What people are saying
Mixed reception: praised for graphics and gameplay, but criticised for story and bloat.
Many players praise the game's stunning graphics and improved gameplay, with some calling it one of the best-looking games ever. The combat and machine designs are also frequently highlighted as strong points. [3][7][14]
However, a significant number of players criticise the story and writing, calling it inferior to the first game and noting issues like passive-aggressive feminist writing or a lack of emotional weight. Others complain about excessive fetch quests, weapon bloat, and repetitive gameplay that feels like a chore. [4][5][10][31][34]

Critics, per Wikipedia
Horizon Forbidden West received "generally favorable" reviews upon release, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Critics generally agreed that it was a bigger and more improved experience when compared with its predecessor. Simon Cardy from IGN praised the use of cinematics to convey important parts of the story. He remarked that the story was at its best when it was about the cast's personal dramas and the social and political conflicts surrounding the tribes. Dom Peppiatt from VG247 compared the game's structure to Mass Effect and wrote that "the flirtations with BioWare-style story ideas showed just how much of a future this series has." Several critics noted that the…

60 of 366 · most liked firstThe main game was enjoyable overall, but I had several issues with the DLC. The DLC introduces a character who follows you constantly, and I found her quite unlikeable. I often skipped the cutscenes whenever she appeared. In my opinion, the final boss was underwhelming and lacked excitement. I checked Reddit for other people's reviews, and many were highly praising the DLC. They will call you homophobic if you do not like the DLC or criticize the character in the DLC. My criticism is not…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I went into the first game not expecting much based on the premise, but the story and atmosphere managed to blow me away with its unique premise and quality all its own. Unfortunately, Forbidden West does not carry this forward. The game play is by and large the same as Zero Dawn, with an expanded roster of weapons and enemies, and if that's all you want then I would recommend picking this up in a sale. It's those two parts of Zero Dawn, the story and atmosphere, which are severely lacking here…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Initially, I would have given this a positive review, but given that Sony explicitly said that the next title in this series (and all other single player Sony published titles) will not be coming to PC, then I can't recommend this or Zero Dawn unless you get it on sale. The ending is good enough that it doesn't horribly detract, but it's obvious they set it up for another game, which they now refuse to publish here.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man 14hrs. Thats all it took for me to hate what they did to this franchise. What is wrong with these devs they had an amazing game with HZD. So what do they do change it into a souless complex grind. less is more in a lot of cases. 14 hours and I made it to main story mission 5 and the whole game just feels like a job. Repetive side quest grinding to get gear and wepons just to find out its not even good. Too many weapons too. Exploration is nixed by Aloy never shutting up about what i need to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've just finished all side quests, rebel camps, rebel outposts and I'm on my way finishing the drones and black boxes. I do enjoy this game, but the combat (specially the difficulty) design is so atrocious that I end up getting more annoyed than having fun while playing this game. Since I have only two options here: To recommend and To not Recommend, I picked the latter. I'll try to explain my feelings about this game: THUMBS UP: - I absolutely love the scenario, all the colors, flora and…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's a good time, no alcohol required. first one was slightly better as it had more intrigue in its lore. This one plays better but the story the writing kind of tanked, very passive aggressive feminist style writing. Basically an anti-thesis to Horizon Zero Dawn, where HZD had better story with less better gameplay and HFW pretty much improved the gameplay aspect but suffered from worse story overall (Cartoony Villains, tone-deaf protagonists). This is due to HZD's writer John Gonzalaz…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately FB just doesnt have the same pull as HZD. The game added more and more to every facet but didnt stop to think if the additions were fun or just bloat. They should have focused on refining the best parts of the original game and cutting out the parts that people didnt enjoy. For example: There are SO many weapons now, each with multiple variations - mostly different elemental damage. Which wouldnt be a bad thing the weapons remained viable throughout your journey, but they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Zero Dawn was one of my favorite games on the Playstation. I remember playing that game for the first time and was totally blown away. Years later I had to play the sequel While Forbidden West's world is gorgeous, I didn't feel the same excitement playing this game as I did the first entry. The fetch quests got so exhausting that I eventually stop playing the game altogether. Admittedly the first game also had fetch quests but not nearly as many Perhaps I will revisit the game at some point…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horizon: Forbidden West became an 80-hour game of chores and grinding, and I am left feeling absolutely drained. If I had not been determined to push through to the end, it could easily have stretched to twice that length. I want to like the Horizon series. I really do. But in my view, there are so many issues getting in the way of it becoming a truly compelling universe to immerse yourself in. With this entry, it feels as if no one at Guerrilla stopped to critically assess the scope. There is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Horizon Zero Dawn when it first came out. I really wanted to like this Horizon Forbidden West, and many aspects I did. But in the end the cons outweighed the pros. It's a beautiful, open-world adventure with lots to explore, discover, and collect. But poor execution in key combat and writing areas turned it into a slog. PROS - Still a beautiful visual experience. - Solid story recap provided at the start in case you didn't play the first game or its DLCs. - Movement feels solid…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i enjoyed horizon zero dawn because of the simplicity of the gear, you had tiers of the weapons that got better as you upgraded them and got better tiers forbidden west shat all over that, gave you a whole bunch of weapon bloat with random uneccesary stats, nerfed overriding for basically no reason, had a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ story which undid some of the main protagonist's development from the first game, and honest to god kinda just took the good mechanics from the first game and tried to turn them into…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horizon is one of my top favorite games. The story just got better with the second one. The graphics got more beautiful, and the machines became way cooler. Plus in Forbidden West, YOU CAN FLY! I spend half the game just flying around the map, enjoying the sights. I highly recommend Forbidden West.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Pros - Absolutely stunning graphics. Honestly it might be the prettiest game I've ever played. - Ranged combat is fantastic. Fighting machines in this game is actually fun, and while it gets a little hectic when you've got a group of different types of machines all trying to kill you, the strategy of it is engaging. - I love the designs of the new machines. They offer something new and different from the first game while still feeling familiar. Clawstrider, Sunwing, and Slaughterspine…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best Franchise out there. Always delivers. 100% of this game is such a smooth vibe. More please, thank you! Please dont put random ass romance in the DLCs always if you cant commit to it in the main story. Did it in first and now did it again in second. Weird decisions for DLCs.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I only likedd it cuz it was a continuation of the original. I was very disappointed that they made Aloy come across as cold and uncaring of her long time companions. The story was devoid of the emotional weight of the first game. She was treating everyone as beneath her, quite disappointing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They did it. I thought it wasn't possible nowadays, but they managed to prove me wrong. They had already made Horizon Zero Dawn an extraordinary game, but they did even better. Graphics Stunning from start to finish, from lush jungles and sun-drenched coastlines to ruined, overgrown cities and underwater depths teeming with life. The level of detail in facial expressions, machines, and atmospheric effects is breathtaking. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful games ever released.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is visually stunning. I really enjoyed the first game, but Horizon Forbidden West has a much weaker story, feels somehow more repetitive and by the time I got towards the end, I felt like I was forcing myself to finish it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I could put a mixed review as the game itself isn't bad but it's a straight up downgrade from the first game. 1. The skill tree is an obvious nerf to your character and it's not to "regain" the same power you had in the first game pretty much everything is nerfed. 2. Why did they nerf the damage you do and also increase the enemies HP at the same time? Everything is now a bullet sponge, enjoy! 3. If you play on the highest difficulties enjoy getting one shotted a lot. 4. Remember how…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely loved Horizon Zero Dawn. For me, it's a 10/10 game and one of the best open-world experiences I've ever played. The world was fascinating, the mystery kept me hooked from beginning to end, and I genuinely couldn't stop playing. Discovering what happened to humanity, exploring ruins, fighting machines, and uncovering the story piece by piece was an unforgettable experience. I also played Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and I loved it just as much. The improvements to the visuals and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horizon Forbidden West is genuinely one of the best games I've played in a long time and not for the reason you'd might initially think. While on the surface, it's just another Sony open-world title with a unique premise, deep down this is one of the most intricately crafted game worlds I have ever played. While it has some very big flaws, I think there's simply a lot that can be appreciated by this title. Story: So far, the story of both Forbidden West and Burning Shores are by far the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3791962520 In my opinion, this game has some of the best graphics in gaming history. I'm barely able to play it because I'm constantly taking screenshots every five minutes, but I'm enjoying it incredibly much compared to the first game. The optimization is fantastic and the story is amazing, what more could you ask for? 9/10 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3791383856
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically everything that was good about zero dawn was taken out and replaced with over nerfed, over complicated and over bloated systems piled on top of each other. More is not always better and this game is living proof that there is beauty in simplicity
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What to play after Horizon Forbidden West™ Complete Edition?. After only 237 hours, I finally finished the game incl. the DLC Burning Shores. What now?
positive · AI labelView post →After 176 hours playing what I thought was the best game I've ever played, close to the end, my entire game was locked by a well-known bug to the 'What Was Lost' questline. In conflict with completion of the main quest, which shouldn't be happening, I have no saves I can restore that go back before the error occurred. 176 hours down the drain, no way to recover it without starting completely over. I would NEVER recommend this experience to anyone. What a completely frustrating waste. This bug…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good Game - with some drawbacks. I thoroughly enjoyed the first Game because it had some great character moments and an interesting story set in a new kind of world. We still have an engaging story, and the world is getting even bigger and more beautiful. The Play with elevations and some of the new mechanics are a great addition and the Side Quests are again crafted with a lot of care. My issue is with some of the Dialogue and particularly Aloys Character. I feel like she has regressed and we…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you loved Horizon Zero Dawn, this is the sequel that truly expands everything you thought was already great. Horizon Forbidden West takes everything that made the first game special and elevates it. The world is absolutely breathtaking vibrant landscapes, detailed settlements, underwater exploration, massive machines roaming freely it all feels alive. Guerrilla truly pushed the boundaries here. Every region feels handcrafted, and simply traveling from one objective to another can turn…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ABSOLUTE CINEMA Forbidden West takes everything from Zero Dawn and makes it 10x better. Everything is top tier and clearly made with a lot of effort. The storytelling is no doubt superior to the previous game, but not just that, the gameplay is surprisingly even better than Zero Dawn. The bow fight on machine parts is a lot better now. The new Point Launch, the new Valor Skills, and the lovely Sunwing & Waterwing, how can we forget them? They made the entire game so much fun. The only…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoyed Zero Dawn, you'll most likely enjoy this. I did most of the time. What I liked was the world and absolutely insane attention to detail. I would just stand around and enjoy the scenery. I would also look at the enemies interacting. Story was great continuation from last game, there was plenty of side quests to dive even further in the game. But the things I didn't like? Oh boy. - Compatibility, I use Linux now days and I had audio issues with this game. Audio would just die…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The open world activities feel straight out of a 2013 Ubislop game genuinely bland, repetitive checklist content that makes exploration feel like a chore. Combined with the insufferable know it all attitude of Aloy and constant belittling of others, the experience wore out its welcome. Atleast the world was pretty I guess...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was somewhat excited to play this game, having played a long time ago the first one. Unfortunately, I could not get the sound working. I searched for solutions and found this is a known issue. I tried everything I could find. I changed settings in-game and on my PC, different headsets, in-ear headphones, speakers, and even an external audio console but nothing worked. I ended up refunding the game. Its a shame that a title such as this has audio issues that are well known but there are no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically, it's a rehash of Zero Dawn, just with more of everything. It's well-made, but I've gotten a bit tired of open-world games lately, and I didn't feel like playing through Burning Shores—there are a lot of repetitive patterns. For some reason, that bothers me less in Assassin's Creed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having completed two 100% playthroughs of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition and two 100% playthroughs of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, I felt pretty confident that I was ready to jump into Horizon Forbidden West. Turns out, I really wasn’t. I spent over 20 hours just in the Daunt, and wow, did I die a lot. While the core gameplay feels familiar if you’ve played HZD, this game demands much more attention to upgrading your gear if you actually want to be effective. One of the first things that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Almost as amazing as its predecessor. Amazing story and very good gameplay. DLC was nice too. Not as good as Frozen Wilds, but still kinda awesome with over the top final boss fight. If there is something i dislike about the game it must be how bad the hit registration feel. For a game with a bows as weapons and basically having to hit weak points it sure does feel off.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved Zero Dawn a lot. Put in more than 80 hours and mopped up almost every crumb, mainly because the gameplay loop was so satisfying and the design so fresh. Now I'm trying to get into Forbidden West for the second time and just can't handle it. It's mostly the writing. The dialogues are excruciatingly long and deliver very little context or story per minute, and I constantly tune out. Okay sure, thought I to myself, let's say I'm not into the story that much, so let's play Forbidden West…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a solid 7.5/10. There's some cool new additions since the first one, tons of much needed QoL has been added, the new machines are awesome, the environments are gorgeous, facial animations are majorly improved, and puzzles are decent enough, and the Stamina+Valor system is kinda nice. But my god so many questionable design decisions that hurt the game from actually being great: The bugs and flimsy parkouring can be exhausting, the gear progression is far worse than the first game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is by far the most impressive Game I've ever played. Insane graphics, insane story and even more impresive that every single cutscene (and there are really thousands of them! Really!) is made using motion capture and real actors. Physics sometimes glitches but the rest is overwhelmingly good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lack of Innovation: I believe the game is completely lacking in creativity and originality, essentially offering more of the same as the first game without significant improvements to the core gameplay loop. Story Issues: I found the narrative around the new villains (the Zeniths) and Nemesis to be a disappointing shift in tone from the first game's more grounded sci-fi story, feeling that the story was an afterthought scribbled on a napkin. Bloated Systems: The game suffered from a lot of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the rare games I dropped. The developers are just too up their asses in this game. The "Open world" is non-existent. You will find a couple blocked paths/missing tool signs minutes after finishing the tutorial. You may think you would unlock them soon? 10/17 story missions and i still don't have them. And it's not just an inability to clear question marks. You can't fully upgrade your pouches until you finish the first third of the story and open the whole map. High-level enemies…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, I thought Horizon Forbidden West was okay. I liked it, but it didn’t have nearly the same impact as the first game. Visually, the game is outstanding. The graphics are incredible, and the performance is quite solid considering how good it looks. The world itself is massive and, in my opinion, a big improvement over the original, easily the game’s strongest aspect. Combat introduces some new ideas, which are interesting at times, but many of the changes feel unnecessary, like they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun, but the game actually thinks we're stupid. It doesn't let me figure out what to do because Aloy is already saying it within five seconds of the problem/puzzle being presented. It was specially annoying in the fight where you had to shoot the spider-like mechanism hanging from the ceiling. I was getting beat up and Aloy would not stop saying what I had to do. I love Aloy but at that point I was considering turning off voices just because of her. Ignoring that, very pretty game, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. The quest plotlines are decent, the characters look amazing. Motion/facial capture is excellent. Combat is quite fun, the enemy machines are very well articulated and interesting. An unassuming machine will spring to action and become much more intimidating when threatened. Exploring the world is a blast.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has some bigger problems from kinda clunky movement especially while swimming and climbing to meh writting but overall it stays fun and enjoyable. Story is fine even though the premise is less interesting than in the first game , combat is good but still struggles with groups of enemies and melee , where part 2 really scores is once again with its machines ! their design and animations are simply mindblowing in addition the enhanced perk and weapon system offer WAY more choice and depth than…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Voice acting, graphics, gameplay, combat system, environment design, story,,,, all 10/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game world is absolutely enormous. The main story is absolutely epic and just keeps on getting better, and there is so much side-content. The gameplay is rather different from that of Zero Dawn. Upgrading weapons and outfits requires a much bigger commitment. The skill tree so many new options to enhance. And new feature the glider, the sunwing mount (maybe a bit too late in the game though). 2+ game-breaking bugs found. As this is a direct sequel, you'll need to play Zero Dawn first to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoyed the first Horizon Zero Dawn then you will enjoy this. I think it's nice because it genuinely feels like a continuation of the story rather than just a completely different game. Beyond the story itself, the graphics are just breathtaking and just has you mesmerized. If you're curious what this game is like then I highly recommend playing the first one to get an idea. But if not then it's an adventure RPG with exciting combat and deep storylines that connects you to the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"A Step Up. But Something's Off, Yet Again." Forbidden West is actually a step up from Zero Dawn in terms of visual fidelity, exploration, gameplay, traversal, and the vast world. With that said, I gotta be honest, based on my experience, this installment left so much of a hollow and 'meh' feeling in the middle. Although it's kinda kicking a bit at the beginning and closer to the end. Like the characters, what's happening to the world, and the stakes are... how do I say it? Stiff... like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It took me 123.4 hours to achieve 100% completion in Horizon Zero Dawn and that was taking my time and I savored every moment in that game, the beautiful vistas and amazing story it gave me, this game......well this one sucked most of the fun out of it. I currently have 104 hours in this game at time of writing and I feel I'm getting close to the end of the main quest line for my first play through....that means I'm probably looking at another 10-20 hours for the NG+ and NG+UH runs AND I've yet…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I enjoyed this game more than its predecessor, I feel this series may always be stuck in “two steps forward, one step back”. With every improvement made, there is a nitpick. Maybe those nitpicks are small, but over the course of 70 hours, they grow large, fast. A third version of this game could be the best of the series, or collapse under its own weight.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played the 1st game, really invested with the world building, lore, character development and definitely fell in love with Thunderjaw. Unlike the 1st, the sequel is meh. Felt like angst teenage story. The DLC is where I drew my line where the woke agenda is implemented into the story. I don't see any significant effect that need to make Aloy gay. I respect her and her back story in the 1st game. But it totally flew out of window for the entirety of this game, the sequel. Not recommended.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished the game after logging in 115 hrs so can now leave a full review. I loved HZD, it was an amazing game in all respects so I was always going to buy this game. However, I found this game to be bloated and it left me feeling very unsatisfied both during the game play and upon completion. It didn't offer the same immersion as the HZD. The whole ecosystem of story, combat, training grounds etc. clicked in HZD, in FW it just doesn't. The story and dialogue in particular was a drag…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-7/10- It is really hard for me to rate Horizon Forbidden West higher than 7/10, mainly due to the frustrations I've had with it. Starting with the positives though, the game looks absolutely stunning, the world looks wondeful and it almost feels real. There is a great attention to details, from the machines and beautiful diverse biomes, to facial animations and cutscene quality. It truly feels like a world you could live in. Slowly travelling the titular Forbidden West is a breathtaking…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i love these games very much however for some reason the seconds games game play has me pulling out hairs before even giving my genes a chance to make me bald. for some ungodly reasons i have shouted and damn near busted my PC over the game play of this game, the first one felt way more fluent and that playing the game was the fun part and not the story. again i love these games but holy ♥♥♥♥ did i enjoy more things about the first one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It suffices to say I don't see myself playing the 3rd one, if there will be one. This was way too long, unnecessarily, even more so. And I don't even like the main character anymore. She became such an annoying character. I also don't like certain decisions they made. I don't think this part need much explanation. It's not so bad gameplay wise but there are so many stuff the game throws at you. You feel compelled to go through your inventory but as soon as you clean up and get ride of the gears…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Where Zero Dawn asked, "What went wrong?" Forbidden West asks, "Now what?" This shift makes Forbidden West the better game. Aloy starts out as a lone wolf, trying to be the savior, and the game actively punishes her for it until she learns the real lesson: survival is a collective act, not a solo mission. If Zero Dawn was a mystery worth unraveling, then Forbidden West is an argument worth considering: Should you stay and fix the mess or run and repeat it? The voice acting in Burning Shores…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horizon Forbidden West, sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, is a fantastic adventure game where you play as Aloy. The game has a rich story that makes the first game feel more like a prologue. With stunning graphics, and a huge world full of things to explore. The game offers tons of content, exciting quests, challenges, lots of gear to earn and upgrade, skill trees, memorable characters that keep you engaged from start to finish. It’s a beautiful and immersive experience that’s easy to get lost in.…
