Hohokum
Developer Honeyslug, Richard Hogg
Hohokum is a 2014 art video game developed by Honeyslug and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita, and by Annapurna Interactive for Microsoft Windows. The player controls a snake-like creature to explore 17 whimsical worlds with no set objectives. The developers, who began development in 2008, compared the concept to flying a kite and were inspired by free… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

[4][5][6] Some players find the game confusing or obtuse, with unclear objectives and occasional bugs that hinder progress. [7][8][9]

The glowing review I wrote still stands but as I have played more I have run into some bugs that mar the experience a bit. Sometimes animations replay several times in a glitched manner which left me sitting there confused wondering what was going on. In one instance, in the hat level, animations did not progress leaving me softlocked and unable to finish the level, exiting and returning erased my progress for that …

A delightfully cheerful game about music and color. It’s simply fun to snake around and figure out how the many unique worlds work. The order in which you can explore each world is pretty open-ended. It’s nice to simply wander around without a ‘level select’ screen in the way as well as being able to move on and keep exploring when you come across one of the game’s trickier puzzles. Since the game is committed to …

Hohokum is a masterclass in wordless discovery, perfectly capturing what it means to be driven by pure curiosity. The story begins with a simple game of hide-and-seek. After your companions scatter, you take on the role of a graceful, godlike creature—part kite, part serpent—drifting through vibrant, miniature worlds to find them. There are no tutorials, no UI, and zero text. No hand-holding? That’s the whole point. …

(Is this game for you?) If you play games for completion or expect significant gameplay depth, then you won't get much out of this. If you want a short and sweet audiovisual experience where you can relax, it's perfect for you! Gameplay: 8/10 May seem aimless at first glance, but this game is all about exploration and discovery, and it's very fun to find everything these worlds have to offer Visuals: 10/10 …

* Strong recommendation - but may be a steep start * Playful puzzling-adventure romp in an enigmatic, colourful world awaiting your explorations. I absolutely LOVED this!! It's a 'cult classic'(?) from the Play Station era, apparently. Fairly recently ported to PC. It's vibrant and childlike (not childish!) and fun and favours exploration and experimentation and an open mind. But may have rather a high threshold for …

neutral · AI labelView post →I'll never forget the excitement of the official PlayStation account tweeting about Hohokum being tempered by nearly every reply being people demanding that their favourite character be added to PlayStation All-Stars, (the Smash Bros game).
neutral · AI labelView post →-- UPDATE -- Ok, so I gave it another go, and I think I mostly get it now. You're a snek and you travel to different places. If you solve whatever puzzle is in a place, you unlock a new snek bud that hangs out in the Home area around its little portal. However, I still don't love it...some of the puzzles are kinda fun, others I never would've figured out in a million bajillion years without a guide. Achievements are even more obtuse than the puzzles. Navigating between different areas was a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this game if you have already done so on console! Even though they added the required for the game to run on PC, it is not worth to buy it, because you are going to be paying for a far worse experience, allow me to explain. I am not sure this is caused by a setting for refresh rate (and it would be really dumb if it was) but some of the worm friends are simply impossible to retreat, on Hector's world you can do everything available on it and the cutscene will not trigger like it does…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hohokum is one of the most confusing games I’ve ever played. Half the time I had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to be doing, where I was supposed to go, or if I was even making progress at all. It feels less like a traditional game and more like being dropped into a giant interactive art project and being told to just figure it out. That said, the visuals are *incredibly* pretty. Every area is colorful, weird, creative, and full of tiny details and strange little animations that made…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not sure I understand it. I'm actually pretty sure I don't. Maybe I'm a slow learner but I just watched a bunch of snakes drift around for a few hours and never got to the elephants and I'm not sure why.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hohokum, developed by Honeyslug and Richard Hogg and published by Annapurna Interactive, is a vibrant and whimsical exploration game that invites players into a world brimming with color, creativity, and playful curiosity. Eschewing traditional goals, challenges, or even a conventional narrative, Hohokum is more of an interactive art piece than a typical game. It’s designed to evoke a sense of wonder and joy, encouraging players to meander through a surreal landscape at their own pace,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is beautiful and perfect. I put a few hours into the Playstation version years ago but am glad to be able to buy it a second time. Playing this with my kiddos while the colors twinkled in their eyes is a memory that no other game has ever been able to give me. As an added bonus, Tycho's 'A Walk' is in my funeral playlist now too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is basically interactive art. You interact with the environment around you to solve puzzles and advance. Nothing is really explicit and it doesn't hold your hand, but experimenting is fun and it's beautiful. Every second of it could be a wallpaper and it's a bit reminiscent of Matisse's works. Another highlight is the soundtrack with songs by artists like Tycho which sets a relaxing and playful mood. I hope for more games like this one

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another example of what a mess Sony’s store is. Hohokum (PS4) makes you choose between two editions, both named “Game”. Why is this choice here? What effects does it have? Who chose those names?

positive · AI labelView post →Intriguing, colorful, cute and unique puzzle game, where you play as a snake. Not too difficult, but challenging at times. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Appleseed's Indie Game Of The Day! Day 341) Hohokum by Honeyslug/Richard Hogg (I missed yesterday oop) Hohokum feels like an interactive art piece - in the best way. It's a beautiful experience in puzzle solving and creativity, with each area featuring new puzzles and gorgeous visuals.
positive · AI labelView post →Cute and stylized series of environmental puzzles that put a lot of trust in player intuition. It kind of feels like some of the best Cool Math Games I played as a kid, just even more polished. It’s really fun to just slither around and explore all the beautiful areas.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first the surreal atmosphere looks awesome, however the game play quickly makes Hohokum very boring. The only things to do are find all the portholes, open all the eyes, complete the optional missions some maps have ( which reset if you leave ), and acquire all the achievements. Eyes can be hidden behind objects, and some are invisible. I've spent way too much time in individual maps going back-and-forth, in a search pattern from one side to the other, attempting to find all the eyes.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a truly original experience, somewhere between a puzzle game, exploration, and an art piece. In the end, it feels closer to an interactive visual experience than a traditional video game. The game is quite obscure when it comes to objectives or direction. This can be confusing at first, and sometimes frustrating when it’s unclear what you’re supposed to do. The gameplay is extremely simple, limited to movement, speeding up, or slowing down. Where the game truly shines is in its visual…

neutral · AI labelView post →I think the game is designed to be open-ended, even though there is a way to "complete" the game. For example, there doesn't exactly seem to be instructions, and you kind of learn how to play the game as you go along. However, the visual design is striking (and, at the same time, peaceful). So, even if you don't make formal progress zooming along in a colorful world with interesting sounds and rumble feedback is a unique experience! In terms of being goal-oriented, I am not sure if I would…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very goofy but fun game for what it is, travelling the multiverse as a weird sperm/kite/worm creature. Fun but chill music plays as you explore many worlds and this soundtrack just adds to the game's atmosphere and unique aesthetic. Nearly every world has it's own unique puzzles/challenges for you to discover and solve, the world's that don't are connecting worlds that house other portals but even then the backgrounds they have are trippy af and relaxing to stare at. The game is kinda short…

positive · AI labelView post →An absolute wonder of a game! Really imaginative and full of life. Gameplay involves controlling this snake-like being and roaming around worlds trying to figure out where and how are you going to find other snake-like friends. Discovery and recognizing what the world wants you to do is key. Might sound tedious but the mini-worlds in this game are fun to explore and discovering nooks and crannies and small quirks and details add to the immersion. I do admit it's easy to get lost into and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I appreciate Hohokum's ambitious commitment to redefining what a game can be, I rather liked how they were made already because this is a "game" that so deeply lacks purpose, vision or a clearly defined goal. You spend hours coasting around as a celestial worm that draws coloured squares, organises weddings or saves swimmers from the trip to the pool. I just don't get it. If someone asked me what this game is about, I couldn't tell them. Over 2 hours of play didn't bring me closer to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game of hide and see turns into an artistic, puzzle solving adventure. The game takes place over multiple canvases, each providing a new theme and puzzle to solve, overlaid on a glorious, colorful background. The soundscape ties everything together. This game definitely needs more visibility than it has, i would highly recommend playing it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seems likely for games it makes sense for. Flock was too much of a stretch on the hardware, but the Wilmot games and I am Dead are on Switch. People occasionally ask about a Loot Rascals port but it'd be too much work. Can't do Hohokum because it was a PlayStation 1st party game.
