What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 169 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (1,730 of 2,166 positive).
Players praise the game's parkour and movement, calling it a fun spiritual successor to Jet Set Radio. [1][2][3] Many note the game is abandoned with a dead playerbase and no updates since 2018-2019. [4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize the progression system, citing grindy level requirements and lack of direction. [7][8][9]

I'm really sorry but it's just not fun. Coming from Bomb Rush Cyberfunk it's such a downgrade in terms of mechanics.

This game is LASER FOCUSED on one thing. and it is the freedom to run around in the city. i have a feeling that is made for either people who like "air gear" and/or "Jet set radio", and it mixes the 2 into a perfect blend, making a new but familiar place for the people who like 1 or both of these above. it's a love letter, and a damn good one

Really good fun, eye candy visuals, smooth movement. Seems its dead as of 2023 which is sad, back when i first played it seeing dozens of players light trails around was very cool. Now it feels a bit lonely.

Fun game, but don't come in expecting content. Last update was likely 2018-2019. Joined the game's Discord and it's about as dead as the game itself. Dev doesn't seem to recognize the game anymore (his last post in the Discord was somewhere mid-2020, talk about abandonment). Honestly, if you're looking to get into games like Jet Set Radio, this is a GREAT place to start. It gets the basic concept down and is …
Summarised from 34 of the 195 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
67% of the 169 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Hover. The complaint that keeps coming up: game is abandoned with no updates. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine an indie title that's biggest influences are Jetset and Mirror's edge and you get Hover. Hover is a game with fundamental design and movement flaws that limit the overall appeal of the game. However, surrounding these problems is a great universe that is matched by solid mission variety, a unique level up system, and interesting energy mechanics. In addition, the game’s robust basketball parkour mode, Gameball, is an absolute highlight, and offered the most fun Hover has to offer.…

neutral · AI labelView post →This was originally described to me as a spiritual successor to Jet Set Radio with music by Hideki Naganuma. I initially picked it up when it was still in Early Access. My first impressions were bad. Got easily lost, had arbitrary "wait in jail" punishments when caught by authorities, and just didn't have the right feel. And Naganuma's contribution was two songs, neither of which played through my brief time with the game. No problem, though! Early Access means it still had time to improve and…

Look, Cyberfunk dropped a little less then a year ago at the time of this review and yeah its immaculate. But for almost 7 years now, Hover has been keeping the lights on and carrying the Jet Set Radio fandom on its back alone until they showed up. This game is NOT a rip off of JSR because there's no such thing, if you make a game that involves the visage of the…

positive · AI labelView post →This is a message to myself -> Please for the love of all things holy don't buy this game again (you've already bought it twice and it was very meh story and movement wise both times) it isn't really worth it at 3.99. This game is trying to do to much and succeeding at none of it. The trailer makes the game look better than it is unfortunately (it also feels un-alive and empty) also for a game that would seem like it would have controller support... it doesn't have it despite what it says…

neutral · AI labelView post →This feels like an early access game that never got finished. There's a good foundation, but not enough of an actual game. I'd give it a neutral score if Steam had that option. If this type of genre interests you, it might be worth trying if you can get it in a bundle or on sale for under $5. I haven't played Jet Set Radio so I can't compare. There's a game called Antigrav for PS2 Eye Toy which I'd recommend if you can find the hardware to run it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think I've almost got it down, almost. You will never truly master the game; with the right mindset, there'll always be something to do. Admittedly, the playerbase is dying. However there's a dedicated core of players, and regular new influx of players every time it goes on offer. The game features steam workshop, so you can create your own races and games, or try other great creations. PVP Gameball specifically is my main focus, in which the skill ceiling can go beyond the map height.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best way I can describe this game is as cyberfunk. The aesthetics and energies of the game maintain a fun, funky, and upbeat vibe, while still maintaining some of the cyberpunk themes of fighting oppression in a dystopian, authoritarian, and technologically advanced future. In it's glass half-full demeanor, it almost is more punk than some of the more dismal cyberpunk games out there- as punk is doing what make you and others happy and thriving at the disdain and inconvenience of authority…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had a great time playing this: exploring the open world, upgrading characters and optimizing them for different mission types, perfecting missions I thought were particularly fun and getting collectibles (which double as upgrades) for it, and watching other players do their own different races in the same world. There's missions of various kinds (platforming, racing, some mix), and a strong feeling of progression. Downside: if you don't like a particular mission type you'll have to at least…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →coming back to this game after a few years and post BRC, this game is clearly still great to just turn off your brain to and its very clear it not only takes inspiration from JSR but other things too, while trying to stand as its own thing. its a shame that this game seemingly just dunked on now? apparently??? i don't think hover is perfect but other JSR-likes exist and they can all very much co-exist as their own spin. the JSR drought made people innovate with the thing they like, and hover…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“Full Controller Support” This game didn’t work in tv mode on steam deck. It wouldn’t recognize my controller. Ah well. I was so excited to play this!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The movement doesn't feel that great and the rest is just average on average. Progression is locked behind MMO-styled level grind and skilltree, which isn't fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No direction in the story. Online portion is pretty dead so with the lack of a real directed single player experience it really sucks. The feel/flow of movement feels really bad too. I got this because it seemed to be a spirited successor of jet set radio and it falls flat in that department, really disappointed with this buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great jsr type of game. cool soundtracks that were made by the legend himself, Hideki Nagamuma. 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →100% The first area, played through the story. finished the story, started completing side missions and unlocking all the characters, started making builds for said characters to use when needed. decide to make a new character but all team slots full. go to delete character but accidently delete whole team, panic and Alt + F4 game. realise cant get back progress but kept all my characters. have to start all over again completing missions + rank + story. 10/10 game would do again
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got 20+ hours in this on Switch so don't mind the low playtime. This game is often, perhaps inevitably, associated with Jet Set Radio - and sure enough, if you vibe with the anti-authoritarian themes, cel shaded styling and a degree of high-speed platforming, you'll find overlap in your enjoyment here. But Hover is very much a different game from JSR/BRC, one focused on parkour, climbing and movement versus grinding, tricks and graffiti. Platforming is very much at the core of Hover and you're…

positive · AI labelView post →TL;DR- If it wasn't for the movement, this would be at least a 9.5/10 game for me. Great art style, maps are amazing, love the soundtrack, would play more if it wasn't for the movement. Movement feels awkward, clunky, and overall sluggish.I think the momentum side of the movement is good, but my main problems are with the slow acceleration, difficulty to turn, and small objects having full collision.I often find myself trying to turn a small corner, hitting a arrow sign or small ledge and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: This game is fun and worth the money This game has so much too it and is worth the $30 ish that i paid for it. I first had it on gamepass and enjoyed it and have since bought it on pc. Though the game says it has crossplay it does not have crossplay invites meaning you need to find each other in a server, (there are not many people playing so its not hard) but it does take away from the game a bit but not to make a negative review. The lower levels of playing a character when you have…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No idea why so many people like to associate it with Jet Set Radio, this game is so far from the quality those games offer it is insane. Only good part of this game is the soundtrack, just skip it and go buy/emulate the JSR games and buy BRC.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is very good It has a pretty short main story, but it is one of the best 15 hours you will find on Steam! Jumping and running through the city feels so smooth. Not many people play this game anymore so don't expect to find random people to play multiplayer with, but if you do have friends, the multiplayer is very good as well. I highly recommend getting this game, it goes on sale for $5.00 every few months. ---{ Graphics }--- ☐ You forget what reality is ☐ Beautiful ☑ Good ☐ Decent…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Throughout this entire game, I could really summarize it as "Jet Set Radio ran so that this game could walk". Sometimes, a peaceful walk is what you want though. It is odd. I feel like I should absolutely adore this game. It really just is ok though. The music ranges from alright to Hideki Naganuma, which is really cool that he did songs for this indie game. Movement is... fine. It is like half of the game, but it really is just fine. I guess it never clicked with me, which is odd since Jet…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The short of it: Hover is a disaster from the get go, but the gameplay does have potential. The long: The second I start the game, it asks me to delete corrupted save files or something-not a great sign. Then it asks me to do it again seconds after doing it the first time-really not a great sign. Start a new game, which was counter-intuitive, and not perfectly obvious what to do- we're striking out here. I get to character selection and get stuck there. I make my character but can't proceed…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This games movement is very clunky, which is an issue with the game its inspired by jsr and jsrf. It was fine for those games as legacy titles but having clunky controls in a modern game isnt very fun. I would only recommend you buy this game when its often on sale for very cheap. Definitley not worth $20.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hover is really addictive with constant objectives, very sleek movement and sensible upgrades that make you feel really powerful in such a vertical environment. It always gives you rewards for every single action you do, from the simplest of tricks to collecting many hidden things around the world. Just a friendly reminder - the native Linux version is outdated, you have to play with Proton to get the full experience.
