What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 178 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (721 of 1,262 positive).
Some players enjoy the third-person perspective and find it more fun than the original. [1][2][3] Others criticize the game for poor controls, bugs, and lack of multiplayer. [4][5][6] Many recommend buying it only at a deep discount, like for a dollar. [2][7][8]

After reading all the negative reviews I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I purchased this. I haven't played long but had a blast and a laugh so far. There are some issues like goofy animations and slow attack animations but regardless I think those that enjoy bashing zombies w/o having to worry about other players griefing them will enjoy this game. Thanks to the developer for making a standalone I for one …

I played the isometric view 'How to Survive' more than a year ago and had a lot of fun with it. Exploring, surviving and crafting is nicely worked out and they added some humor with Kovac in it. All in all a good game. Yesterday I saw the 3'th view gameplay for this game in the sale list for 99ct. I didn't mind another playthrough after more than a year so I gave it a go. Same fun with a different view and in my …

i thought this game looked cool after i looked at the screen shots, oh boy i was wrong. i bought it for $1 on steam summer sale, this is garbage, there is only audio options and keybindings nothing else, the graphics are terrible, so is the gameplay (just hit it until it dies) the zombies sound like farm animals giving birth (pigs to be exact) and you cant even jump?! im embaressed to even have this in my library i …

It would be great if this game had the coop mode. Sadly they decided to make a great version of the game and removed the coop from it.

Its cheap....but the controls are so bad I don't even think its worth playing. This game is definately made for a console.
Summarised from 34 of the 197 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
49% of the 178 Steam reviewers we collected recommend How To Survive: Third Person Standalone. The complaint that keeps coming up: controls are janky and aiming is wonky. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not gonna request a refund for two reasons. The other games are actually decent and provided alot of fun. This game wasn't the worst i just feel like it was straight port to third person though and somethings weren't thought through fully but hey it is a decent just shoot em up and survive zombie game. My main gripe is that it wouldn't shut down even after exiting steam, had to kill it was task manager. Also I only .99$ so i didn't expect some mind blowing game. IF it's on sale for 1.00…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I prefer this version more than older version How to survive. Why? - Because it's third person and reminds me something from state of decay. - Shorter story and less boring without the damn volcano island without resources. - Less and better achievements. - All the dlcs in one version. - More Animals. - Easier to find resources and complete missions without explore the island one million times. - Better price. Unfortunately and only negative is that there is no multiplayer. 7/10…

It's just a new perspective for How to Survive. It does work, but depending on your previous experience with the game, it's up to you to decide whether it worth it or not.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are two very simple reasons this version of this game will probably put you off. First, per the original, you play from a top-down perspective, meaning that aiming a weapon is only a two dimensional operation from your viewpoint. Like a hand on a clock. You don't have to accommodate for shot elevation. In this version, you're operating over the shoulder, meaning you have to factor in the vertical dimensions of your attack. This perspective shift doesn't lend to fighting quickly,…

neutral · AI labelView post →The aiming is a bit janky but if you can get past that this is just as fun as the original playing from the isometric perspective. Great campaign, lots of fun loot to collect, and all that good stuff just like the original. Unfortunately multiplayer was removed as well as a few other minor changes but mostly the same game. It's not bad but honestly should have been a DLC or something like that for the original. It goes on sale for as low as a buck so just watch for that if you are interested in…

neutral · AI labelView post →Based on community feedback, Eko Software went back to the crafting table to reinvent its zombie survival action-RPG How to Survive. The original game plays like a twin-stick hack-and-slash from a top-down isometric view like a typical action-RPG. This new remake, called How To Survive: Third Person Standalone, has a zoomed-in, behind-the-back camera like a third-person shooter. How To Survive: Third Person Standalone is basically a modification of the original How to survive granting you to…

Especially when we're talking about modern times in general and Steam in particular. So many people just don't giving a dang about their bad reputation and just looking for some easy money. Heck, even the AAA publishers are scamming the heck out of us nowadays. And naturally, the small ones are always in for an easy cash grab. So... here comes another one of those. Because yes, what…

If 3rd person seems like your cup of tea, go on ahead. (Most satisfying if you buy…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its kinda novel to see a game go from top down to 3rd person, but thats the only really upside to this game. There are much better 3rd person games out there, and to top it off, this one has a horrendous graphics glitch that seems to happen frequently, the kind where wierd images flash all over the screen constantly. It's pretty much an epileptic attack just waiting to happen. The top down how to survive games are cool, but skip this crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the first Negative Review on my profile. This game is a bugged piece of crap which had a lot of potential. I'm not changing my review unless they fix this piece of crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Caught up reading "How to Survive as a Maid in a Horror Game" and it really ended with 110 chaps? The pacing at the end seemed rushed which is sad to see :<. Heard that a bunch of really good scenes in the novel didn't get included and whatnot

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting twist of the original how to survive. If you like zombies and crafting than it's a game for you 3> ;-)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a good game, The challenge is there for you to survive and not die, i know, it's not co/op and the game should of been free to those that had the first standalone H2S. But let me bring to your attenton that it was a good idea to change the view of the game and much more enjoying with insta-kills and leveling up your character. I think this game is a must have for anyone that has played any of the H2S titles. Great jobs devs.. Thumbs up!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reading ‘How to Survive as a Maid in a Horror Game’ the title is pretty self explanatory. The protagonist of the game (the ML) is satan reincarnated in a noble guy’s body… due to a curse, his goal is to kill people. MC wakes up in the game as one of ML’s maids.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seeing "Mixed" reviews for this game is mind-blowing to me. I loved the original, and jumped all over this one when it released. Now I can't play the original anymore because the 3rd-person view makes it so much more fun for me. There are some occasional bugs that are probably remnants of the port. Occasionally an item you need will spawn in a place you can't get to, like on top of one of the huts. Occasionally zombies will spawn inside those huts; not sure if that's a bug but it happens so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How To Survive: Third Person is basically a modification of the original How to survive granting you to play in third person. The core game still remains the same, you need to survive by crafting stuff, killing enemies, hunt animals etc. There are several difficulty levels to help the player on having a great experience balancing the game well enough. Two DLCs are also included, One Shot Escape is basically a rogue like, worth the whole price by itself.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not sure why it has so many bad reviews, I personally quite enjoyed this game! It has everything a decent survival game needs, even has quests! The rates of spawn for zombies is rather high, but i found it to be quite a decent experiance
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very good game. I played the top-down and finished it and thought when this went on sale that it would be pretty cool to play in 3rd person. In fact it is quite fun and more challenging than the top-down. To me it was worth the money and the fun is there. People say it should have been a free-addon, but I disagree it's like a new game. They did a really good job making this a 3rd person game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →or i could try to do another idea i want to do and choose some friends and draw them as the different jobs that exist in the How to Survive world theres no shortage of them with a list of roughly 81 jobs (all taken from every final fantasy tactics game)

I'd love to leave it a thumbs up for the price point, but the fact is, after 15 minutes, I promptly quit and uninstalled this game. I was looking for an inexpensive zombie survival game in 3rd person. I should have bought something else. This game reminds me of some junk me and my buddies put together in college. It's probably worth the $1.49 I paid, but the game is pretty crappy, so I simply can't…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didn't realize that it didn't have any of the co-op/multiplayer compatibility that made the first one so great, not sure how well I like the challenge of single player in third person. I'd rather recommend the first one then this though just for those functions.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a remake of the 1st game in third person mode...I dunno that it's better or not, it feels exactlly the same and I do like it and have no problem with it, but had I known this, I would not have purchased it only cause there is nothing wrong with the 1st one but it's whatever cause I got it while on sale and my collection of this series is now complete..... =)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Protagonist in this game is very weak, bad combat, cannot run if your stamina is low
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A third person take on How to Survive. Sadly there is no coop which would of been nice to add for this version and there is a few issues with controls and a few odd bugs such as zombies appearing right in front of you or randomly getting stuck on things. Overall if you want to play it in third person then give this a shot but honestly I found the top down view works fine and feels a bit better overall.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the 2D version for some time and I really liked it until I found this version on sale. Altough the graphics are not great, the game is interesting for any zombie fan out there. For 1 euro I can't recommend this game enough. Buy it on discount!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got Boring after awhile. Not really a review I get that but I just didn't find it that enjoyable. Had a better perspective than the regular version obviously but other than that meh.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I waited quite a while to review this cause i felt i was judging it harshly but no im not. this needs some some serious tweaks to even make worthwhile, The aiming can be so bad with ranged weapons you would swear your character is drunk and somehow firing duds at zombies causing alot of your deaths. It gets worse too since they like sending in large hordes and they have no type of auto aim, and this game in third person needs it bad cause you can get surrounded by a horde and not know cause…
