][9]

This game is a great successor to Heroes 3, and I've really enjoyed my time with it. HOWEVER I have to give it a thumbs down due to what I perceive to be completely out-of-whack development priorities. In the months since launch, the patches have been almost entirely focused on competitive PvP. Constant back-and-forth balancing passes, tweaking percentages and default skill loadouts each time. "Nostalgia is one hell of a drug" - Sseth I grew up with Heroes 3, and have been playing it for most of my life. I understand the nostalgic part very well. Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is actually good. The art direction, atmosphere, nostalgia bait — all solid. But the AI balancing is completely insane right now. I started a CUSTOM GAME on the EASIEST difficulty. End of WEEK ONE: AI shows up with THREE different Tier 7 creatures and an army literally 3x larger than mine. What am I supposed to do exactly? Negotiate with them? This doesn’t feel like “challenging …

I’ve been chasing the Heroes III feeling for more than 20 years, and honestly, Olden Era gets way closer than I ever expected. It has that “one more turn” magic, the kind that makes you look at the clock, realize it’s 2 a.m., and somehow feel like it was worth it. This game feels like it was made by people who actually love Heroes, not just people trying to imitate it. The map exploration, town building, army …

There are numerous schools of thought on what a new Heroes of Might and Magic game should be. Everyone has their own favorite entry in the franchise and hopes this will be an extension of that specific golden age. In fact, it has become a trend to shamelessly taxidermy the beloved corpses of old games and parade them around in exchange for a big sack with a dollar sign on it. Thankfully, that is not the case here. …

Players who liked Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era talk about great blend of nostalgia and innovation; those who didn't talk about aI is unbalanced and cheats with huge armies. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game has been widely accepted as a good continuation of the series with "deep and complex gameplay", offering a lot of freedom in gameplay. Other reviewers note that it contains an "overwhelming sense of nostalgia", a familiar experience and "everything that could have been asked from a new game in the series". Olden Era is considered one of the most anticipated games of its year, and was described by some journalists as a "new era for strategy". The game has collected more than 15,000 concurrent players in less than 20 minutes after the release of the early access, reaching the peak online at around 50,000 players, and having more than 1.5 million wishlists on Steam. Olden Era sold…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Neutral rating as of the time of writing this review. The game has a lot of potential but if the developers do not correct-course, this game will be dead in the water if it’s only going to cater to competitive HOMM 3 players. I’ve seen a lot of reviews praising this game as a “return to form” - I wonder if these reviewers are either bots or living on CopeMaster 9000’s. This game is not a “return to form”, because it’s very apparent that this game was made for competitive multiplayer…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's probably a nice competitive game, but the AI ruins the single player for me (and a few others it seems). You can probalby read what is nice about the game in other reivews. This is all on HARD difficulty, as normal is way too easy if you have played any of the heroes games in your life. Why I don't recommend the game for playing against the computer. As others mentioned, the AI will be at your door with a ridicolus army. After 3 weeks, he is usually at your door with 10-20 Tier 7 units…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We live in difficult and dangerous times. There are many wars, peoples want to kill each other for money and power. There is youth who commit suicide, there is social media with much fake information. We enter an area of AI we cannot handle as stupid humans and we can fly around the moon or further. I am 46 years now. I live in a peaceful country named Holland. When I was 18, I bought my first PC in an electronic shop. Games were delivered by CD-ROMs. When I bought my PC, the shopkeeper let me…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the gameplay. But I am an old man, and I currently have issues reading all of the text in the game, it's too straining on my eyes as the size is just too small. I would also like to see a scalable interface that I can enlarge for readability purposes. Until that is added, I unfortunately have to park the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As of the time of this review, this game does not offer proper PvE-content (nor true co-op vs AI). AI is too stupid to use the game's mechanics, so it simply resorts to cheating via summoning death stacks out of thin air before it throws its only attempt at a flimsy rush at you, then it stops doing anything, lays down, and waits for you to step on it. Devs promised to implement functional PvE by the end of Q3 2026. Here's to hoping. It looks beautiful, it sounds good, and PvP is probably fun…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game for the PvE and to play hotseat co‑op with friends, but co‑op still isn’t available almost 4 month later. Now that the players are showing their dissatisfaction about their focus on pvp the developers are telling us that they’re not focused on PvP at all and that PvE is more important. We’re not blind we can read the patch notes, and it’s obvious that PvE is nowhere near their priority. For now, I don’t recommend this game, because if you’re coming to play co‑op with your…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's Heroes of Might and Magic 3 polished, upgraded, faster, better, stronger. But it needs more time to stew. This game also has a few major issues, hence the negative review. The game shows signs of greatness, and I will change my review to positive should the devs tackle the major issues. So the problems are: 1) The AI sucks. Right now it's given massive starting bonii but it can't really manage the overworld or combat part of the game. In maps where you start with two cities, the AI won't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is great but yes I agree with lots of the other reviewers. I bought the game in hope they would focus on PVE content. I do not care about PVP content at all. I want Story and maybe some custom maps. I thought by now we would have way more PVE content but yeah all these updates so far has been heavy focus on PVP... Game-design and the factions are great ,but they need to switch focus to PVE and campaign not PVP and multiplayer.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great ressurection of old HOMM3 , all in all amazing and refreshing but there's one big downside. There is no real RMG and all the preset templates are made for an obsessed competitive market that wants everything to be perfectly balanced and equal so every template map feels like you're forced to play by a strict ruleset of do only this do only that, by week 2 you need to have x and y otherwise the game is already lost mentality. You can't really actually sit and slowly enjoy a normal…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm old (very old...), and not really an avid 'gamer', but this software has revived an old fondness for turn-based games (Dungeon Master on the Atari; yes, I'm that old...). I never play PvP (too dumb for that...); the Single Player mode has more than enough variety and interest to keep me going for (I hope...) a few more decades yet. Recommended, then, for those who, like me, are not very good at computer games. This one is a Good One.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too much focus on Competitive PVP right now, it feels like Singleplayer was an Afterthought for the Early Access Release. Now, don't get me wrong, this is an EA release and i think they still have time to correct this, and work on both Single player modes and finally adding Co-op to the game. I know they've made Co-op their #1 priority so i won't linger on this topic, but i'm glad they listened. I have some gripes with the campaign mode, that historically always was the best way to…

The devs are very attentive to players' feedback and are ready to change things if fans didn't like smt, so huge respect for that! It doesn't have co-op yet sadly, but they promised it's coming so I hope it won't take too long. I also hope the developers give PvE as much attention as PvP. The UI needs some rework, but the devs…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First off: HoMM veteran speaking The game is taking massive inspiration from HoMM3 and HoMM5 while adding a lot to the formula. It looks great, the game isn't demanding and it just has a lot of strategy to offer. The good: - fantastic tutorial and challenges for new players to learn some features - a good variety of map templates - Duel mode making a great comeback and getting improved over previous iterations - Act 1 of campaign serves as a decent introduction to the world - A lot…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is going to be amazing. I don't regret purchasing and supporting now for what it will be in the future. But for now, the AI is so catastrophically terrible that the game feels unplayable in PvE. It's a mixed experience and really confusing. What seems to be going on is a combination of failures: 1) The AI is absolutely terrible and cannot play the game in a meaningful sense. You can play for hours and have all the AIs more or less suicide and then find the at the end that there was a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Message to the Devs, I have never played a game from you before. I have read the reviews people are leaving on this game. I wholeheartedly agree that PVE needs to be the focus of this game. Co-Op vs Computer is the way you will want to fly in 2026. People are sick of toxicity. They want the sense of accomplishment from beating the most difficult AI opponent with their friend/s. Do this through good AI of the computer player/enemy. Don't just give them a massive amount of resources or…

I can't say for sure that we gave the series much of a chance after Heroes 3, but I can say they weren't what we wanted from the game. Years later, I picked Heroes 3 back up and played it a bit, all the while thinking how nice it would be if game studios actually made games like they used to. Then I saw this, and the name "Olden Era" made me think they they were…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was so excited to play a new Heroes game at first. This was probably one of the 2-3 games I actually got hyped about in the last 5 years. And it is insane how hard they botched it. I know that the game is in early access, but the with current tempo they operate with, it will take 3-4 years to make a proper game from this mess. The game was definitely made with PvP in mind, not caring about PvE at all. It barely has any maps, the templates are mostly boring, the AI is catastrophicly bad...…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is a cheekiness you can feel in the game, as if you can hear the devs saying everything, instead of the voice of the game. It tries to pay homage to roots of the series, but falls short for my tastes. The writing is abysmal and uncreative. I believe one of the heroes is literally named John Smith or something immersion breaking like that. That's the cheekiness I'm talking about. Always some joke the devs inserting to reference something to take you right out of the game. Game interfaces,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd say right now 6/10 with very much potential but give it a year of features, not polishing but features. Does anyone play this game for the PvP? - Game does not have a fulfilling PvE (AI is dumb as a bag of rocks that cheats (no way they got that army form the cities I just claimed from them)) - Co-Op don't exist, playing with a friend in PvP is all fun and games until you step on their territory and it becomes very turn-based and you know what? unplayable for friends just having fun. -…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please adjust the AI growth. Campaign is difficult, almost impossible, to progress this way. Multiple games the AI has grown bigger than reasonable. Overall game plays as smoothly as HoMM3 and stands well on its own.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Review is outdated. I think I'm going to be a little biased here considering 99% of the time I spent in the HoMM series was in the third game, and its fan made expansions. First things first, this game wants you to go play the PvP mode. That part is paaaainfully obvious. PvE 200% difficulty players like me can go s*ck a large one at this point. Onto the gameplay: NO RANDOM MAP? Okay.. early access, fair enough. I picked the map "OctoJebus", which is supposedly the biggest map size with…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is the moment my dreams finally come true — a real HoMM experience! The game captures the soul of the classic series while feeling fresh. I’m absolutely in love with the deep mechanics, the vibrant art style, and the overall logic of the world. The campaign is engaging from the very first minute. It’s everything a fan could hope for!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. Good design. Interesting mix of Heroes 3 and heroes 5. The UI is a bit too big but I think it is great for steam deck.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Foundation is there for a great game, but the AI, campaign and actual gameplay are pointless. Clearly set for PVP not PVE and against the spirit of the HoMM 7 editions before it. Do not recommend if you are hoping for the long and complex campaigns of HoMM in the past.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Early Access edition Elder Millennial ('82) here. HOMM III remains my most-played game of all time. Just finished Act I of the campaign, and I swear I could smell the bag of shrimp chips next to my Pentium, hear the sound of my dad's van pulling into the driveway and know that I didn't get my homework done in time, and feel my eyeballs starting to dry out from just one more turn. This is nostalgia bait at its finest, but more than that, they actually paid attention to the gameplay, the…

Had no chance with the highest difficulty Negatives: - AI is very poor, they either rock up with an army that's 10 times your size by cheating, or sit idle and do nothing (no flagging mines,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really, really wanted to enjoy it, but the verdict after 60 hours in the campaign and the random maps is, unfortunately, a no. The game seems designed with PvP in mind, and that's not my cup of tea. AI is insultingly bad, it just cheats to a ridiculous degree. Don't think it would have flied in the 2020s. Each and every single one of the templates generates a fast map, chocked with resources, that seems optimized for a few in-game weeks of play. The campaign is short, and bad, and…

The core game feels good and introduces a lot of great ideas, but no matter how much I try I just can't get much enjoyment out of the game. The reason for this is simple, the game is not made for me. The game is made for competitive 1v1 PvP If you enjoy the core HoMM gameplay and is primarily interested in competitive play, then I can recommend this game. Unfortunately if you're like me and not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This isn’t “olden era”, it plays like a Heroes of Might and Magic III competitive mod. Maps are designed with almost no mines and an overload of towns and weekly-visit buildings, which drastically changes the pacing and playstyle. It took me too long to realize this wasn’t just a poorly chosen first map but the intended design philosophy, so I missed the refund window. Leaving this here so others don’t make the same mistake.

neutral · AI labelView post →Finally, after years of garbage from Ubisoft almost killing the franchise, Heroes of Might and Magic is back with an actual good game. Olden Era has a lot of potential, but it currently has some significant things holding it back: - The AI is hot garbage and this is the biggest problem facing the game atm. When the AI isn't suiciding towards you with cheat stacks, it struggles to leave its starting area and clear camps even at max difficulty. The devs need to prioritize this as HOMM has…

I quite like the franchise getting a good game under its belt - which this one is but I also see something that has been thoroughly apparent in our times - making things look better, seemingly adding more complexity, but also making sure that everyone can play it. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoy this game, but I wouldn’t recommend it just yet. The developers have put a lot of focus on PvP balance, and the latest update even broke my old save. They keep buffing and nerfing things back and forth. Meanwhile, there’s been almost no new content for PvE players. The AI is still as dumb as it was when Early Access launched. On high difficulty it summons troops out of thin air with a hero that has 30+ abilities and then rushes straight for your city. What I’m hoping for most is more…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There’s a lot to love (and hate) about this game if you’re a fan of the original Heroes of Might and Magic III. I’ve hated all the newer remakes (4 and onward). Every time the developers try to take a modern approach with “nice” 3D art, the game loses its charm. Olden Era has been widely criticized for its graphical style choice, but that unique take on 3D graphics makes it look almost exactly like a 3D version of HoMM3, and I love it. Among all the things I love about this game, its style…
